Your Own Melody - Luke x Singer!Reader
This is an extended version of the oneshot I made out of a whim, I suddenly have the urge to turn it into a fully fledged piece of writing. This will be written with Gender Neutral terms in mind so all audiences can enjoy! I hope you like it as this is my first piece like this.
Link to the oneshot
Note: this takes place in a time just after their big performance at the Orpheum and their curse had been uplifted. I’ve taken this uplifted curse as a revival, since Julie could come in contact with them I figured it would be sweet to say they’re finally and literally alive again. This also has short flashbacks in it to add to the story they’re typed in italics from now on.
Please enjoy!

Ever since Julie’s performance at the Orpheum you couldn’t help but recite the lyrics whimsically on a day-to-day basis, it practically plagued your mind but in the best way possible. You have known Julie for a few years now, Flynn included, so you were there through all her struggles with playing music as well as her mothers bereavement. You knew her mother for a brief moment in time, she encouraged you to take up singing, though you always admit Julie was WAY better than you. However, since you grew up by Julie's side, you also learned about this ghost band pretty quickly. You never really believed the whole hologram shtick Julie had put on, but out of respect for her you didn’t pry at it. And now you’re suddenly able to speak to them, feel their touch and most of all see them! It was surreal, your first time actually seeing them properly.
Now you found yourself at an after party. It took a few days after their big performance to hold one as they were coming to terms with their whole ‘Revival’ thing, but they were stoked to say the least.
“This party is gonna be the best one yet!” Luke chimed in with his trademark energetic energy that could make anyone feel drawn to him and energised. The band was setting up little party decorations for the celebration of their big day at the Orpheum, you and Julie were sitting on the couch mumbling to each other.
“Don’t you find it weird that we can SEE them now” You spoke to Julie a little dumbfounded by all of this, seeming to be in awe as you watched all the boys set up their decorations. Watching Alex prevent Reggie from putting up some sort of country musician poster up in the background, you could help but chuckle at Reggies love for country music.
“Well that's what I thought at first… but you’ll get used to it” Julie spoke back to you calmly, not seeming to be alarmed by the not-so-ghostly band. You had forgotten at that moment that Julie has been able to see them all this time, ever since she played that Sunset swerve- i mean- curve demo album.
“Oh yeah” You couldn’t help but chuckle at your stupidity as you remembered that fact. “Now I understand why you keep them around… they are a lively bunch” You add as you speak to Juile, watching as Alex and Reggie fight over the Cowboy poster for what feels like an hour.
“Hey guys! Just put the poster away” Luke chimed in with his usual puppy dog eyes. Now you understood what Julie meant when she spoke about his eyes, they were cute, charming even. You were enthralled in that moment. It was such a small brief moment, but it felt like minutes went by before Julie spoke.
“Uhhh earth to y/n? You alive there?” Julie waved her hand in-front of your face, snapping you back to reality as a wave of blood started to race through you, you began to get flustered. “Huh?! Yeah- yeah i’m good” you acknowledged her in that moment as your face grew red. She couldn’t help but smirk as she looked between you and Luke.
“Looks like someones got the hots for-” Julie was loudly interrupted by you bursting into frantics “I DO NOT” you yelled defensively which definitely caught all the boys attention as well as Flynn’s who had just walked into pure silence.
“Uhh what did I just miss? I always miss all the good stuff” Flynn whines as she waves towards all the boys, then moving to the couch to sit next to Julie, Julie was sitting in between the two of you now.
“You missed nothing-” you spoke as you were able to eventually calm yourself down, Flynn brushed it off as she had more important matters to attend to, talking to Julie about future plans for the band. This leads to you sitting there listening to their conversation.
“Are you sure it was just nothing? It most definitely sounds like something” Luke spoke from behind the piano, putting some fresh flowers on top of it in memory of Julie's mother. It was a sweet gesture, if not for your allergies. Luke was known for his curiosity, and was not one to give up on figuring it out unlike Flynn.
Luke speaking caught your attention, you were uncertain of what to say, after all you couldn’t admit that you found him hot that would just be… weird! After all you’re under the impression he likes Julie anyways, so you weren’t going to impose on that. “Yep! Most definitely nothing” You responded with most certainty, but your eyebrow does this little twitch whenever you lie. Something that over your time with the band, even though you couldn’t see them, it was something they could see and pick up on over the time.
“Awh c’mon y/n you know I hate secrets!” And there it was, Those damned puppy dog eyes. Those eyes were like traps you swear, you couldn’t do anything but avert your eyes. The other boys had eventually stopped fighting over that poster, but they were now mumbling to each other about you and Luke.
“Hey y/n! Don’t you have some food you need to pick up for tonight's party?” Alex chimed in, in support of you and you mentally thanked him for changing the subject. “Yes!” you shot up from the couch to quickly make your way to the garage door Flynn had entered through earlier. “I’ll see you all tonight!” you left abruptly.
