5/5-Rating of this Book
The Title of this book is called,“March:Book Three.“ The author of this book are :Andrew Aydin,John Lewis, and John Noel Claude Lewis. The authors are telling their own perspective on what it was like for them during segregation, the many difficult circumstances that they went through.
It makes it more powerful having prosecuted civil rights activists tell us what took place during that time because we can get a connection though their story , connect more about what happened to them because they were the ones who were in that situation. The main conflict of this book is how the authors in this book face a huge problem, on racism, segregation, Will they be able to overcome this obstacle and get their rights back. This book is a retell of what happened during segregation in 1849-1950. March:Book Three , is about segregation, how whites are disrespecting blacks as animals, being treated as non-human beings but people who are not wanted. The setting took place in Mississippi, in the South over the mid-1960s .There was a church bombing in Mississippi , it was for the protest that blacks are doing in order to get their right to vote without them having a fear of being killed. Among the people who were killed was ,4 little girls killed in the bombing , and but this is one of many violent attacks that happened in the South. Many blacks are being beat repeatedly, even though some blacks are intimidated of the beatings, violence but some continue on their goals , for their rights while others fear for their lives. Lewis got beaten , was hospitalized and other blacks like him are in the same situation as him. Fannie Lou Hamer was fired from her job, arrested, and severely beaten and she also became the soul of the Mississippi movement. Even though they have many obstacles along the way of portraying their message is, what they are fighting for , they still fight even when things get tough. I think this is a good book because it makes you learn something from reading it, especially if you may not have known some facts that happened during segregation.During those times many blacks suffered ,and people like Martin Luther who was a civil rights activist did in order to start a movement and bring other activists like him to fight this battle. The characters in the book were ,Andrew Aydin, John Lewis, and Nate Powell, and Martin Luther King Jr.They were all civil rights activists who one of the many who fought for freedom, in ending segregation, in a non-violent way. Even though Martin Luther King isn't a author in the book, he played a major role in ending segregation of African-American citizens in the US and he was the one who created the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the rights for black to vote was in 1965. He was an inspiration to others into achieving their goals, he was famous for doing non-violent protests. I would recommended this book to someone because Martin Luther King is inspiring, he was an influential person , even after he died many people looked at him as their role model. Not only MLK was a inspiring person but so was Andrew Aydin, John Lewis, and Nate Powell who went through many things ,accomplished many things in order for them , the people to get their rights. This book had descriptive writing, graphics that were black & white because back then in that time there wasn't any color .I think it was because technology wasn’t really good back then, color wasn't invented at that time. The color of the book all black and white except for the front of the book was really effective and understandable. This book had many information that was detailed , was effective in telling the reader the 5Ws and didn't leave any information out. This book also got an award that has never been given out for graphic novels and were the first to ever receive an award for the, "National Book Award". I give this book a 5/5 because this book talked about world history about racism , and blacks not being able to vote . It had many descriptive words that were powerful also the visual text were really good.

5 / 5 –rating for the book
This book, “I am Nujood, Age 10 and Divorced“, takes place in Yemen, in a rustic village called Khardji, it’s a small, remote, in a rural area. Nujood was forced by her father one day to marry a man who was three times her age, she was sent away from her family, was forced to live with her husband and his family, in an isolated village in rural Yemen. When she was living with them she suffered from physical and emotional abuse from her mother-in-law daily and at night she had to deal with her abusive husband. On the day of their wedding night he took Nujood's virginity away at just 10 years old when her dad specifically told him to wait until her first period. I think this setting is essential because this story line that happened to Nujood happens to many kids around the world , who get an arranged marriage at a really young age to a guy 20 times or 30 times their age, and the story line , the theme, plot wouldn't change at all. The main conflict is, Person Vs. Other, because Nujood has to fight over her so called husband so she can win over him and get the divorce. The problem will be solved by Nujood, one day running from her husband’s house and going for local people who can help her, and finalize the divorce. I think that, because Nujood is a courageous person, even though she has hardships with her in-laws she still fights for her rights and doesn’t stop. I think the plots and subplots make sense, the question, I want to ask is, “What happened to Nujood’s life after she got the divorce, if she went to school, and what is she doing now to help other young girls like her who are in a current relationship with a man who’s 2 or 3 times their age? “ I think I wouldn’t change any parts of the story , because it’s really effective and makes the reader visualize how Nujood must have felt being all alone in a strangers house and what she went through while living there. It has breathtaking and dramatic context that would make the reader emotional, which is what the author may have wanted to do and make connections to Nujood.
The narrator of this book is Nujood, it was really effective with making her the narrator because you get every single detail, information that leads to events in a first person view, we can feel a better emotion by just reading through her story and we can feel her trauma, how distressed she was and the words that she used were really powerful and touching. The Structure of the book affects the story because various flashbacks of what happened to Nujood when she lived with her husband, many parts were unbearable and saddening. Around the world many underage kids who are children are forced to get an arraigned marriage. Countries such as; India, Nigeria, Mexico, Uganda, Egypt, and many more. Most of the time it’s because the family is financially unstable, needs their children to help them out by making money for them and or they make the child get married so they can support their own family. In World Issues, I watched a documentary of girls from countries around the world being sold off to another family, in an arraigned marriage. There was a girl who was from Pakistan, her parents sold her off, the family where the child was being sold off too got dowry (money from their in- laws), they used it to buy their son a used truck. That young girl later became pregnant with a boy, and had to deal with the suffering at such a young stage.
How I feel when I read this book is sad, astonished because a girl like Nujood who had to deal with stress, pain, torture, verbal abuse, at such a young age when she didn't do anything to deserve this from what her only family did to her. At such a young age she dealt with a tremendous event, had to go through many obstacles to get justice and to finalize her divorce was a huge hassle. She felt betrayal from her family, but she had to survive, not lose but to get the rights she deserved. The saddest part of this book was when Nujood, her husband who she got an arraigned marriage too took her virginity from her when she was only ten years old, it must have been traumatizing for her but she was all alone in a stranger’s house with no one to talk too. I recommended this book to people who like non-fiction books like this one, and like to read stories of what happened to people in real life. Someone who would understand this context, what marriage is and the meaning would be perfect for this book. This was my first book I chose from my book shelf of the English classroom that I feel in love with and could read over and over again. The message was very clear, hence I would give this book a rating of 5/5, anyone who reads this book would fall in love with it instantly with the powerful message it has and the events that happened to a young and innocent girl.

