the dispossessed, ursula k le guin, 1974 — she freaked it on this one. great use of past+present split structure. great ending. should be taught in high school but i understand why it might not be

pet sematary, stephen king, 1983 — kind of like the seinfeld effect where it skillfully originates a trope and then feels dated? but for haunted indian burial grounds??? does have an incisive exploration of grief and a perfect last scene. also, fence your yard, jesus christ man

dark matter, blake crouch, 2016 — goes down smooth like gogurt

the lathe of heaven, ursula k le guin, 1971 — i liked the weird little gentle protagonist and his mean love interest. the climate change hurt my feelings. should reread it and develop better thoughts

the amazing adventures of kavalier and clay, michael chabon, 2000 — wahhhhhhhhh (me weepin). what a perfect balance of skilled artifice (prose voice, plot) and animating humanity

BRUCE WAYNE & HAL JORDAN in BATMAN UNIVERSE

Picturing Martha and Thomas- especially Thomas- as shallow aristocrats who just don't quite understand everything that Bruce has become. Why he has so endeavored to stopping crime, to adopting children, to throwing all that he is to "fix" Gotham. Their idea of activism is typical- galas and programs that can be deductible on taxes. Not whatever Bruce has gotten mixed up with, with no sleep, saving people they don't see as valuable like addicts and people who 'got themselves into their own mess" with familial cycles. and they REALLY just don't understand his children at all. (this applies more to Thomas overall, because of some depictions in the comics. I should really just write my own story but I LOVE the idea that Bruce has glorified his parents much, and thought that his goodness came from them, when it really came from himself.)

*resists the urge to write this fic too* oh my god what if they're only good in his memory. what if he and everyone else idolized them because they were dead. what if they were flawed and sometimes selfish and don't want to help Gotham like Bruce does. what if Bruce has to reconcile his mission with their current beliefs. what if they don't like his kids? WHAT IF THEY DON'T LIKE HIS KIDS??

since you've consumed my tumblr I'm assuming you've already seen my fic recs tag, which is filled with kind strangers on the internet recommending all the good stuff, including some recs of my own! if you missed it, I also have some comic recs here

as for some recent stuff I've liked, they've all been pretty lighthearted:

another one bites by seateainthemountains is chaotic and goofy in a very comic book-y kind of way

ryanoid on the brain by firefly_ika is another goofy one but also short and sweet. peter versus bug spray

it had to be you by fancastical in which wade recognises peter every time - except when it counts. I'm just a wimp for identity fics, sorry

cross the highways of fantasy is another one by fancastical and is a special shout out because I adore the concept of peter and weasel having history (and peter and wade using that to be insufferable)

five times peter says I hate you, and one time he (finally) doesn't by bestie has a brief scene with wade wreaking havoc with photographer-on-the-job peter and that's a woefully underrepresented trope I adore

J'onn's head shape changes throughout the historical group photos of the jl in the background of several panels during final crisis: requiem- he trusts this team, he loves this planet, and slowly takes on a more martian form. his subconscious comfort around them physically manifests as his body allowing itself to take a martian shape (all IDs in alt text)

SPOILERS FOR FINAL CRISIS: REQUIEM

he was like a grandfather or a father to some of them, a mentor to many, and a friend to all. the fact that Nightwing finds him dead is so powerful because, in this continuity, Dick has known J'onn since his time as Robin. Dick is frequently at the beginning of modern heroes (Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman) in DC, so him being the one who finds J'onn feels very full-circle

the usage of "Martian Manhunter" vs "J'onn" is of note as well. when the Secret Society is fighting him, they only refer to him as Martian Manhunter, while every single hero calls him J'onn

the day after J'onn died, a telepathic link is activated in the minds of Bruce Wayne, Clark Kent, Hal Jordan, Cynthia Reynolds, and Dinah Lance that causes them to record and recite J'onn's history of Mars. not only did he trust them to accept his martian form, he entrusted them with his account of his almost dead civilization. and they not only keep that promise by combining their part of the account into a book, but they also bury him on Mars so he could be reunited with his home at last

Superman being the orator at the funeral becomes even more fitting when J'onn recounts meeting a young Clark Kent in Smallville. they share not only a history, but a burden: as some of the last members of their civilizations, aliens on Earth, and heroes, J'onn frequently lent an ear to Clark's troubles

Batman is not known for his displays of affection, but the end of the comic makes clear that Bruce will miss him. with his cowl off, he leaves a single choco (the DC's version of oreos) on J'onn's casket and calls him an old friend before leaving back to Earth

J'onn's steady presence in the league is so important to their ability to come together, not just as an organization, but as a community. it is not the same without him

Some of my favorite stories here and there are about Superman just doing random shit- but often, he doesn't actually have a reason to do so...unless a Charity story comes around. One of the things that Superman is very passionate about is charities, and due to not accepting any personal payment, he will often demand donations from those that offer.

Bruce Wayne should be an old fashioned gothic romantic. When he actually falls in love with someone he should get a little weird and intense about it. “Alfred, how do I tell them I want to crawl into their very veins and pump their blood with my own hands without freaking them out” type shit.
