everyâlesser knownâcanon fact about Levi Ackerman.
infamously over the years, there have been countless false rumors about Levi in particular out of the cast. many of them have become popular, even ubiquitous, and it's annoying!
and also disheartening when you find out it's not true....
and hurtful when you realize it was - sometimes - made up by trolls.
so i'm making this post<3
credit to @levisfavoriteacup for the idea!!
*disclaimer: i'm not perfect, so this may not be Everythingâąïž but I am confident that it's the majority of information available, and that it's trustworthy. :)
First the most populars. There is no evidence across interviews nor other content over the years that:
Levi is ugly, and is considered ugly in AOT.
Nope. See here: (tumblr link), or:
Isayama finished his first sketch of Levi mostly on a whim, but the moment he drew his face, he had a sense it would work well / he knew he had something good. Something told him: "the yaoi fangirls are going to like this one".
As time passed and his popularity grew, Isayama caught onto this and wanted to portray him more attractively (in multiple ways) to the viewer/reader.
But from the beginning, this was something of the goal. He is short because Isayama had in mind what young women/fangirls in Japan consider attractive: a man with a higher-pitch voice; has a small face; and who is "short but strong".
In the world of AOT, he (in a nutshell) is mostly considered plain or awkward, but combined with his reputation and style, he's very charming. "He cleans up nice." Overall, it is positive :) But more importantly, realistic I think.
He's also something of a celebrity. People who advertise their product as being used by him are more successful; when he's seen in a shop, this by itself is considered "advertising" and more people come in. Quote: ""the tea that the hero boughtâ".
He's definitely not a 2/10 at any rateđ.
âthe 24th episode of Naoki Yoshida's Anime Plan, 2013 / Interview with Frau Magazine, 2013 | Hajime Isayama x Hikaru Suruga (2014) | AU Smartpass - Erwin & Levi Close Up Interview Part 1 | Taking shelter from the rain reprise: Levi and Peaure
Leviâs type would be someone whoâs "tough, feminine and sensual".
Levi's type "might" be tall people. But context matters, because in multiple translations "don't you think?" and "might be" are thrown around a lot. Isayama isn't known for his clarity. When asked, he practically said the question right back. âfan Q&A from a festival in Betsumaga, Aug.2014
What this quote might have come from is a statement by the author of an article Isayama was likely involved in. I can't say this is 100% canon, but in my opinion it's a little less canon than the Smartpass AUs; if those are sub-canon, then this is sub-sub-canon:
Levi's romantic type is someone who walks three steps behind him, and likes cleaning.
In the past, in Japanese culture, for a wife to walk three steps behind her husband implied highly traditional gender roles. What this is much more likely to mean is that Levi's romantic type is someone who will let him protect them, or will run away and survive even if it costs his life. (And they have to like cleaning.)
âthe article is from 2013, and no longer exists. but the link was used as recently as 2021 as a source in this post by a reliable translator. I've found this quote also in varying qualities of translation across Japanese and English forums, so to the best of my knowledge, it's reliable.
Levi's cravat is a piece of his mother's dress + he was wearing her dress when Kenny found him.
This is a popular rumor that Isayama has never confirmed (i think it is true, tho.)
December 25th was chosen by his comrades because he doesn't know his actual birthday.
The guidebook only states that it is his birthday. I can't find any more context on this. âAOT Guidebook; p.256
His character profile:
âAOT Guidebook; p.78â79
His name is Hebrew, and means "attached" or to be "joined".
