Sukiyaki Western Django by Takashi Miike

In 2007, director Takashi Miike released the film Sukiyaki Western Django. This movie combined the essence of Japanese culture with the Western genre, following the trend of Spaghetti Westerns that became a global sensation after Akira Kurosawa's Yojimbo was adapted into a Western as A Fistful of Dollars. Despite most characters being Japanese, they all speak English, with Japanese dialogue appearing only twice. The film features a remarkably lavish cast, though some seemed to struggle with their acting, perhaps due to the challenge of performing in English. While the movie might aim for a Western atmosphere and international appeal by using English, I couldn't help but think that having the actors perform in Japanese with English or other language subtitles might have been a better choice. In short, it felt like an extravagant farce with a luxurious cast, complete with comedic moments and even a chabudai flipping scene. However, the top-notch cast performed the funny scenes with sincerity, and combined with the power of the action scenes and the elaborate costumes and sets, it was still enjoyable. But, I wonder if people unfamiliar with these actors would still find it entertaining.

One of the most memorable aspects was undoubtedly Minamoto no Yoshitsune, who, wielding a Japanese sword and handling guns stylishly, exuded charisma in every scene. As a fan of him as the actual historical figure, I was satisfied with Yoshitsune's portrayal, though the rape scene was not good though. In contrast, the leader of the Taira clan, Taira no Kiyomori, who adopts the name Henry, uses his subordinates as shields and behaves chaotically. Shigemori, who faithfully accompanies him and affectionately calls him Henry, is adorable. Also, Bloody Benten who is Akira's mother and Heihachi’s grandmother and has a large tattoo of Benten on her body is incredibly strong and beautiful. The scenes depicting the sorrow of Heihachi's mother, Shizuka, through dance and her enchanting performances were also excellent. All of the characters including the insane Yoichi and the sheriff, were very well-defined, and the actors truly embodied them, which was impressive. Perhaps because of this, the protagonist, the gunman, while cool, seemed slightly overshadowed. Quentin Tarantino's portrayal as the excessively meticulous uncle of seasoning and ingredients for sukiyaki was quite amusing. He came across as an anime enthusiast, hence the name Akira for his son, which was a nice touch. Akira seemed like a decent guy, and I wished we could've seen more of him. However, it was surprising to see someone like Shun Oguri used for such a fleeting role, and famous supporting actors appearing in minor roles like collapsing with bullet holes in his stomach. The use of the space created by the bullet hole was an amusing directorial choice. Nonetheless, it seemed like everyone had an extraordinary vitality; even when they suffered fatal injuries, they didn't immediately fall or die, which added a humorous element to several scenes.

The backgrounds that appear in the early and middle parts of the film give off a distinctively set-like vibe, over-the-top sound effects, anime-style inserts, and manga-like editing were also striking. While the storyline itself was somewhat typical, with no major twists, the outstanding performances and intense action made it immensely enjoyable. The juxtaposition of the red symbolizing the Taira clan, stained with blood, and the white snow symbolizing the Minamoto clan, along with the red and white flowers representing love blooming amidst it, was beautiful. The scene where a baby, Heihachi, emerges from these flowers is particularly memorable. Also, the confession scene where Toshio confesses his love for Ruriko, not as Bloody Benten but herself, and the scene where the sheriff falls with the crucifix were also impactful. If possible, I'd love to watch it again with Japanese subtitles.

I don't mind spiders. I would have a problem if an animal or insect has been venomous, since I would not want me or my dog to be poisoned by venomous creatures. But there's rarely ever poisonous creatures in my town. So I don't have to worry too much about being bitten either.

I might have to say black widow spider might be my favorite spider so that probably isn't surprising. And not because of Scarlett Johansson either! I am not a fan of her. Widows represent female empowerment.

Black widows spiders, and maybe butterflies, would be some of these insects I like. That I know of. Because no other insects come to mind.

