The Moon’s Watch by C. M. Catagas
A Short Story inspired by @flashfictionfridayofficial‘s prompt
Evangeline had barely a moment to take a breather all day. She had woken up, and spent a moment in her room, the last few quiet seconds she had for a while. As she took her time to get ready, she took notice of a small paper ajar in her door, the corner just barely peeking through from the painted wooden door. Inside, sat a message:
“ The usual place. We meet at midnight. “
The note made her heart skip a beat. She took a deep breath to compose herself as her attendant knocked on her door, coming inside to help her get ready for the busy day ahead of her.
As the day wore on, she gave various yes’ and no’s on all kinds of things. Are red roses to your liking? Is this silk soft enough for you? Is this frosting too sweet? Are you okay, Lady Evangeline? Is there anything else you need, Lady Evangeline?
Of course, her father gave the ultimate decision on everything, so even if she was unhappy with something, it would matter not. The wedding had to be perfect. A perfect union between Evangeline and her suitor, Alexandre.
As per tradition, they wouldn’t be allowed to see each other until the day of, but she often would sneak glances of him as his own father paraded him about the mansion. He passed through the garden as Evangeline sat in the tea room, her opinion now being weighed on for various pastries.
“What do you think of him, Marigold?”
Marigold, assistant to Evangeline’s official attendant, merely glanced at the window before setting down another plate.
“I think he’s quite the handsome man, my Lady. Very well educated, and well-versed in the arts.”
Evangeline turned her gaze upon Marigold, giving her a smile.
“I’m so excited. I can barely wait another moment.”
Marigold returned the smile, a sparkle in her eye. “As am I, my Lady. A new life awaits you.”
The two kept each other's gaze before another servant came in, offering Evangeline another cup of tea.
--
As the sun set, Evangeline looked wistfully after the moon, knowing that she would be the sole witness to what midnight would bring. She knew that she would keep the secret, as she had kept all her other ones as well.
She bid her parents good night, her attendants helping her get ready for her last night in her home. A heavy weight sat on Evangeline’s chest as her nightgown slipped over her shoulders. A bubbling deep in her chest, that put pressure against her lungs, causing her to want to yell out in all kinds of emotions. Excitement. Anxiety. Fear. Anticipation. It all bubbled inside her, ticking at her limbs.
As her attendants left, she lied in bed, taking deep breaths as she calmed herself. She knew what she had to do, and that she had no room for error.
With a final sigh, she opened her eyes, carefully rising from her bed, and listening intently for any sign of noise. She gingerly approached her door, placing one ear against it. Straining to keep herself quiet to make out the slightest of noises in the hallway. Content with the silence outside, she looked to the moon outside, that shone brightly.
A full moon stood out against the glittering void of the sky, a hazy cloud obscuring her crown. She stared on silently, encouraging Evangeline from high in the heavens.
She moved silently through her room, pulling out a suitcase that stood hidden away. From inside laid coiled, a long rope and a commoner’s cloak, a plain dress, and worn boots. As Evangeline changed out her outfits and pulled her long red locks into a tight bun, making it hard for someone to identify her by her fiery hair, she stared out at the courtyard below. At this point, she had stayed up many nights memorizing the guards’ patrol, and pinpointed the exact moment she would make her move.
She did her best to even her breathing as she finished tying up her boots, and inspecting herself in the mirror. No one could possibly mistake her for Lady Evangeline McCoy from what she was wearing. Not even the mansion’s servants would wear such an outfit to clean the fireplace. As time counted down, she took a long stare out the window, watching the two guards separate from their watch to start their patrol. As she watched one walk off around the corner, and the other head off into the garden, she took this as her chance.
Her window opened silently, hitting her face with cool night air as she slowly lowered the rope down. She looked down to the courtyard below, and tugged on the rope, testing its strength. With a deep breath, she began the climb down.
The night proved quiet as she made her way out of the premises, and slipped through town. The moon peeked at her over the rooftops as she made her way through town. As she ran into the woods, the moon lost her in the branches, and that was the last Evangeline would see of her friend for the night.
As Evangeline carefully walked along the carriage path, she startled at the sound of a horse, retreating into the treeline. She stood silently as she heard the horse slow to a stop. After a few silent moments, came a familiar whistled tune, which drew Evangeline out of the forest with excitement.
Evangeline threw herself into the arms of the horseman just as he dismounted. She giggled happily as the horseman squeezed her tight, placing a kiss on her forehead.
“Mari! Oh, I was so scared I was caught! How did you get a horse?”
Marigold laughed as she pulled back her hood. “Well, we need to make a quick getaway don’t we? Oh, Eva! I’m so scared! But I’m happy with you by my side. You give me such strength.”
Evangeline beamed, pulling Marigold in for a kiss.
“Shall we get out of here, my love? Are you ready to leave your home behind?”
Evangeline held Marigold close.
“You know my home is next to you, Mari. We have a new life ahead of us.”
Marigold stared after her love, a warmth growing in her chest.
“To where only the moon sees us.”
Evangeline’s head whirled with wonder and excitement as the wind whipped around her, her and Marigold taking off into the night. A new life for her and her beloved. Where only the moon knows them.