Isayama came up with Levi's name after watching American documentary "Jesus Camp". (It's about a summer camp-type program where evangelical Christian children are taught extreme beliefs. One of the children was named Levi.) Isayama heard it and thought it sounded cool. âHajime Isayama x Hikaru Suruga (2014) | 2010 blogpost by Isayama
Levi also had a deep conversation with Eren after the final battle like Eren had with Armin. Levi finds the ocean beautiful, but he more finds it mysterious. Despite growing up in a place like the Underground, he always believed there were "noble" qualities running through his blood; he was meant for more than the least had to offer. -Q&A for AOT's 15th anniversary
Levi is in his early 30s (in s3/RtS/volume 19). âInterview, Universal Studios Japanâs SNK THE REAL exhibition, 2016 | confirmation
If Kuchel was still alive, Levi would want to make sure she had an easy life. This means specifically filial piety, a concept exclusive to the East: he would fulfill his duties as a son for her. (tldr he's a mama's boy :3) âBessatsu Magazine, 2019
Levi would have thin facial hair, but he prefers not to, so he shaves frequently. âJanuary 2020 issue of Bessatsu Magazine (chapter 124)
He doesn't like coffee milk or coffee jelly. They're out of the question even.đ€ âJuly 2018 issue of Bessatsu Magazine (chapter 106)
He just gets depressed when he drinks coffee. Maybe he loves tea that much? He stopped calling Hange names like 'shitty glasses' since they became commander because he "seems" to respect their position that much. However, a Smartpass story delves deeper into this (and states as I suspected): [After Hange makes a joke] "Since becoming the commander succeeding Erwin, theyâd toned down on their past speech and behaviour that had a touch of tomfoolery; Levi understanding that they were nevertheless trying to maintain the self âthat was the case thenâ, also loses the will to curse at them." + "In the past, Hange had a Hange-type dream, and should have been progressing to that purpose. That lately, was it the weight of the office of commander, or was it due to the reality that is âall the world was our enemyâ, their manner had changed considerably." âMay 2017 issue of Bessatsu Magazine (chapter 92) | Goodnight. Sweet dreams, dear. Act II: Levi
If he and Kenny had fought one-on-one, Levi would've won. âDecember 2016 issue of Bessatsu Magazine (chapter 87)
intermission: all about tea
His favorite "food" is black tea. No actual food.
He doesn't add sugar or milk to his tea because he considers it too expensiveâwhich it is canonically. Despite this, he will share his tea with his comrades (his original squad as far as is seen).
Even though he's Captain, he'd rather drink it straight (the implications of which are he's a hardworking man, like that of a farmer. aka, this makes him seem humble).
If a time of peace ever came, Levi wants to open a black tea shop (he said in a dreamlike way, not so much based in reality).
He also knows a good amount of facts and history about it. He's a tea enthusiast!!
Levi receives pilfered tea in shipments monthly, thanks to Erwin.
âAU Smartpass - Erwin & Levi Close Up Interview Part 2 | Part 1 | Taking shelter from the rain reprise: Levi and Peaure | Bessatsu Magazine, Jan.2014 | September 2016 issue of Bessatsu Magazine (chapter 84) | AU Smartpass My First Time Around: Levi Ackerman | The Case of the Corps Tea Party - File No. 09 Levi's Side (3/3) | sugar and milk in tea from the Japanese perspective
Levi, out of his original squad, found Petra cute/sweet in the general sense of the word "kawaii". Like Levi's romantic type however, this was sort of a non-answer to the question (of whether Levi thought she was cute). â2014 interview
After RtS, Levi seems to consider Hange and the 104th his family. âAU Smartpass My First Time Around: Levi Ackerman
He wears a cravat because Isayama based part of his design off Rorschach from the movie 'Watchmen'. He looks "delicate" because of his size and weight, but he's so powerful because [in issues before the reveal of the Ackerman bloodline] of "invisible power" at work. âJanuary 2016 issue of Bessatsu Magazine (chapter 76)
The best way to describe the way he thinks is to compare him to the main character from the movie The Hurt Locker (2008). His character was born from Hiei from the manga 'Yuyu Hakusho', and Rorschach from the movie 'Watchmen'. The former was the basis for his appearance (especially his eyes), and the latter was the basis for his personality. Firstly though, Isayama had an image of a small man being the strongest.
âHajime Isayama x Hikaru Suruga (2014) / Brutus Magazine (2014)
He is something of a protagonist (especially in s3p1). â Animedia, June 2018
His favorite tool (in general...?) is microfiber cloths (for dust I guess. Levi has no need for weapons :3) âJuly 2015 issue of Bessatsu Magazine
He will usually laugh/smile when he sees convenient cleaning goods (i.e., vacuum cleaners? feather dusters? ((cuz he's a shorty?â€ïž)) âBessatsu Magazine, Dec. 2013
He does want to be taller sometimes. He gets eager to clean up after meals rather than cook at all. He can cook, though. âBessatsu Magazine, Aug.2014 | fan Q&A in Oyama, Oita, Mar.2018
Levi mostly couldn't adapt to the changes that came about after the truth was discovered. Only he wears mostly the same uniform, cape, and blades.
Levi already suspected Kenny mightâve been his father.
