Title: Snowflakes Amist the Waves
Timeframe: Early Second Track
Tags: Nemo’s a super silly gay rainbow, Kayli’s a sinnoh native and snow confuses her, Nemona’s a total cornball and Kayli loves it, crushing and comfortable friendship
--
“You know, my hermana hates the snow,” Nemona mused idly, coming to a slow stop and holding her hands together for the falling snowflakes to land on even if she couldn’t actually see the unique shapes of each one she still liked looking at them. It was comforting in a way looking at the many, many snowflakes blanketing the city and no doubt the paths between them as well, and knowing that each one of them were different and that was perfectly okay.
That there was nothing wrong with not being that fancy cookie cutter bullshit her father told her, even if Natalia would’ve probably chewed her out if she heard Nemona say that out loud. Even if there would’ve been a twitching attempt at hiding a laugh at her youngest sister, and who tended to cause probably a bit too much chaos during the winter.
The crunching of snow under the other girl’s boots were a lot quieter than Nemona’s, and unlike Nemona who was happy wearing leggings with shorts and higher rise sneakers when it was below freezing, her companion wore more traditional typical winter style clothes.
Not that Nemona blamed her…
“Hmm… It’s a l-lot colder… here I mean,” Nemona heard her hum before she came into her eye line. Blue eyes framed by those dorky rectangular glasses as she tilted her head slightly in a behavior Nemona had picked up on as the quiet girl being curious. So she wasn’t surprised when the blue eyed girl leaned up onto her toes in an attempt to see more of what Nemona was looking at.
Tilting her hands toward her so she could see better, Nemona then laughed and gave her a wry grin, “sounds like you’re not good with the cold amiga~”
Her companion wasn’t impressed, as displayed by the flat side-eyed look, over the rims of her glasses. Much to Nemona’s amusement, as she actually liked it when her friend was relaxed enough to give her looks like that around her glasses.
Maybe eventually Nemona would manage to fully convince her to swap to contacts, since her eyes were striking on their own without trying to blend into the woodwork, but until then she would crack as many corny smirking jokes as possible. Just to see that ‘are you serious?’ look over the edges of her glasses.
“When you’re my size, everything is cold,” came the bland, non-stuttered short response that to someone else might seem clipped and annoyed, but Nemona knew better.
“Then how do you surf in Sinnoh Kayli? Isn’t it mainly mountains?” Nemona asked and splayed her fingers to show her that she was just looking at the snowflakes and didn’t have anything that interesting in her hands.
…yet, but she wasn’t about to actually annoy her instead of just get more of her sarcastic personality out from behind her glasses hiding under her rainbow beanie and thicker long coat.
“Yeah, but if I surf why would I live in the mountains?” Kayli responded slowly with a furrowed look, the silly slight slur of her natural half muttered way of speaking making the Alohan sound a bit janky, showing that while she could speak Alohan and Paldean, she was a Sinnoh native. “Last time I checked ‘mountains’ are still rocks and have not turned into an ocean or something,” she added with a smirk and Nemona grinned toothily.
That’s the spirit, these moments where Kayli was being a total smart-ass back to her were some of Nemona’s favorites.
“You know what I mean,” Nemona snickered and lightly pushed the shorter girl but only enough to make her wander a few steps away and start walking ahead of her. Not that it was easy to knock Kayli off her feet anyway. since her favorite sport involved nearly being killed by ocean waves while on a board made out of foam and fiberglass.
“I surf in Sinnoh because I didn’t live in the Snowpoint Mountains,” Kayli snorted and tucked her arms behind her head in a move that had been initially Nemona’s but had rubbed off on her over time. “I like beaches, Nemona. As in sand, random driftwood, shells, and water, not ice and slippery rocks.”
Okay she walked into this one…
Nemona snickered and took off after her, crunching through the snow in wide lazy strides and lowering her voice. Leaning toward her ear before smirking and struggling to not laugh as she poked fun at her, “I can think of something else you’d like at beaches~ Well…” she couldn’t help it, she laughed, “besides pokemon and attention!”