“What's up with them?” Reggie asked, clueless as always as Luke was just as clueless. Julie couldn’t help but laugh and shake her head at the boy's idiotic nature.
As time passed you grew more and more nervous for this party, you were planning on staying the night too, crashing on the couch once it was all over which the other boys had no problem with. The more the merrier they would say. Alex wasn’t wrong when he said you had to pick up some food, just some light cheap party snacks as well as some red solo cups for drinking. Reggie had promised you a game of beer pong because you had never played it before.
You were mostly nervous because you had made a promise.
“If you guys even successfully perform at the Orpheum I may consider singing a song at the after party” You said to them half-jokingly as you shook your head. The boys however, took it very seriously and they were excited to hear you play. Since hearing you speak to Julie about how you used to sing, whenever they’d perform in the garage during the instrumentals they’d try to convince you to sing for them, to which you’d deny every single time until you gave up and made that promise.
And that promise still haunts you now, knowing that they’ve not only performed at the Orpheum, but absolutely crushed it! They wanted to hear the real you on stage- well in the garage, the one you can’t hide in the shadows. Just like Julie, after her mothers bereavement you also stopped singing, though unlike Julie you hadn’t had the ghost band to wake you up and bring you out of the dark… until now. Those damn boys were going to be the death of you someday, which was really ironic.
After picking up all the junk food and snacks every teenager would hunger over you headed back to the garage. You could hear music playing and you presumed the party had already started, the party was a small event, only you, The band and a few of Julie's friends and past acquaintances, the likes of Nick and Carrie for example, though they didn’t stay long. But let's not also forget Alex’s ghostly Boyfriend Willie. As you entered the garage you were greeted by everyone yelling your name.
“y/n!” They all yelled happily knowing you had made it to the party, though part of you thought it was mostly because you were bringing the food, boxes of pizza and bog standard party snacks. You greeted everyone back, you and Willie had your own little handshake you’ve practiced from time to time. You place the food on a table at the side of the garage so people could help themselves to the divine delicacies you provided.
“Thank you y/n, for bringing the food, it means a lot” Luke came up to you as you exhaustedly sat down on the couch, that couch might as well be your best friend at the moment, the only thing that isn’t making you nervous. “It’s nothing! After all, it's a special occasion” You spoke like it was nothing, just a small gesture for a big moment for the band.
“If you say so” Luke smiled warmly at you, you could tell that everyone was grateful for what you provided for the band. “Don’t forget the promise you made to us!” A wild Reggie yells with his mouth full of pizza, this boy couldn’t be anymore childish as he shoved food in his face like he hadn’t eaten in decades, which coming to think of it… wasn’t entirely wrong?
“I won't forget the promise if you wipe the grease from your face” You rolled your eyes at the boy as you couldn’t help but chuckle, Reggie was quite the character. He always made you laugh, he was like a younger brother to you.
“Hey guys! Are you ready?” Alex called out to the rest of the boys and Julie, they were going to perform a few songs for the party, but after the first song it was going to be your turn to sing. They performed their victory song which they performed at the Orpheum. You loved that song, but it felt different this time, with the looming upcoming performance you knew you had to do everything was overwhelming you… the music overstimulated you.
So with that you left during the band's performance, Luke tried to shoot you a concerned look but you were too focused on calming yourself down. You had crouched yourself down, your back facing the garage door outside of all the ruckus. It wasn’t long until that song had subsided and someone followed you out.
“I know you’re behind me” you spoke with your head in your knees, you were mumbling though and it was obvious something was bothering you.
“How- How did you know?-” The guitarist was dumbfounded that you noticed him without even turning around, from the sounds if it, Luke had forgotten you could at least hear footsteps but also;
“I can sense those cute puppy dog eyes from a mile away” You spoke without thinking, you were too busy sulking and worrying about performing to even notice you called him cute! Like what were you thinking? nothing from what I can tell.
“You think I'm cute?” Luke looked at you from behind with a tilted head, pointing to himself with confusion but also a level of blush on his face. He wasn’t expecting that sort of response from you, in-fact he was anticipating some sort of roast or a ‘Get Away!’ as you like to deal with your problems alone. Your head flips to Luke instantly seeing his confused yet flustered face, you were crouched there in silence for a long moment.
“. . . No Comment” you didn’t want to deny it anymore than you already did, after all you dug yourself into this hole and built this wall brick by brick, so you might as well accept it. Luke moved up to you and sat beside you with a little smug smirk on his face, seemingly proud that he was able to get through to you for once. You are a stubborn cookie after all.
“Well this is a strange little relationship we have” The guitarist spoke to you whilst looking up at the sky. Seemingly leaning in shoulder-to-shoulder with you.
