chwe hunji and jin eunji’s leaf wants to say: “hey admods! i know this may look a little sudden and a little weird but by the time you see this, i’ve been going around asking all the members what they want to say to you guys to show their appreciation! i know admin e probably already told you, but i used to do theater for about two years and i volunteered my time. i probably worked fifteen-thirty hours a week at a theater and i did not get paid and barely was thanked but i always put in effort. i gave them one hundred percent of myself and, if i was lucky, i would get a five dollar starbucks gift card in return. i was so exhausted and even stopped writing because i could not handle how much of myself i was losing every day. i gave a hundred percent of myself away and got five percent back. now, though, with legacy, everything has been flipped! you guys put a hundred ten percent of yourselves into this amazingly fun and honestly complicated place and i feel like i never get to give back. i know the joy of it all is in watching people write together but for me, just having fun was not enough, i wanted to compile something together for you guys! you do so much for us so i thought it was time i give just a sliver of myself back to you. so! under the cut is a lot of people’s messages that i’ve gathered. a lot of members were unable to send in something in time so i do apologize that not everyone is here, but i added a space in the bottom for anyone and everyone who wants to add something at a later date, so admins and members, be sure to check that often! in the meantime, though, you guys are so amazing and this place already means so much to me, i really hope legacy can continue to grow and flourish beyond your guys’ dreams because you really deserve it! p.s. the below notes are not in any particular order of length or alphabetized, they’re just random C:”

i have never enjoyed a rp as much as this one <3" hwang jaerim and im hyunjin’s jia wants to say - "hello admod team, yall know im always here to bother u all with my weirdness and you guys are all great to talk to. i've been lucky enough to have been here since day 1 and to see this place flourish and see all the efforts you put into the rp, makes me glad to be here. thank you!!" oh max and park viggo’s lyn wants to say - "as one of those muns that has been in legacy from the very beginning, i've witnessed this rp grow and i can’t help but to feel extremely proud and happy for the admod team who works tirelessly to make sure that the progress isn’t only with the rp but genuinely with the muses within it. the admins take it into their own hands to celebrate the achievements that muses have obtained and put them on the spotlight, personally i've experienced screaming and getting emotionally overwhelmed with some of the mods at how happy and ecstatic i felt with some of the results for my muses. with that said i want to make it clear that my muses don’t always get what they want, when it happens, i do share some down time with said mods as well- not to complain but to just talk. the same happens vice versa, when the mods' muses don’t get a spot in future dreams or didn’t get the center of a group, or when they land a cf spot or has made progress by moving on a different path, i'm able to witness their reactions as muns as well- which quite frankly is humbling considering that it reminds me that their muns too and not just mods. essentially what i'm trying to say is that based on my experience and mine alone although i have no doubt i'm not the only one who feels this, clearly this post proves it, that the admod team is not just there to provide us with countless numbers of events or answer our endless amount of questions and woes with admirable patience or guide us in the right direction when we misplace a point or two in our submits, but rather to present us muns with a safe and progressive platform to comfortably establish and allow our muses to flourish in a highly entertaining environment. so thank you legacy team for your heartwarming and admirable work, i know this hasn’t been easy for you guys but hang in there, a lot of us got your backs ♡"

🎉HAPPY 6TH BIRTHDAY, ROOKIES 🎉

On December 9th, 2013, Rookies as we know it was created. We’re so happy to be able to celebrate six years of Rookies with you all!

First of all, we want to express our greatest thanks to the members, past and present, for making Rookies what it is. We’re also grateful for the previous staff members for giving us such a great foundation to build upon, and for inspiring and encouraging us in our journey to become the mods you know us as today. None of this would’ve been possible without any of you!

None of the current mods are the mods that started Rookies. Once upon a time, we were all members just like you, and we grew into our current positions. We’ve seen so much growth like that in the past six years, and we’re so happy to be here for it.

As each anniversary goes on, it’s so easy to take them for granted. In actuality, making it to six years is a spectacular feat, and one we’re incredibly proud of, though we can’t take too much credit. The credit largely goes to all of you, the members, for loving Rookies and your muses. Thank you so much for joining us in RK’s journey, no matter how short or long your stay.

Thankfully, that journey isn’t over! We have many things planned for 2020, and we hope you’re as excited for them as we are. In the meantime, this day, and this week, is one for celebration. As per tradition, all of the mods have some thoughts on this day under the cut. Thank you for everything Rookies, always.

every year is like this, but i can never believe that a whole other one has passed! i had to go check because my baby brain managed to forget, but i became a mod all the way back in 2017 before i even completed a year as a member, and i was only 17. each year i grow a bit more, both in rookies and outside. from that high schooler who joined an rp without much thought, now i’m 20 and three years deep in college. from doing my first big event in 2018, this year i started taking care of all events with the departure of both mira and sera. i’m ever so thankful for the new mod additions we got and who helped me and the rest of the staff to get some weight out of our shoulders. thank you to all the members who were part of our year and those who took part in our events! look forward to what we have in store for next year! i’m looking forward to what you’re all going to do with your muses as well! happy sixth anniversary and to many more from here!

i don’t even know where to begin. it feels like the past year has gone by so quickly, and like our fifth anniversary was lifetimes ago at the same time. what needs to come first is my upmost gratitude for giving us six years of rk, definitely. i always tell the story: when i first joined rk on december 22nd, 2013, i was really overwhelmed and thought i was going to leave within my first two weeks. i never in a million years imagined i would end up becoming mod carly in november 2015, and then that i would go on to be the longest standing staff member in rk’s history (alongside kyle.)

thank you for giving me that. yes, i’ve put a lot into rk, but that’s only because you all did first. i couldn’t have gotten through any year of modding, let alone running rk, without your love and enthusiasm for the roleplay, and support of me, not just as a mod, but as as a person. rk has been so huge in my life. y’all make me a better mod, and more importantly, a better person, every day. i will always be thankful to you and the things i’ve learned from you and i will never forget it or the time we’ve spent together in these six years.

i fear that all of this has a looming feeling of finality, and honestly, it does. there will be more in a coming announcement, but as you know, i recently took some time away to think and i’m coming back to my role as a mod knowing i’ll be leaving the team sometime in 2020. that means this will be the last one of these anniversary messages i get to type up for one of these posts. there’s so much i could say, but i think i’ll save a lot of it for an announcement at a later date, because i hope to make some more good memories in the coming year before my time as rk’s head of relations ends for good. more importantly, this is a time for MUCH celebration!! it’s only right that my message here does just that!!

i know this year in rk’s history was a difficult one (for all of us, i’m sure, but certainly for me) but thank you all so much. thank you for loving rk as much as you have, and for continuing to through all of the ups and downs. thank you for your amazing characters, and choosing rk as their home. thank you for all of your dedication and creativity and heart. thank you for the members that have taken their leave, too, for leaving their mark on rookies and being part of our six years. thank you for letting me be a part of all of this, and for trusting me with your problems and heartaches over the years. thank you for letting me help you, and letting me learn from my mistakes when i fail to do that.

running rk has been the greatest honor of my life, and will continue to be until i don’t run it anymore, and move on to things that will have to fight to mean more to me than this has. until then, i look forward to the coming year, and the inevitable next anniversaries that i get to spend as a member along with all of the rest of you. i love you with all of my heart, rookies. thank you, thank you, thank you ♡

Hello Rookies! I just want to say thank you for being here with us no matter if you've been here a week or for all six years we've been around! I know a lot, probably the majority, of you probably don't know me aside from my welcome messages when you first bring in your wonderful muses, as I do have a tendency to stick to myself. Even so, I want to let you know that I'm always happy to see you all enjoying yourselves and love seeing all the love you have for your characters and I hope that RK can be a place that everyone can continue on for years to come. tbh this feels kind of weird?? to be in this post and write this message for all of you to read as a part of the team… it hasn’t been that long since i joined the mod team alongside gab and i have to admit that sometimes it still feels surreal to me. that all of this really happened, that i applied and actually made it and got picked for the team — i think in about two days it’s been exactly six months since i joined the team. since i got added to the mod server, got introduced to my tasks as bandaid mod but i still remember waking up to carly’s messages informing me that i got picked like it just happened.

last year i was sitting in front of my laptop reading the mods anniversary messages and now i’m writing one of those myself. for all of you. as a mod. i’m— 😳😳

it still makes me really happy and i’m very glad, i’m very thankful. because i like being a mod. actually, i love it. i love the team, i love updating our lists, i love helping out and being able to be there for all of you whenever you have problems or need a helping hand. i love thinking and discussing ways to make this roleplay a long-lasting and better experience for all of you. and using this chance to speak honestly with all of you i came partially from a place where, before i joined, i had sympathy and understanding for the mods but still sometimes found myself thinking that they’re not doing enough for the roleplay. that there’s not enough action, not enough effort and i doubted certain decisions but then i became part of the team and i was so lucky to get to see how passionate the team is. each and every one of them. how dedicated they are, how thoughtful. and how hard they work at all times for all of you.

that’s all they think about.

so i’m also writing this here with a small wish: be kind to them. be kind to us. they do their best— we do our best, we work hard for you and we always will. we love you.

and we’re glad you’re here.

Five Times Around The Sun: A Rookies Fifth Anniversary Special

Dear Rookies,

First of all, I’d like to wish the roleplay a happy fifth birthday! I’m aware that not many roleplays live to make it this far. For you guys to make it, I’ll bet it’s some sort of achievement. And it’s all because of the work both the mods and the members of the community put into this. Let’s give ourselves a round of applause!

I warn you that this is more than 5,500 words long. So yeah. You are free to just skip over this if you wish!

