Intern Diary #1
Office intern Jess here! I’ll be taking over the blog to tell you a little about a recent short film I was on. I’ve been an intern at Sweet Rickey since January 2019 and currently attend Emerson College as a senior Visual and Media Arts Major with a minor in photography.
On May 18th (my 21st birthday!), I began the long drive up to Acadia National Park to meet the cast and crew of Sanctuary Lost, an Emerson BFA (Senior Thesis) led by Director Bram Lowenstein and Cinematographer Carl Stewart. The film follows a lone huntress who’s home is destroyed and must rediscover her humanity.

The crew included about 20 hardworking Emerson students staying at various nearby houses over a 6 day shoot. As a Behind-the-Scenes photographer, I was walking onto a project that, frankly, I knew little about. This was new for me, as I typically hold a producer role. I had met Carl in a photography class at Emerson when he asked me to tag along on the trip, but barely knew anyone else on the crew. I was just happy to be there. I walked into a house full of strangers that night, and left with a home full of friends later that week.

Over the next 4 days, we visited Cadillac Mountain (home of the first sunrise in the United States), Gorham Mountain Trail, Jordan Pond, Sand Beach, and several other woodland areas around the park. It rained almost every day, making the steep, rocky trails slick and flooded with water. Still, we persisted, trekking through the forest with pelican cases and C-stands in tow.

The conditions were tough, and the call times were early. Overall, the weather was unfavorable, but the film gods managed to clear the skies as soon as we began shooting. Nature was our best friend and our worst enemy. Luckily, I was sporting my trusty Fujifilm X-T2 (63 points of weather sealing), which allowed me to shoot through the drizzling clouds and frigid weather. Paired with my military grade SD cards and water resistant Wandrd backpack, I was unstoppable. I was also able to shoot 3 rolls of film on my Nikon Fm2, my favorite travel camera. Eventually, the sun came shining through on the last day of shooting. Overall, the project was a wonderful experience and left me with a greater appreciation for nature, and some awesome new friends! Below is a picture of me on Sand Beach with my two favorite cameras.
You can find out more about the project on our Indiegogo, Facebook, and Instagram!

“Certain stereotypes are being broken: that only people with a certain profile can be actresses or be on the cover of magazines. Other faces of Mexico are now being recognised. It is something that makes me so happy and proud of my roots.”