POETIC TEXTS
" Where There's A Wall "
By: Joy Kogawa
Retell:
The poem inserted above is called, "Where There's A Wall" by Joy Kogawa ,and its a poem that talks about obstacles , and problems, you may have that is blocking your way in achieving something.
The word being used in each stanza, "wall" , is being used to describe some kind of message and it's basically the main word that is significant to the meaning of the article. The wall is symbolizing how someone is going through an obstacle in life and they can't seem to get past it. In the real world many of us are stuck with obstacles/challenges that we may face that is difficult to get passed. This whole passage is mostly talking about an obstacle someone may be having/ or other people around us , because the author says, "Where there's a wall, there's a way through a gate or door". This is stating that when we wish to either go through a wall or pass , we first have to find a way to get out of it , like either a door and or a alternative route. In the poem it remarks, where there's a wall , there's a way through a gate or door , meaning even though there will be obstacles , coming your way , you can always try to overcome it and can achieve what you may want to achieve; you would always find a way around a wall ,that is stopping you from what you want to succeed in.
The author is using imagery in this poem so it can show what it means for someone to overcome an obstacle , by usually visually descriptive or figurative language. For example, "There are methods of torture for extracting clues to maps of underground passages. There are zeppelins, helicopters, rockets, bombs , battering rams, armies with trumpets whose all at once blast shatters the foundations."The author has used figurative language , visually descriptive language to tell us a more dangerous , and a much intrusive way to overcome a obstacle. And then on the 2nd stanza, she is using a much calm way of overcoming an obstacle , from the text it says, "There there's a wall there are words to whisper by loose brick, wailing prayers to utter, birds to carry messages taped to their feet. There are letters to be written--poems even. This stanza is the opposite as the other one where one shows a more dangerous way of overcoming an obstacle and this one is a more calm way of overcoming an obstacle.
Lastly, the last stanza in the poem is stating, "Faint as in a dream , is the voice that calls, from the belly, of the wall". This line is telling us that whatever method you may be using to overcome an obstacle , there is a way to overcome it. "Is the voice that calls", has personification , and its indicating that there are challenges that is meant for someone to overcome and beat. When we were discussing this poem in class , we came across a line where it said,"from the belly of the wall" , we found what it actually referred to ;the belly of the whale . It’s how a hero is going on a quest approach and people think that the hero has died. Even thought this may seem opposing and adverse , it still has a good motivate towards it as its telling us to beat the obstacle that has been constantly been in our way. To conclude , from this last stanza , the person is getting to overcome their obstacle and is getting much stronger after they've experienced a great ordeal.

In life, even if we have a obstacle in our way, there’s some sort of solution that can get us out of it which would make us more confident and stronger as a person when dealing with these kinds of scenarios. Where others may see inexplicable barriers , they will see challenges to embrace and they will have obstacles to overcome. An example of an obstacle I faced was when , I wanted to be a chef at a young age , but someone told me , your too young to be a chef and you would never become successful. I told them, age is just a number , with that attitude of not being able to accomplish anything at a young age , wont get you far in life. Famous people like, Betty White and other successful entrepreneur. I have experienced many obstacles in my life , mostly all of them were difficult and I had to find a way past it. Where others see impenetrable barriers, they see challenges to embrace and obstacles to overcome.

A obstacle which a billionaire now has faced in the past is , Bill Gates. You wouldn't have ever imagined , the worlds richest person not being able to make money when he started his first device. His first ever company named, " Traf-O-Data " ,and the first ever device he has made , that was designed to read traffic tapes and also capable of processing data did not work out so well. When Bill & his partner , Paul Allen started to first sell the product, it didn't work. Even though they had an obstacle in their way, that didn't stop them from not trying again cause they learned from their mistakes :"Even though Traf-O-Data wasn’t a roaring success, it was seminal in preparing us to make Microsoft’s first product a couple of years later." A few years after, Bill Gates became the richest man in the world ,even when he faced difficulty , he and his partner still fought to make a successful product. Lastly, all famous people have had many obstacles throughout their lives to become who they are today ,and it helped them make their life better ,and it made them a better person mentally ,and physically.
Reflect:
This topic is important because it helps us realize reality, there will be obstacles coming your way , you would need to try and try to be able to overcome it. It helps us realize the only way we would be better people , is from experiencing from obstacles , because without facing them , you wouldn't achieve anything or get far in life. I only recently found out the poetry blog was due, even when I had many isu’s to finish off , I didn't start this until the last minute , it was difficult for me to all of them on the same day , so I did the isu’s that were due first. It was a hurdle I had to overcome ,and very time-consuming .But at the end, I found a way by overcoming this obstacle ,and that was reducing the amount of time I worked on each blog ,and timed how long I would do each blog. This poem motivates us to live our own lives ,and don't think what others would have to say because at the end of the day , the many obstacles you have faced would make you successful in what you may be doing. The questions I had while reading this poem is that, Where did all these ideas come from ? "Why did you choose to write this kind of poem ?, Did the author ever overcome an obstacle where it was unbearable"? After I found out the answer by doing some research I saw that, she was born in Vancouver ,British Columbia, Joy Kogawa , her family were being sent to an internment camp for Japanese-Canadians when it was World War II ,and she has faced lasting scars of racism where she interprets on while writing this poem. I can only imagine ,"How she was feeling when this was going on, Who she turned to when this was going on ?”
This obstacle is long-lasting and would haunt you forever ,its something where you would need counselling and talk to people who would help you because obstacles like this , you can get a mental illness from and its good if you get help from people that you can talk to easily. I think this poem would change the way I think/feel/do , because it made me realize reality while reading , annotating it because, you cant be who you are today without facing obstacles ,and I've experienced numerous amounts of obstacles but found a route to face it. Many celebrities who haven't faced obstacles , think they can get any high career, like modelling by their wealthy parents is wrong because you wouldn't feel like you accomplished it but someone gave you a boost to get to where you are today and haven't earned it in any way.
" Black Sheroes "
By: El Jones

