something just dawned on me—the way sylus keeps insisting mc join onichynus, i think it has something to do with perhaps the hunter’s association secretly being corrupt.

because he says it jokingly, but i think the game’s hinting at sylus’s low-key desperation to get her away from the HA. it doesn’t fall in line with his behaviour to pester her just to have her close. he respects her and her values and her work too much for that. mc has a genuine passion for protecting civilians and keeping people safe. so, i don’t think sylus would want to intrude on that bc she loves her job.

it has to be because he’s trying to protect her but doesn’t want to outright say why yet because she might not listen to him or she might start investigating something she isn’t ready for and get herself in hot water (i reckon her team has no clue. like it’s hush hush with the higher-ups. they’re probably working with EVER or at least aware of mc’s status as an experiment subject)

i still firmly believe sylus is a fake mafia boss and is really just a vigilante doing genuine work to help people and expose EVER so no more innocent people get harmed. it would fall in line with his self-sacrificial attitude to just accept being “the bad guy” if it means he can easily slip through the cracks and help. like he loves people too much to not, yk?

his whole introduction was also “hey look at this bad guy” but then we kept being told there’s more to him than he lets on and that he’s actually better than the self-proclaimed good guys. and i don’t think they mean sylus is secretly soft and romantic. why would the mechanic even imply that? i think they mean sylus is actually not the villain at all. why else would he know average people everywhere he went and have fond relationships with them despite his guarded exterior? he genuinely enjoys helping people. and his protocore research is probably also just that—he’s finding a way to stop whatever EVER is doing.

it’s like… when the so-called justice system is corrupt, you have to make friends with the criminals to actually bring justice. because the “good guys” are far worse and often in cahoots with these underground bosses. it falls in line with his myth too because his myth was all about corrupt judiciaries. even in his limited card in the desert, i forgot the name—he talks about the people overthrowing corrupt kings or smth. and his anecdote is ALSO about him fighting tyrannical overlords.

sorry this got so long i think about sylus’s lore a lot because he’s so intriguing and i’m convinced he’s basically the LADS batman

I don't really have a lot to add to this since you put everything so perfectly in your message but I think you're right on the money, and have been having similar thoughts myself. For all the reasons you state, and because it'd simply make for a good story. Forcing MC to confront and reevaluate major beliefs and worldviews. It'd definitely be devastating for her since she is so proud of her job as a Hunter ;-; but it'd lead to some good character growth I'm sure.

And yeah, Sylus is absolutely not a villain. Never has been. That's just a role Booktok likes to push onto him. Similar to how they want him to be a toxic dom who uses sex for his own means and bs like that 🫠💀 If he's anything at all he's an antihero, and morally complex. For sure nowhere near the monster Philos and present timeline society portray him as.

He definitely has an agenda that we don't know about yet. Why else the specific beef with EVER? Why the obsession with Protocores? Why the continued insistence on MC joining him? There is for sure something bigger going on here and I can't wait to find out just what that is!