After RtS, Levi personally retrieved Erwin's remains himself, for whom there was a special memorial service. After Eren (inadvertently) called him a "tiny old man" in season 3, Levi didn't care, but when he thought of it by himself later, he was hurt (unclear exactly why). Levi's father, most likely one of Kuchel's customers, is an insignificant man who's short. That's where Levi's height comes from. His face comes from his mother. At the start of season 4, Levi didn't change much compared to the 104th because he's turning into an "old man" who'd rather stick with his flip phone so to speak. He "doesn't break out into cold sweats". AKA he's always calm under pressure. He considers prostitution to be an ordinary job because of his childhood. Levi's vision is very sharp, way above average. He thought Eren's new look beginning season 4 was unclean/dirty (in more ways than one perhaps). âfan Q&A in Oyama, Oita, Mar.2018
He has slight bouts of insomnia. He never snaps/explodes when he's angry. But he does get angry or grumpy a lot, in general. He doesn't sing. It's more likely he would dance. If he was a fan of Momoiro Clover Z (jpop girl group), his favorite would be Momoka. When/if he drinks, he has a high tolerance, but he can get a little drunk :) One thing he highly hates and fears is mold. He is the one who ordered Armin to dress as Historia during the uprising. His blood type is A. Blood types are much like horoscopes in Japanese culture, and Levi's is as such: kichĆmen, or well-organized; he likes keeping things neat, but can be stubborn and stressed out easily.
Whether he eats enough or has a good diet? He is "a bit lax". Maybe he forgets to eat sometimes, or has a low appetite. When Levi bathes, he goes for a quick shower then soak in hot water, which takes about ten minutes. Like a bird :')) He on any given night gets about 2-3 hours of sleep. He thought Eren was the best at cleaning (in season 3 / uprising arc). Because of his childhood in the Underground, Levi has a preoccupation/obsession with cleaning (specifically to ward off disease). He also doesn't have any pajamas, mostly keeping day clothes on when he goes to sleep - which is in "his" chair. Levi cuts his own hair using clippers. (Something like:)
He's aware Oluo imitated him, and found it annoying. Levi's horoscope (in general) as a Capricorn: Humanityâs Strongest Soldier - Levi. He possesses warmth in the midst of a dispassionate nature, and he is capable of leadership without verbal expression â both of which are special qualities of a Capricorn. Capricorns tend to hold certain levels of authority, even if they must carry out somewhat unreasonable tactics while in such positions. But when such authority is backed up with actual abilities, a Capricorn can gain Leviâs type of confidence and also be put on a pedestal by those around them. However, Capricorns wonât be dependent on others, much less trust them easily. They donât hold high expectations and thus never feel a sense of failure. Leviâs faults include the inability to express himself clearly. Â Even though he wants to encourage his companions, he always speaks in a roundabout way, and without Hanjiâs translation itâs nearly impossible to understand Leviâs intended meaning. Even though he is dependable in most situations, when it comes to love/romance, he expresses himself clumsily/awkwardly. âFRaU Magazine, Aug.2014. | fan Q&A in Oyama, Oita, Mar.2018 | Levi: Close-up Report (Part One) | Translator *the horoscope wasn't written by Isayama, but was published alongside canon information, and it's also not factually wrong, so I'm including it.
The dark circles under Leviâs eyes are to convey the âself-destructionâ he takes on to reach the âstandardâ of Humanityâs Strongest. âInterview on the topic of Levi, May 2015
His 'liege'âas Eren is to Mikasa, and Uri is to Kennyâis Erwin. He is afraid of making deep relationships because of the cruel world he lives in; he can't know when someone he cares for will die or how soon. That 'gap' left in Levi's heart by Kenny's death was filled by his squad (the 104th). If Levi hadn't joined the Survey Corps, he would've been a "very irresponsible person". Risky with his life perhaps? As a kid, Levi used to make himself stronger in order to receive praise from Kenny. When he abandoned him, he wondered what his strength was even for. He was able to find peace with Kenny after his death. In CH72, the reason Levi kicked the shit out of Eren and Jean is because of his argument with Erwin earlier.
He knows he's a slave to his own strength, aka the idea of being a hero. He realizes it when Kenny asked what he's a slave to in s3/ch69. âAnswers Guidebook, Aug.2016
If he ever changed his appearance, the one thing Levi couldn't be able to give up is his undercut :') He would grow out the top and tie it up :3 âOyama homecoming event Q&A in 2014 | 2 | 3
Levi knows how to use a gun, but he "places more trust" in knives. âBessatsu Magazine, 2019
Levi tolerates saunas. But instead of enjoying himself he seems to see it as a test of endurance. (LOL) âBessatsu Magazine, 2020
Levi has newspaper-level handwriting that he practices often. He's very conscious of it and being connected back to the Underground. âAU Smartpass TEXT: Leviâs Signature
Isayama had considered killing Levi around the time of the thunderspear explosion. (As always) Isayama deliberated with his editors whether or not it'd be meaningful if he died, and they decided it wouldn't be. âKawakubo interview, 2021

Akso Hospitalâs parking lot is the emptiest youâve ever seen it.