Honestly? I have mixed feelings about snakes. Like.. I know, I know... I know that it is a part of the animal kingdom where one animals would eat another animal. But I never want to see that. I do know about how that works. But I never want to see that part of nature. So that reason is why I'm not exactly fond of snakes. Snakes could actually eat other animals and even humans whole. I would be considered a snack to so many snakes, and my dog too (since she's only a yochan breed so she is a small dog too). I think that might be my reason why I hate snakes.

A part of me is still iffy about Cobra and even the Mugen gang having been associated with snakes as the animal motifs. Despite being very interested in the whole ouroboros aspect of the Mugen gang though.

I don't know? I don't pay attention to superstitions that much so I just can't comment on that. I know just very little information about these superstitions... Superstitions in general. I'm still annoyed about how a black cats are rarely taken in by people because of that superstition is ridiculous to me. And I will just fight people over that superstition too.

And I will really judge people for not taking care of black cats either.

Personally... I can't imagine Hyuga and Kato as superstitious. But you had a similar thought to me about that. Because they're traditional as they are, they might have more traditional beliefs and ideals, whether or not those two are actually superstitious. But that's just my opinion.

And to add on to traditions. Red is traditionally a Japanese color, only because red represents power in Japanese cultures. And the flag too.

Drinking wine in the afternoon? Seems weird to me. Like.. I just would be unusual in my opinion. I would be fine with drinking during the day for some events, or something, but just drinking during the day really does seem unusual to me for some reason. So I'm not really sure why.

Yeah... I knew that champagne and white wine were different types of alcohols. I had champagne once before at a baby shower. But I'm not really sure why I can't remember the drink? I might have to try again - if there is ever an opportunity to drink champagne. And, I'd never had white wine, so I can't comment on that. But if I'm lucky.. I try avoiding events like weddings, receptions, baby showers, any of the events I'm never able to tolerate. Rocky would be disappointed in me about this.

Whiskey flavored ice cream? That's weird. I don't like pina coladas but that one makes more sense to me because of the ingredients that do actually make this drink could also be used for some ice cream flavor.

When I am overly heated, I do sweat a lot sometimes... So I know how that is. Especially during my teenage years. I sweated way too much.

I've never been fond of found footage movies... Those are the movies where it seems like people are recording the story as if it were on any video cameras or phones? I hate those movies. That bothers me very much. Trying to watch the movie with cameras shaking around is no.

I've seen some of the Paranormal Activity franchise and I've also seen some of the VHS franchise but I haven't seen the newer movies yet.. I can't comment about the newer movies. I've seen Quarantine before.

What about #Awake? I've seen the American version. Apparently I did not know that it was a remake from a Korean zombie movie, so I may have to watch the Korean version soon too. Because I'm curious now.

please... the jounouchi parents divorce headcanons... [eyes emoji] (if you wanna)

caveat before i dive into this that these are just speculations and given the LACK of information we have about both jounouchi sr and jounouchi's mom, a lot of things are possible! this is all kind of like... how i'd lay out certain relationships and feelings if i ever decide to explore jounouchi's family dynamics in depth in a fic. also this is mostly about jounouchi’s mom because when it comes to my favorite fictional characters, i love building their moms into real people, especially the moms that are offscreen, nameless, or dead; fictional fathers tend to get better development or carry more narrative weight.

but for starters i’ve kind of settled on the idea that jounouchi sr. fought for custody of specifically jounouchi during the divorce. jounouchi has a lot of specific ideas about manliness and what it means to be a man (including some very misogynistic ideas) and given that he's been living with his dad for six years, it makes sense to me that he got these ideas FROM his dad. so i see jounouchi sr. going “boys should be raised by their fathers” 1) because he truly believes this and 2) because he wanted to punish jou’s mom for having the nerve to leave/divorce him. in this context, losing custody over jounouchi is like... the battle his mom lost in the war she won.

i know that this adds some extra villainy/spitefulness to jounouchi sr. and takes some of the blame off mom, but in this situation, she feels guilt and strong regret over having to leave her son with her ex-husband, and tries to do right by him whenever she can. and of course jounouchi is allowed to experience a full range of conflicting emotions towards her, including both love AND anger, resentment AND hope.

