zoro has such a flair for drama currently at the scene in whiskey peak where he waited on the top of a roof in the dark for the perfect moment to interrupt the baroque agents and give a whole ass menacing speech about how he knows who they are, what their plans are, their secrets, and that he’s going to kill them before slipping away into the shadows like a slasher villain n reappearing in the middle of them to their absolute horror while pretending to look for himself on the roof. and just spending the whole ordeal cracking blasé jokes while beating them effortlessly up like a right bastard (and yelling at his cursed sword)

This is one of my favorite panels. I love how Oda used the shape of the panel to suggest that we were viewing this scene from inside a cave or tunnel. Because he uses black gutters during flashbacks, he could really make the most of stark contrast to convey the scene. Oda’s refusal to use screentones and instead rely on line shading has given us some really fantastic art. I think it’s also done a lot to create a consistent look for the series despite all the ways Oda’s style has evolved over the years.

Though I’m not sure if it was a direct inspiration for Oda’s style, Osamu Tezuka’s backgrounds are famously richly detailed and also don’t use tones. The contrast between the lifelike backgrounds with their fine linework and the highly simplified human figures create an incredible impact. Jeff Smith, probably most well known for Bone, similarly uses black and white art to great effect. It’s interesting to compare the three artists side by side and see how differently they use similar techniques.