The Wednesday starlight is partly to blame. Thereâs not much traffic at 8 p.m. on a weekdayâwhich makes your current predicament all the more confusing.Â
Itâd been a standard day at work: emails, meetings, and sneaking out 10 minutes early. But right before youâd stepped into the shower at Zayne's house, your phone had rung.
âYvonne? Hello?âÂ
âUm, hello! Iâm so sorry to call like this, but we really donât know what else to do. Dr. Zayne is reallyâŠshaken? Heâs not hurt, but heâs not responding to any of us, and youâre his first emergency contact. Please come down to Akso as soon as you can!â
Youâd re-dressed in record time.Â
As you step through the sliding doors, their glass panels reflecting the towering streetlights, you note the hallways are as empty as the parking lot. You suppose itâs a good thingâfor a hospital not to be busy, and allâbut the absence of friendly faces makes you quicken your steps.Â
At the end of the hall, you jam the elevator button to his floor, unease prickling at the back of your mind.Â
You sigh in familiarity when the doors open. A confused-looking Yvonne is speaking with the receptionist at the front desk, but she ends the conversation as soon as she spots you.Â
âThank you for coming. I didnât know what to do! I justâthis doesnât happen to him,â she rushes out, shaking her head profusely. âI see it with the others, but never him.âÂ
You touch her elbow in gratitude and offer a smile. âThank you for calling. You did the right thing. Where is he?âÂ
Relieved, she turns toward the end of the hallway, where the edge of a sleek wooden bench protrudes past the wall. âJust down there,â she says, pointing a finger around the corner. âThank god we arenât busy tonight. Itâs been deserted up here since the last surgery.âÂ
The last surgery.Â
âThanks,â you breathe, trying not to wonder what that could mean. âIâll take care of it from here, donât worry. You should go home and get some rest.â With a short wave, you set off down the hallway, passing vibrant anatomic murals and pediatric patient artwork. With every step, your breaths shallow and your pulse quickens. You donât know what youâll find at the end.
Your steps falter when you round the corner.Â
In all the time youâd known him, Zayne had never wavered. He offered tireless strength and supportâdisplayed composure you could only dream of. He was your Atlas, except he shouldered the weight of the world not out of punishment, but out of duty.Â
But in that moment, he was an uprooted anchor, drifting through sloshing seas.Â
His bowed head, shaky hands, and shuddering shoulders. The sheen coating his pale face. If you didnât know any better, youâd think heâd seen a ghost.Â
With an ache in your chest, you approach, but Zayneâs head stays low. Only when your favorite teal-and-white tennis shoes come into view do his glistening eyes snap up.Â
Shock and longing color his face a rosy pink, matching the fading imprint from his surgical mask. Wordlessly, he reaches for you.Â
Unsteady arms wrap around you as you move between his legs, cradling his head into the crook of your elbow. Your chin covers his hair this way, and you slant your cheek to nuzzle into him.Â
âHi,â you whisper, gently stroking his soft strands.Â
âHi.â By the rasp in his voice, itâs the first time heâs spoken in hours.
Your heart clenches. âAre you tired?â
A long exhale fans across your arm. And then, he nods.
Youâre forced to blink back tears of your own when his drop onto your skin.Â
This was uncharted territory. Thousands of thoughts, thousands of actions mill about in your mind, but youâre not sure which to settle on. Right now, you can only tell him what youâd want to hear. âI love you.âÂ
His voice trembles as his arms tighten. âI love you, too.âÂ
Youâre not sure how long you embrace him. When his breathing evens, you lift his chin, smiling gently down at his flushed face. âIs your shift almost over?â
He nods once, solemn.
âLetâs go back to your office. Iâll sit with you.âÂ
You successfully coax him off the bench, guiding him through the halls to his empty office. But after a few minutes of signing paperwork, his gaze is on you. He eyes you forlornly, not saying anythingâand he wouldn't have said anything had you not noticed.
Your lips quirk. âYour work is down there, silly.âÂ
He blinks.Â
Chuckling softly, you rise from his guest chair and hang your purse on its arm. A few steps later, and heâs pulling you toward him and burying his face in your stomach.Â
You let him, but raise his head soon after. Again, he greets you with glassy green eyes.
âIâve never seen you like this before,â you murmur.
