There’s something about the focus on Gabe (in both productions) in the fandom to the point it overshadows everyone else + the focus on Gabe in the story overshadowing everyone in Diana’s life. I love Gabe too but you have to admit it’s ironic 😭

why is the "is gabe good or evil?" debate meaningless
in the next to normal fandom, i’ve seen multiple times people trying to argue whether gabe is “just” a child who seeks attention and no harm in a douche-y way, a terrifying ghost that controls the entire family, an angel (???), a complete asshole who shouldn’t be excused in any way — which i have probably been guilty of — or any sort of interpretation that draws him as a person/being who is evil or good — or a mix of the two. but the thing is, he is none of them. in fact, gabe’s character shouldn’t be interpreted as anything close to a person/being with his own agenda.
while gabe’s song I’m Alive can lead to the misinterpretation that he is a person/ghost/whatever trying to prove his existence, his essence goes beyong life and death. he is a concept, an idea, something that is not limited by human biology, and thus he cannot die as he is some sort of ideal infinite. the lyrics of the song even shows that gabe defines himself with abstract concepts: “fear”, “nightmare”, “mystery”, “memory”, “desire” etc and nowhere except with the word “stranger" — which has an abstract connotation — does he try to prove his humanity. and this lead to my point: he has no agenda, he is beyong good and evil as he does not live.
even when we see a more fleshed and human-ish gabe on stage, for exemple his famous “Hi, Dad”, it is arguable that gabe has any conscience of his own. throughout all the show, gabe merely acts on his own, he is always responding to someone’s feeling and struggle, reflecting their emotions, he does not once act for himself like dan, diana or natalie do. when gabe answers “Hi, Dad” to dan, is it him finely finding relief that his father is aknowledging him, or is it him reflecting dan’s aknowledgment of his grief? when gabe avoids dan during the show, is it because his feelings are hurt or does he reflect dan ignoring his grief and the memory of his dead son? when gabe leads diana to commit suicide, or when he gives natalie drugs, is he doing it because he is evil or is he just answering their needs to find a way out?
of course, gabe’s character is left to a lot of interpretation, but reducing him to either a pure evil or an angel, or even just a person, takes a lot from the character’s dynamic. when talking about how he do cause harm, the attention shouldn’t be focused on “were his "intentions” good or not?“ as he does not have any, but rather on what effects it had on the family and how his behavior changes through the evolution of the goodman and the different characters he is interacting with.
again, gabe is a very fluid character, and his actions change whether he acts like a reflection of one character’s feeling or his environment, or as a personification of mental illness or grief, etc, he is not a subject of his own, he has no real essence and thus cannot be defined by adjectives that implies he has an agenda such as "good” and “evil”