There’s so much I want to say, but I’ve never been great at expressing my feelings. (Fun fact: my mom and I start laughing whenever one of us starts getting cheesy or emotional.) I never even properly celebrated either muse’s anniversaries despite them being in Rookies for more than two years! Forgive me if this gets too long. I promise I’ll do my best to keep this concise (Wow, big word!)

With this knowledge, please bear with me as I struggle to convey all that I want to say without cringing at myself.

I guess it’s safest to start sharing the story of why I opted to join Rookies in the first place. Like majority of what happened to me in terms of KRP, it was a complete accident. I have been in KRP since 2011 (if any of you have heard of ADiS, then… yeah… shifty eyes). I kind of stopped roleplaying because a job with a newspaper was difficult af. (I only went home to shower and eat. I was lucky to be able to sleep, lbr here) Anyway, I needed something to do once I resigned from my old job, and my friends got me back into KRP via a Kingsman-themed one, since they wanted someone to RP Infinite with them. I think some of you know which one it is. /cackles/

MOVING ON. This same friend also planned to join the Rookies and wanted a ship for their muse. We both ended up doing applications, but I was the only one who was able to submit because my friend ended up getting a job. Thus, my friend was never able to join the RP and I got accepted.

A little history time! Please bear with me, this is going to be irrelevant to you but I feel like I need to talk about this. Fun fact I probably never told anyone! Wendy was originally meant to be a Krystal muse. However, I had to make a few adjustments because there was either a Krystal reserve or there was a Krystal muse in the RP. I can’t remember which one it was. The muse was loosely inspired by Berry Good’s Johyun and NCT Dream’s Jaemin, who both used to be competitive speed skaters before they became idols. I changed the sport to figure skating because that is the sport I know best. Wendy was also based on several friends of mine, who were all a bunch of somewhat pretty overachievers. (Going to one of the top universities in the country enables you to meet these people, more on that when I talk about Johnny later on.)

I’m not going to lie, this was the first time I was in a directory that was this HUGE. (Not even ADiS was this huge. Min, please correct me if I’m wrong.) It was easy for me to get overwhelmed by the sheer number of people in the directory, along with concerns that my muse was just going to drown among the many way more interesting muses than what I had to offer.

It would have been easier for me to quit, since the reason I joined was gone. However, Jen ( @yujurk ) turned out to be one of my friends from my Indie RP days! Not going to lie, if it wasn’t for Jen, I doubt I’d have stayed in the roleplay at all. Jen helped ease me into the roleplay in all ways imaginable: by plotting with me, introducing me to muns from the same timezone, and answering any questions in case our good mods weren’t online.

As I was navigating and slowly finding my place in the RP, the third season of the MGAs happened! Not going to lie, I wasn’t sure I was ready for Wendy to be signed, but I thought I might as well do it for the lulz. I know I said this a lot, but the MGAs were probably the among the wildest things I ever put a muse through that I swore that I was never putting another muse through it. Despite that, I’m glad I put Wendy through the experience. It taught her a lot about herself, as well as how far she was willing to push in order to achieve her dreams. At this point, I would like to give a shout-out to Team Nova! Wendy and I can’t imagine having any other teammates besides Jungwoo ( @jungwooxrk ), and the former Luhan ( who is still around as @rksoojung and is still one of Wendy’s loves ), Mijoo, and Soyou (RIP muses). Of course, Wendy owes Ricky ( @rkrxcky ) a lot for leading her to where she is today. Thanks you guys.

After the MGAs, Wendy signed with Nova. I’d like to thank everyone in the Nova family, both past and present, for putting up with this tiny girl who claims to be their future CEO. After two years with the company, Wendy has become (hopefully) an even better vocalist and composer. Sure, her dancing and charisma can use more work — scratch that, a lot more work — but we will get her to a level that’s passable. After all, if she intends to inherit the company someday, she has to do well in the department Nova is known for. I never thought Wendy would last this long as a trainee, but here we are. She could have easily left during Royal Survival, but she didn’t. OOC, the event happened when I was taking TOPIK so RIP. IC, the reason was because she believes in whatever plans Nova has for her (if there are any LMAO). Although she’s having second thoughts now, she’s still determined to see it through. She intends to inherit the company from Hyun Bin, so she has to stay. LOL.

To Minju ( @jinkyungxrk ), thank you for being one of the first to welcome Wendy to the company and making it easy for her to adjust to trainee life. Ani ( @rkmiya ), Wendy and Sunmi have made it! Can you all believe it took Wendy TWO FREAKING YEARS to get comfortable enough with Sunmi to call her unni? And can you all believe it took us around that long to actually plot properly? JFC we are both such snails. Matt ( @rksona ), wherever you are, Wendy will always consider Dawon as one of her Nova best friends. After all, they’re both vocalists who signed pretty close to the same time. To my fellow KRP senior citizen MC/Jae ( @sujirk ) (IDK which you prefer so I’ll use both), it’s nice to know there’s someone close to my age who’s still RP-ing too, despite feeling like that Will Smith meme when finding out how YOUNG some of these children are. And here’s to Wendy and Suji getting to know each other and becoming closer. Maddy ( @rkkaeun )… Where do I even begin? Wendy likes Kaeun a lot and is excited to see how Kaeun will grow, and I feel the same about you too. To Chaeyoung mun ( @rkchaeyoung ) (Honestly, I have no idea how you like to be called, so I shall refer to you as Sowon and Chaeyoung mun for now, I’m so sorry!) and Sunny ( @rkmeiqi ), Chaeyoung and Meiqi are special to Wendy because they are simply the first fellow 98-line girls to join Nova. To Neo ( @rkyngsun ), we have yet to talk a lot and plot more, but I’m grateful that you’re okay with Wendy going all Regina George on your girl. This is going to be a slightly slow burn ship before these vocalists become gay for each other in a way. But I just hope we stick together for this crazy ride. And Nana ( @hyunark ), with Hyuna signed to Nova, Wendy’s even happier than ever, despite feeling some occasional salt at their beloved CEO. Here’s to our girls writing more songs together~

To the boys of Nova, thank you all for being the best boys you can possibly be. To Jess ( @rkhuidong ), thank you having Hui be kind of like a dad/older brother to Wendy. Thank you for assuring her that she did the right thing even if she was punished for it. To Chanel, (OMG this is mention number 2, Chanel!) Ricky is Wendy’s coach and kind of mentor, as well as the fourth-wall reality check. To Lex (you better get used to this. I have a feeling you’ll be mentioned A LOT), our kids have gone through so much, haven’t they? The MGAs, surviving Nova, and a lot more. Wendy cares for Jungwoo a lot, and she hopes they can tough this out together. To Joi ( @bambamrk ), Wendy’s always admired how cool and nice he is. She hopes he’s happy. To Fifi ( @haknyeonrk ), Circe ( @rkmbin ), and Lulu ( @rksxngyeol ), Wendy would love to get to know your boys all so much better. To Roe ( @rkhugo @rkyooa @suhork ), Wendy wouldn’t let me lump Hugo with all the other boys of Nova. After all, Hugo is special. I’m grateful that Roe entrusted Hugo’s heart in Wendy’s inexperienced hands. I’m honored that Roe actually agreed to have Hugo go through a slow-burn ship, especially when I’m aware that she isn’t the most patient of people when it comes to that. Thank you for putting up with both Wendy’s lack of affection and her inexperience when it comes to relationships, and all the things she fears. Thank you again for putting up with my snail’s pace replies, but I want you to know it’s because I want to give Hugo the replies he deserves. The muse for this ship is alive and kicking, and I intend to keep it that way. Both Wendy and I love you and Hugo so much, Roe. LOL I spent so much time talking about Hugo that I forgot to mention how much both Wendy and Johnny also care about Yooa and Suho, but they do.

Now I’m on the topic of thanks to, I think I should also give a special shout-out to the girls of rkredvelet. Though we don’t talk as often as I’d like, I have to admit you were among the first to plot with me when I was new here. You are all Wendy’s best friends for life.

To Rose ( @rkyeri ): I like seeing you tweet about dancing and your takes on things. I also learn a lot from you! Your comments in the KT groupchat crack me up a lot as well. You’re doing amazing, bb! On a muse perspective, Yeri is one of Wendy’s oldest friends, going back from their days in Canada. Wendy just wants Yeri to know that she’s proud of her for being one step closer to her dreams. She’s also asking when she can start printing the Anna slogan.

To Keith ( @rkjxy ): Hoy, bakla. Other than being a ray of sunshine to both Wendy and me, thank you for everything. Just as Wendy and Joy have fun together anytime, anywhere, I like to think it can become something like that for us both. I love our discussions about local stuff and fandom. To Kyle ( @seulgirk ): One of the true MVPs of my life. Just as I honestly have no idea where Wendy would be without Seulgi, I don’t want to imagine what would have happened to me if you hadn’t helped me out all those times. Seulgi is practically Wendy’s person. (LBR, if Hugo had to be threatened by anyone, it’s Seulgi.) I also enjoy commiserating over watching winter sports at godforsaken timeslots (one of these days, I’ll understand hockey enough), as well as listening to to you/reading your tweets discussing your muses/muse ideas. And those puns of yours give me so much life.

Anyway, next up, I’d like to give a shoutout to rkbrosquad!!!! Honestly, having you guys made life a lot more colorful for me, as well as both my muses. I’m not going to lie, this is probably one of the first group chats I was ever in, in terms of KRP. It’s like my muses gained a new family with this insane, but loving bunch. I also like how this chat can also turn into a meme dumpsite, a spazz area, and a tea corner if we need it. Here’s to more adventures with our muses and if distance isn’t an issue, I bet we’d all look for chances to meet.