Retell:
This poem is called, Black Sheroes and its about historical black woman who were figures , were were very significant and were civil rights leaders.
Black Sheroes , was a repeatedly used word in this poem ,it means black woman who were heroes and represent the specific beauty that black people have. I know this because in the poem it states that , But my sheroes are more than a trend and they're bigger than a hairstyle , For their people they risk death, imprisonment ,and exile ,and exile. In this stanza , they are describing the beauty of black people , how for their people even if they risk their life they would try to help them in a way. For example, Martin Luther King Jr. who was an civil rights activist help stop racism and fought the rights for blacks to vote.Even when he got imprisoned many times he did it for his people ,even if it meant him being killed , because then he would be remembered as a hero who tried to help get his people equality and get the same rights as whites. On the ninth stanza , it says, " If you're only telling the history of Black men then theres a half that you missed . " The stanza is referring to black men being more acknowledged then woman ,and woman dont get more praise over what they've done because men and woman are both equal and one shouldn't get more praised for the other for doing the same thing. The author states on the 12th stanza it states, "But without civil rights queens like Septima Clark , Diane Nash, or Ella Baker , There would be no kind. " This stanza is saying that these female civil rights activists , Septima Clark ,had developed the literacy and citizenship workshops which had played a significant role in voting rights. Clark developed the literacy and citizenship workshops that played an important role in the lift for voting rights.Diane Judith Nash was an American civil rights activist , a leader and strategist of the student wing in the civil rights movement. Her campaigns have been one of many successful of the era. Ella Baker was an African-American civil rights and also a humans rights activist in Virginia. Without these 3 woman to start the foundation of the civil rights movement , without them it would have started.

An historical event that relates to this poem , is the civil rights movement from 1954 through 1968 which Martin Luther King Jr. was an American Baptist minister and activist and he has become the most striking spokesperson and he was a leader in the movement.
Reflect
This topic is important because we should all know that racism still exists ,and black woman should be recognized the same amount of men because they shouldn't be below men because we are all equal and everyone should realize that. We should recognize black woman who have done so much for the black community because men are only praised and I dont really know much female civil rights leaders like , Harriet Tubman. Even if shes a black woman she shouldn't be recognizable below everyone because they're are many black female civil rights leaders who are a strong force.
" CXIV "
By: SONNET L'ABBE

Retell:
In this poem , its experiencing hate speech , is about discrimination. I know this because they are discriminating against her by treating her different , because shes black. In the second stanza they say , "Go back ,wherever Pakis or niggers come from. " This is one of many hate crimes I've come upon while watching the news . They are ignorant & dont understand the difference between ethnicity and race. In the first stanza they say, "Im not sure whether it happened in Manitoba or Alberta. " They clearly know shes from Canada but still tell her to go to Pakistan. She says, " I walked home alone-- "home" -- i went where my parents paid rent, right ? Our house wasn't ours ? " The young girl wasn't sure if that was her home ,that's why she quoted the word because she feels unwanted by other and doesn't feel like shes suppose to live there.

Text to Self:
I can surely relate to this poem , because Im a Muslim , and Im black. Muslims like me get many hate comments , and several hate-crimes was committed to our Muslim community. If Im on the bus , I get looks mostly by white people , mostly looking at me up & down and I can only think that they're either just looking at me and or don’t like Muslims. Even when I go downtown , to Eaton Centre , theres many white people who have posters who are shouting racist comments about Muslims ,and are saying why are they in our country and so on. Many think that all Muslims are terrorists , have a bomb but , real-life terrorists like ISIS are not Muslims , no where in Islam does it say to kill someone but terrorist groups say , Islamic chants like , " Allahu Akbar ", mostly before they do a terrorist related act.
Many Muslims are subjected as, "Terrorists ", when many people who try to bring up Islam do not know anything about it ,and but claim false news. Just because terrorist do these violent things doesn't mean all Muslims are involved and or pointed as terrorists. Many Muslims are affected by what people say about Muslims on social media , while they share this news to other people they gain more and more hate for us when just some people only say this hate. You shouldn't state facts if you dont know about the religion and arent a Muslim yourself or learned about the practices we do.
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/charleena-lyles-seattle-shooting-pregnant-black-mother-of-four-brettler-family-place-a7797971.html
Text to World: A example that happened June 18,2017 , was the last day a young black mom was last seen alive. Charleena Lyles was a mother of 4 at the time. This happened in Seattle, where she had called police to complain about a burglary. She had been living in a complex home where it's for people who used to be homeless , after the police had arrived at her home, and spotted her armed with a knife. They didn't think twice about why she has a knife , and but they immediately shooted her 2 times in the back and she was supposedly 15 weeks into her pregnancy after her family had confirmed. This happened because of her race , many young black males have been shot because they are, black. Police in America use excessive force while on duty and dont think twice before anything but take out their guns and shoot they have no mercy for you.
Reflect
This topic is significant because many people may not be aware that racism and discrimination is still happening . It does not matter who , where you come from, what race you are , everyone is suppose to gain equality. It doesn't matter how many things you accomplished , or if your parents are wealthy , because we are all human and deserve the same equal rights. Racism and discrimination is a serious & major problem that many people need to realize and think before they say a hate comment against anyone , it doesn't matter if they know them or not because it hurts and just because you may be one color doesn't mean your better than then the person who is a different color than you are.
I didn't really have a person say some racist & discriminating comment , other than look at me up and down and just stare at me for a while. I may be a Muslim, but other people need to realize Muslims are having it hard , are facing Islamophobic hate , and doing hate-crime towards us just because they see fake posts of us online , and think its true . Muslims are not the only ones who are facing the same problems ,and dealing with them. People should realize we are all different and , " what makes us different makes you different makes you stronger. "
" Marrying the Hangman "
By: Margaret ATWOOD

