Story time. I had an older gentlemen come into the shop yesterday (I work at a craft store) and buy a cute wreath we had on sale with all sorts of pumpkins and gourds on it. We’re doing normal chatting and I mention it’s a cute wreath and he asks if I think he should get another one for Thanksgiving because this was going to be his October wreath. I was like “nah man it’s good for both holidays, nobody will think it’s weird if you leave it up for two months!” as I hand him his receipt.
He then paused and said “Thank you, my wife died of early onset Alzheimer’s last year and I never really understood why she had so much fun decorating the house but it looks silly without a wreath on the door.”
And in that moment my heart broke a million times and I said I was sorry for his loss and his wife would have loved the one he picked out.
Moral of the story, vulnerable people make this world so much better and I couldn’t even remember the rest of my shitty shift because I was so touched he wanted to share that with me as a total stranger.
