While Latvia was part of the Soviet Union, Jūrmala was a favorite holiday-resort and tourist destination for high-level Communist Party officials, particularly Leonid Brezhnev and Nikita Khrushchev. Although it has many amenities such as beach-houses and concrete hotels remain, some have fallen into disrepair. Day of the Restoration of Latvian Independence is a Latvian national holiday and event, being celebrated annually on 4 May. It marks, like the other Baltic republics, the restoration of the Latvian Republic by official declaration by the Supreme Soviet of the Latvian SSR on May 4, 1990. The station was built in 1861 with the project of architect Johann Felsko. It was expanded in 1885 following the project of Heinrich Scheel. Two separate stations were in operation in 19th century — one serving the line to Daugavpils and the other towards Jūrmala. They were joined and reconstructed in 1914 and functioned until the 1960s. Turaida Castle is a recently reconstructed medieval castle in Turaida, in the Vidzeme region of Latvia, on the opposite bank of the Gauja River from Sigulda. Building of the castle was started in 1214, upon directions given by Albert, Archbishop of Riga to his Livonian Brothers of the Sword (soon to merge with the Teutonic Order) at the place where previously had stood the wooden castle of Liv. St. James's Cathedral, or the Cathedral Basilica of St. James is the Roman Catholiccathedral of Riga in Latvia. The cathedral is dedicated to Saint James the Greater. The building is part of the Old Riga UNESCO World Heritage Site. The church building was dedicated in 1225. It was not originally a cathedral since the Rīgas Doms served that function. Riga Cathedral is the Evangelical Lutheran cathedral in Riga, Latvia. It is the seat of the Archbishop of Riga. The cathedral is one of the most recognizable landmarks in Latvia, and is featured in or the subject of paintings, photographs and television travelogues. Like all of the ancient churches of the city, it is known for its weathercock. The church is commonly called the Dome Cathedral, a tautology as the word 'Dome' comes from the German Dom meaning 'cathedral'. The church was built near the River Daugava in 1211 by Livonian Bishop Albert of Riga, who came from Lower Saxony in northwestern Germany. It is considered the largest medieval church in the Baltic states. What really strikes at the Baltic coast is the combination of sandy beaches with an obligatory strip of pine forest. As far as I know, this is a rather rare combination and there are not so many places where one can see coniferous forests directly close to the seashore. This May we had a roadtrip to Riga, Latvia. It started nice but when we arrived at the border customs we saw an endless line of cars. Damn holidays! After 10 minutes of discussing the situation we decided to go another checkpoint which was about 120km away. There were slightly less vehicles but after all we spent there about 10-11 hours waiting to cross.
