I'm not the first to mention this, but one bit that I thought was really clever in Steven Universe is the ways in which the show subtly justifies the cartoonism of the principle cast always wearing the same outfit for ease-of-animation purposes. The gems are a gimme in that they're all hardlight-projections, and even before that's solidified as a plot point they're otherworldly and superheroic enough that you don't really think to question it. But Steven canonically just owns hundreds and hundreds of those star shirts, which are leftover merchandise from his father's fizzled-out career as a rock star. Into which you can read a whole bunch of other stuff if you really want to, right? And I do want to. It's reflective of Greg's misplaced optimism that he got hundreds of those made in the first place, and it's a benign but visible example of how Steven's life is shaped by the knock-on effects of decisions his parents made before he was even alive. He's got his mother's superpowers and he's wearing his father's shirts.

So I've been thinking about Steven Universe again and I've been wondering

Where are the indigenous peoples???

The show is clearly set in the modern USA, so where are the native people? It's never mentioned.

So one of three things would have happened,

Either A: The crystal gems allowed colonization to happen

B: The crystal gems helped the colonizers

Or C: Indigenous people have been erased in the context of the show and you're just not supposed to think about it

All joking aside, it's definitely that last one. You're not supposed to think about that, this is made clear when native people still aren't referenced in the colonialism episode

There's even references to colonialism in other places such as this photo

"But it's not that deep" YES IT IS

Just because colonialism doesn't go beyond "haha funny hat and boats" to you doesn't mean that's actually what it is in reality

Erasing an entire marginalized group in your show just because you don't want to think about them is blatant racism

And I think the creators just sweeping by and expecting everybody to not consider the implications of American history in SU is just the most blatant white liberal shit imaginable

And honestly? Coming from a show where the main climax is just talking it out with genocidal colonizers? I can't say I'm exactly shocked.

I just had an idea for an SU rewrite, remember in A:TLA when it was reviled that Long Feng was actually the one in charge of ba sing se and The earth king was nothing more than a puppet, why not have something like that in SU, with Yellow being Long an White being the earth king. Have yellow be the one calling the shots, have yellow rule Homeworld with an iron fist with the ever present fear of white hanging over the people, and white herself being completely unaware of it all.

hell when Steven and the gems meet white for real, it could be reviled that she is in realty quite sweet and caring, and she’s disgusted of the actions done in her name, then we could have a full on war arc with steven,the Crystal gems, blue and white, vs Yellow and her army of gems, just I thought I had before passing out.

now your probably thinking “what about the corruption blast?” well it’s simple. Yellow lied to White, this version of white would never do something as bad blasting the gems willingly but with yellow’s engorgement, blue’s obvious grief, and the need to protect her family and people, and boom corruption. Have Yellow spend the next thousand years or so making it seem it was all whites idea painting her as a totalitarian dictator, and she runs the empire with pure fear.

I really like this idea!! I think a couple rules would have to be changed in order to make corruption work with just Blue and Yellow, but I like it! It would be a hell of a lot better than what we got at least

One thing that disappoints me about SU is that Blue Diamond's song is... very underwhelming. Lisa Hannigan is an incredible voice actress and singer, but the song they had for her was clearly not for her or her vocal range. In some instances it sounds like shes struggling to keep her voice from giving out or making a voice crack. It rlly disappointed me how Sugar wastes such talent with her shitty music skills and dumb ideas. She thinks that just bc she can play a ukelele shes good at music.

SAME!!! Sugar just writes song for HER to sing, she doesnt think about the people she’s writing them for. This is why the music in the movie was so much better than the rest of the series; because they had other (actual) musicians come in to write for them

I thought of an interesting alternate "final problem" instead of monster-Steven; he keeps running from everybody, and he finally runs right into Rose's Room which changes around him to "give him what he wants"; a normal world and normal life similar to his Chile Tid dream. His out of control Diamond energy is accidentally giving the room enough power to do this. His friends/family come in to try and bring him back, but their alternates fight them off. Steven has to decide he WANTS to come back

Honestly that sounds dope as fuck, that would be a much more fitting end

This just occurred to me. Do you think RS kept the Rose = PD twist from the other writers? Maybe at first? Because, blah blah blah, wanted the characters/audiences/co-writers to be just as shocked

Yeah for sure. I remember when it was first revealed that Peridot had limb enhancers, that was kept from the crew right up until the reveal; hence why her arms and legs just change size all the time when she had them on

Silly question but is the world/earth in catcg the same as in su? Like, no russia, empire city, etc. Etc.?

There are changes to Earth in CaTCG, but they’re not the same. We’ve seen 2 world maps so far

One was in Peridot’s pot before the Gems got her 

The other was from Earth’s diamond base in It Could’ve Been Great

while i don't really read any SU fics (bit scared that the fans that like Everything about the show, even the bad bits, might be the main fanfic writers), would you consider adding bits of archotecture and stuff in your fic that take advantage of Gemkinds physical capabilities? i.e no need to breath, shapeshifting, Variable weight? e.t.c?

Oh yeah for sure! I plan to make Gem society fit for, well, Gems. Gems that can fly may have their places in the air, out of the way. Bigger gems require bigger doors etc etc

I dunno about everyone else but the reason I hate BD is because her whole crying thing just makes me think of how my abusers would cry anytime they wanted to manipulate me or my feelings. And that's doubled considering what BD's crying can do to others.