The title of this poem is, " Marrying the Hangman "
Retell:
This poem is about a woman who has to marry a hangman in order to avoid getting a death penalty. This poem is about gender injustice ,and this is situated on a real event that has happened.
The first stanza in the poem is saying, " She has been condemned to death by hanging. A man may escape this death by becoming the hangman, a woman by marrying the hangman. But at the present time there is no hangman;thus there is no escape. So basically what this means is that in order for this woman to stay alive , is only if she marrys a hangman which is a person who is an executioner who hangs condemned people. It was something that was basically a tradition in Quebec in the 1700 ' s where you had to follow these rules to avoid death.
So, because she has to obey these rules, she has to find a hangman who would want to be with her. When she says, " She must persuade this man at the end of the voice, this voice she has never seen and which has never seen her , this darkness, she must persuade him to renounce his face, exchange it for the impersonal mask of death ,of official death which has eyes but no mouth , this mask of a dark leper. " So she must allure the man , into being her hangman in order for her to be alive and marry him as well. She has no choice but to ask him , because its between life and death and she wants to stay alive so she has to fight.
Relate:
Text to self: I'm a woman myself and I can relate to the girl because some cases men have it higher than woman and are classified lower. Especially woman , when they work in their jobs , or young girls are sexually abused by men , are told to not say anything , or are threatened until that man is charged , other woman come forward and you have more support. Woman have it harder than men in many ways and are classified as being not higher than men like different sports, like soccer and shouldn't be in certain things just cause we are woman and cant handle it. Woman are seen as doing all the household chores while men only go to work , make money while the woman have it harder.
Text to Text:
This book reminds me of a book that I’ve read called, I am Nujood,Age 10 and Divorced. In this book,Nujood whos a young 10 year old girl is forced to marry a guy whos 3 times her age because of the family's status and because they were poor so they needed support from Nujood's inlaws. And in this poem, the woman had no other choice but to marry the hangman , if she wanted to stay alive. And in this novel , many other countries like Pakistan , Afghanistan , India ,many others woman are forced into arranged marriages , even as little as a child. Many of these countries there are many reasons why they make the girl get married such as poverty , part of their culture is to have arranged marriages even if you don't love the person. In the poem and this novel it had the same situation as in which they had to marry a person despite knowing the physical , emotional abuse that they would receive but they don’t have any other choice ,and but for them to be able to live they had to do this until they could fight for their rights.
Reflect:
This theme/topic is important because not only in this poem , what happened long ago but even know everyone should be equalized and regardless of what gender you may be , everyone needs to be treated fairly and equally. No matter what sex we may be , we are still humans , it shouldn't differentiate that we came from the same place so we shouldn't be treated differently.
This poem wouldn't change how I view things because I already know gender inequality still goes on , and many woman are treated lower than men which shouldn't happen because men are not different from us only by our sex so I don't understand why they would be better than us? It just made me realize these issues , which I didn't remember about it till I read this poem and many others should be aware of how woman are treated and the suffering they get from , “being a woman”. Many woman on social media have in their bio as being feminists , the amount of woman who are coming forward for this woman's movement is slowly getting there in woman having the same equal rights as men. And woman be acknowledged , the same as men get and should get praise as well. All in All, the poem makes people aware , realize that this is still going on , we need to do something to prevent it from happening and its a reminder to people since this topic is not really recognized.
" I Lost My Talk "
By: RITA JOE

Retell
The poem , "I lost my Talk " , is about the author who is Rita Joe's real life experiences she faced with residential schools and she she talks about the experiences she has come across and the speculation she has.
The first stanza of this poem , shes stating how she lost her talk , the talk you took away , which means she was taken away from her language and her culture and was forced by white people to live in residential schools , left everything behind including her parents and made her forget about her Indigenous background and who she was as an aboriginal person. The last line on the first stanza is telling us the kind of residential school she used to go to in Nova Scotia , Canada , called, "Shubenacadie school ".
In the second stanza , she says , "You snatched it away, I speak like you , I think like you , I create like you ,and The scrambled balled , about my words. Here she is using repetition with using the word , you , with means that she is a mammal like them , shes human like them , she has the same traits as them , so, " why would she be treated differently ". But, she was treated in a unimaginable . They were the people who greatly influenced how she behaved and appeared but they totally changed her lifestyle & they way she used to live before so they were responsible for her actions.
Lastly , the last stanza , she is basically wanting other people who dont have the right needs of getting education , in certain country's to get their rights and to get educated. When she says, "So gently I offer my hand and ask, Let me find my talks, " even though she has suffered a great ordeal she is still offering her hand ,and she is accepting to what already happened to her and is wanting to know about herself after the whites brainwashed them and changed their religion so she has to find herself. She is willing to allows others to know about her , after she finds who she is and learns about her religion. She isin't willing to start violence , but peace , all she wants is for her to be her own person , no one telling her what religion to be in because that's her choice. Even though she has faced an obstacle , thats life scaring that she wouldn't forget , she still accepts what happened to her and is willing t go past it and move on.
Relate
I have never has an experience where my culture was snatched away from me. Im a Muslim and I follow the many rules we have to follow , the traditions. This girl in the poem never got to practice anything about her religion cause she got forced to follow a religion which wasn't hers and had no choice but to follow it. My parents are are Ethiopian , but they speak Somalian but I understand it but dont speak it at all. Many Canadians now a days dont know how to speak their parents language ,and they wont be able to pass it on to their kids and the next generations after. We would have certain celebrations like Eid , which comes once a year after Ramadan where all Muslims come together to celebrate .Its a celebration among Muslims when we break our fast and give money to the homeless during Eid al-Fitr which marks the ending of the holy month of Ramadan. We would make foods such as, samosas, dates, and many delicious foods and sweets. I love my culture ,and if I was ever forced away from it like how Rita Joe was then I wouldn't know what to do. Rita Joe , and many other Indigenous children that got taken away from their parents , must have been really difficult and saddening to just be snatched away your culture one day and cant really do something about it.
Reflect
This topic is obviously significant its world history, it explains that importance to readers that we all have equal rights , shouldn't be judged on what culture we have because thats what makes everyone different and unique. We all deserve to be cared for , and safe . What Rita faced would stay with her forever , but its something that would make her into a better person , wanting to be good at her culture even more so that she can teach other people about it and speak about to always know your culture so you can identify who you are and differentiate yourself from others. The questions I have are, " How did Rita feel when she was free from the residential school and what was going through her mind ? , " How did she pass the obstacle and face the residential school she was living at ? "
I think this poem wouldn't change how I feel about this topic because , I already know about residential schools ,learned it in history class in grade 10 how it was like. I know how I feel about this topic and how I feel about aboriginals and what they have to face in the schools such as , beatings , verbal , sexual and even mental abuse which can scare them for life , and but even have mental issues after they came out of the residential schools.

