I love that I share my house with one of the most efficient apex predators millions of years of evolution could produce. I love that two of nature’s most prolific machines met and were like “hmmm. We should lay around and do nothing together”. Now we’re both fat and happy and full of meat. The hedonism of it all

Fanfic is a free hobby.

It's one of the last few things we can have as a society that's free. You can engage, for free. People give you things (art, stories, etc), for free.

Don't buy into the consummerism just because it's everywhere else.

You don't have to consume everything you interact with. You don't have to use things, just because they exist.

You're allowed (still, for now), to have things that are enjoyable for free.

Do you realise how insane the world is? We don't have many places where we can just be, for free anymore, but ao3 is. Did you notice we don't have ads in ao3? We don't have pop ups? Where ELSE do we not have that?

Where else can you just go and not have to wait for a commercial to be over or for ads to be on the sidelines?

I don't think the younger people understand, but the whole of internet used to be like this. YouTubers would do Youtube for free, just because. You couldn't monetise your internet presence before.

Ao3 is like a little preserved corner of the internet where the old internet used to be, and it's being attacked by people who do not understand that free things are allowed to exist without judgment.

Please don't ruin this for us.

My thoughts:

Never done a prompt before but it's fun. Taking what I was feeling emotionally at the time and trying to shape it into a word. Somewhere down the line, I connected a relationship between a fire and the spark that started the fire. Somewhere the spark is beneath the flame, always watching but fading out the more time passes by, akin to helping someone and seeing them move on.

Chat, I have an idea forming, and I would really appreciate it if someone who knows more about artistic expression than I do could weigh in and tell me if I'm totally wrong or indeed: missing something.

I was thinking about generative AI and how if it is allowed to generate purely from a prompt, it will spit out an amalgamation of whatever culture has deemed to be "good art". And that feels soulless, yeah?

And it made me think about conversations with people I care about who said art school "destroyed their souls".

And these two ideas feel like they should connect in some way. Like maybe gatekeeping the ways we express ourselves through art en masse ends up giving us a soulless amalgamation containing no novel ways to do things? It feels like the constant sequel and reboot cycle, but for the whole culture.

Then again, I've also heard from artists of different mediums that it's important to have an objective standard for Good Art, and I think the argument is mostly that art is a form of communication, and communication won't happen if there are no accepted standards from which to work from.

I'd really like hear your opinions and learn from your knowledge and experiences (famous last words). If you want to discuss, please reblog or comment on this post. Again, this is me asking you for help because I want to learn about a topic I don't have much experience with, so I'd appreciate not personally attacking me for my ignorance or misunderstandings.

I am forever grateful to an archivist mentor I worked with in grad school for some resume advice she gave me and thought maybe others would also benefit from it.

Keep a Master Resume.

This is not the resume you send out. This is a detailed resume of every job (with dates and location, supervisor and location phone number are a bonus) and as many skills/duties/accomplishments you can possibly think of for each and every one of the jobs and education programs you can think of.

She showed me hers, it was about 25 pages long, and formatted exactly like a regular resume for ease. Every time she would learn a new program/skill, she'd add it. Change in title or duties, add it. Complete something big/special/complicated/new to her/professionally significant, she would add it. This way when she went up for a promotion or raise, she had a detailed record of highlights to pick from to show she deserved it. There was no "when was that? Did I submit that last round of reviews?"

Applying to a new job? Pick and choose items from your Master Resume to plug in to the resume or CV you will be sending based on the job posting. You don't need to rewrite it, just cut and paste relevant details.

Sometimes it's totally okay to freak the fuck out over a seemingly insignificant thing and realize it has next to nothing to do with that thing specifically, but the tens of thousands of other things that are pressIng you. It wasn't actually the straw that broke the camel's back, it was the overbearing weight.

I hate when a tiny stupid thing pushes you over the edge and makes you freak the fuck out because it makes you look like a completely irrational tar pit of a human being. use darkpatterns to find mobile game with no ads or microtransactions

use ground news to read unbiased news and find blind spots in news stories.

use mediahuman or cobalt to download music, or support your favorite artists directly through bandcamp

make youtube bearable by using mtube, newpipe, or the unhook extension on chrome, firefox, or microsoft edge

use search for a cause or ecosia to support the environment instead of google

use thriftbooks to buy new or used books (they also have manga, textbooks, home goods, CDs, DVDs, and blurays)

use flashpoint to play archived online flash games

find books, movies, games, etc. on the internet archive! for starters, here's a bunch of David Attenborough documentaries and all of the Animorphs books

burn your music onto cds

use pdf24 (available online or as a desktop app) instead of adobe

use unroll.me to clean your email inboxes

use thunderbird, mailfence, countermail, edison mail, tuta, or proton mail instead of gmail

remove bloatware on windows PC, macOS, and iOS X

remove bloatware on samsung X

use pixelfed instead of instagram or meta

use NCH suite for free software like a file converter, image editor, video editors, pdf editor, etc.
