It's my safe haven<3
Fanfic is a free hobby.
It's one of the last few things we can have as a society that's free. You can engage, for free. People give you things (art, stories, etc), for free.
Don't buy into the consummerism just because it's everywhere else.
You don't have to consume everything you interact with. You don't have to use things, just because they exist.
You're allowed (still, for now), to have things that are enjoyable for free.
Do you realise how insane the world is? We don't have many places where we can just be, for free anymore, but ao3 is. Did you notice we don't have ads in ao3? We don't have pop ups? Where ELSE do we not have that?
Where else can you just go and not have to wait for a commercial to be over or for ads to be on the sidelines?
I don't think the younger people understand, but the whole of internet used to be like this. YouTubers would do Youtube for free, just because. You couldn't monetise your internet presence before.
Ao3 is like a little preserved corner of the internet where the old internet used to be, and it's being attacked by people who do not understand that free things are allowed to exist without judgment.
Please don't ruin this for us.
Some of us need it.

Yes! Please someone write about this
I have a prompt idea for any Tony Stark Defenders/Team Iron Man folks (if anyone wants to do it of course): Wanda’s hatred of Tony is stupid because she believes that Tony killed her parents yet neither she nor the rest of the Avengers (with the exception of Rhodey) seems to even give a damn nor realize that Tony had had to save himself by building a miniaturized Arc Reactor from HIS OWN WEAPONS after getting kidnapped by the terrorist group Ten Rings who were sold Stark Industries weapons by Obadiah Stane, who had also orchestrated Tony’s kidnapping, which is how he became Iron Man in the first place! (Basically, Tony explaining all of this to the team could make for an interesting fic prompt.)

As you totally should;)
I'd probably kill him if i get a gun.
I know I’m being extra bitter today but if a man ever talked to or treated me the way Captain America does to Tony, I would probably stab him

Steve and natasha are still stuck in their own delusional judgmentment on tony.
Steve hates him, for no apparent reason, probably cause he's rich and very different than him.
Natasha is still stuck on her very wrong assessment of him in iron man 2.
I'll never forgive them ever for this.
Tony deserves to be so Angry ™
Like??????
He’s housed the Avengers, took the public and political brunt of the Avengers, paid for any expense for the Avengers AND GOT NOTHING IN RETURN NO FUCKING GRATITUDE.
Steve was going to sign the Accords and then got pissed at Tony for confining Wanda to the compound and then Bucky got brainwashed and escaped and directed the plot away from the issue that STEVE WAS GONNA ACTUALLY SIGN THE ACCORDS AND HAD THE FUCKING AUDACITY TO BE LIKE
“You did that when you signed the Accords”
THAT HAPPENED AT THE AIRPORT LIKE HE DIDNT ALMOST HAVE PEN TO FUCKING PAPER. GUYS HONESTLY REWATCH THAT FUCKING SCENE I SWEAR TO GOD.
And Natasha?????
Literally fighting her best friend Clint but deciding to team with Steve last minute because “he wasn’t going to stop”
WHEN LITERALLY YOU HAD HIM CORNERED AND COULDVE STOPPED HIM. HONESTLY NATASHA.
And then she’s pissed at Tony for telling her that T’challa told the United Nations she fucking betrayed them and let Steve go??? And she gets pissed at tony like all
“I’m not the one who needs to watch their back”
LIKE??? HE’S FUCKING. WORRIED ABOUT RHODEY. FUCK OOOOOFFFFF. Also atleast he gave you a heads up. IM SO MAD.
LIKE …..
IM SO SALTY THESE PEOPLE WHO TONY WAS SUPPOSED TO TRUST WERE JUST ASSHOLES.
HE GETS TO BE MAD.
HE BETTER GET TO CALL THEM OUT IN INFINITY WARS I SWEAR TO GOD

You're a lucky man Stark
Tony saying ‘not hot’ in Iron Man 3 and then immediately not following it up with ‘BUT SMOKING HOT’ to his supermodel-looking sports-bra-wearing abs-sporting vixen of a girlfriend is nothing short of writing malpractice.

I would say “I’d die for Tony Stark” but if I did that he would carry the guilt like a two ton weight so instead I’m deciding to live for Tony Stark. I think he’d like it better that way.
#for real#tony stark has a heart#tony stark#my baby#my shayla#his guilt complex is so huge#there's nothing more heartbreaking than seeing a man who deserves the very best always getting treated the worse