She cared what other people , the society thought of her that it made her self-conscious and didn't decide thing's for herself. Anya sometimes skipped school ,and didn't put much effort into her classes and that's why she never got good grades at school.
I would recommended this book to someone because it has eye-catching pictures , the colors make you want to open the book and start to look through it. The book thoroughly had a good opener and conclusion and talked about events that happened in detail. The book had a good conclusion and it didn't make you think , "why did they end it like that" ,and but made you think that the book ended off in a good way.
In my opinion,Anya remind's me a lot of people in society.Since Anya was a non-popular girl and she didn't really have much friends. Many of them care what other people think of them, and but in reality you weren't born to please other people, god didn't create you for other people to like you, because you'll have a lot of people who dislike you,it's either they don't have something that you have and or they are jealous of either how pretty you are or how financially stable you are. Even if you mind your own business they would still try to find a way to bring you down and or say a lie about you.

I am Malala:The Girl who stood up for education and was shot by the Taliban
This book is a non-fiction book which tells a tail about a girl named Malala who was shot by the Taliban when she got off a school bus that came from her school and two of her other friends were shot as well. Malala tells her tail on which she was shot by the Taliban. She recovered for those few months and after she healed how she wanted to help other young women who are being shot by the Taliban and how she wants to make a change. And how she's reached across other people who are astonished how she survived, and she inspired other girls too and how she's become an inspirational symbol of inspiration, bravery and but her survival instilled educators with courage.
I'm still reading the book and but that's basically the whole message of this book.
So, far I enjoyed this book , me as a Muslim I can really relate to Malala's viewpoints, and the certain practices as a Muslim her and her family must follow. It makes you re-create the whole scene that has happened to Malala , what she must have went through and her family to deal with the tragic event that has happened to her. This book makes you feel sad but yet happy because even though she got shot in the head by the Taliban she didn't just stop and rest when she recovered from her wound but she fought for her rights and freedom. Malala is a girl who fought for her rights and never hesitated.
I would recommend this book to another person because it's a very eye-catching story and it tells the tale in which she told and it has interesting events that take place that would make you wanting to read more of the book. Especially if your a girl who's reading it you would relate more because she's fighting for the rights of women who have been shot or in the near future could be shot. I think I would want to read more books from Malala because this is the first book I've read from her and it touched me and I know her other books would be just as good.

The Nobody
This book starts off with a stranger coming into a tiny, isolated fishing village of Large Mouth and causes serious confusion as to why he even came to stay in this area. He came to the village with wearing a weird costume consisting of wearing bandages head to toe, wearing weird goggles and he stayed at the residence in the slept town's motel. The village hears of his tragic story of his past and how he succumb a accident that left him damaged from all over. They felt bad for him and how he ended up this way and how he's going to be left with this image for life. The town decides to treat him as they would treat other people in the town and even though he may have covered up something from his past and hasn't completely told the whole story to his past.
I think this book overall is really mysterious because how the Stranger isin't who he really said he was ,and how the book is suspenseful because you want to read more , find how what kind of person the stranger is and who he really is. The author is effective because we eventually find out that the stranger is a guy who's really a ghost because when they shoot him at the end at the lake , they find no blood , don't find his body so everyone thinks that he wasn't a real human and so the author does portray what he wanted to because we find out what kind of person he was and how he was lying front the start when he was talking about his past.
I would recommend this book to someone because it is really mysterious,it has a good plot , images , colors that make the book stand out and make you want to read it. This book has a good setting because it's in a small village where there's not a lot of people living there , everyone know's each other so that's why they butted into The Nobody's past to find out what kind of guy he is and what kind of person they're going to have living in their village. The Nobody had a good ending because at the end we found of the suspense that we wanted to find out of what kind of person The Nobody was and how he wasn't who the villagers expected but felt that something was off about him and no one in the village should approach him.

yummy
This book is about a young 11 year old boy named Yummy who lived in Chicago ,in a neighborhood called Roseland. He belonged to a gang called the Black Disciples. His neighborhood was full of gangs and it was even unsafe to step outside your door. They told him to prove himself worthy of the gang and told him to shoot at a group of gang rival members. He shot and hit someone who wasn't the target. His neighborhood friend Shavon Dean got hit with one bullet and died. Yummy felt terrible about it , the gang told him to hide himself for a few days because the Police were looking for him and wanted signs of him where all over his neighborhood. His so ''called" gang members took him to a railroad track to see a guy named monster , but they sabotaged him and instead ended up killing him.
The character Yummy ,is a young boy who is scared but also has no choice. He is a boy who just caught up with a wrong group of people and if he had things to keep him occupied like soccer classes, or anything else he would enjoy he wouldn't be caught up with the bad guys. Yummy in the inside is an innocent kid who just shot the young girl because the gang told him to and he got influenced but then afterwards felt awful and regretful that he has shot his childhood friend. He just got into the wrong group of people, didn't have another other choices of what to do but be outside all day ,because he never played outside like other kids but did criminal acts.
Out of 10 i would rate this book a 8 because it has eye-catching graphics that catch your attention even though there black and white. This book reminds you of a real life scenario of people getting caught up with a bad group of people , getting a consequence because of it. It teaches you a lesson of not to get into this kind of scenario because it could end up you in jail or you could die from it. This book has a good starting and a good ending from what could happen to you if you end up being in a gang or with bad influences.