âIâve never been like this before.â
Quiet ambient music fills the car ride home.Â
Pulling into his driveway, you switch off the ignition and quickly circle around to take his hand when he steps out.Â
Pretending not to notice the way his cheeks flush, you lead him to the doorway and press his thumb to the sensor, letting out a breath when it lights up green.Â
Once inside, you head straight for his bedroom. In the dim lamplight, you help him out of his disheveled scrubs, smiling softly when he avoids eye contact. After undressing yourself, you tug him toward the master bathroom, where you run the shower on hot.Â
Through the mist, you lather soap over his body, washing his hair of the beads of sweat thatâd gathered before your arrival.Â
You step out once youâre both clean. Zayne follows, reaching for one of your matching towels, but your hand intercepts his halfway. Shaking your head softly, you lift the towel from the rack and wrap it around him, catching the steam that still rises from his skin as you gently pat him dry. Through it all, he allows you, taking his nightclothes from you when you finish. Â
Under normal circumstances, youâd expect a smart remarkâa sideways glance as he subtly reminded you he wasnât a child. But tonight, Zayne is pliant. Deferent. He utters not a word of protest, his trusting hazel eyes trained on you as he waits for you to move him along.
Once you dry yourself off and slip on your nightshirt, you do exactly that: taking his hand and heading back toward his room, gently pushing him down on the bed. His grip tightens when you turn to switch off the lamp, and it takes a soothing grin and touch of his cheek for him to reluctantly let you go.Â
When you slide into bed next to him, his arms encircle you instantly. He tucks his head in your shoulder, and you reach up to stroke his raven hair.
âGood nightâ are your last words tonight.
âI love youâ are his.Â
Itâs late morning when Zayne hurries down the stairs, the pads of his slippers smacking against the floor. When he sees you at the kitchen counter, tapping your phone next to a bowl of cereal, he stops in his tracks. âWhen someoneâs alarm doesnât go off, itâs generally nice to wake them up in its place,â he chides, visibly trying to suppress his irritation.
âGenerally,â you repeat. âButâŠwhat if you didnât go to work today?â you ask, tone gentle so the suggestion doesnât send him into shock.
Itâs only slightly helpful. Suddenly wary, he narrows his eyes in suspicion. âWhat do you mean? My rounds are scheduled as normal, and I have several reports to complete.â
You scratch your neck. âBut what if I already called Yvonne about it, and she and Greyson and your whole team agree you shouldn't go to work today?â you reveal with a sheepish smile.
âYouâŠ.â His eyes fall closed in an intense grimace. âAnd all of them agreed?â
Smile widening, you put your palms up in defense. âYes. But you donât have to spend the day inside! Iâve been looking for things for us to do around town. Think of it like a short vacation!â you cheer, hopping off your chair to wave his arms in excitement.Â
Oversized sleeves billowing in the air, Zayne sighs in defeat. âWhat do you have planned?â
After a quick drive to the parking garage downtown, you walk hand-in-hand past closely packed buildings, coming to a stop outside a recently opened cat café.
Spinning around, you make a ta-da gesture. He snorts.Â
âThe first time we tried to come, you got called in for an emergency surgery. So I thought we could go in today! But only if you want to, of course,â you say quickly.Â
The beginnings of mirth glitter in his gaze. Stepping forward, he holds the door for you like he always doesâas if the way heâd let you lead him last night were but a distant memory. You study him for a moment, noting the quiet plea in his hazel eyes, before brushing a kiss on his cheek and strolling inside.