it’s canon that jounouchi and shizuka see each other now and then, before he got too busy (i’m assuming with school and work), and that shizuka has some sense of what their dad is like - for example, in the manga, she tells jounouchi NOT to tell their dad about the videotape she sends him. so: i think jounouchi does see his mom now and then, but he struggles with feelings of abandonment and resentment (like, "why didn't you fight harder for me? why did you leave me here?") and at the same time he wants her to like him and be proud of him. 

multiple things can be happening in this relationship: jounouchi wants his mom to see how he's succeeding and know he's doing well both to assuage her guilt - "see, i turned out fine, you don't need to feel bad" - and be a little spiteful about it: "you left me behind, i don't need you. if you don’t want me, then i don’t want you." waffling between rebellious/pushing her away, and having hope for a good relationship with her, while also struggling to understand what IS or ISN’T her fault (as opposed to jou sr.’s fault, for example.) and, of course, at the age of 16, all of these feelings are intense and raw.

Ah, so this is Tumblr... I'm glad to finally catch a Q and A session with these fellows! So, how to start this... Souji, Shizuka, what would the both of you do if or when the Shinsengumi somehow happens to disband or stop its operations? Do you have any plans for a future outside of the Shinsengumi? I'd like to ask the same thing for Hijikata, so he can answer in Kyoto :)

In Edo:

“The Shinsengumi’s not going to disband,” Souji says. “And if it is, it’s not going to happen any time soon. But, say, if it were to happen, we’d go back to Edo. Kondou-san hasn’t officially named me the heir of Shieiken yet, but that much is pretty much a given.” He glances out of the corner of his eyes at Shizuka and Ryota. “I’ll be the master of Shieikan Hall.”

“Or,” Shizuka says as she hands Ryota over to Souji. “I can open a clinic. I know we’d definitely be able to make a living that way. Matsumoto-sensei is the official doctor of the Shogun and I know he speaks highly of my skills. My reputation as an excellent doctor is well-known on the streets of Kyoto and in the court. I’ll have connections I’ll be able to make use of.”

In Kyoto:

“Disband?” Hijikata says with a snort. “Not under my watch. I’ll follow Kondou-san and our dreams until the day I die.”

Hi there! I saw that you translated Eigyou Nika (THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!) and I thought I ask that there's a great manga also from Kei Kanai called Kyoudai no Rule, it's reeeaaally great but it has been abandoned for YEARS :( 3 chs has been translated and I think there's only 2 chs left. Would you up for it after you finish E.N.? I know there are many mangas to translate but it's so frustrating that it has been left unfinished :( Pretty Please!!! I'd love you forever!!! Thank you for your thanks! ^^ As a big fan of Kanai Kei’s works, it’s really sad that stories like Kyoudai no Rule and the 2nd volume of Kyouju to Shitsuji no Shizuka na Seikatsu have been discontinued. And it was Eigyou Nika (thank you Starry Sky Scans for chap 1 & 2) that sparked my love for her works so much that I told myself that I really wanted to translate it

To be very honest, I created MofuMofu or DIE Scans, for the sole intention of Eigyou Nika only (that’s why our group name was from Toujou’s childish outburst in chap 2) But personally, after doing 3 chapters, I would like to do more of Kanai Kei’s works after Eigyou Nika, such as her upcoming new work: A Job Unsuitable for Love, and the ones mentioned above

However, the issue is finding for people to help with the process, especially cleaners (taking into consideration if the raws are already readily available).

Cleaning actually takes quite a long time in comparison to the other ‘jobs’. And Kanai Kei loves to write her words on a background that’s not completely white or on the characters themselves which requires detailed editing and redrawing. And calling out for people to help is a big challenge because like most groups, they rarely get anyone or none at all.

But nothing’s set in stone yet :) If any new information comes about, we’ll be sure to give everyone an update! For now, we want to focus on giving Eigyou Nika our everything (special chapters and whatnot) When we are done with it, then we’ll see the direction our group will take from there :D Do look forward to more!