“Yeah of course it’s strange, you have Julie and now I'm here calling you cute! This isn’t what a good friend should be saying-” You had started to spiral a little as you tighten your grip around your knees. All this time you didn’t want to intervene with whatever Luke and Julie had going on. After all, they looked perfect together, they were like the power couple of the century, well so you believed. Though within all this manic episode Luke had cut in seemingly confused.
“What do you mean, I have Julie?” Luke now had a hold of your shoulder, concerned for your little anxiety attack you were having outside of the garage. The summer sun had just fully set into night time as the moon started to show. You looked at him with tears filling your eyes.
“You and Julie are dating aren’t you?” you spoke as you could feel your throat clogging up. Luke wasn’t the best with comforting people who were upset though it all made sense to him now, he understood why you were upset, you loved him. You have loved him since the day you first laid eyes on him, he was so handsome in his sleeveless shirts and not to mention the sweat dripping from him when he performs so passionately, it worked wonders for you.
“What?” He couldn’t help but laugh a little at this moment, it was an awkward laugh, but a laugh nonetheless. “Me and Julie aren’t dating y/n” He spoke and now your worry changed to confusion and mixed feelings, you looked at him with tears falling from your eyes. In that moment he had pulled you into a hug. “In fact, I like someone else, not Julie” He spoke softly whilst in this embrace.
“Is it Reggie?” Your stupid ass blurted out which led you both bursting into laughter. “Yeah those crooked teeth really do something for me” Luke joked sarcastically which was followed by a voice in the garage. “HEY I HEARD THAT” Reggie yelled from inside, that man's hearing must be supernatural or something. You and Luke sat there for a moment in each other's arms.
“So if it's not Reggie then who is it?” You asked as if it couldn’t be more obvious who Lukes puppy dog eyes were mostly for. But as he was about to tell you who it was Alex’s head appeared from behind the garage door.
“Hey y/n! You’re up, it’s time to sing like you promised” Alex intruded happily in an excited manner. He couldn’t wait to hear you sing, so couldn’t anyone else, Especially Luke.
“Yeah yeah i’ll be there in a second” by now you and Luke had left each other's arms after hearing Alex’s voice. Despite everything being almost cleared up you still seemed nervous and Luke could see that.
“Are you… nervous to sing?” Luke asked with a small tilt in his head to which you returned with a silent timid nod in response.
“Ever since Julie's mom died… I developed stage fright.” You spoke honestly, pouring your heart out to Luke. Luke had realised that it wasn’t only Julie that needed help overcoming this, but you too. “She was the one who encouraged me to follow my dreams… she taught me how to sing, how to write music- heck she even taught me how to shred on the guitar” Luke blinked a few times having no idea you could play the guitar. He was shocked, but that wasn’t his main focus at the moment.
“But don’t you see all the people in there who want you to follow your dreams?” He asked pulling your head up so your eyes met, they were only inches away as you were both still sitting. “Reggie, Alex, Julie… they all want you to be happy and sing your heart out… I want you to be happy, you’ve got this!” This wasn’t like any of Luke's pep talks before, it felt warm and comforting, like it's own little melody just for the two of you, no one else. He moved in to kiss you quickly on the forehead before standing up, taking your hand and lifting you up too. “You can do this y/n”
You were in shock, your crush just gave the most gut wrenching pep-talk ever and now you’re expected to perform after all that! Though… you didn’t feel nervous anymore. “Yeah! I’ve got this” A fire lit up in your eyes as you both made it back into the Garage where everyone awaited your return, to sing a song everyone will most definitely remember for the rest of time.

Pov: you’re a new addition to the band and you’re reading through all the songs written in Luke’s book.
Y/n: “home is where my Horse is?”
Luke: “Reggie! What have I told you about putting your country music in my book!”
Reggie: “Hey! Thats a GOOD song right there! I was hoping to make it big with that”
Y/n: “oh is that what the banjo was for…”
Reggie: “WHAT DID YOU DO TO MY BANJO?!”
After accidentally selling his banjo, as per request of Julies dad, you had to make it up to Reggie. So you went on a little pizza date and a walk along the beach. Passing his parent’s house that was now a bike shop, you treat him to some ice cream. He forgave you eventually after all his sulking.

Pov: You’re one of Julie’s closest friends and you were having a party in the Garage with the band. But the noise was getting too much for you so you step outside for some space.
Y/n: “I know you’re behind me”
Luke: “how- how did you know?” *Dumbfounded*
Y/n: “I can sense those cute puppy dog eyes from a mile away”
Luke: “you think i’m cute?”
Y/n: “. . . No comment”
Luke would then proceed to talk your ear off and tease you for calling him cute, making the party more enjoyable for your sensitive ears. After all you could listen and speak to Luke for ages like your own little, yet perfect, harmony.
