The Cop and The Con
Max Mitchell had been Cole Ellis' girlfriend for less than 24 hours and now she was going to die.
tw/cw: drugging, kidnapping
Max and Ellis had been working on a case surrounding multiple missing young women in a small town and it's safe to say it was stressing them both out. For one, they couldn't agree on where to start the investigation. It was like when they first started working together, they couldn't agree on anything. Secondly, it was one of their last cases together before Max's dad got out of jail meaning the end of their partnership. This was the real reason they kept butting heads, they just couldn't admit it. It was their third day working on the case and it felt like they were getting nowhere. None of the missing women's family members or friends seemed to know anything and they had begun to run out of leads.
"Okay, what was the connection between the women again?" Max said, rubbing the middle of her forehead in frustration. "We've already been over this, Max. There is no connection." Ellis said, grumpier than usual. Simmons and Yates eyed each other from their desks but Max and Ellis were too caught up in their spat to notice.
Max rolled her eyes. She couldn't understand why he was acting this way--extremely difficult, short fuse. It was like all this time working together and getting to know each other never happened. He was acting just like he did when they first met and she had no idea where she went wrong. They were slowly rebuilding their relationship after the egg incident and she thought he was starting to trust her again. She was hoping he was feeling the same way she had since that kiss. Maybe not. "Ellis, what is your problem? You've been acting moodier than usual the past few days."
Ellis rolled his eyes this time. "I'm just trying to work on this case. Some of us still have a job to do after George gets out of prison."
Max glared at him and got up from her seat, "You know what? Maybe we need to cool off and investigate by ourselves." She grabbed her files and her new, cute blazer and walked out of the main lobby of the station. Yates went to say something but Simmons stopped her.
"Ellis, everything okay with you and the Mrs?" Ellis rolled his eyes again, something his coworkers were growing very tired of. "Don't call her that and we're fine. Just need to figure out this damn case and we can go our separate ways." This time Yates had to say something. "Okay, Ellis. I'm going to be very gentle when I say this.. quit being an idiot. Everyone in this station can tell how you feel about Max. Even the commissioner. Stop pushing her away and figure it out, relationship and case wise."
Simmons nodded his head approvingly, "Good speech, partner. I second that."
"Agreed! Get back to work, Ellis!" Chief Li yelled from his office. Ellis knew they were right and he got up, heading for Max's favorite spot in one of the interrogation rooms.
"Hey." Ellis said when he found her, just where he knew she'd be. "Hey." She replied and the tension in the room was thicker than any suspect questioning they'd ever done.
"I have something to tell you." They both blurted out at the same time. "You first." Max said. Ellis took a deep breath. Then another. "Okay. I'm sorry I've been such a dick lately. Since that kiss... I haven't been able to stop thinking about it. And about you. And how much I need you and want you. As more than a work partner.. as a life partner. When I first met you I thought you were crazy and now I know it's true but I also know there's no one I'd rather solve cases with, eat dinner with, or listen to their incessant ramblings. I want to be with you, Max. If you'll have me."
For the first time, Max was too stunned to speak. Never had she thought she could want to settle down and have a quiet life with a partner. And with a cop? But here she is. Ellis looked at her nervously.
"Have I finally rendered you speechless?" He asked, trying to lighten the mood. She stared at him for a couple more seconds before cupping his face in her hands, giving him an asking look. He responded by crashing their lips together. They were so caught up in finally giving in to what they've wanted for so long that they didn't hear the door open. Yates cleared her throat. "Super happy for you guys but I kinda need to question my suspect in here." She said holding a skinny, handcuffed guy by the arm. They get up, leaving the room for Yates to use. "Wait, what was it you needed to tell me?" Ellis asked, finally regaining his focus. Max smirked and Ellis knew how far in he really was. "I know who the kidnapper is."
12 hours later
Max Mitchell was Cole Ellis' girlfriend--at least for the last 12 hours she was. Last night, Max and Ellis had finally gotten it together and gotten together. After an amazing first night on the boat-- Ricky was on Marc babysitting duty for the night--They had to get back to the case. Max had looked through the files and discovered a connection between the women and was going undercover to test her theory.
Ellis, Simmons, and Ricky were parked across the street in an unmarked van and were listening in to everything going on. Max was undercover as Ally Baker. A young woman looking for someone to paint her new house. James Greene was the local handyman and he had recently worked on the houses of all the missing women in town.
"Well hello there! My name's Ally, I'm new in town I was wonderin' if I could get your services paintin' the rooms in my new home?" Max said, in Ally's thick southern accent. The man agreed and asked her what color she was thinking about. "Um, I'm not too sure. I'm thinkin' somethin' light? Would you mind gettin' your lightest colors out? Oh and can I use your restroom?" James heaved a sigh and pointed to the restroom, "I need to head to the back to get the lighter colors." He said, walking into a room behind the counter.
Max took this as her cue to snoop around, looking for anything that could possibly connect him to the missing women. She wasn't paying attention until she realized she hadn't heard him come back. "Um, mister?" She started to say, turning around but before she could react James was behind her sticking a syringe in her neck that immediately subdued her. The man had seen Max and Ellis investigating and he recognized her despite her disguise. He easily found her earpiece.