“What? I like having options,” came the instant knee jerk response, clearly following her train of thought without batting an eyelash and another side eyed look that make Nemona giggle and trott off further ahead, leaving Kayli behind to follow after her. “Hey!” she complained and Nemona heard her half running to catch up with her, “and it’s not like you’re any better either!”
“No idea what you’re talking about~” Nemona giggled with a laugh and used the slight decline in the pathway to slide down it via the flat soles of her sneakers. One of the reasons why she loved winter was simply that she loved sledding and snowballs, even if Draven cracked every joke under the sun about the irony and Penny was about as winter interested as Raiden liked soap and water as a shinx.
“Yeah, yeah, w-whatever rainbow,” Kayli grumbled half under her breath without sounding actually mad. So Nemona could tell that she wasn’t actually mad, just messing with her just like Nemona messed with her whenever she was bored.
She wasn’t exactly a people watching person especially as she understood and read people with the skill of a brick wall, but she did love watching Kayli and learning what mannerisms she could to understand her a little better.
“...wait, which s-sister?” Kayli asked, going in that round about, ‘I’ll eventually remember what I was thinking about but only after I have a whole other conversation first’ thing she did. While Kayli was pretty similar to Tori in that both of them were strategy based, and Kayli played shogi or chess professionally in her region, Kayli’s short term memory was about as short and refined as a small lump of coal. She could remember every proportion and ingredient of her pokemon’s food and pokeblock, but ask her what class she had and she’d give you a blank stare and that why would she remember that. So she was just like Nemona in that aspect, even if Kayli’s attention span was way, way quirkier than hers was.
Nemona was simple, she liked pokemon, pokemon battling, messing with someone’s head, and most of the time, girls. That was it, if it didn’t relate to any of those four things she wouldn’t be interested in it nine times out of ten.
Kayli was a lot more complex.
She liked books but hated studying and preferred to either not study or let her wayward sleep issues let her study while asleep. While also being fully bi and probably one of the most gutter brained people Nemona had met, and she knew herself and Juliana, yet was wildly awkward and couldn’t speak smoothly around others.
Despite you know, being fantastic at flirting and coming up with actually clever oneliners unlike Nemona who would always embrace being called a cornball by her family and friends.
Water was her best friend and she looked like someone practically born underwater, but hated being splashed by puddle water, and yet catch her caught in the rain and she wouldn’t mind at all.
Seren said that Kayli was confusing even to her, while Tori and Juliana both agreed that Kayli had two sides to her at every given moment and had referenced a whole ‘star sign’ thing. Which Kayli had known about, not that Nemona had asked her anything about Kayli’s own star sign, but it was funny reading about it and looking at Kayli and how different but yet authentic all of the time, she was.
Personally Nemona didn’t really care which side ‘was the true version,’ she wasn’t a very picky person. So while she was nosey out of curiosity and her step-sister still half of the time flicked her in the nose and told her to keep her nose out of other people’s business, shy or silently confident and a smartass or not, Nemona wouldn’t mind.
Nor would she change her in any way.
“Oh!” Nemona turned to look at Kayli, who paused mid way through brushing the falling snow from her long blue fringe to look at her and silently ask what she was talking about. Mischeviously tugging the small plant clipping from her pocket, Nemona bit her lip to keep from laughing and flicked it at Kayli.
With it landing in some of the thick royal blue strands of Kayli’s hair just above her thin eyebrows.
“Now you have the perfect excuse amiga,” Nemona snickered and at the confused look from Kayli, she playfully winked at her and struggled to not laugh while actually blowing her a dorky kiss. “Mistletoe, best compañera for someone who loves getting kissed~”
The instant red on Kayli’s face combined with the well deserved middle-finger, made Nemona burst out in laughter and the pokemon champion had to fight for her life to keep from falling backward into the snow covered grass or rocky walkways at the edges of the city as Kayli shoved her.