To Jen, you are one of the reasons we have a squad in the first place. Without you, I bet I wouldn’t have stayed after the first week. Having a familiar face who’s been with the RP for a long time helped me get settled much more easily. It was your helpful self that inspired me to pay it forward for the future muns who’d enter the RP. So if anyone’s grateful that I was friendly to them, please direct your compliments to Jen for setting a good example! Other than that, you and your muses changed my muses’ lives completely. Gray will also always be the reason Wendy’s standards for men are so high, since in her eyes, Gray is perfect. (Gray will get Johnny’s love in the KT Boyz segment) Meanwhile, Kangjoon will be that handsome brother Wendy will be protective about because she thinks he deserves the best. To Nana: OMG! This is your second mention. All those posts of Hyuna and LE to send the group chat into a gay panic are more than welcome. It’s always fun plotting with you and your muses, no matter which one it is. Wendy is proud of Jihoon ( @jihoonrk ) in Convex, as well as looking for a chance to release some hilarious pre-debut shit. As for Hyuna, we all know how much Wendy admires Hyuna and loves her a lot. Here’s to hopefully getting to plot with Younghyun sooner or later!

To Maddy ( @aronrk ): Yes, this is your second mention too. Wendy and Aron have yet to thread together, yeah? LOL. Anyway, Wendy obviously cares a lot about Aron, Kaeun, and Nayoung. And I think it carries over to me caring a lot about you. It’s cool to talk to someone who works in the same industry as I do (rather as I used to) and have the same interests. Bonus points for living in the same timezone! (Aron will get Johnny’s love in the KT Boyz segment)

To Sammi ( @rkxminhee ): You are also one of the nicest people I have ever met. I love learning about girl groups from you, since I’m generally clueless about the ones outside of the Big Three or aren’t as well-known. I’m not going to lie, everytime I see Minhee, I think of you. I remember seeing Minhee post that she was in my country, and the first thing I thought was, “DOES SAMMI KNOW MINHEE IS IN MY COUNTRY?!”

To Em ( @borark ): You’re doing an amazing job as a momma to a cutie pie! Anyway, Bora is one of the coolest girls Wendy has ever known, just as I think you are one of my faves. We need a proper thread ASAP when we’re both not busy T_T

Bet y’all thought that was done, right? Nope. We still have a long way to go. Trust me, if you’re getting tired reading this, I’m even more exhausted writing it. We’ll all just have to deal with it. RIP @ us.

Back in 2016, NCT U, NCT 127, and NCT Dream had debuted. Back then, I was aware that Johnny, the SM Rookie who trained with SM the longest had yet to debut. So as a joke, I thought to myself, I’ll debut him before SM does. He came in a month after Wendy got signed at the MGAs. I figured I could handle two muses so LOL. He started as an NPC friend for Wendy who had a crush on Seulgi, and then I thought I could bring him in.

The first time I knew it was time for Johnny to graduate from NPC to actual muse was when I was watching a local drama called “On the Wings of Love.” One of the characters was a spoken-word artist, and I felt like it was something that suited the Johnny muse I had. I also wanted to bring in a muse who can speak Filipino, so I had an excuse to say PUTANGINA on the dash, as well as spread OPM to Rookies.

From there, Johnny just started becoming more real to me as a muse. Johnny was also based on several college friends of mine, who were all a bunch of insanely intelligent and talented people. He was inspired by a classmate who was actually a MYX VJ (local music TV channel) who was also taking up a pre-med degree. Johnny was also inspired by the guy who became our class valedictorian: a dork who was smart AF and could sing, dance, act, write songs, and was part of the debate team with me. One of my closest friends who I miss a lot was gifted with a superior IQ and an almost flawless memory, and she was also a CF model. All these people inspired me to bring Johnny to life.

Honestly, Johnny brought on a new series of challenges that I never thought was possible. I was less awkward when I brought him in, since I was already somewhat at ease with the community. The challenge was to make him want to be an idol. But somehow, fate let things happen and loh and behold!

From not wanting anything to do with the entertainment industry, Johnny finds himself immersed in it all. He would like to thank the former Jungkook muse (who might make a return as a different FC hint hint) for forging his application for that Samsung modeling casting. That started his interest and curiosity for modeling. However, he got his feet wet only when his teacher told him to go for it. But still, that forgery got him a start.

Then, the life-changing talent show happened. Johnny owes Hugo a huge-ass thank you for signing up him for that Hongdae talent show. He is now proud to be a KT (KermiT) Boy. I still have no clue how Johnny wants to develop from being a genius turned model to becoming the artist he can be. But I guess that’s what we will all have to anticipate.

I hadn’t planned for Johnny to fall in love. In fact, I was planning to make him an asexual hermit. Sure, he’s had crushes on Seulgi and Lisa, but he never dreamed those could amount to anything. He was supposed to be forever alone. (To Roe, that time Yukji tried flirting with Johnny will always be one of the most iconic moments.) However, Ten happened! Yay! Nine asked to plot so nicely, and I figured why the hell not? Okay, fun fact, the reason I planned for Johnny to be a hermit was because I was too scared to be called out for face-chasing. I’m relieved that Nine reached out first. And now they’re the cutest boyfriends. Again, I would like to apologize for my snail’s pace when it comes to replies. I will talk a little more about this later on. I promise.

Another reason Johnny has stayed alive for so long was because of all the friends he’s made over the time we’ve been in this RP. Honestly, every single one of these friends have made Johnny’s life more exciting, more colorful, and have taken him in directions he never would have considered if left to his own devices. I guess the long-ass thank you messages are now in order.

To Nine ( @tenrk ): You go first simply because Johnny asked me to. Besides, I want to thank you and Ten for making Johnny believe that he’s capable of love and sexual feelings. Ten makes Johnny want to be the right person for Ten, and to be a better boyfriend. I don’t know whether I ever mentioned this, but Johnny sees Ten in his future. OOC-wise, I’m thankful that you brought us NCT typists together in the group chat. Not to mention, you make me laugh with all the stuff you link in there. In our DMs, I love how we both get soft together over JohnTen. Whether it’s plots for our boys or IRL JohnTen doing stuff, it’s always great sharing the feels with you.

To Yurim ( @rktaeil ): To one of the people I’ve known longest in RK (outside the brosquad), my experience in Rookies wouldn’t be the same without you. I’m glad you brought in Taeil. Although I reply at a glacial pace now, I’m excited to see what happens to Taeil. I still find it hilarious that you declared your NCT bias will be whose calling card you’ll draw. Anyway, the reason your barrel man has yet to come to you is because I will personally bring it to you when I fly there next year. If you have any other requests, please let me know anytime before I fly. (I will let you know when we’re arriving so we can meet.)

To Hunnie ( @yutark ): We have been through a lot during the time we’ve known each other. You point out things I don’t notice otherwise and work way harder than I do, just as Yuta shows Johnny perspectives that are immensely different from his own. I struggle coming up with ways to ruin my muses’ lives and to just write in general. I don’t know how you do it so religiously and so diligently on top of schoolwork. We also spazz over a lot of different fandoms together, and I’m happy that you’re a lot happier now. Also, welcome to the UAAP life. I’m glad you decided to watch basketball with me and that you’re somehow rekindling your love for the game. Game Two, here we come!

To Min ( @rkjaemin ): You would have gone first but Johnny insisted otherwise. Buwisit siya. We have been together since 2011 and I hope this doesn’t change at all. You knew me from when I was a total noob to the RP world, and have been one of those who saw my writing improve or deteriorate over the years. You are one of the loveliest people I’ve ever met IC or OOC. I’m happy you joined this madhouse called Rookies with me, and I hope this is good healing for you from work. I love you and can we please have dinner with the rest of the girls soon? Just as I will always be rooting for you and will be available to help, please tell your evil spawn of a muse that Johnny’s willing to help him too. Same goes for Wendy and Somi.

To Peach ( @rkhaechan ): When I first told Min to join Rookies, I never thought you two would find each other. But I’m glad you did. You make my girl so happy, and with that, I’m happy too. I will go down with the S.S. PeachMin. I better be invited to that wedding. Anyway, Johnny loves Haechan a lot, especially because he makes evil spawn Jaemin so happy. Haechie may be my new fave of your muses, but Soyou will always be special to me. After all, Wendy wouldn’t have lasted in the MGAs without your girl going all soccer mom on the whole team. Wendy hopes that Jihyun unni is proud of her.

To Jen ( @rkmxrk ): You are honestly one of the most fun people I have ever talked to. We can talk about fandom, winter sports, and just about how our days went. It doesn’t really matter. Anyway, I want to thank you for being one of the best mods to help me get settled when I was new here. As well as answering any questions I had, no matter how stupid they were. I’m glad I got over the initial intimidation of “OMG MOD!” to someone I can actually have fun talking to. I just hope Johnny eventually gets over that “OMG SUNBAE!” vibe Taemin gives out. Johnny always saw Taemin as the senior he has to impress and not disappoint. Trust me, Johnny’s trying but he feels like he’ll never be good enough for Taemin’s standards. LMAO

To Lex ( @rksungho ): Oh man, I gave up counting how many mentions you got. This is probably going to be the last. Sungho and Johnny are different as they can be, despite a somewhat similar skillset. Not going to lie, Johnny wants to get along with him, despite Sungho just being so angry at everything.

To Cherry ( @rkjimin ): We don’t get to talk as often as I’d like, but I’d like for that to change as soon as we’re both not busy. Jimin is a lovely muse, and Johnny looks forward to getting to know him better in the future~

To Hunnie ( @rksunwoo ): Sunwoo is special to Johnny, because they joined KT at around the same time. There has to be something to be said about two strangers who started a journey at the same time. Johnny wishes he was as talented and talented as Sunwoo. I like to think that Johnny and Sunwoo have a unique bond that only the two of them can understand.