March:Book Two
This book is about segregation, how white people ruled black people and tortured them, physically and mentally abused them .Black people weren't allowed to sit on the same side as white people on the bus , if they found them on any property that said "whites only" then they would get beat up and or killed in different circumstances. Violence was a serious problem back then , many people didn't get justice because back then they would either kill you or near you if you file a police report against them. They wouldn't care about what you thought ,didn't listen to what you had to say but just got you jailed. But as the violence got worse, our protests became more aggressive.
The author of the book clearly wanted to send a message of segregation, how it's still going on in parts of the world. Its a Serious problem and people shouldn't be treated like animals because of their race. They don't get justice and the police wouldn't get charged for beating them or murdering them. Since the police is in a higher position then the person who got killed then they wouldn't get justice and a fair trial and at the end the police officer wouldn't get convicted.
This book show's segregation back then and how sad it was now to see how Black's were treated back then. Black activists wanted to have freedom, to stop racism and black's being treated unfairly and like animals. They do non-violent protests, because that's what they were famous for , and why would they copy White's who are acting violent towards them that sane why as them , they are trying to send a message and that is that they do non-violent protests and show peace towards the other side. Martin Luther King was a figure of holding non-violent protests, he believed that is was one of the ways that he and other activists like him can show that non-violent protests is a weapon against and racist and unjust society.
An Example of my own that's happening today is young black men dying because of police brutality, police killing them just because they're black and they think they'll have a weapon on them. A real scenario that happened in Toronto that was on the news was about a young black male named Dafonte Miller,19 who was brutally beaten and blinded in his left eye. On the day that this happened , Dafonte , his friends were walking down Erickson Drive,in Whitby ,were heading to another friends house when two men tried to confront them and began chasing them with a metal pipe. His friends managed to escape but he was left behind , was repeatedly hit with a metal pipe , they eventually had to remove his left eye ,and he also suffered a broken nose, jaw and wrist. It was considered the 2 men committed this act based on his race and because he's a young black male. They think every black male are armed, are dangerous , accuse them of having a weapon on them ,and that's why many of them have been killed.
The link to the article of the young black man Dafonte Miller who was brutally beaten
http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/siu-charges-toronto-police-officer-1.4209353
This book overall was shocking yet really good because it explained , showed how black people survived when their was segregation, and how they were treated and what they had to deal with in a day to day basis. Many whites owned lands, the police, the government, courtrooms, the law,the armed forces and the press. Also , the political system denied blacks the right to vote. The graphics, the many beatings that was going on in the book clearly showed how helpless black people were and had to suffer being treated poorly by white people.

I am Nujood,Age 10 and Divorced
Characterization 3.1, 3.2, 3.3 added all together (Plot development & setting and mood
This book, “I am Nujood, Age 10 and Divorced takes place in Yemen, in a rustic village called Khardji, it’s a small, remote, in a rural area. The story takes place in a rustic village called Khardji, Yemen. On the day of their wedding night he took Nujood's virginity away at just 10 years old when her dad specially told him to wait until her first period. I think the plots and subplots make sense, the question, I want to ask is what happened to Nujood’s life after she got the divorce, if she went to school, and what is she doing now to help other young girls like her who are in a current relationship with a man who’s 2 times or 3 times their age. I think I wouldn’t change any parts of the story , because it’s really effective and makes the reader visualize how Nujood must have felt being all alone in a strangers house and what she went through while living there. It has breathtaking and dramatic writing that would make the reader emotional which is what the author may have wanted to do and make some connections to Nujood.
Countries such as;India, Nigeria, Mexico, Uganda, Egypt, and many more. Most of the time it’s because the family is financially unstable, needs their child's family to help them out, and or they don't want to take care of the child anymore and sells them to another country.
She probably felt betrayal from her family, and but she had to survive, not lose but to get the rights she deserved. The saddest part of this book was when Nujood , her husband who she got an arraigned marriage to took her virginity from her when she was only ten years old, it must have been traumatizing for her and but she was all alone in a strangers house with no one to talk too.

