me, unprompted: the titans curse is such an underrated book and i am tired of people reducing it to just being the most depressing book of the percy jackson series just because annabeth is gone when its so much more than that. like just think about the prophecy. one shall perish by a parent’s hand? one shall be lost in the land without rain? what the fuck? and then it actually happens and youre like wait i thought this was a fun children’s series but no, there are real stakes at hand and these demigods are really dying and even volunteering for the quest knowing that their parent will kill them. rip zoe and bianca. but also, like, the whole subplot with bessie. percy literally just saved that lil cow because he’s a good person? and bessie ended up following him across the country (also prophecied in “the bane of olympus shows the trail”) which hints at him being *the chosen one* who has the power to sacrifice the beast and gain the power to destroy olympus. but then hes like, wait, we cant kill bessie. that is a terrible loss of innocence! and that line hurts more when you realize that percy’s essentially lost his own innocence because he’s watched two people die in the last 5 days. and then thalia accepts immortality because the book was ultimately a story about figuring out where she stands in this world she’s woken up to, and she’s had nothing for herself in the life she lived before so why not be free of the burden? but then we see percys sense of duty coming in when he says, you know what, i WILL be the one in the prophecy. i cant let nico suffer anymore than he already has, i failed him and thalia put it on me but im going to take it because its what right. and then-

im so sorry i know you've already gotten flack for this but. i literally cant stop thinking about this post and im so genuinely curious how you came to these conclusions.

I understand that annabeth is kind of curmudgeonly and would get on a lot of peoples nerves irl but it's not like. abusive in the way that this post implies? percy gets picked on by other characters in the first book and immediately drenches them, so he obviously isnt actually annoyed or threatened by her. it always seemed very clear to me that he's happy to be pestered by annabeth because he likes her and he trusts her and he knows she knows what shes talking about. Don't get me wrong Rick Riordan writes way too many "banter-as-a-love-language" relationships, but imo percabeth is way less annoying and/or genuinely uncomfortable than like. calleo or nico and will.

"is trying to fuck her way to the top" is the one that I really can't stop thinking about tbh. Do you mean when she has a crush on the chosen one at age TWELVE? or when she continues to have feelings for her best friend as a young teenager? I agree that she's very ambitious and prideful so she's attracted to power but that's like. not what you said. genuinely confused about this. Same goes for "enjoys hurting others" and "casually cruel to people who are dying" is that because she told luke she loved him like a brother? I agree that was a dumb retcon on ricks part but there was nothing casual or cruel about what she actually said.

anyways, I'm totally with you on the "hating other women" bit. All the girls in the series were pit against each other way too much. Some of this comes from Anabeth, a lot of it comes from Piper in HoO, but a lot of it also comes through in Percy's narration (complimenting Anabeth for not caring about her looks, being different from Other Girls, etc). It's like. a big problem, and it's good that we're talking about it. Just a quick scroll through your blog showed me we have pretty different takes on things and I'd LOVE to hear more about how you got there/have some friendly debates if you're ever up for it :)