To Shino ( @rkjinjin ): Johnny and Jinwoo, aka big guy and small fry. Just kidding. Though for real, Johnny is always impressed with Jinwoo’s talent and is grateful to learn so much from him. To Hyunjin mun (T_T IDK How you want to be addressed) ( @rkxhyunjin ): You are the only KT Boy Johnny has no thread with. I’d love for us to change that ASAP. Please?

To the females at KT, Johnny loves and respects you a lot. He’d love to get closer with you all. For now, he declares Haseul ( @haseulrk ) and Jennie ( @rkjennie ) as his faves, because he’s closest to them. Johnny never thought he’d be a step-parent to a dog, but Ahyoung ( @rkxblue ) somehow got him to do it, so she’s special too. He also sees Minji ( @rkariel ) as the older sister you don’t want to disappoint, while Yeri is the younger sister he finds hilarious. He’d also love to get to know Audrey, ( @rkaudrey ), Momo ( @rkxmomo ), Luda ( @rkxluda ), and Chungha ( @rkchungha ) better!

To Carly and Keith, and by some extension, Kate, Johnny has come to see Luna ( @rkluna ) and Jisoo ( @rkjisoo ) (and Eve ( @rkxeve,) by extension) as his lesbian moms. He low-key blames and credits them for being why he is the way he is today. You don’t get raised by two extremely opposite but equally bad-ass women and not be some mix of weird. He doesn’t get to talk to his moms so much, but he wants them to know he loves them a lot.

I can’t leave this without yelling at Lari! Baekhyun ( @rkbyunbaek ) is the best host brother Johnny could ever ask for. Both of us can’t imagine this boy living with anyone else but Baekhyun’s family. Johnny feels bad that they hardly ever see each other anymore, but that doesn’t change how much he loves Baekhyun. Johnny is actually going to be upset when he’ll have to move out of the Byun residence because he’s going to miss this host family a lot.

I’d also like to thank people I have yet to properly thread with (or seldom get to thread with) but talk to frequently OOC, especially on Twitter. There’s way too many of you to be tagged, but you know who you all are. I love how we can talk about anything, ranging from K-Pop to local showbiz, to current events, and more random topics.

Finally, I’d like to thank the mods, each one, having helped me in some shape or form. Kyle, Keith, and Carly, you all got long-ass love letters from me, so I won’t bother repeating myself anymore. To Sera, you truly are hard carry AF. Thank you noticing my hiatus messages and just being there in general. I’ve always told people you are great, and I’m glad my faith isn’t misplaced at all. To Bianca, thank you for answering my stupid AF questions during events. Because I swear even I would roll my eyes at myself for some of the things I ask sometimes. To Mira, you were one of the mods who welcomed me back when I was new. So I’d like to thank you for that. Cogs’ TS2 Apocalypse Run (IX)

Earlier this year, I started revisiting The Sims 2. After a bit of messing around, I decided I’d take a shot at doing an apocalypse challenge run (specifically Phaenoh’s tiered, mod-enforced version). I didn’t succeed the first time, and didn’t document it with screenshots etc. anyhow, so in this second attempt I’ve resolved to do both.

THE SMITHS’ FREE STATE, PART 9 - SO LONG, SHELMERDINE

Two mercifully-timed birthdays -- i bet he steals answers on homeworks too -- bidding the founder farewell -- oh goodie, some crap I can clean off the floor -- Muuuum, stop plaguing my sleep -- people in uniforms -- I imagine Foucault would be proud (or not).

Welcome back! Now, this is a sad chapter. The character I started this run with, Shelmerdine, is going to die of old age pretty soon. She’s had a fantastic go of it - managed to max all skills before elderhood, survived the terrible interval in which greyhairs had complete free will, reached perma-platinum for her aspiration. But now it’s time to bid her farewell.

As a small mercy, she’s set to pass on the day after the two toddlers Aaron and Forseti are eligible to age up via birthday cake, so I won’t have to deal with the toddler ‘relative dies’ fear tanking both of their aspiration meters the day before they start childhood.

As I’ve established before, kids & teens aren’t currently allowed to go to school, nor use any skill-building object that isn’t also simultaneously fun. So childhood in the apocalypse is all about grabbing whatever skill points you can, with whatever objects aren’t banned. The most obvious of these is playing chess, for Logic:

It seems that, with his really low Niceness score, Forseti is inclined to make unconvincing attempts to cheat while playing with others. Attempts of the “hey, look over there” variety, which always end with the other person turning around just as he’s moving he pieces around. I’ll need to find a way to make sure he doesn’t tank his friendships with father and/or brother while he earns his smarts.

Age-rollover time is fast approaching. It’s time to say goodbye to indomitable old Shelmerdine.

Of course, I had to get a photo with all of her descendants in it. Then she said goodbye to each of her children individually.

And here comes bonesy...

You guys remember how the death sequence for fulfilled Sims goes, right? It’s a hell of a thing. The Grim Reaper hits on you...

... tells you to pick up an unexplained suitcase (which might contain anything from what was in your Sim’s personal inventory to their emotional baggage, I dunno)...

... and hands you an extremely ethnic-looking alcoholic cup-thing.

And then you become a ghost.

BYE-BYE, SHEL, YOU WILL BE MISSED.

Back to business; I decided on a solution to the “Forseti pissing people off during chess” problem. Basically, he plays on his own in a corner of the basement,

although I will say that this has a second benefit: Juan needs to level his Logic, too! It’s the only skill he needs maxed to be a master architect.

Both of the careers I’m intending for Aaron and Forseti also require some Logic, but even if this weren’t the case, maxing Logic actually increases the skill-gain rate for everything that isn’t Body or Charisma by 25%, so it’s still worthwhile.

Get a load of this guy:

Name’s Amar Ku. I was completely blindsided by this guy walking down the street, since I’ve never seen him before. Is his hair dyed, or...? Upon greeting him, he did the ‘Kiss Kiss Darling’ gesture, which means he’s a socialite; he must be Juan’s replacement, rolled randomly to fill the gap in the townie roster when he married in.

Panoptica’s got all the skill points she needs to win that final promotion, so I just have her building some other skills to fill her aspiration meter. Like Body skill!

(Note: They can’t do Yoga until they have 3 points in the skill, which means they have to level it by doing radio exercises. These are annoying because they drain Hygiene and Energy, and build the skill more slowly than pretty much any other method. im not gogna have fun)

Meanwhile, Forseti, as our first absurdly-neat descendant, gets to experience the joy of building Cleaning skill really quickly from actual cleaning, as opposed to reading books:

You can’t see it in this picture, but he’s smiling. His Fun need actually increases a little while he’s scraping crap off a toilet seat. Jeez, Forseti.

Oh, minor thing for any 90s kids and/or incidental Homestucks that might be reading this -- the household’s crappy stereo was on while Panoptica was working out, and I had it set to the ‘Techno’ station ‘cos the classic default Salsa mix was getting on my nerves, and then I hear, of all things, a no-vocals version of Chromeo’s ‘Fancy Footwork’ come on.

(I mentioned Homestuck; it was the song used in this fandom meme that I didn’t discover until after the comic had ended [*slight sniff*]. Gods, it’s catchy.)

Upon discovering said song’s presence in the game, I promptly moved the table with the stereo on it up a floor so I could hear it better. Here’s Panoptica doing her jog-on-the-spot routine.

And getting buff, apparently.

Looking good, looking good

Oh, I seem to recall saying back when Kent died that ghosts usually take a night to register that their remains have been moved elsewhere, so Shelmerdine’s debut as a ghost was unlikely to take place on the roof.

Unfortunately, unlike Kent, she did clamber down the ladder from the attic to the floor with all the beds on it, making it really impractical to send anybody up there for some shuteye tonight. If I send them to bed, they’re guaranteed to cancel out of the action at some point, and let the ghost do its Scare action, which drops each of the victim’s needs a bit.

I realised at this point that I actually have more Sims than I do beds, so I worked out a solution to this one-night problem: buy a bed for the basement.

John starts work earlier than Panoptica, so he had priority here. Otherwise, they took it in turns to kip underground until dawn broke and Shelmerdine buggered back off to the Styx, at which point everybody who didn’t have a job collapsed into their own beds.

Well, today’s the day that Panoptica, with any luck, will get promoted up the final rung of the Intelligence ladder! There’s a chance it might take two shifts, even with an almost-full mood. Here she leaves the house in... I don’t know what kind of coat, while Forseti falls victim to my ever more ambitious experiments with the in-game camera:

(I honestly need to brush up on my vocab for types of clothing, I think. When I do write creatively, it’s quite often urban fantasy-type stuff, and it’ll help me to form a clearer picture of how characters look...)

The snow actually thawed for a little while (since it’s always Winter, this only happens when it doesn’t snow for a couple of days in a row) leaving behind some puddles... which of course I sent Forseti to mop up so he could get more experience.

Night falls, and both goasts come out to play, in this rooftop graveyard of empty fridges. (I can’t sell them right now, due to restrictions - I just buy a new one and dump the old one up here.)

And does Panoptica get her final promotion? She does!

Time for some lowkey family celebrations! Here’s Aaron coming outside to give her an after-work hug:

Now I can do lots of new things! Including:

> Let people come inside the house, even if they aren’t already a family friend

> Redeem Popularity aspiration perks (letting John build friendships faster)

> Use the Ask pie menu to scout out townies with good skills/jobs, and

> Chat on/answer the phone!

This makes things much easier. Also, Panoptica’s got a snazzy uniform.

Heh, now both second-generation kids have dark green uniforms.

So, Panoptica has succeeded in living up to the name I gave her! A pleasant development. It’d have been a shame if I’d given her that name only to see her fired by a chance card or something. (I’d probably have thought about Law Enforcement for her, but that’d have required her to max Body, which would be annoooooying, at least until Juan lifts Architecture.)