Ah, sad... but if it's final for you... can I ask the next few details of the story? Like what happens next? I'd at least like to know how everyone will end up and how it will be for Shizuka and Souji in the end

Starting off from where the original MS leaves off, the Shinsengumi will still be outmatched in the Battle of Toba-Fushimi. Historically, the Choshu had a Gatling gun; there’s nothing Shizuka can do about that. The retreat from Kyoto will follow Hijikata’s route in-game. Yamazaki will die from his injuries and Hijikata will become a rasetsu while fighting Kazama. Inoue will die while protecting Chizuru. The Shinsengumi will be forced to retreat to Osaka before following the Shogun to Edo.

Once the Shinsengumi retreats to Edo, Nagakura will argue with Kondou. The two will be unable to see eye to eye, resulting in Nagakura and Harada leaving the Shinsengumi. This will be the last time Shizuka will see Harada because Harada will die off screen (he gets shot during the Battle of Ueno and dies two days after receiving the injury). Also while in Edo, Shizuka uses her English to help Hijikata obtain newer breech-loading rifles.

When the Shinsengumi, now renamed the Koyochinbutai leave to suppress the uprisings in Kofu,  Okita and Heisuke will be forced to stay behind in Edo to recover under Shizuka and Matsumoto. This is the last time Shizuka will ever see Kondou and Sannan again. Kondou will die the same way he does in all the other routes, beheaded at his execution. Sannan will die helping Chizuru and Hijikata stop the Kodo and an army of rasetsu. Saito will do what he did historically and stay behind to fight with Aizu. Saito will not die in battle.

As for Shizuka and Okita, when Okita recovers enough, they will leave Heisuke behind in Edo, due to Heisuke’s still recovering arm, to rejoin the Koyochinbutai. Along the way, Kaoru will harass them with his goal of capturing Shizuka as the Higanbana before attempting to go after Chizuru in hopes of using the power of the Higanbana to his advantage. It should be noted that Kaoru does not know that the person born as the Higanbana doesn’t really have supernatural strengths and only has knowledge of the future because the Higanbana is actually from the future. He doesn’t know that Shizuka’s skillset will be fairly useless to him. It is in this encounter Kaoru will tell the couple the news about Kondou’s execution in hopes of unbalancing them enough to give himself an advantage in the fight.

In a scuffle with Kaoru, Okita and Shizuka get separated, leaving Shizuka to face Kaoru alone. Shizuka will end up killing Karou with careful planning.

Remember when Shizuka’s kanzashi was broken in a scuffle before with Karou? Kondou is the one who gets it repaired for her, except when Kondou has it repaired for her, he changes the model of it. Instead of the kanzashi having brass prongs to secure it into the hair, Kondou changes it to the self-defence model that can be used to stab (historically, some hairpins were designed to be like small daggers), out of concern for the constant trouble Shizuka gets in and it saves her life.

When Shizuka gets disarmed by Karou, she fakes complete defeat until Kaoru gets close enough for her to stab him in the heart. The flowers of the kanzashi are stained red from this point on. Eventually, Okita will find Shizuka again. Both change their goals from rejoining the Koyochinbutai to finding Hijikata to question him about Kondou’s death.

They will eventually catch up to Hijikata and Chizuru before the Koyochinbutai set sail for Ezo. The rest of that scene will closely follow Okita’s in-game route where he punches Hijikata and officially leaves since Kondou is no longer there. With his family now his top priority, Okita takes Shizuka back to Edo.

In the epilogue, the Okita family, plus Heisuke, lives in Edo (now named Tokyo) at Shieikan with Tsune and Tamako after the majority of the dojo gets converted into a clinic. Hijikata and Chizuru will be married and be living in Ezo. Okita will be working as part of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department (which Saito will eventually join in 1874). Then, one day, Shizuka will run into Nagakura at the market by sheer chance and bring him home like a stray.