“You suck…!”
“They wish~” came the half choked laugh from Nemona without missing a beat and this time she definitely deserved the shove that came her way.

Headcannon: Penny & Nemona both like opposite popsicle flavors and also neither eat the full thing of the sharable ones. So naturally... Juliana eats both of them! (Also hoodie is a pokemon hoodie, it's a reference to another pokemon AU)

Champion Sparky
“You mean prez, right?” Seren looked at the redhead in suspicious confusion, one carefully styled eyebrow raising to offer her a look that suggested she wasnt really about to give anything up about the girl she’d asked about.
Which was ironic since from what Jenny could tell, the majority of the school knew various things about the pokemon trainer but despite knowing things and a good amount of the school seemingly annoyed by this girl’s presence… nobody was willing to cough up literally anything about her.
Just that she had a rockruff and a powerful shinx and virtually everyone called her ‘prez’ like president even though she obviously wasn’t part of the student council since the council had given a beginning of the year speech and the girl Jenny was trying to get information about hadn’t been present.
Not that it had bothered anyone, nobody had batted an eyelash at the mentioned student coming into the assembly late and casually standing at the back door. Leaning back against the wall like she were hanging out with some friends instead of dropping in on an assembly in knee length denim shorts and a jersey-like tanktop instead of a uniform.
Admittedly the assembly was way, way too slow and boring for Jenny to really pay attention especially with a third of the seats in the transfer student section still being empty.
Supposedly it was because not all students started at the same time, so there wouldn’t be a full assembly hall for a while and in general wouldn’t be full outside of a monthly short assembly that was given by the council and headmaster. Detailing the upcoming events of that month or so and what the repercussions for poor conduct scores would be that month.
It looked like many students weren’t really paying attention either, probably bored out of their minds like Jenny was if she had to guess.
Not that it was a surprise that such a prestigious school would have such formal style beginnings to the year and everything, but evidently the council were pretty bad at making it engaging to other students-
Jenny nearly jumped a mile when the sound of one of the large double doors in the assembly hall clicked shut. Causing a soft but firm reverberating echo through the quiet assembly hall, only drowned out by the council president’s speech, but it was loud enough for Jenny to immediately glance at the door to see who it was.
Naturally as a transfer student and someone who’d spent most of the last five years ditching or avoiding being enrolled in a school, Jenny had no idea who it actually was, but it was clear enough that they were important at the very least. Seeing how a lot of students straightened up in their chairs despite having spent the last five minutes slouching in them.
Unlike everyone else in the assembly hall, the student who Jenny didn’t know the name of wasn’t wearing a uniform.
She wore grass stained denim shorts that went down to her knees and folded over at the bottom, held in place by gold pokeball pins at the sides, and a magenta red pair of hightops with a complicated self adjusting cinching system that reminded Jenny of the ski boots she’d seen a handful of times in other regions. While they were paired with a deep red jersey-style tank top with gold trim and had a tie casually slung around her neck and over her shoulders and a plaid button down left undone besides two buttons around stomach level as though doing up the buttons of a suit coat. Which was shown by the way the collar and upper parts of the plaid shirt were neatly creased and folded outward before being pinned in place by another pair of the golden pokeball pins to keep it from unfolding and ruining the smooth neat look of the red and black checkered plaid with gold accents and trim scattered throughout the plaid with it’s sleeves folded up to her elbows.
Her long hair was so dark it nearly blended into the shadows, besides the vibrant shocking green fringe at the right side of her face. Thick shockingly green strands with a minor cowlick so they didn’t sit straight down but instead winged out to the side near her ear. Leaving her face visible and not blocking any of it nor the freckles Jenny could barely make out in dim lighting mixing with her darker toned skin, like most of the people from paldea it seemed.
On her arm was some kind of complex polygonal looking rigging system over her forearm that ended at the second knuckle of her fingers as though it was a pair of fingerless gloves, even though her other hand was completely bare, so it didn’t have a matching glove.