âWelcome!â the greeter calls as the strong scent of coffee hits your nose. âWeâre glad to have you here! Feel free to take a look around and play with the cats, and order when youâre ready!âÂ
Nodding your thanks, you shift your attention to the catsâ biographies on the wall to your right. âLook, Zayne! This one was rescued from a house fire anâZayne?âÂ
The man whoâd walked in right behind you has disappeared. Panic fills you for just a secondâuntil you spot him at the coffee bar, nodding along as the barista repeats his order. Him and his sweet drinks.Â
Marching up to collect him, you tuck your arm in his and settle at a table on the back wall.Â
Three white kittens, most likely siblings, chase balls of fuzz in the corner. To your left, an adult Persian cat lounges on a tower, its tail lashing with superiority. As you wait for your order, you and Zayne are so engrossed in your surroundings that you fail to notice the besotted Siamese in front of you.Â
Until it leaps and lands right on Zayneâs lap, that is.Â
Mroww, it purrs, affectionately bumping its head into his chin. Startled, he looks to you with wide eyes, hand hovering over the catâs arched back.Â
You almost fall out in laughter. Almost. But instead, you spare him and nod encouragingly, guiding his hand down to pet its sleek coat. âWell, whoâs this?â you chuckle, running your fingers through its short fur.Â
âThat,â your server interjects, setting your drinks down and scratching the catâs ears, âwould be Sâmores. Sheâs the oldest cat here. And very friendly.âÂ
âHello, Sâmores,â Zayne murmurs, and she bumps his chin again.Â
Sâmores doesnât leave youâdoesnât leave him, ratherâfor the next hour. When he stands to throw your cups away, she meows in protest, digging her claws into his shirt. For a moment, he looks as though sheâs going to eat him, but he schools his nerves quickly, this time. âNow, now,â he shushes. âWeâll be back.âÂ
A few shops down from the cafĂ© lies a retro ice cream parlor. The shopkeeperâs bell jingles as you step inside, surveying the pink stools and checkered floors.Â
âHi!â you greet the teenage cashier. âHeâll have three scoops of green tea, and Iâll get one of taro, thanks.â
âCups or cones?â the cashier asks, looking utterly bored with everything but the man behind you.Â
You smile at her in understanding. At least she has taste. âCups, please.âÂ
Hearing rustling behind you, you turn your head and see Zayne reaching into his back pocket. âOh, Iâll get it,â you chirp, digging inside your purse for your wallet.Â
He barely spares you a glance before laying a generous bill on the counter. âCan she get an extra scoop, please?âÂ
Taking small spoonfuls of ice cream, you follow the winding sidewalks outside the parlor in comfortable silence. Before long, a city park comes into view, its verdant grounds preceded by a shimmering pond. The ducksâ multicolored feathers are almost iridescent in the afternoon sun.
Pointing to the wooden feeder ahead, you slow your steps. âYou want to?âÂ
Before you finish the question, Zayne is already pulling coins from his wallet, handing them to you with a soft smile. âOf course.âÂ
After you slide the coins in the machine, unappetizing pellets fall from the dispenser into a complimentary feeding cup. For several minutes, you take turns sprinkling them into the water, watching as the ducks paddle over to you with intrigue. The bobs of their sleek heads create turquoise ripples across the surface, while you rest your own on Zayneâs shoulder.Â
After a while, he takes your empty ice cream cup and heads for the nearest trash can.Â
You smile at him when he returns. âYouâve been so chivalrous today. Itâs like Iâve stepped into a fairytale.âÂ
He cuts his eyes at you before placing a hand on the small of your back, urging you down the twisting park path. âIf you donât feel like that every day, then it seems I need to work harder.âÂ
ââWork harderâ shouldnât be in your vocabulary,â you chide. Then, your voice softens. âYou always make me feel that way. Today, itâs justâŠextra. And I love gentleman Zayneâvery muchâbut heâs just as cute when heâs clingy in his sleep,â you promise, nudging his thigh with your hip.Â
He clears his throat. âHeâll make a note of that.âÂ
After a few more minutes of walking, a fork in your path prompts a moment of indecision. Go left, and youâre sure to have the conversation that he may not be ready for. Straight? An hour more of idle chatter before you head home in the setting sun. And rightâŠwell, to the right is the 4-foot-tall jungle gym, so youâre not too worried about ending up there.Â
Before you can ask which way, Zayne tightens his grip on your waist and turns left, ambling over to the blue and gray swing set.Â
You smile to yourself. Heâs being brave.
