In case you have not heard many people from Ukraine are fleeing to Poland by train however Black people are being taken out of the trains and being told that refugee status is for Ukrainians, not Africans. The ones who have spoken out regarding their experience are literally students who are in Ukraine to attend university. Regardless of where they are from or why they are there, Ukraine is a war zone and understandably they want to leave. So far Nigerians who have gone to the embassy in Ukraine have been told not to panic, and have been given zero resources. I have not seen coverage of this yet and will link sources. (x,x) I will also link this video that shares more. What's worse is that Nigerians are walking to the border after being unable to get on trains and being rejected by Poland at the border.

TO UKRAINIAN FRIENDS

If you are looking for an emergency exit from Ukraine, Poland will open EIGHT safety points on the border with Ukraine (you will get warm food, medical help and from there you will be guided to safety) in two of our voivodeships: lubuskie and podkarpackie. It is confirmed by the Polish Secretary of State in the Chancellery of the Prime Minister, Paweł Szefernaker.

I keep seeing deaf characters with hearing aids, and while I have nothing against hearing aids, what annoys me is the assumption that they are necessary to make deafness obvious. It's like the creators are thinking, 'Hmm, how do we make it clear that this character is deaf? Oh, I know, let's put hearing aids on them!'"

Not all of us wear hearing aids for various reasons. Personally, I don't like wearing them because they give me headaches, and I enjoy silence.

Additionally, I highly encourage the use of ASL poses for deaf characters in order to raise awareness! It's incredibly important because a significant percentage, around 75% to 90%, of hearing parents do not know sign language. As a result, deaf children often suffer from language deprivation.

i’m not interested in anything anyone has to say abt terrorists breaking into the capitol if it doesn’t include race. don’t just call them trump supporters, don’t just call them right wingers, don’t just call them fascists and don’t imply the only reason they’re not getting shot dead and gassed like thousands of black protesters is because they’re trump supporters.

they’re white domestic terrorists. their whiteness lets them afford the privilege to strut past police and into the biggest government building in the entire country while holding rifles and machine guns. not their political ideology, their whiteness. say it all or shut the fuck up.

in light of this news, I do wanna say this for anyone who needs it: staying informed/in the loop and doomscrolling are two different things, and it's important for your mental health to know what that difference is for you.

it's essential now more than ever to make sure that we're in the loop with current events and politics. this post is absolutely not advocating for ignoring the news, especially considering factors such as privilege. if you're able to, please do try to stay informed. but there comes a point where information can become too much (particularly when you belong to a marginalized group), causing stress, anxiety, and burnout. being an informed citizen shouldn't come at the expense of your wellbeing.

right now, please ask yourself: am I checking the news to stay up to date, or am I checking it because I'm scared? am I following current events to enhance my understanding, or am I following it because I'm too anxious to tear away?

if you feel rising panic, dread, and anxiety that's spiraling, it's time to step back. being an informed citizen doesn't mean agonizing over things you can't control. when that happens, it's time to reign yourself back in.

consider this post a checkpoint, especially if you're an American, black/a person of color, a marginalized identity (be it religious, gender/sexuality, or disability), or any combination thereof. it's alright to step back and care for yourself.

allow yourself room to breathe. it'll be okay. you'll be able to step back in when you're ready.