So, another successful update, another restriction lifted, another gravestone for the roof... hm. I’ve covered a lot of ground here; I think two more updates maximum before I catch up to where I’m currently at with the run.

Claire Beauchamp tapped her foot impatiently on thelinoleum, lips pursed, watching the other students file into the room.

A creative writing class – a birthday gift from herroommate Geillis. It would be a nice break from all those biology andphysiology courses, she had said – and a chance to meet people who weren’tinterested in sickness for a living.

Claire’s eyes followed two sensitive-looking men – all henleyshirts and skinny jeans and moccasins – twins – as they shuffled in and satnear the door.

When was the last time she had had to write somethingthat wasn’t a lab report or a research paper? What business did she have tryingto string her own words together, when clearly there were so many morequalified people who would gladly do it? Who had more experience doing it?

“All right!” he head swiveled to the center of thehorseshoe-shaped tables, where an older but still strikingly beautiful womanthrew her thick black hair back over her shoulders. “Welcome to the WritingWorkshop. Where there are no rules, except to be nice to your fellow writersand their fragile egos.”

Nervous, tired, tentative laughter.

“I’m Diana, and I’ll be your instructor.” She bent totype into her laptop, turquoise rings flashing in the fluorescent light. “We’llbe going through a series of three prompts today, and I’ll allocate – ”

Quietly the door swung open, and a strikingly tall manwith a shock of red hair slunk in, heading for the only open seat – beside Claire.

“And I’ll allocate fifteen minutes per prompt. Then we’llworkshop a bit, take a quick break, and we’ll start it all over again.”

The young man flipped open his backpack and pulled out abattered laptop, emblazoned with heavy metal band stickers and a giganticsaltire flag. His elbow brushed against hers – Claire turned, and he offered aquick, devastating smile of apology.

“Now, you don’t have to follow the prompt, of course –but it’ll be easier for your workshop partner if you do. Ready?”

Claire swallowed.

“All right – the first prompt is just one word, ‘surprise.’Fifteen minutes. Go.”

Immediately there was a rush of paper as the studentsbegan furiously scribbling in their notebooks.

Mind absolutely blank, Claire stared at the blinkingcursor on her laptop screen.

Bloody hell.

The man to her left also did not start right away – but turnedhis head, clearly thinking.

Well then, Beauchamp – you’ve had plenty of surprises inyour life. Should be easy to translate one into a writing exercise…

I don’t think Iever said goodbye. “Good morning,” definitely. “I love you,” I hope. But how coulda five-year-old ever consider that the life she knew would ever change?

My mother wasalways very well-dressed – flowing skirts and colorful blouses and beautiful,shining hair. She didn’t have the curls I was born with – those came from myfather’s side. He was always much more sedate – I don’t ever remember him notwearing a business suit. He worked a lot, had built a successful lawpartnership and was willing to do whatever it took to keep the practice going.

I don’t rememberhim nearly as well as my mother. He would read to me at night, and tuck me in,and taught me how to ride a bicycle when I turned five (and kissed my skinnedknees all better). But my memories are more like images – disconnected snatchesof smells and sounds and the way the light would shine off his glasses when heworked late in his home office.

Mommy and I spent alot of time together – in the park, at the library, at home playing with dollsor cooking in the kitchen. She loved me, and cared for me, and even at thatyoung age I knew I was happy.

I’ve never likeddriving – or riding in – convertibles because the last time I saw them, Daddy wastooting the horn of his Jaguar and Mommy was holding on to her hat with onehand and blowing me kisses with the other.

So happy – not knowingthat so soon, it would be so sad…

Fifteen exhausting minutes later, she saved her draft.

“All right!” Diana enthused from the front of the room. “Nowfind a workshopping partner, swap stories, and take a few minutes to read.Remember, positive feedback is always best!”

“Excuse me?” Claire looked over her shoulder to see thelatecomer, her neighbor, smiling tentatively. “Would you mind swapping stories?”

Just the briefest of hesitations. “Oh – no, no that wouldbe great.” Carefully she handed over her laptop and he gently took hers.

“Now, remember – please focus on positive feedback.”Diana raised her voice over the hum of conversation. “And we’re going to assumethis is all fiction – that it’s not autobiographical.”

“Mine is autobiographical,” Claire said quietly. “And Iwant you to tell me if it’s terrible.”

“That’s just as well – because mine is, too. Well – it’sa true story, anyway,” he amended. Smiling.

She held his gaze, but then tore away. “Well then – let’sread?”

He nodded, and turned toward her screen.

She inhaled softly, browsed the open windows in histaskbar – WhatsApp, Word, Firefox, iTunes – and shifted her eyes to the top ofthe page.

Ellen MacKenzie wasthe most beautiful girl in town – so all the men said, anyway. And when sheannounced her engagement to Malcolm Grant, the star quarterback of the highschool football team, all of Leoch knew that a big celebration was in order.

For Ellen’s parentswere the wealthiest family in the tiny town – and Malcolm’s father was businesspartners with Ellen’s father. The couple had grown up together – had datedthroughout high school – and a marriage uniting the two families was a foregoneconclusion.

Ellen’s best friendgrowing up was a quiet boy whose father worked as the janitor in Mr. MacKenzie’soffice. Murtagh FitzGibbons always looked out for Ellen – keeping her safe fromthe mean girls and boys on the playground when they were little, fighting offdrunken football players at high school parties when they got older. He was inlove with her – and she knew it – but they both knew he wasn’t right for her.That their families would never approve.

Of course Murtaghwas invited to Ellen’s engagement party – for he was to be the Man of Honor ather wedding. As Murtagh had no date of his own to bring to Ellen’s party, he broughtalong his cousin Brian Fraser – who was visiting from out of state.

The story goes thatMurtagh introduced Brian to Ellen two days before the engagement party, at acasual family barbeque held in the backyard of the MacKenzie estate. ThenMurtagh got distracted and needed to help organize the food and drinks, leavingBrian and Ellen relatively alone in the gazebo on the pond in the far corner ofthe backyard.

Two days later, theguests arriving for Ellen’s big engagement party had to be turned away. ForEllen had run off with Brian Fraser during the night, destination unknown.Murtagh secretly followed behind a few days later, and served as the onlywitness to their wedding.

Life after that washard for Brian and Ellen, but they knew they had done right…

Claire gasped, laying one hand flat on her sternum. Whata surprise, indeed – and such a sweet, gentle story this man had shared withher.

“You say this is a true story?” she whispered hoarsely.

He turned from her screen and smiled tentatively. “Yes,it is. Brian and Ellen were my parents. Murtagh is my godfather.”

Her eyebrows lifted almost to her hairline in surprise.

“And I’m reading your story correctly – we have somethingin common. We love our parents, and miss them greatly.”

Her eyes shone with unbidden tears.

His eyes, so blue, locked with her own.

“I’m Jamie,” he whispered. Mesmerized.

“Claire,” she rasped.

“Time’s up!” Diana’s voice cut through the classroomchatter. “All right, ten minute break and then we’ll be back at it!”

Jamie boldly reached over to take Claire’s hand.

“Do you mind if we find somewhere else to go, Claire?”

Her heart stuttered, and she didn’t stop to think. Onlyreached over, closed her laptop, and stood.

“Let’s go.”

His teeth flashed in an ear-splitting grin, and he packedhis own bag, took her hand, and let her lead him into the hallway.

Wow I hadto whip something up so fast ! birthday requests are so cute, but they have tobe written as soon as I see the request asdfg it was fun though !! I includedthe transfer student as the 2nd person POV and i changed it a bit from shinobu celebrating his birthday to shinobu’s friends making sure he celebrates his birthday~ but as you specifiedfriends I kept it friendly~ I love writing platonic stuff too !!! and thank youso much for the nice words, they mean a lot ♥ ♥ - mod mademoiselle

beware, for i accidentally wrote 4000+ words of nonsense, including Ryuseitai silliness, sashimi, a shameless Naruto ripoff, a lot of “de gozaru”, heartwarming friendships and cake. (especially cake)

To be fair,you didn’t really know why you’d agreed to this, but Chiaki’s eyes weretwinkling happily, so maybe it was worth it in the end… You were currentlycrouching on the ground, hiding behind thick bushes near the school’s gymnasium.Tetora was periodically making sure no one was looking your way, while Kanatawas just humming faintly. You and Midori shared a knowing glance. You faintlyfelt this impromptu “emergency meeting” was going to turn out weird, andjudging from how tired Midori already looked, he felt the same.

“Alright,looks like the field is clear… !” You and Tetora quickly shushed the boisterousRyuseitai leader, worried he’d attract attention on you. He did seemintent on wanting to hide, after all. He seemingly took the hint, as hecontinued slightly less loudly than before. “I had to reunite my brave fellow Ryuseitai members again for avery special occasion ! Sorry if you had something to do today.” Chiaki laughedembarrassedly, stroking the back of his neck. Midori just shrugged, obviouslynot pleased by this sudden outcome.

“it’s‘fine’, it’s for a ‘special occasion’ after all…” You nodded at Kanata’s words,even though you were getting a bit confused. Did they already know why Chiakiwas suddenly fired up ? Well, it wasn’t like he needed something big to get allexcited, though. Tetora probably sensed your confusion, as he sent a boyishgrin your way.

“I guess noone told you, but it’s Sengoku’s birthday soon !” Oh. That certainly explainedwhy he wasn’t there with you.

“And by‘soon’, he means tomorrow”, Midori added with a sigh. That wasn’t evensurprising to you. Chiaki’s pretty bad at planning things through, after all.

“So, what’sthe plan ? Did you guys want to do something in particular ?” They all noddedto your question, although Chiaki was the one to engage in a lengthy (anduseless) speech again.