Slung over her shoulder and across her body was some kind of messenger bag with the edges of what looked like pamphlets sticking out of it’s unzipped top.
“...we’d like to wrap up the assembly by having students lining up in single file order by the back door where she is,” the student council spoke and Jenny vaguely listened as she stared at the student totally sticking out like a sore thumb amongst the uniform batch of hundreds to thousands of students here in the assembly hall.
Who casually merely lifted an arm at being addressed and waved widely with more enthusiasm Jenny felt most of the year, smiling a slightly lopsided toothy smile and only squinting slightly when one of the lights swiveled to make it easier to see her. Revealing that her hair had blended into the darkness because it was black like the color of pen ink.
“She will give each of you a warm welcome from the student council and provide a bullet point recap pamphlet alongside a copy of the events of the year to be sent home to parents,” the student council continued before the student council president grinned. “What do we say Prez?” they asked and turned the mic toward her.
Who grinned and promptly cupped both hands around her mouth before shouting, “dienvenido al corazon del dragon!”
“And what does that mean in Alohan?”
“Welcome to the heart of the dragon! Namely Dragon Academy!” The playful and evidently extremely hyper student grinned and offered the whole assembly hall a thumbs up with a laugh that echoed rather warmly around the assembly hall, “never gonna find a place with more heart and soul than we do!”
As for who she was, seemed to be something of a secret regardless of Jenny’s many attempts to try and find out more about her. Hence why she was sitting here in the assembly hall again, but this time she at least knew someone, even if Seren was about as friendly as a spiked dragon fruit, and had hoped she’d get out of the supposedly very, very short introductory event that vetter not be as boring as the welcoming one.
However she had doubts with how not particularly friendly Seren was, who Jenny had seen with the mysterious ‘Prez’ multiple times and usually getting on her case for one thing or another. Not that they seemed to be on bad terms judging by how well Seren was all but stonewalling her questions and not giving her a single hint of information.
Which was both one helluva bummer and just annoying as a whole since it wasn’t like Jenny was asking for details that personal, just her name and what she was to the school.
Since she had to be important if she’d interacted with each student and gave them a good hearty smack on the back out of the door of the welcoming assembly, not to mention had been personally addressed by the student council-
The lights dimmed and Jenny internally groaned at it combined with the appearance of the student council president stepping into view on the stage, since the last thing she wanted to deal with was another overly long, boring, and monotone based formal event or speech…
“Good afternoon students,” the council president greeted as they moved to the other side of the stage instead of standing in the center not to mention there was no podium at the moment either which was different than before. “As touched on before, this is the treasure hunt introductory assembly, both a refresher for previous students and a introduction for new students. Personally I never liked the treasure hunt and as such I’m not the best person to talk about it or encourage all of you to participate in Paldea’s ancient tradition, so instead…”
They motioned for someone else to join them on the stage.
“We have a special speaker, someone who’s been on the treasure hunts for most of her ten years here at Paldea’s academies… Paldean Champion Nemona Fernandez!”
The clapping was more authentic than just polite this time as the student council president was joined on the stage by…
The prez girl, the one with green fringe but black hair, a fancy gloved thing over her arm and very bright and almost too hyper to be real deposition.
“Buenos dias!” The girl greeted everyone with a wave as she jogged lightly across the stage toward the center, not holding a mic like the student council, and mischeviously half whispered with a hand near her mouth like she was pretending the mic couldn’t pick it up so nobody would hear her very well, “sorry to disappoint but I’m not that special…”
Resounding barks of laughter through the assembly audience made her grin and intentionally look sheepish even though it was obvious to everyone in the audience that she was laughing too just like the rest of them.
“Whoops,” she giggled, scratching at her cheek with one finger, before everyone roared with laughter as the student council president rolled their eyes and smacked her over the back of the head despite looking like they themselves were barely not laughing through the silly skit of some kind that only looked half acted. Seeing how the girl stumbled a couple steps forward while partway bent over, windmilling her arms to keep from falling over.