"Max? Are you there?" Ellis sounded desperate over the line. James smiled sickly, "Thanks for adding to my collection." Then he smashed the earpiece and picked up Max's limp body, carrying her through the backdoor and to his van before Ellis and Simmons could catch him.
Ellis ran to the hardware store, hoping to catch him before he hurt Max but he was too late. Him and Simmons searched the entire store and neither Max or the handyman were anywhere to be found. Ellis had a pained and panicked look on his face. Simmons could see it. "Hey, we're gonna find her, alright? She's gonna be okay." "How?" Ellis was so stressed he couldn't think rationally. Where he would usually be able to come up with a plan, he came up empty. "Your pal Ricky. If anyone can find her, it's him." Ellis nodded and they headed back to the van.
"Ricky, tell me you still have a tracker on Max?" Ricky looked stressed but somehow still in control. "You bet your stoic ass I do. He's heading down Lincoln Park, towards Maverick Ave."
Ellis immediately sped off, using a shortcut he had found on the investigation to get closer. "You're close to hi-" Ricky stopped. Ellis frantically turned his head, "Ricky, what?! What is it?!" Ricky gulped, "Her location dropped off. Either he took some shortcut where the tracker couldn't pick up or he found the tracker. It's okay, I'm working on it."
With whatever godly hacking skills Ricky possessed, he was able to find an old storage locker that he was sure the handyman was headed for. They went and Ellis silently hoped he wouldn't lose another person he cared about.
Max groggily woke up, her arms were held above her head and when she tried to move them she realized they were chained to a wall. She unsuccessfully tried to pull on the chains. "It's not gonna work, babe" Max jumped and realized that she wasn't alone. In whatever room she was in there were other women chained up as well. She recognized them. They were the missing girls. Well, at least her theory was correct. She cleared her throat,"Y- you're the missing girls from the town. Me- me and my partner, Ellis... we were trying to find you." One of the girls laughed, humorlessly. "You found us. Now you're gonna die with the rest of us." Max tried not to let the fear show on her face or be heard in her voice.
"No one's dying, ok? My partner's on his way." Max looked down, she hoped they believed it. She wasn't too sure she did. Before she could wallow in her own self pity or try to find a way out, a thick cloud of gas started coming through the room. Max looked around frantically, "What's happening?" Another girl answered her, she didn't look more than 20, "It's some sort of chloroform gas. We get put out and when we wake up someone's gone. I'm thinking it's you, cop girl. Don't worry, sometimes they come back." Oh crap. Max Mitchell had been Cole Ellis' girlfriend for less than 24 hours and now she was going to die.
Ellis, Simmons, and Ricky finally arrived at the storage unit almost 30 minutes later with multiple cars of back up. Ellis was in charge, he entered the unit with a bulletproof vest and his gun up. He had 4 officers behind him, ready if the handyman came out armed.
Suddenly, multiple shots rang out. The cops ducked while also trying to shoot back at the man. Ellis was laser-focused on catching the man who had kidnapped and possibly killed multiple women, including Max. He let out two shots that got the handyman in his shoulder and chest. He was done. When the cops made sure everything was clear and got the suspect onto a gurney, Ellis went searching for the girls and Max. He went through the unit opening the doors. Most of them were empty. He stopped for a second and heard yelling, definitely coming from upstairs. He ran upstairs and found the room where the missing girls were, chained, drugged, and traumatized but mostly okay. "Paramedics are coming, alright? You're safe." One of the girls looked up at him, "Are you cop girl's partner? Ellis?" Ellis' head snapped towards her, "Yes! Where is she? Where's max?"
He ran through the unit. It felt like time was slowed down as he opened doors looking for Max when he finally found her. "Max!" She was slumped over in a chair. He ran towards her, picking her up in his arms and cradling her head. "You're okay, Max." He ran down the stairs, getting her to the paramedics in what felt like record time. He cradled her face, lightly tapping, trying to wake her up. "Max, Please!" Max stirred then sharply flinched away, "No! Don't touch me!"
"Max, Max. It's me, it's Ellis." He held her face as she tried to calm her rapid breathing. "You found me, I knew you'd find me. And the girls?"
Ellis looked at her, feeling all the love in the world, thankful he could finally be with her. "Everything's okay, everyone's okay. Because of you, because you were right." Max smiled up at him, holding his wrist where his hands still held her cheeks and leaned up where their lips met. Max Mitchell had been Cole Ellis' girlfriend for less than 24 hours and she knew they were gonna last.

If unfamiliar with the term it's when you turn the age of your birth date. For example I was born on the 24th so my Golden birthday happened when I turned 24.

All right, fine. I get it. I sprang this on you. It was a lot to take in. And you feel like you don't have much experience with gay people. Even though Uncle Roberto hasn't been single for 60 years for no reason. It's still an adjustment. That said... you should've adjusted by now. I mean, you're supposed to love me no matter what. That's what a parent does.