“Of course! What allies of justice wouldn’t celebrate their dear comrade’s birthday ?There’s nothing like a powerful symbol of friendship to revive everyone’sburning spirits ! A friendship forged in fire such as ours deserves to be—“Chiaki kept getting excited in the background, but your focus shifted on Kanatainstead.

“chiakisaid he wanted to hold a ‘surprise birthday party’ for him…” That actuallysounded like a reasonable plan. You turned to look at Midori and Tetora,feeling a bit giddy at the thought of being part of a surprise party for one ofyour friend’s birthday.

“That’s agreat idea ! Did you start planning it already ?” Tetora just grimaced as ananswer, while Midori looked pointedly to the ground. … Why did you have a badfeeling about this ?

“Uh,actually, we wanted to ask your help about that. I mean, we don’t really knowhow to do that… Maybe you can help ?” Tetora suggested, fiddling with histhumbs.

“I don’twant to be alone with him. If youcould help…” Midori never finished his sentence, but you could see all hissuffering and desperation in his eyes. You briefly wondered if Chiaki reallywas that terrible… Then again, he was still talking to himself while no onepaid attention. You dutifully waited until he was done with his little speech,already thinking about how you should prepare the birthday party.

“Alright, Iguess we’re going to need to work in teams. Since it’s tomorrow, we don’t havethat much time, right ?” They nodded with varying degrees of enthusiasm. Midoristill got closer to you to whisper in your ear.

“I don’twant to be with Leader…” You laughed awkwardly as Chiaki looked at the two ofyou with a big smile, as oblivious as ever.

“Uh, I’lldo my best so that you’re not together.” You added a bit louder, for everyoneto hear : “Okay, we’re going to need, um…” Their suggestions were pretty quick.

“A cake !” “ ‘gifts’…”“People, I guess… ?” Well, they weren’t wrong.

“We’ll seeabout that after we’ve found where to hold the party, okay ? Does anyone knowwhere we could do that ? Maybe at someone’s place ?” Chiaki immediately put ahand on Midori’s shoulder, and you distinctly heard him groan.

“Takamine-kunlives close to the school, what a perfect coincidence—“

“Pleasedon’t let him come to my house”, Midori immediately cut him off, not even botheringto lower his voice. Chiaki just laughed at his comment, patting his shoulderwith so much force it was probably going to leave a bruise.

“How aboutjust holding the party in an empty classroom ? Wouldn’t it be better, since wedon’t have to go to someone’s house ?” Tetora suggested, throwing a hesitantlook your way. He seemed relieved when you nodded.

“Yes, let’sjust do that. It’s simpler for everyone that way. Alright, we need people tofind, um… Shinobu’s friends ?” You stopped a moment. Did he even have friends ? You quickly brushed thethought away, as everyone was listening intently to you. “And also a cake, anda gift, as you suggested.” Phew. So far so good. Everyone was nodding eagerly.

“I can takecare of the food !” Tetora was bouncing happily next to you, but you were quickto shake your head.

“Literally anyonebut you.” He hanged his head dejectedly, mumbling about how he greatlyimproved his cooking skills recently.

“Well, Ican go and find a gift for Sengoku-kun !” Chiaki suggested, and you noddedafter a moment’s reflexion. It didn’t seem like he’d break anything or cause anaccident, so you were fine with it.

“Alright,we trust you with the gift then ! Do you need someone to come with you ?” Youweren’t even done with your question when Chiaki turned to Midori, giving himhis brightest smile. Midori’s eyes were throwing daggers at him.

“No way.I’m staying here… it’s less troublesome this way…” You nodded again, lost in your thoughts. It was going to be hard to get Midori to move…

“i willmake the ‘decorations’…. an ‘empty classroom’ is too ‘bare’…” Kanata washumming happily again, already looking in his bag for fabrics and a sewing kit.You just looked at him confusedly before getting a hang of yourself.

“Oh, um, ifyou want, yeah. That’s a good idea !”

Midori waslooking at Kanata with bright eyes, especially when he got a paper covered insea animals’ drawings from his bag. “Kanata-senpai, are you going to sew these…?”

He justnodded in response, smiling faintly to his junior. “you can ‘watch’ if youwant…”

Midorididn’t really need more to throw an imploring look your way .“Can I stay withKanata-senpai… ? His plushies really heal me…” Well, you didn’t really have achoice, did you.

“Yeah, ofcourse. So the two of you will work on decorations. What about you, Tetora ?”He was still pouting from before but quickly forgot it as you looked his way.

“Since youwon’t let me cook, I guess I’m going with Leader to find a gift ! I’m friendswith Sengoku so I might find something he likes.”

“It’s notthat I won’t let you cook, it’s just that…” Although you were quick to answer,you couldn’t bring yourself to tell him you wouldn’t ever let him alone in akitchen for the rest of his life under threat of putting everyone in thesurroundings in danger. Fortunately, Chiaki patted your shoulder vigorously,offering you an easy way out.

“What aboutyou ?” he asked. Now that you thought about it, there was still the cake to buyor make from scratch, but finding Sengoku’s other friends seemed even moreimportant. Nothing would make him happier than celebrating with his friends,right ?

“I’m goingto tell his other friends about this ! Let’s meet up once everyone is done,alright ?” You quickly checked the time before getting up. Classes had stoppednot so long ago, so you still had most of the afternoon.

“Let’s dothis ! Good luck, everyone… ✰” And with those words of wisdom from Chiaki, you and the boys each wenton your way.

As you wandered down the school’s hallways, you wonderedif you’d ever seen Sengoku hanging out with someone other than the Ryuseitaimembers. You were about to head to his club, the Ninja Association, when yousuddenly remembered he was the only member in it. Dammit. Fortunately, hewas also a part of the broadcasting committee, which you decided was a goodplace to start. Only Makoto and Nazuna were inside the school radio’s studio,which was definitely a good thing.

“Oh, that’s you. Did you have business with us ?”Nazuna smiled at you amicably and invited you to sit with them, as Makoto evengot some tea ready for you. You didn’t even have time to refuse : there was asteaming hot cup right in front of you and Makoto looked very pleased withhimself. You quickly explained the whole surprise birthday party thing,mentioning that you’d like to invite Shinobu’s other friends too.

“I see, that’s really kind of you ! Good kid.” Nazunagrinned and started petting your head reflexively.

“Sengoku-kun and I are not exactly the closestfriends, but he’s a nice kid ! I’ll come tomorrow, if you don’t mind me… ?”Makoto asked, visibly relieved when you shook your head.

“It’d be nice if the two of you could come ! I’m surehe’d be happy”, you answered, looking at the two of them. They shared a glance,then smiled at you.

“No problem,I’m coming too ! It’s the job of a senpai to make his cute kouhai happy, afterall~” You smiled in your turn, feeling a bit relieved. It wasn’t going to be ashard as you thought, actually…

“Oh, by the way, do you know if he’s especially closeto anyone ? Maybe someone in his class ?” Makoto shrugged at your question, whileNazuna looked deep in thought.

“Well, I can tell the kids from his class about theparty. Makoto-chin will help me too, right ?” Makoto nodded happily, which madeNazuna grin again. “Don’t worry about that, I’ll tell everyone he knows ! Iguess you must be busy with other stuff you need to prepare, after all.Nii-chan will do that for you~” You could only thank them and hastily drink thetea Makoto poured for you, before you quickly went to the cafeteria’s kitchens.There was still the matter of the cake left, and it certainly wasn’t going tobake itself.

Honestly, you didn’t know what you were expecting tofind in the kitchens, but it was certainly not Souma cutting fresh fish. Thesmell had invaded the entire room, and you struggled to keep concentrating onthe flour you were trying to measure.

“What are you doing exactly, Souma ?” You eventually gave in to curiosity and turned your head his way, all while whisking theingredients in a bowl. He did the same, a little smile on his lips.

“I thought I would prepare fresh sashimi forHasumi-dono and Kiryu-dono. They have been working very hard for my sake lately.Fresh fish is quite delicious, and is excellent for your body too. Do you wantto try some ?” He handed a piece of raw fish your way, and you shook your headas politely as you could.

“I’m good, don’t worry. Besides, I’m cooking too.” Henodded, taking a break in his own cooking to come and look at you for a moment.

“If that isn’t too rude, may I ask what you are bakingthis cake for ?” You smiled at his question, adding melted chocolate to thedough.

“It’s for Shinobu’s birthday. We’re having a surpriseparty for him tomorrow.” You suddenly thought he might want to be invited too,and quickly added “You can come too, if you want.”

Souma was looking at you mixing the ingredientstogether, seemingly deep-in-thought. “I am ashamed I didn’t know about thisearlier. I would be delighted to join you on your celebration. Let me preparesomething as a gift for him.” You happily grinned, glad you found one morefriend of Shinobu’s.

“Do you get along with him ?” Souma nodded, back tocutting his sashimi.

“He is a promising ‘aidoru’. He even taught me theninja run. I am forever grateful to him.” You tried to picture the ever-dignifiedSouma running like Shinobu often does and couldn’t stifle a little laugh. Thefishy smell quickly brought you back to Earth though.

“By the way, what are you preparing for tomorrow ?”

Souma’s answer was as quick as his knife on the board.“Sashimi, obviously.”

Once the cake (and sashimi) were taken care of, youwent back to the school’s main building to join with everyone else. It wasalready getting pretty late, and you still didn’t have news from the otherboys. You were checking your phone to see if no one tried to call you while youwere busy when you heard someone running your way.

“Ah, here you are ! I’ve been looking for you,actually.” You quickly looked up : it was Yuta, not even out of breath. Youwere slightly surprised to see him running in the hallways, as he seemed moreprone to respect rules than his brother, but as he got closer you noticed helooked unusually excited.