This is a long ass rant about Iron Man 2008. I was compelled to watch this movie out of nowhere (random youtube clips).
This movie should not inspire as many thoughts in me as it does but you know how it is with media that is flawed.
Iron Man 2008 is actually quite nice, all the way to the credits. Its only after the credits that I am gently reminded by Nick Fury that this little self contained story about an irresponsible playboy millionaire having to face the consequences of his actions and trying to reclaim his inventions and legacy will turn into a mega franchise in the long run.
I was really surprised to see it was nearly 2 hours long. A good portion of this movie is set up. A REALLY significant portion. The true meat of it all is the first half. It doesnt clearly follow the usual action movie beats. It does hit them but is not as concerned about doing it as recent action flops. (Was this how all old marvel movies were like???) We dont even get to the heroic beating up bad guys part until very later.
The thing that got me about it was The Dilemma™ and revelations. Tony Stark starts out as an uncaring asshole confident in the lies he tells about his weapons being necessary to keep the powers of the world balanced. In Stane's words (the bad guy of the movie) without them, the world will fall into chaos, supposedly.
Then a bunch of terrorists in afganistan kidnap him (this is how the movie opens actually, directly in afganistan. I cannot take american movies that open in the middle east seriously. The nerve), he gets blown up by his own missile. Sees the destruction and the deaths he caused. Even Yinsen, the man who helps him escape, dies helping him, telling him that he didnt have a family to return to anyway, likely because those same weapons killed them.
This is important. Yinsen isnt just a random victim to radicalize the protagonist and immediatly die. Well, he is. But Tony Stark doesnt have a family either. And that is further connection to tie him to his sins.
Stark escapes using his makeshift battle suit which will later become the iron man suit, returns home and the first thing he does (after eating a cheeseburger) is shutting down the production of all weapons his company produces.
This is one of the things that really took me by surprise. Because make no mistake, this movie is still very pro american military in execution. We only really see the bad things Stark's weapons do in the hands of afgan terrorists. A huge portion of the plot thread this movie follows is Stark's weapons being sold under the table to the terrorists. The movie doesnt show us what the americans do with those weapons.
For a movie that is very anti-weaponry, it obviously should have. But this bit really gripped me here. Stark shuts down ALL weapon production. He doesnt say he is gonna stop the weapons from "falling into the wrong hands". He says he is gonna shut it all down. Not gonna sell to the american military either. This is not just subtext. He visits his soldier buddy to say he wont be giving them anything anymore. So actually, the meat of the message, the real truth of it all is there in this movie. Even though Iron Man the Movie wasnt truly brave enough to say it loud and clear, distracting from the truth of it all by focusing on afgan terrorists only, it still knows what is what.
My expectations for the weapons plot of this movie were truly so low that I ended up giving it a chance to impress me with the bare minimum and this is really my fault. But actually it isnt, because while the movie is too shy about delivering its real message, there are some other really clever lines that keep it from falling into the subtext category.
Like this right here. This is the bad guy saying this line, so you are obviously supposed to understand that he is wrong. This is constrasting Stark's earlier line about peace.
There is usually a "having power in the right hands" argument in defense of weapons. But there is no "right hands" or "wrong hands" when it comes to power or weapons. No one is really supposed to have them. Anyone who does and claims they are using it the right way are only hypocrites like the big bad here. So no. No matter how much this movie shoots itself in the foot by flaunting america's latest fighter jets in our faces and posing terrorists as the only problem there could be about war technology, this right here manages to slip through all the self censoring.
So in the end, it is not all bad. Stark very clearly ends up being a white saviour stereotype and spills a bunch of armed terrorists' blood like it solves anything, but somewhere in the writers room someone somehow gets it.
Anyway, this was the "doing the right thing" part of Stark's character. There is also the personal part of this change of heart that I wanna talk about. Namely how the way Stark was so damn furious about his own inventions being used to kill. His fury wasnt just because of heroic righteousness.
Okay I am actually gonna get into the meta narrative subtext part of things now so take it with a grain of salt.
It was also Stark realizing he had been played like a fool, used like a tool all his life by the man he was more or less raised by since 17 years old and trusted. (This movie was oppenheimer before oppenheimer (I havent watched oppenheimer))
Stane was his father's friend and work partner. Stane was then Tony's work partner when he was 17 and his parents died in a car crash. Stane was likely the one who taught him alongside his father a majority of what he believed about the purposes of his weapon company. Stane paid the terrorists to kidnap and kill him because he wanted the company all to himself. Tony was simply the golden goose he profited from all those years with his inventions. And even though it doesnt make sense to kill the golden goose, this is greed, and you know how that story goes.
(there is some room to theorize about whether Tony's parents were also used by Stane and discarded later via car crash, but the details are too vague to tell)
Stane is a surprisingly effective villain because he flips everything Tony had believed in his life upside down. Even his father was complacent, this is their legacy and he has no say in any of it. He doesnt get to decide what his inventions will be used for. So perhaps, making a suit is a sort of rebellion because it is the first thing he makes outside of the influence of everything Stane and his father taught him. Because really, there wasnt a lot of reason for him to upgrade the suit was there? It is more or less a weapon. Tony post-kidnapping shouldnt want to work on it anymore if not for a personal reason.
Anyway, all this was hard to pull from this movie because there were only bits and pieces for me to go off of but thats probably why I got so fixated on it. When there is so little, imagination runs wild to fill in the blanks.
Then there is also Pepper. She is also here and she mostly acts cute. But my favourite bit was when Stark confronted her about having worked for him even when he was selling weapons that killed millions, because I thought the movie wouldnt adress that. When a character has a change of heart and realizes they were fucking evil, they gotta question the involvement of their buddies who had no problem with that dont they? And well, Pepper doesnt have much of an excuse other than that she loves him but I forgive her since she is pretty and all end of argument.
It is refreshing how low scale and personal this movie was, I wish it stayed like that. But Nick Fury had other plans...
