Recently, someone asked me, “Is it worthwhile trying to teach mentally challenged persons a vocational skill?” It set me thinking. Firstly, they are human beings like us and have a right to a happy and dignified life. They do have a sense of self-dignity.

When taught a skill and made to do it repeatedly, Mentally Challenged persons do learn and can be productive. When they do so, they feel so good about themselves. You can see it in their body language. Secondly, they have feelings and emotions like any of us. When they learn a skill and participate in an activity, their self-confidence goes up dramatically. This is reflected in their changed behaviour, changed for the better.

Lockdown Support for Akash(Mentally Challenged)- A Low Income Family

Hello Friends, Navkshitij, is a registered 16-year-old NGO committed to the well-being of mentally challenged persons. It runs a residential facility offering lifetime care for adult special friends. There are 62 special friends at our two residential units. Navkshitij has launched Lockdown Support for Akash Agarwal, a special friend from a low income family. Akash Agarwal is mentally challenged and got admission at Navkshitij, where we charge a minimum fee (60% of the total amount spent on a person per month) to cover the basic cost of food, lodging and other recurring expenses. Akash's father Mr Anil Agarwal runs a flour mill in Pune and earns a decent income while his mother is a housewife. The current crisis - the pandemic and the lockdown - has led to the shutting down of the flour mill, leaving the family bereft of any income for two months. There is no money to pay the fees for Akash.  

In this scenario, the family is torn between wanting Akash to continue at Navshitij and being unable to do so due the lack of any income in the family. It also needs to be noted that even after the lockdown is lifted, it could take at least four months before some income could begin to trickle for the Agarwals. For, gripped by the fear of Covid-19, most people seem to prefer packaged flour and are slowly getting used to it. The family is helpless now and needs your support. Please donate generously so that their son Akash is assured of a supportive residential care without any break. Any break in routine is a huge challenge for a mentally challenged person. Besides, he cannot get the same support and activities at home as does at Navkshitij. Mentally challenged persons cannot be rehabilitated back to home. Let us support this family in need and prove that humanity continues to exist even in the most challenging times.