“A senpai from the broadcasting committee told me youwere planning a surprise birthday party for Shinobu-kun, so I came to let youknow I’m coming too.” You found yourself smiling. The “guests” part of the planwas going great, so far !

“That’s good ! You’re friends, aren’t you ?” Now thatyou thought about it, you did often see them hanging out with each other. Yutahappily nodded, and you added : “Then I think he’d love to see you there too !Thanks for coming, Yuta.” He fidgeted a bit when you smiled to him, looking bothhappy and embarrassed.

“I can also tell Sora-kun and Mitsuru-kun from ourclass to come, since they’re good friends with Shinobu-kun too. Besides, Ialready bought a gift for him, so I’ll be giving it to him there.” You wereabout to answer when your phone rang, and you quickly took the call. Tetora’spanicked voice was so loud you had to put the phone away from your ear a bit.

“We’rehaving trouble~ ! I made the mistake to bring Leader in the DVD aisle and nowhe won’t move from the tokusatsu section ! What should I doooo~ ?! ” Yeah, you figured these two would mean trouble at some point.

“Tetora, did you find a gift yet ?” You could barelyhear him, as Chiaki was blabbering happily in the background.

“Uh,actually, I also wanted to ask if you had an idea, because Leader’s really sucks.”Dammit. An idea suddenly came to mind and you put thephone away to ask Yuta :

“If you don’t mind telling me, what did you buy forShinobu ? You mentioned buying a gift for him, didn’t you ?” He nodded, lookinga bit confused at how Tetora was still shouting in the phone.

“Yeah, I bought him a keychain of his favoritecharacter from that famous ninja anime he likes.” Great. You smiled at him tothank him and put the phone back to your ear, wincing when you realized howloud Tetora was really being.

“How about buying him a DVD ? Yuta just told me helikes this famous ninja anime.” Tetora’s answer was pretty quick.

“Ah, yeah, I liked it too as a kid ! Yeah, they havethe latest volume here. It even comes with a rare poster, apparently… Do youthink he’d like that ?”

“I’m pretty sure he’s gonna love it.” You and Yutashared a grin. So far, so good.

Everyone seemed pretty pleased at the recentdevelopment of events. Thanks to Makoto’s help, Mao had agreed to come too andeven managed to secure a classroom for the party. He somehow was Shinobu’s idolafter all, so everyone agreed he’d be happy to see him there. The cake wassitting in the cafeteria’s fridge, Chiaki and Tetora had brought back the giftin cute wrapping, Nazuna had bought little party hats and party crackers, andKanata made a lot of sea animal plushies, which everyone was kind of puzzledabout. Oh well. As long as he had fun. Yuta, Sora and Mitsuru even made a cutebanner, which read “Happy Birthday Sengoku-kun”. Really, everything was readyfor the D-day.

The next day finally came, but went by at an agonizinglyslow pace. So naturally you found yourself being pretty excited once the bellrang. Souma and Makoto gave you a little smile as you got up, taking your bagwith you and hurrying to the classroom Mao had reserved for the party. You weresurprised to find Tetora and Midori already there, busy plastering Ryuseitaiposters on the walls. When Tetora saw you, he waved so enthusiastically healmost fell from the chair he’d climbed on.

“ ‘Sup ! We’re finishing up the deco ! It looks nice,right ?”

“Yeah, you could say that ? Was that Chiaki’s idea ?”You were fairly sure he was the one to come up with it, but you still asked,hoping for a miracle.

“Yep ! He said it would brighten things up a bit !”Right. Someone had also put cute little sea animals plushies here and there,making you suspect a certain sea-loving senpai was also somewhere in the room.

“Is Kanata here too ?” you asked with a smile, pickingup a cute octopus plushie. Midori turned to nod faintly, even smiling a bit.

“He’s just over there.” And indeed, Kanata came backfrom under a desk, hair a bit disheveled and holding several more plushies,including one covered in wrapping.

“Hello everyone~” When Yuta entered the room, alongwith Sora and Mitsuru, you smiled and waved at them.

“We brought candy !” Mitsuru happily exclaimed, whileSora was busy emptying a bag full of candy on a desk. Yuta was already busyhanging their hand-made banner with Midori and Tetora’s help.

“Hey~ Is everything going well ?” Mao came in the roomin his turn, Makoto hot on his trails. You nodded, busy helping Kanata findingthe best place to put his plushies.

“Yeah, we’ve got the gift, the, uh… plushies, andSouma went to the kitchens to get the cake and the… uh, the sashimi.”

“Sashimi ?” Makoto laughed, shaking his head. “Hey,that’s not surprising at all actually ! As expected from Kanzaki-kun !” SaidKanzaki-kun promptly came as well, holding a plate in each of his hands. Nazunawas with him and opened the door as well as he could, considering he wascarrying a bunch of cans of juice and soda.

“Hi guys ! I suddenly thought we were going to bethirsty, so I ran to the vending machine and got juice for everyone.” Hegrinned as Mitsuru rushed to jump on him, threatening to make him drop all thecans.

“Nii-chan came too ! Waah, this is like a real party !”Mitsuru shouted, as Nazuna was trying to put the cans on a desk withoutdropping either them or Mitsuru. Souma was busy cutting the cake with a knifehe thoughtfully got from the kitchen, as Midori was watching over his shoulder,shooting you a little smile.

“You baked it, right… ? I didn’t know you could cook, senpai…♪” You justsmiled proudly at him, trying your best to look cool. Of course, he didn’t knowyou struggled and worried that you might have ruined the entire thing becauseyou put too much milk, but it seemed to have turned out pretty good. Andtasty-looking, judging by the expression on everyone’s face. You couldpractically hear stomachs growling already.

“Hey, the party’sway better than I thought it would be !” Tetora was smiling widely as Kanatawas putting a party hat on his head, and you couldn’t help but find his enthusiasmcontagious. It did feel pretty nice. Maybe because there was cake. Yeah, onsecond thought, cake seemed to make everything better. Your thoughts quicklycame back to the party, though, and especially its missing organizer.

“By the way,where’s Chiaki ?” you asked, looking at everyone assembled in the room. He didn’tseem to be there… Kanata beamed at you, waving a lobster’s plushie right infront of your face. It did strangely seem to evoke Chiaki’s image to your mind.

“he went to get‘shinobu’… they should be ‘back’ soon…” You were about to answer when you heard Ryuseitai leader’s boisterous voice in the hallway, and everyonequickly hid wherever they could. You felt a hand grip your sleeve and tug it,making you hide under a desk. The culprit seemed to be Mao, who sent a grinyour way before to put his index in front of his lips in a meaningful gesture.The room was now eerily quiet, even though you could feel everyone’sexcitement. The atmosphere was almost electric.

“… and I don’tmean to make you afraid, but there’s something extremely important waiting for you in this room !” Yep, that wasChiaki’s voice alright, and you were pretty sure he was speaking extra loudlyto make sure everyone heard. You saw Midori roll his eyes, hiding under thedesk next to yours, and you stifled a laugh. Mao shushed you, but you could seethe corners of his lips tugging into a smile too.

“I-Is that so ?Did I perhaps do something wrong de gozaru ?” Oh no, poor Shinobu was gettinganxious…

“I can’t tellyou, you have to open that door by yourself.” Chiaki’s voice sounded graverthan usual, and everyone was holding their breaths. You were getting ready toget out of under that desk yourself, making sure your legs weren’t numb. You werestuck in a pretty weird position, after all.

“I-It is as yousay, Leader-dono… I should be a proud man and face every danger de gozaru !”The door suddenly opened, revealing a livid Shinobu, and you suddenly felt Maodragging you upwards again. You think you accidentally stepped on his foot, butit didn’t really matter since all the party crackers in the room were beingpopped and everyone suddenly started shouting.

“Happy birthdayShinobu !” His eyes (well, more like the only eye you could see) fell on thebanner, and he stayed silent for a moment, eyes (eye ?) wide and mouth hangingopen. It took Chiaki violently clasping his shoulder (and probably leaving abruise, again) for him to start remembering how to talk.

“Everyone…” Heabruptly stopped, sniffling loudly and looking away. Chiaki didn’t really needmore to lock him in a bear hug, laughing brightly.

“Don’t cry,Sengoku ! Laugh with us, just like me… ✰” Surprisingly, Tetora rushed to jointhe group hug, then Kanata, and even a not-so-reluctant Midori. The others werequick to join them, and Nazuna even took your hand with a smile.

“Aren’t you theone who made all that possible ? Come on, you deserve it too ♪” Before you knewit, you were stuck in an ocean of arms, hugging whoever was in front of youtight and laughing along with everyone else, as Shinobu’s face peeked fromunder Chiaki’s form.

“Thank you somuch, everyone…”

The party wasas successful as an improvised birthday party could have been, everyone loving thecake and showering Shinobu in affection. He got, as planned, a keychain fromYuta, the DVD set from everyone and a cute frog plushie from Kanata. Once thecandy and soda stock had been thoroughly depleted and the sugar rush started tokick in, Shinobu even gave ninja running lessons to enthusiastic Tetora andMitsuru, and a not-so-willing Midori. They even sang “happy birthday” in unisonas loud as they could, and obviously Keito came to scold everyone for making aruckus. Eventually, it was time to call it a day and everyone helped clean up the room.As you were slowly going out of the school, with the boys still laughingloudly, you found yourself with the Ryuseitai members, surrounding a veryhappy-looking Shinobu.

“Really, youall have my sincere thanks… ! I truly enjoyed myself, de gozaru… ♪” Chiaki pathis shoulder again, probably leaving even more bruises in his wake, as Kanatasmiled happily.