As you settle on the sun-warmed swing, the tips of your shoes drag back and forth in the gravel below. Dust kicks up on the pristine leather, turning white to beige, but Zayneâs earnest voice interrupts your grieving.Â
âI had a good day today. Thank you.âÂ
Youâre not swinging very highâonly a couple feet off the groundâbut compared to him, you might as well be on Mount Everest. Chuckling softly, you reach down and join hands, pulling him with you into the air. âWhat was so good about it?â
He delays his answer, his startled eyes widening with each rock back and forth. Only when he gets used to the movements does he elaborate. âIt was peaceful. I did things and went places Iâd never had the chance to before. And I got to spend time with you.âÂ
You hum. âSo it has everything to do with where you were, and nothing to do with where you werenât?â
Heâs silent for a moment. Trees rustle in the quiet, their scarlet leaves dancing on wavering limbs before succumbing to the gentle autumn breeze.Â
âYou donât have to talk about it if you don't want to.â
âItâs alright,â he murmurs. âItâs only fair I tell the one who came to rescue me why she had to.â
âIt might be fair,â you nod, turning to meet his emerald gaze. âBut do you want to?â
His lips twitch. âI want to.â
Digging your heels into the gravel below, you halt his and your momentum, giving him your undivided attention.Â
âA teenage patient received an emergency surgery yesterday. Complications with congenital heart disease,â he begins. âIâd spoken with him a few times prior, and we got along quite well. Aspiring physician, set to graduate at the top of his class. The only thing was, heâd often worry aboutâŠmissed experiences. He didnât attend school dances or athletic events. His older sister gave birth last spring, but he missed it due to a college entrance exam.âÂ
âThat sounds lonely,â you offer, rubbing your thumb across the back of his hand.Â
âYes. He was very lonely,â Zayne agrees. âHe was lonely up until the moment he flatlined on the operating table.â His hand flexes in yours, and you tighten your grip.Â
Blowing out a breath, you ask what you already know the answer to. âAnd heâŠ?â
âDid not respond to resuscitation attempts.â
Your chest hollows at the words. To lose someone so youngâŠto lose anyone at allâŠ. âIâm so sorry, Zayne. If I had knownââ
âOddly enough, his passing wasnât the main cause of what happened yesterday. It only exacerbated the issue at hand.âÂ
Knitting your eyebrows, you wait for him to continue.Â
âYesterday,â he pauses, âwas a lesson learned. Because I realized I also lack those experiences. And I thought, if someone a decade younger than me left his life with so much regret, thenâŠ.â He swallows thickly. âIf I were to die today, Iâd have dedicated my life to this pursuit. But what would I have done outside of that? What stories would be told of me, other than those that took place in a classroom or a hospital?âÂ
A mix of emotions renews the ache in your chest. Pity, fear, surprise, understanding. âYou saw yourself in him.âÂ
Watching a group of boys climb on the jungle gym, he interlaces your fingers. âI did. For a second, it was me on the operating table. Is that selfish of me?â
Humming, you draw swirling patterns in the gravel. âI don't think so. I'd hope no one would,â you muse. âZayne, youâŠare the smartest, most hardworking person I know. But sometimes, I wonder how much that took from you.â At the admission, you expect his eyes to widen, his lips to tug into a frown. But all he does is eye you expectantly, with all the trust in the world. And you know itâs okay to continue.Â
âYou always knew what you wanted to do growing upâyou wanted to help people. You wanted to save lives. You wanted to practice medicine. There was always a goal, right? And you were always sprinting toward it. I mean, you were in algebra when your agemates were still stuck on multiplication tables,â you recall, playfully wiggling his hand in the air. âBut maybe in choosing what you wanted to doâŠyou overlooked who you wanted to be?âÂ
The question floats like the leaves in the wind, and for a moment, you think heâs just like them. Beautiful, vital, but just a little lost. He purses his lips, a contemplative pout forming on his face, but says nothing.Â
âForget about medicine for a second, Zaynie. Donât look at me like thatâI know itâll be hard, but try. Now, what sort of things do you like? What are you passionate about? When you look back on your life, what kind of experiences will you want to have had? A few minutes ago, you asked how others would describe you. But how would you describe yourself? Who is Zayne when heâs not striving for something?âÂ
âIâŠ.â He pauses, voice dwindling into a whisper. Last nightâs expression creeps back onto his face. âIâm not sure.âÂ
âThatâs okay.â Nodding your encouragement, you rise from your swing and stand just in front of his, slotting your legs between his knees and cupping his cheek. Youâre just a bit taller than him like this. âTo me, Zayne is a gentleman who likes sweets and animals and is adorably afraid to swing too high. He helps people, not because heâs a doctor, but because heâs kind and compassionateâeven when he doesnât show it. And heâs still figuring some things out about himself, but thatâs okay because I'm proud of him.â You beam. âYour turn.âÂ
Sometime during your speech, his face had softened. He chuckles lightly before obliging. âTo me, Zayne isâŠa pragmatist. And heâs cautious, not afraid,â he adds, narrowing his eyes when you shrug. âHe can be cold when he doesnât mean to be. Heâs curious, but often too timid to satisfy those curiosities without someone by his side. And he wants to be someoneâŠwho doesnât live with regret for his missed experiences,â he finishes, hazel eyes twinkling up at you. âPerhaps thatâs why I felt so happy today. You give me new experiences, every time weâre together. Which is why, if youâre willing, Iâd like to make up for lost time and make more memories with you. What do you say?âÂ
âI say,â you drawl, flitting your eyes to the structure behind him, âhave you ever been on a carousel?âÂ
His brows furrow as he turns his head, catching your hand in his when it slips off his cheek. âI canât say that I have.âÂ
âThen letâs go!â you giggle, hauling him up with all your strength. âThe sun wonât set for another 30 minutes. And while weâre at it, Iâll race you there!âÂ

How they sleep:
Zayne: On his side, one arm draped over you. Doesn't move much, but his head might end up resting against your chest by 'pure chance'. If he has nightmares, he holds you a little tighter.
