Green Investing: How to Align Your Portfolio with Your Values

In a world facing urgent environmental challenges, more investors are asking an important question: "Can my money make a difference?" The answer is yes—through green investing.
Green investing (also known as sustainable, socially responsible, or ESG investing) focuses on putting your money into companies and funds that prioritize environmental sustainability. It’s a way to seek financial returns while supporting clean energy, reducing carbon footprints, and promoting corporate responsibility.
What Is Green Investing?
At its core, green investing is about aligning your investment choices with your environmental values. It involves directing capital toward businesses and projects that support:
Renewable energy (solar, wind, hydro)
Energy efficiency
Sustainable agriculture
Pollution control and waste reduction
Conservation of natural resources
It also avoids sectors like fossil fuels, deforestation, or companies with poor environmental practices.
Why Go Green with Your Investments?
Make a Positive Impact Your money becomes a tool for change—supporting companies working toward a more sustainable future.
Mitigate Risk Companies that ignore environmental risks may face regulatory fines, reputational damage, or long-term viability issues.
Follow the Market Shift Institutional investors and governments are increasingly favoring green initiatives. This shift can lead to strong long-term performance for sustainable investments.
Feel-Good Factor Investing in alignment with your values provides not just financial returns but emotional satisfaction.
How to Align Your Portfolio
1. Start with ESG Funds
Look for mutual funds or ETFs (exchange-traded funds) with ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) criteria. These are professionally managed with sustainability in mind.
Examples: iShares Global Clean Energy ETF (ICLN), Vanguard ESG U.S. Stock ETF (ESGV)
2. Use Screening Tools
Platforms like Morningstar, Sustainalytics, and MSCI ESG Ratings help you assess a company’s environmental performance.
3. Divest from Fossil Fuels
Consider removing or reducing holdings in oil, gas, and coal industries. Many green investors opt to fully divest from fossil fuels.
4. Invest in Green Bonds
These are fixed-income securities issued to fund environmental projects. They're often backed by governments or reputable organizations.
5. Support Green Startups
If you’re an accredited investor, you might explore impact investing in early-stage green tech companies or sustainable startups.
A Word on Returns
Green investing is no longer a niche strategy. Numerous studies suggest that ESG portfolios can perform as well as, or even better than, traditional investments—especially over the long term. Sustainable companies are often more forward-thinking and resilient.
Tips to Get Started
Define your values. What causes matter most—climate change, clean water, biodiversity?
Do your homework. Research fund performance, transparency, and management.
Speak with a financial advisor. Many advisors now specialize in ESG investing.
Stay engaged. Voting on shareholder resolutions and engaging with companies can amplify your impact.
Final Thoughts
Green investing isn’t just a trendit’s a movement. By aligning your financial choices with your environmental values, you can help shape a better world while growing your wealth. Whether you’re just starting out or revisiting your portfolio, going green can be a rewarding decision in every sense.

Exploring Investment Market Opportunities: Unlocking Potential in 2025 and Beyond