#4 Principles of Quality Journalism
Retell: The 10 elements that are common to good journalism are:
Journalism's first obligation is to the truth
It's first loyalty is to citizens
It's essence is a discipline of verification
It's practitioners must maintain an independence from those they cover
It must serve as an independent monitor of power
It must provide a forum for public criticism and compromise
It must strive to keep the significant interesting and relevant
It must keep the news comprehensive and proportional
It's practitioners must be allowed to exercise their personal conscience
Citizens, too, have rights and responsibilities when it comes to the news
Relate: I have heard most of the elements that I've listed such as, its first loyalty is to citizens, journalism's first obligation is to the truth, it must serve as an independent monitor of power, and it must keep the news comprehensive and proportional. We have read many articles in class , that have different elements of fake news such as , bias , propaganda , satire , so on and we learned what traits these elements have and how we can spot them. It should always, have to be precise and should have a purpose of truth. I think in Canadian news media these elements are present because they all show these traits in their news and it's clear to point them out when reading their article. Canadian news sites such as , BBC and The Toronto Sun all have information that we can trust and not debate on whether we should do more research on the website to see if its fake or not. The thing they most want to have in their work is they don't want to attempt in the most truthful way and but so they can have an accommodation that is more down to earth. I think not necessarily some media outlets are better than the other because they mostly have the 10 elements of good journalism and there's really not one or another that's better than each other. In class we got to see which sources are
Reflect: I don't "work like a journalist" when I'm consuming news. I think Canadian Citizens don't do the same because some don't really know the knowledge of the 10 elements of journalism, even if they did they wouldn't automatically remember to use it because it's not something that we are used to doing. Many people who I have on social media , or I may know personally post memes , or news that they may like even without checking if it may be true or not but if it doesn’t seem interesting to them then they just scroll to other things they may be looking for. For a healthy democracy we need to be more aware of our surroundings on social media and be more aware of what we come across when looking for news or come across news. A journalisms role in the media plays a significant role in shaping a democracy and we need to act like journalists and apply these rules when we are not sure of news we see. When people obtain information from social media they should fact check it before posting it or sharing it to others. If we are unable to double-check the news source then we are most likely spreading bias, or propaganda which can affect the people around us if we are not careful. News sources, such as TV news channels that gives us a scope about who the right candidate to elect for mayor, or president helps people; particularly illiterates know who they want to represent them. Most people get their information off the news to see what kind of mayor or president to elect for based on which candidate could potentially make our city or country better and has the much better plan of helping others out. And they see who can help them and can potentially make their future better for them and or their kids. I think if we don't do this, I think people wouldn't many people who want to do journalism, don't follow these rules would do major trouble to the whole population and would ruin the way people think about journalism and how they feel.

#5 Researching Reputations
Retell:
Credible News Sources:
In society, we may find new stories that are true or some that are fabricated, but where do we most often find real truth, real facts in a new era of internet hoaxes? We are living in a world nowadays where a few celebrities, politicians, other areas of media that spreads false news with privilege.
Here's a list of the 10 largest brands where you can find real and reported facts:

The Wall Street Journal

Least Credible Sources:
1. Websites that plagiarize other news sites URL
2. Sites that have Satire and exaggeration
Fake news sites that have satire, is used to use humor, irony, exaggeration, to ridicule or to expose and criticize people's stupidity or vices particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other typical issues. Fake news sites such as, "The Onion", has content of news that's been either exaggerated or put into humor. There are many websites like, The Onion, so you should be more attentive when it comes to these types of sites.
3. Fake News Sites
News Sites that create fake news usually fabricate news that's been on the news and put their own spin to it and add either satire, or bias, and or they spread fake news. Fake News is usually spread over social media, many people talk about fake news that's been put up on social media for some time.
Relate:
I recognize some of these sources, and not any of the least credible sources. I immediately recognized the credible news sources such as; The News York Times, the Washington Post, BBC News. These listed are well-known news sources that is used world-wide and which I've started to get to know some of these credible news sites from social media. The news that's listed untrustworthy I think I don’t have enough knowledge on those certain types of sites to acknowledge if their trustworthy and or I don't analyze enough to recognize if they are or not. There's so many least credible sources, from The Onion which is a famous satire site, TheSpoof.com, DuffleBlog.com and many more. Fake news sites have increased drastically, that sometimes I lose track how much of them there are.
Reflect:
I don’t disagree with the credible sources, especially in assignments or projects I've used these sites and they've helped me in a positive way. These credible news sources haven't been blamed of distribution of fake news, and or biased information. In class, when we were analyzing these texts it gave me a better understanding on these news sources and the way I think about them. It’s safe to say I can use these sources on projects or whatever I may be doing and I don’t have to worry if my work has bias or other fake news as I can trust them now. It made me more aware of what websites I should use, or being cautious of ones I use in the future. Info wars is an example of fake news and posts a lot of bias and fake news. An Example, from the website is MLK niece: “Trump is not a racist”. This is extreme bias because why would an activist and a civil rights leader’s niece talk about Trump not being racist when MLK was fighting against racism for blacks so it doesn’t add up. It just wanted to state the fact she’s MLK niece and wanted to be prejudice against her by stating that because everyone knows Trump is racist and especially his niece would be far from stating he’s not a racist. Yes, after researching different media outlets reputations it has altered my thinking about particular media outlets. It has given me a better understanding of credible news sources and ones that are least credible sources and I can go to these websites without having to worry about it having information that is biased or fake news. I got more knowledge on other least credible sites that are fake such as,
· WorldNewsDailyReport.com
· Huzlers.com
· RockCityTimes.com
· iTagLive.com/
· GomerBlog.com
The list can go on of fake news sites but that's the list of some that I've encountered and learned about while researching for fake news sites.