Xavier: Doesn't make noise or move at all. Seems dead except for his moving chest. This isn't a problem unless he falls asleep on top of you, crushing you. Immovable object.
Rafayel: Moves around quite a bit, and if he wakes up, he always complains about how 1. You're hogging the blanket and 2. You're not cuddling him. (He literally pushed away the blanket and you himself)
Sylus: While Xavier might crush you by accident, this man does it on purpose. Fully covering your body with his, face neatly tucked against your neck. He snores constantly but softly.
Caleb: Spooning, iron grip version. You're not going anywhere while he's out. Sometimes he talks in his sleep. Your name, mostly. He doesn't tend to snore, but when he does, it's one singular loud as hell snore.

Horror games with them.
CW: None. Pairings: Xavier, Zayne, Rafayel, Sylus, Caleb x Reader (seperate) A/N: Another HC because I hit a writing slump and I simply don't know what happens next in my Sylus fic series. So, uh, yeah. A hiatus for that specifically. But I'm working on other fics.
XAVIER:
I donât think horror games are really his thing. He probably finds places to doze off while you do all the work. Finds a safe spot to AFK and just zones out.
The moment a jumpscare appears, he jolts awake, stares at the screen for a hot minute, and then falls back asleep.
The one that needs to be carried all the time. Not only does he suck, but he DELIBRATELY lazes around and depends on you to complete the game.
If you force him to play anyway, heâd probably mess up every single puzzle and objective there is.
Gets HELPLESSLY lost in mazes.
Somehow really good at boss battles, to his defense.
ZAYNE:
The HARDEST to scare. Period.
Is so nonchalant and unfazed that his indifference becomes scarier than the monsters.
Extremely cautious and unwilling to take unnecessary risks. Would take his time navigating the map and finding clues.
Puzzle master. Solves each puzzle with unnerving precision and focus. Really serious about the whole thing.
Unfortunately, he ends up solving the whole game in just 30 minutes so you end up missing on the actual thrill of horror games.
If he notices your pout, he might actually indulge in the game and let you take the lead.
RAFAYEL:
Oh, playing a horror game with this man is pure comedy.
He begins all smug and confident, with his head raised high and chest puffed out, saying things like, "If you're scared, just hold on to me, cutie." But the moment the game starts, he clings to you like a koala (fishie) with attachment issues.
Screeching at the top of his lungs every 2 seconds. Screams at the slightest noise or flicker of a light. Probably one of those guys who whimpers playing horror games.
If a monster is approaching, heâll die heroically for you. But itâs useless because in the end you both end up dying.
HORRIBLE at puzzles and mazes. He types in the code confidently and then gets offended when itâs wrong.
Has a death rate of 3 per second. Itâs so bad that you either carry him the whole way or give up.
SYLUS:
Smug and unfazed at first. Lets you take the lead to watch as you solve the puzzles and jump occassionally. And he is NOT fun in that regard. If you ask him for help, heâd reply, "I don't know, sweetie. Maybe it's correct, maybe not?" (He, in fact, DOES know).
Master maze navigator. One look at the map and heâs already memorised all the paths, shortcuts, and safehouses. But if youâre leading in the maze, heâd just play along with a smirk as you start walking towards the wrong direction.
Basically, he knows how to do literally EVERYTHING, but chooses not to.
Will flinch a little at jumpscares, but will NEVER admit it. âIt was Mephisto,â heâd claim.
Leads you to the monster on purpose.
Once, he tried chasing the monster and somehow went unnoticed.
In general, he is a menace.
Also, a God at boss fights.
CALEB:
Screams like Rafayel. Sometimes, he even screams solely to make you laugh.
Gets extremely defensive. Following you around everywhere and refusing to split up.
Amazing at timing when to make a run for the exit. Memorises the monsterâs patrol patterns and manages to avoid it entirely. You donât get chased at all when with him.
Really good at critical thinking puzzles but a bit lost in mazes. He sticks to following your lead in them.
LOVES scaring you. Heâd tell you that the monster is right behind you and then burst out laughing as soon as you started running away. Would change his avatar to something scary and then pop out from random corners.
Avid lore enjoyer. If the lore is cliche or badly written, heâd complain and lose interest. Heâd play nonetheless for your sake.