“it’s ‘nothing’,really… we’re ‘glad’ we did it too…” Chiaki nodded firmly at Kanata’s words,now clasping Midori’s shoulder for some reason. Midori obviously wasn’t pleasedwith this.

“He’s right !It’s what friends do for each other, you know !”

You saw Shinobu’seye widen a bit, before he shyly murmured : “Friends…”

Tetora grinnedin response, throwing an arm around the self-proclaimed ninja’s shoulders. “Yup,that’s right ! Friends ! Right, Midori-kun ?”

Now that Chiakihad removed his hand from Midori, he looked a lot happier and even gracedeveryone with a little smile. “Right.”

Shinobu didn’tanswer at first, instead looking down at his feet, smiling bashfully. Hischeeks were getting pinker and pinker with each passing second, and youexchanged a smile with Chiaki. This whole birthday party plan seemed to be ahuge success, and Shinobu was quick to confirm it by himself, wiping a straytear from under his eye.

“Right now, I’mthe happiest ninja on this Earth, de gozaru… ♪”

There! I said it and in doing so made up a new word. “Fuckeduptedness”. There’s no need to explain the word either.

It’s a time of reflection for me because in less than three months I’ll reach my 65th birthday. It’s a weird age, it is—because it signifies the true entryway to Senior Citizenship. When you are between the ages of 60 through 64, it still sounds a bit young. 65 is that magic age. Smack between the early sixties and…seventy!

I may be getting older but I know how to rock!

And other than the usual neurotic thinking such as in 65 years from now I won’t be around—which kills me because I want to be; and the fact I am a failure in my career because I was never able to re-enter the workforce in the type of job I had in NYC, gives me a never-ending pity party. it really ain’t too bad!

…but not yet! I gotta squeeze a lotta life out first!

We—our generation is a more youthful bunch of old people. We are not our grandmothers or grandfathers either. We be cool! We are fun! We do what we want.

And They hate it!!

Who’s they? I’ll explain. They are the experts (In their own minds) who pontificate about how we are to dress. How to wear our hair. How we are to live. They make up the rules we have to follow.

And therein lies the fuckeduptedness of being old.

I’ll give some examples.

When you are old, or if someone younger feels you are old, oftentimes are spoken down to. It’s almost “old people baby talk”. For some reason people seem to think as you age you no longer hear nor can you comprehend even the simplest sentence such as “Have a pleasant day.” We may have aged but we have become smarter and wiser so stop speaking down to us. For God’s sake, I didn’t even speak that idiotic baby-talk to my children when they were babies! Just stop it!

Ugh. If any adult ever spoke to me in baby talk, he or she would have huge welt across their face!

People also have a tendency to speak LOUDER to you? Why is this? I’m the loudest person I know—please do not try to compete with my loudness or I’ll bust your eardrums! You takin’ to me? I hope not because you don’t sound to bright.

OMG!! There is NO reason to shout at me. I can hear you!!!!!!!!! Stop it!

The “anti-age” factor. This is bullshit. I want to bitch slap the marketing idiot who created that term because he or she needs to be thrown into a jail cell. Age needed to be celebrated! Many don’t make it to their fifties or older. My brother was one so don’t even get me started!

Airbrushed, photoshopped and anti-aged. Ageing is a horrific experience to be ashamed of–isn’t it?

The second you leave mommy’s love canal; you begin to age. Does anti-age mean that we should all stay a few hours old? Because that’s basically what it means? Why not pro-age? We’re happy to have those birthdays. We’ve accomplished great things. Why anti-it? Which brings me to….

The Beauty Industry. This they despise us. This industry views us as cows out to pasture.

True dat! The Beauty Industry treats us lder ladies like cows put to pasture. And these are French cows that I hung out with a few years back while hanging out in the Burgundy countryside. We got along well–we related to each other!

They will use late-teen to twenty-something models in their “anti-aging” campaigns. And worse yet, will advertise foundations, concealers, primers “made” for us and use those same young models. There’s plenty of gorgeous mature women with lines, creases and wrinkles on their faces. How come they aren’t used?

Yes. This is twenty-something Kendall Jenner. Estee Lauder, a cosmetics company that the “Mature” customer could relate to, now has to look at younger models to figure out just how the hell any makeup will look on their older skin. This is the fuckeduptedness of old!

It drives me nuts too because this is an industry that thinks it’s so “forward” by using gay men wearing make up to prove how diverse they are. No. You aren’t diverse. And neither are ads with one obligatory young white girl, one obligatory black girl, one obligatory Asian girl, one obligatory Latina and one said gay guy diverse or inclusive. Show me the seventy-year old woman of all colors and show me that old gay guy and only then will you be truly diverse.

Where the fuck is the old lady–or old man–or the physically disabled person. No. You are NOT diverse until everyone is included. Go find a wrinkled person.

They, the Village Green Fashion Policing Society: How many times? How many magazine articles? How many internet postings do we have to be tortured with when it comes to what we should and shouldn’t wear. I can’t even with this one.

I will wear my skinny jeans, my mini skirts and above-the-knee dresses. Hoop earrings will continuously remain dangling from my ear lobes. Over-the-knee boots will continue to be worn. And nobody will or should dictate how anyone should dress. Especially the older demographic.

I will continue to wear my leather pants with pointy-toed boots..

I will continue to wear my miniskirts with boots..

As an old, shriveled, wrinkled old prune of the pro-age, I’ll keep my ripped jeans thank you!

And I will wear those glittery heels.

And I’ll continue to wear my hair long. Even if it IS fake!

It saddens me to see that women my age, mid 60’s and in their 50’s and even older fall into that misconception that they need to dress like an unstylish, unattractive wallflower. Why? Why can’t a woman who is of the pro-age, boomer generation dress as wonderfully as she feels. Wait. Some women don’t feel wonderful. And it’s because many women have given up. And no wonder. Fashion magazines are splayed with clothing brands that only advertise young, nubile women in clothing that the older woman can wear and wear well. It is an absolute disgrace and one of the reasons I haven’t bought a fashion magazine in over a year. I’ve not renewed any fashion or beauty magazine and have no desire to pick one up. In fact, I’ve allowed my Allure subscription to expire because they never followed up on their promise to stop using the phrase “anti-age”.

The very last Vogue magazine I read was when Wintour placed Kim and Kanye West on the cover. If I want to read about celebrities, I’ll buy Star or People. Fashion magazines have become trash. Bring back the actual models and get rid of the celebrities. Better yet, showcase the magazine’s true demographic of the “over 40” woman!

The Corporate “They”. This is a touchy and personal one. Perhaps for you too, or someone you know. Life events happen. Some are great. Some aren’t. And somewhere along the line, many of us, regardless of the life situation, have to re-enter the workforce.

Sad but true. Due to corporate closures I’ve lost a couple of jobs and I’ve never recovered the earnings that I’m worth. Think about that one–that’s the story of almost every person over 50 who has reentered the workforce and it is shameful and sad!

Corporate America and Small Businesses do not want to hire anyone over a certain age. It’s bad enough to seek employment over 50 but to seek employment over the age of 60 is a near-impossible feat.

It’s all true.

And it sucks. It sucks because our generation has such a stellar work ethic. We come from backgrounds where we were taught how important values are. Granted, many of us aren’t technically gifted the way younger people are, but we are quick learners. The amount of information and computer skills I’ve learned from each job I’ve had is invaluable. As a whole, we are open to new ideas. We are excellent workers. We don’t call out sick on a Monday due to excessive partying over the weekends. We won’t need a day or seven off when the kids are off from school or if they are ill. We are there 100 percent.

It’s incredible because corporations get tax breaks for hiring the disabled but they don’t get anything for hiring the mature demographic. Perhaps they should, then maybe more of us would have the jobs we deserve!

They think we aren’t cool. Oh yeah. Ever get the eye-roll, side eye or smirk from someone younger? I’m sure you have. Perhaps it’s happened when you listened to the current top 40 music. Or discussing a movie or book or …. basically anything. It’s because they think we aren’t cool.

Wise words. No generation will ever be as cool!

Let me tell you something about “cool”. We are of the coolest generation ever.

That boho look? We started it back in the late 1960’s. We had the Summer of Love. Our demographic got politically involved. The Youth Movement protested. We questioned. We wore clothing that our parents disapproved of.

My favorite Beatle, George Harrison and Patti Boyd, hanging around playing guitar and smoking at the same time. Now THAT’S a feat!

Why—I remember the most beautiful pair of Madras plaid hot pants I purchased with babysitting money. I wore them to go out and my parents made me go back upstairs to change. Those were the days alright. We wore miniskirts and tattered and patched jeans. We had “head shops” where those who did not use bongs and roach clips could buy peasant tops and patchouli or ylang ylang oil.

Show me a modern-day fashion designer as cool as Mary Quant. Her iconic Mod look changed everything. And we had her! And she’s still influencing how women dress!

We had the slick cool of Jimi Hendrix and the raspy cool of Janice Joplin. I do not think there is anyone currently in the music industry as cool or as talented as they were. I’m biased but it’s true.

The sad thing is that she never got the chance to pro-age..

….and neither did Jimi. That’s anti-aging. They never made it to pro-age.

We danced.

And dance we did!

We partied.

And partied hearty, I might add. Booge. Oogie. Oogie!

We enjoyed life. And we still do those things. It’s just that we do them at a more measured pace!

And at her age, she can light up whenever she wants!

And therein lies the fuckeduptedness of old. It’s not how we perceive ourselves it is how they perceive us. And as pro-agers rather than anti-agers, maybe it’s time to start a new movement!

Others see me as the figure on the left. An old, grumpy, unstylish old woman who should be thrown to pasture. I see me as I am on the right. Stylish, pro-aging, and only grumpy when I’m in rush-hour traffic!