Like it hadn’t been really planned so much as the girl was evidently simply a good public speaker and knew how to make teenagers around her age laugh and pay attention.
Not that Jenny was entirely paying attention, since she was more curious in how Seren was lifting her phone at the moment and somehow having positioned her arm well enough across the top of the seat in front of her to hide it. Hiding how she was recording or streaming on her phone for some unknown reason.
By the time Jenny looked back at the stage, the prez girl was straightening up and snickering with a dismissive hand gesture.
“Just kidding, no harm no foul right?” she stated casually and grinned at the assembled students, “probably should get serious though, pretty sure everyone’s as hungry as I am! Cause I dunno about you all, but I’m starving and it’s wild expecting a bunch of hungry annoyed teenagers to pay attention to anything!”
A wildfire of various agreement sounds and speech rippled through the audience alongside remaining laughter and giggles of laughter at her total dorky introduction that definitely brought up the mood if nothing else.
Jenny could admit that she was good, the girl knew exactly how to get their attention and thereby keep it throughout the assembly not to mention would recongize her probably for at least the next however many years she was at the school too.
“Sweet, then gets straight to it shall we?” the girl smiled and cleared her throat behind a hand, idly straightening and tightening the golden tie around her neck tied neatly with a tie clip of the pokemon league symbol and a pokeball beside it.
Jenny hadn’t even noticed that she was wearing a uniform just like the rest of them, though hers had a golden tie unlike their soft sunset yellow and orange ties, her uniform shirt had her name embroidered just above the chest pocket and had a mild striped pattern instead of a flat white color. The thin faint burgundy stripes tying in her standard burgundy uniform shorts with a pokeball belt buckled belt and had a thigh pack at her leg.
The thin gold borders of the well made bag with metal embeds that shaped the league symbol and trailed down the pack to leave thin dangling golden threads clinking softly together as she moved, almost like a soft rain chime.
“As the student council president mentioned,” the girl continued more seriously than before even if her aura was much more warm and friendly than most of the student council’s was muchless the president, “mi llamo Nemona Fernandez also known around school by alias ‘Prez!’ I recommend many of you brush up on your Paldean classes as many of us jumble both Alohan and Paldean together, but just to make it easy…” she grinned with a goofy wink like she was telling them all a secret, “it means my name is Nemona and my nickname is ‘Prez~”
More snickers and laughter from the seated students and the student council president disappeared off stage so Nemona had the stage to herself.
“The treasure hunts are my favorite times of year, after all who doesn’t like picnics, sunshine, camping,” she counted on her fingers, “being outside, exploring, meeting new pokemon, oh and no adults watching you like hawks?”
Cheers from students who’d obviously been one them before and even Seren was smirking, like the dirty blonde preferred the treasure hunts too but wasn’t participating in the cheers.
“cálmate, cálmate,” Nemona giggled with downward motions with her hands to encourage the students to bring the noise down, “don’t want to get me in trouble do we? Cause if so, I can easily shout loud enough to bring all of them down here and scold all of us, but it’d be pretty boring…”
The majority of students fell silent without any more encouragement and Jenny snickered, since it was clear that this girl definitely held more power than the student council did if she could quiet the entire assembly in one go.
“Exactly what I thought,” she hummed casually with a snap and continued on about the treasure hunts, “the treasure hunts are why we start the school just after the holiday season instead of a typical start during early fall. Now,” she continued and held up two fingers, “it’s broken into two halves with midterm testing in between for economics, pokemon welfare, financial understanding, and of course, league testing. Obviously that sounds like a lot of tests and it kinda is, but the reason they do tests on those instead of all of the possible classes is to make sure every student is fit and ready with the supplies they need to carry on the second half of the treasure hunt. Dunno about all of you, but it would suck to start the second half of the treasure hunt only to be out of both LP and cash and stranded in the middle of nowhere, right?”