The investment landscape is ever-evolving, with new opportunities emerging constantly. Whether you're a seasoned investor or just starting your journey, understanding the most promising markets and sectors can help you make informed decisions and unlock growth potential. In 2025 and beyond, there are several key trends, industries, and asset classes that are poised for significant growth. In this blog, we’ll explore some of the most compelling investment market opportunities that investors should be paying attention to.
1. Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning
Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) have moved from buzzwords to central drivers of innovation across various industries. These technologies are revolutionizing everything from healthcare and finance to marketing and logistics. For investors, the AI/ML space offers substantial opportunities, but it requires careful consideration of the different sectors within the broader technology industry.
Why It’s a Good Investment Opportunity:
Market Growth: The global AI market is projected to grow from $136.55 billion in 2022 to over $1 trillion by 2030, driven by advancements in AI software, hardware, and services.
Diverse Applications: AI and ML have applications across industries, including autonomous vehicles, predictive analytics, personalized marketing, cybersecurity, and robotics.
Venture Capital and Start-up's: Many start-ups focused on AI are receiving substantial funding from venture capital firms, which signals continued innovation and opportunity.
How to Invest:
Tech ETFs: Consider exchange-traded funds (ETFs) that track AI companies, such as the Global X Robotics & AI ETF (BOTZ) or the ARK Autonomous Technology & Robotics ETF (ARKQ).
Individual Stocks: Companies like NVIDIA (NVDA), Alphabet (GOOGL), and Microsoft (MSFT) are heavily invested in AI and could see significant growth.
Private Equity: For higher-risk, higher-reward opportunities, consider venture capital firms or private equity funds focused on AI startups.
2. Renewable Energy and Sustainability
As the world moves toward sustainability, renewable energy sources like solar, wind, and geothermal are becoming increasingly attractive for long-term investors. Governments worldwide are setting aggressive decarbonization goals, which is propelling growth in the green energy sector.
Why It’s a Good Investment Opportunity:
Policy Support: Governments in Europe, the U.S., and Asia are heavily investing in clean energy initiatives, with renewable energy accounting for a larger share of the energy mix.
Climate Change Focus: Investors are increasingly seeking environmentally conscious investments as ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) investing continues to gain traction.
Technological Advancements: New developments in energy storage, energy efficiency, and grid modernization are expanding the potential for renewable energy to meet global energy demands.
How to Invest:
Renewable Energy ETFs: Funds like the iShares Global Clean Energy ETF (ICLN) or the Invesco Solar ETF (TAN) provide exposure to a basket of renewable energy companies.
Green Bonds: These bonds are issued by governments or corporations to finance environmentally friendly projects, providing a stable income stream for investors.
Direct Investment in Energy Companies: Companies like NextEra Energy (NEE), Tesla (TSLA), and Enphase Energy (ENPH) are key players in the renewable energy space.
3. Healthcare and Biotechnology
The healthcare and biotechnology sectors have been rapidly evolving, with innovations in gene therapy, personalized medicine, and telehealth opening up new investment opportunities. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated growth in these areas, and the trend is expected to continue.
Why It’s a Good Investment Opportunity:
Aging Populations: With an aging global population, demand for healthcare services, pharmaceuticals, and medical devices is growing, particularly in developed countries.
Biotech Breakthroughs: Advances in genomics, cell and gene therapy, and immuno-oncology are creating a wave of new therapies that could transform the medical landscape.
Telemedicine: The shift toward virtual healthcare and telemedicine is opening new opportunities in digital health and remote patient monitoring.
How to Invest:
Healthcare ETFs: Funds like the Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLV) or the iShares Nasdaq Biotechnology ETF (IBB) allow exposure to a range of healthcare and biotech companies.
Direct Stock Picks: Companies like Pfizer (PFE), Moderna (MRNA), and CRISPR Therapeutics (CRSP) are at the forefront of groundbreaking treatments and technology.
Private Equity & Venture Capital: Investing in biotech startups or venture capital funds focused on healthcare innovation could provide higher returns, though it comes with more risk.
4. Real Estate Technology (PropTech)
The real estate market is undergoing a digital transformation, with Prop Tech (property technology) leading the way. Innovations like AI-driven property management software, real estate crowdfunding, and blockchain-based smart contracts are redefining how the real estate industry operates.
Why It’s a Good Investment Opportunity:
Efficiency Gains: PropTech companies are improving efficiency in property management, sales, and leasing, creating substantial cost savings.
Real Estate Crowdfunding: Online platforms are allowing small investors to participate in real estate deals, offering fractional ownership in commercial and residential properties.
Blockchain Integration: Blockchain technology is simplifying property transactions, reducing fraud, and increasing transparency, making real estate investment more accessible.
How to Invest:
PropTech ETFs: Funds like the Global X Real Estate Tech ETF (CTRE) or the iShares U.S. Real Estate ETF (IYR) focus on companies leveraging technology in real estate.
Crowdfunding Platforms: Websites like Fundrise and RealtyMogul allow you to invest in real estate projects with as little as $500.
Direct Stock Investments: Real estate technology companies like Redfin (RDFN), Zillow (Z), and OpenDoor Technologies (OPEN) are leaders in this space.
5. Cryptocurrency and Blockchain Technology
Cryptocurrencies have come a long way from their early days as a speculative asset. With the growing acceptance of blockchain technology and digital currencies, the crypto market is becoming increasingly legitimate, especially as central banks and financial institutions explore their own digital currencies.
Why It’s a Good Investment Opportunity:
Mainstream Adoption: Institutional investors and major corporations are entering the cryptocurrency market, adding legitimacy to the space.
Blockchain Beyond Crypto: Blockchain technology is being adopted across industries for applications in supply chain management, finance, and voting systems.
Decentralized Finance (DeFi): DeFi platforms are disrupting traditional banking, providing peer-to-peer financial services without intermediaries.
How to Invest:
Cryptocurrency ETFs and Trusts: Funds like the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC) or the Bitwise 10 Crypto Index Fund (BITW) provide exposure to a basket of cryptocurrencies.
Direct Investment: Investing in cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), or emerging altcoins can offer high potential returns but comes with significant risk.
Blockchain Stocks: Companies involved in blockchain technology, such as Coinbase (COIN) or Riot Blockchain (RIOT), are integral players in the space.
Conclusion: Diversify and Stay Informed
The investment opportunities of 2025 and beyond are varied and abundant, ranging from high-growth technology sectors to sustainable and environmentally conscious investments. While these sectors hold great promise, it's important to remember that every investment carries some level of risk. Diversification across multiple asset classes, staying informed about market trends, and considering your own risk tolerance are key strategies for maximizing returns in today’s ever-changing market.
Incorporating emerging industries like AI, renewable energy, and healthcare into your portfolio could set the stage for long-term success. But as always, it’s crucial to do your due diligence, consult with financial advisors, and stay agile as new opportunities arise. Happy investing!