#6 The Failure of the Fourth Estate
Retell: Summarize the arguments made by this panel
This panel discusses how journalism is significant and why we need it in our society and our day to day lives, and to appreciate how important they really are. It tells us how the government is not trustworthy, they often don't tell the truth, and so journalists need to unveil their hidden fake news to the society so they know what the real story actually is. Journalists have to be present as watchdogs, the Fourth Estate, so they can be of assistance to make sure the government is not lying and the journalists can cover up their lies and the job of the journalist is to always uncover truth and to be able to work with general issues or specialize in certain issues even if it risks their own lives. If the government tells us a lie, people believe what they are telling us, the people who would uncover their lies, that’s where a journalists job comes into play, they collect, write, and or distributes news.
Even if journalists provide us with covered up news, or current news that's happening in the news, they can still give us fake news, and not only the government. Even though one celebrity who gets accused of sexual assault, was fingered by tons of woman, and but if another celebrity did the same, no one says anything, and didn't blame them of their doing's then that should not be a reason for that person to not pay for their crimes, their behavior because it doesn't matter how popular that celebrity may have been, it matters that the woman gets justice for her rights as a woman. Many journalists are one-sided when it should view many aspects. One-sided opinions don't tell us everyone's point of view but just one, in this case it's not the full coverage. For Instance, if students are voting for a president of their school, many people choose the same person, tell other people to vote for that specific person, and but even though it may not be the person who they wanted to vote for. It's one-sided, we don't get other people's opinions on other candidates for president of their school. To conclude, journalism should, must cover every point of view and side completely.
With fake news going on social media drastically, people are becoming more aware of these sites, as to doing some research on that fake news and to find the real news. Technology had stretched over the years, with the expansion journalists are able to publish, get sources they need to get information for their news. News can be published, can send to social media productively making it easier for journalists, they can have many viewpoints, and an audience that they can attract their specific news too. In Conclusion technology is very helpful and useful and it makes people's life much easier.
Relate: Have you ever heard of or noticed any of these concepts before: Journalisms key role in democracy, criticism of Corporate or Mainstream Media, the internets impact on journalism? This panel focussed on US TV news--do you think the situation is as bad for Canadian and print news?
I haven't heard of any of these concepts before. I think the situation is existent in Canadian and print news , Canadian media has been more balanced in political coverage , there is no doubt about that on broadcasts of US news stories our Canadian media serves us better than American Broadcast media.
Reflect: Do you agree that independent journalism is critical to a healthy democracy? Do you think the internet will ultimately be good or bad for journalism & democracy?
I think independent journalism is critical to a healthy democracy because they don’t have to get permission from anyone to write about covered up news, or news in general. They don’t care about causing inconvenience or embarrassment, and don't have to win votes from anyone. They are allowed to write of anything from the economy, the environment, or a country and which politics don’t have a say. Independent journalism is especially important because it plays a role in creating and making a healthy and democratic society. In society today many news stories that has been shared has been intentionally , or overall untruthful and so the journalists job is to verify , dig in for the true story and to explain to everyone what the truth actually is. Its job is to uncover hidden activities by either governments or corporations and to unveil the truth.
I think the internet will ultimately be good for journalism & democracy because people are able to share their opinions, their views on certain topics and how they feel about it. Information on the internet can be scattered quickly ,and if one person see's one news broadcast , or a video , they can send it to people and their friends will be sending it to each other’s one by one then many people have seen it by then. If journalism will survive in society then the readers have to see the value in it, and how much time it takes, trouble and danger for journalists to uncover hidden news. In conclusion, at times the internet is a good place and bad but if people don't recognize journalists and appreciate them in uncovering news then how can they be more out there and involved without people's seeing in journalists.
#7 Mapping US News Quality
Retell: Summarize the outlets in each of the rectangles: news (green), fair interpretations of the news (yellow), unfair interpretations of the news (orange) nonsense damaging to public discourse (red).
Green Rectangle: The green represents news sites that produces news that is real. Media Organizations such as ; The New York Times , BBC , ABC NEWS, The Washington Post and many more. They publish news daily, although they can have bias they still tell us day to day events that are happening. They broadcast these news themselves, sometimes even go to scenes where it took place or is taking place at that moment.
Yellow Rectangle: The yellow represents a fair insight of the news, they analyze news thoroughly and even though sometimes their opinions may be unclear of how accurate the news may be. This news is trusted, but it has bias and can change how they carry on the news. The news sites present in this panel are ; Mic, The Weekly Standard , The Economist , Daily Beast , The New Yorker and so on.
Orange Rectangle: The orange represents an unfair persuasion, and an incomplete story of news. It only has certain parts of the story, not the whole piece, but got news where they think readers will want to read and are not transparent with info they are giving us. By not giving us the whole story the readers will not be able to learn about what they read because it's written as a puzzle none of the pieces are all there. The sites listed in this sections are, BussFeedNews, The Huffington Post, New York Post, Federalist, and, many more. These media sources have a slight liberal bias , they often tend to publish accurate information that apply words that influences an audience by using appeal to emotion or stereotypes so they can favor liberal causes.
Red Rectangle: The red represents propaganda / contains misleading info. It changes the way readers, or the public views and thinks about the certain news. These sites have a huge amount of bias, and it shouldn't be dependable or used. The following are news sites in this section, Patribotics, Natural News, U.S. Uncut, Palmer Report and many more.
Relate: There are other grids like this being constructed on the web - have you seen any of them? Which do you think is best? Would you organize the grid differently? Do you recognize all these media outlets? Do you agree with their placement on the grid? Are you surprised by any of them? Where are the media outlets you usually read on the grid? Do you frequent any of the outlets labelled “nonsense damaging to public discourse? ‘Will this method of organizing news change your media consumption habits?
No, I haven't seen any of these grids constructed on the web before other than this one, New Quality. I think the grid is a little bit too busy, all over the place so how I would change it differently is make the rectangles where the news sources are a little smaller, and make the information listed take some away and only add the important things we need to know. I think the labels should have been more specific and clear. I recognize some of these media outlets like BBC, CNN, The New York Times, The Washington Times, ABC News, CBC News, and Fox News. Yes, I do agree with their placement on the grid because I think that's where each news source goes and it makes sense where they are placed. I think it wouldn't really change my media consumption habits because I wouldn't always have this chart and I don’t think I would automatically think to use it or remember. But, I think after reading this chart I would have more knowledge on these news sources, how, when to use them and which are fake and which are real news.
Reflect: we're used to thinking about media outlets on a right-left axis to talk about bias. What do you think about the need to add a "quality" axis in an age where most people get their news from social media?
I think the need to add a "quality" axis in an age where most people get their news from social media ; you need to think how reliable the source is , where and who's reporting it and where it comes from and if there's more than 1 person reporting the news broadcast. They would need to know the basics of what you should know when you visit a news sources website. It should be reliable and honest, should provide quality, and a trustworthy content for viewers.

Countries such as;India, Nigeria, Mexico, Uganda, Egypt, and many more. Most of the time it’s because the family is financially unstable, needs their child's family to help them out, and or they don't want to take care of the child anymore and sells them to another country.