Nods from all around the audience came as her response.
“That’s why we, the school, do and participate in testing to make sure we’re properly equipped and nobody is stranded! At the same time, it also provides the league with valuable information regarding all of us for things like jobs, possible options outside of school, and a lot of other stuff that was gone over during the welcome ceremony so I’m gonna skip it and instead talk about the league~”
Wait, did that mean she was an actual champion? So she could speak for the league without need for another rep with her?
“The Paldea pokemon league is slightly different than other leagues as it’s not just pokemon battling that you’ll be challenged to in order to proceed onto the next gym, elite four, or champion to gain the title,” Nemona explained casually while she spun a luxury ball on one finger.
Effectively getting the attention of every student in the assembly hall.
“You’ll be tested and pushed to your limits, both mentally and physically in order to take home the champion title and join me up as champion! I’d say Juli too, but everyone knows she’s rejected the title to follow her dreams instead and that’s exactly what a champion should do, chase their dreams even if it means turning down the title!” Nemona hummed while leaning back on her heels, lightly rocking on her heels without dropping the luxury ball from ontop of her finger. “Everyone has the chance to be a champion here and si,” she laughed, “it doesn’t require any of you to beat me either! So rest assured,” she smiled warmly at everyone seated here, “everyone has a fair chance at the title.”
Huh, so Jenny guessed that it must’ve been a big deal for someone to beat her then if she was throwing out that kind of disclaimer, like it was some kind of major reassurance or something.
So she must be a pretty hellish opponent to battle.
“Naturally in order to take top champion you have to beat both myself and La Primera Geeta,” Nemona added with a mischievous grin, leaning to one hip and caught her luxury ball without throwing it upward, “after all, I’m not giving up my champion title without a fight~”
Damn… yeah Jenny could tell just based off of how she held herself that the girl was at the very least a harsh battler if not nearly impossible to beat.
“Paldea has three champion position titles,” she further explained while tilting her arm upward and with an almost inaudible puff of air a second poke ball emerged into the air. Expanding to full size before the goofy girl was using her gloved hand to rotate being which one she was catching or throwing, a little like a poor man’s juggling of sorts. “There’s top champion with only one slot that’s filled by La Primera, international battle champions with two slots total including myself, and then there’s the limitless option of the champion title. Which means you go through the league like normal, but you don’t have to fight me at all and I don’t blame anyone if they don’t want to,” she laughed sheepishly, rubbing at the back of her neck with her free hand, “pretty difficult to beat the youngest champion in the world so no offense is taken!”
…youngest champion in the world?
Now this Jenny had to check, so she turned her shoulder toward the overseeing teachers and typed Nemona’s name into the search bar of her browser to see if she could double check-
The first thing that came up with her name was the title of a news article that said, ‘Seven-Year-Old Child Beats Paldean League In One Day,’ and it had a picture of a girl that had to be really young at the time it was taken. Yet it was unmistakable, the bright green fringe was a dead give away that it was her and she went to this school, where Jenny now was.
If she was seven when she became champion… then how old was she now? Wouldn’t that mean that she’d been champion for longer than any of the champions in their twenties?
“Still! The treasure hunts serve more than just a way to get trainers time to participate in the league without being kept out of school,” Nemona smiled at them all and giggled before she grinned cheekily, “it’s where you have the chance to find yourself and what’s in here!” she used a closed fist to briefly thump her fist against where her heart was and seemed to have done it too hard since she promptly leaned on her knees and wheezed, “oops, too… hard…” and promptly gave a wheezy cough for emphasis and made giggles erupt all over at her hilariously kinda dumb action.
It even made Jenny snicker at it all even if she definitely felt a bit bad for the out of breath champion, who was smiling through her attempts to gather her breath and pleased to have given them all something to laugh about with one another.
--
AN: The age Nemona is named champion here is based on the current information in the Bulbpedia, which says she became champion at 7 and never had a starter.