Tactical Update: Hard Money (PREMIUM-UNLOCKED)

*The following Premium Post was issued to TLS members at 9:20AM CST on February 23, 2021.*
Risk assets are actually down…but opportunity is up.
We mentioned in this week’s WMMR that the straight up, post-election market environment is likely over and the next phase will require more active risk management. Yesterday and today are examples of that. But while yesterday saw a number of big gainers in our portfolio (that actually finished slightly positive on the day), today is offering few places to hide. So what are we doing into the broader selloff? Well, the newly minted more active risk-management environment doesn’t just mean selling/protecting profits — especially into tumbling prices. Profit-taking is done into rallies which is what we have been doing over the past month. If you are able to do that, you can still buy good relative strength names into dips to support. That’s what we have been doing this AM.
Let’s start with some of our recent purchases in “hot” sectors that finally cooled off, allowing for entry points. Obviously, initial support levels did not hold, leading to tests this morning of subsequent support. But we knew that was a possibility which is why we bought only small, “starter” positions. Today, we added to those positions at subsequent support. Specifically:
We added to our position in lithium (LIT) near ~61.
We added to our position in clean energy (ICLN) near ~24.50.
After taking profits in crypto in recent days, we also added back to our allocations there:
We added to our position in our bitcoin fund (GBTC) near ~45 (near bitcoin ~45,000).
We added to our position in our ethereum fund (ETHE) near ~17 (near ethereum ~1400).
There are a plethora of other positions testing support levels. Thus far, here is what we have done:
We added to our position in biotech (XBI) near ~148.
We added to our position in software (IGV) near ~353.
That’s all for now. As always, stay tuned to our DSS posts for further developments — they provide the most current updates to our investment portfolio and outlook. We touched on many of these potential moves in today’s DSS.

A Cigar Room Chandelier
Tucked away in a little vacation town in North Idaho, there’s a building that seems out of place at first pass. This is the Innovation Den.

The building is a wonderful marriage of public and private space. It’s home to several business offices, dedicated coworking space, a barbershop, and some of the best coffee in town thanks to Coeur d’Alene Coffee Company. There are several workspaces like this across the nation, but this is the only one I’ve been to in a town of 45,000 people. Spend just a few minutes in the building though, and you’ll start to think every town in America ought to have a similar building.

The small town charm of Coeur d’Alene definitely flows through Innovation Den. There’s a sense of community among the business occupants, and the small town is excited to have such a visible sign of economic progress and forethought. There’s an excitement in the air - an intoxicating mix of entrepreneurship and artisan coffee.
But the feature we want to talk about today is tucked away just beneath the hive of caffeinated worker bees. In the basement, behind a conspicuously locked door, is The Lair.

This private club resembles the speakeasies of old. The main room is large and dim, but one can make out a few details beneath the overhead Edison pendant lights. The walls are black, lined with black and white art installations. At the back wall the building’s original bar, built 50+ years ago, is now wrapped in copper. Fine leather couches are positioned in the foreground, inviting guests to sit down with a cocktail and enjoy some light conversation. And tucked in the very back, is a private (independently ventilated) cigar room. In this cigar room, hangs our latest piece.

The rustic chandelier is constructed from a solid 5ft 8X8 wooden beam with overhead supports anchored into the ceiling joists. Various lengths of 1 1/2 inch manila rope are wrapped around the beam for added texture and appeal. Six sockets have been wired independently, with the last 18 inches or so of each incorporated in the twists of manila rope, so it appears the sockets are coming from the rope itself. The light is finished off with six 40-watt tungsten Edison bulbs to provide a warm glow that’s easy on the eyes and matches the feel of the rest of the club.

This project was a lot of fun to make, and we’d love to make more. If you are in the market for custom lighting or furniture, please reach out. We’d love to chat about design possibilities!
