They all took it to their advantage too since Shenzi is already running into the direction where Max is forced to flee while and then you see Ed also running a bit ahead so Max cannot escape from behind.

Max finally breaks the silence of his new daily routine: sunbathing on a rock in the morning. This time, with his nephew at his side. As he reaches for a nearby grub, a sense of gratitude washes over him. This place has certainly brought him a feeling of comfort Max never dreamed possible. Of course, that doesn’t mean his guard was always down like that - years of living in fear does that to you.

But there was solace in rare moments like that - being able to let go of the majority of his tensions. His legs were crossed as the warmth of the sun shines upon them.

“You did good.”

His nephew certainly managed to impress him with everything that happened. Certainly not something he expected but…he’s proud.

Like. He is old and has seen some stuff. His paranoia is not without reason and he definitely does have a lot of experience. He probably saw many getting snatched up by predators.

But also.

What if he used to be a lot like Timon in his younger years - not to the point of causing injuries by accident but he feels like the guy who when he was younger got into mischief with his sister and it eventually came back to bite him. Max does try real hard to warn Timon of the dangers out there and just wants for Timon to take it seriously - all that fear comes from somewhere.

Max vc: if anyone expects us to show sympathy for hyenas that’s just laughable. Look how they treat other animals and then don’t be surprised why nobody likes them.

"But the world out there is fraught with danger!!! FRAUGHT I TELL YA!!!!“

That’s Max language for "hey I just want you to be careful and also safe okay stop putting yourself into dangerous situations“

I like that it shows us how far away Timon actually lives. And the hyenas are in the outlands and they traveled all that way to the desert. I guess they just travelled a bit for food but it also makes Max' paranoia a bit more sense since he keeps mentioning the hyenas, which means the trio has been likely in that area for quite some time.

another reason why you can tell they are just toying with him: they don't even look at him??? They look at the other chomping and go 'aw yeah'

Ohhh Max can run, but he can't hide from his sister's boop - she WILL find him. 😏

What I like is that with the way they treated him and feeling like an outsider, Timon still gathered the rest of his colony so they can live together in their new home. He understood that the majority of their behavior came from stress, because nobody was able to let go of their fear and he wanted to share what he found with his family.

I think part of that is also because of Max. His mother taking the journey to search for him is one thing, but he genuinely thought nobody besides her liked him. So seeing Max after his uncle was disappointed in him, knowing he was looking as well, taking the risk in the wide open despite the dangers that lurk in there just for him feels like it was a "oh…he does like me?“ moment.

He was entirely willing to die with his family here.

Max comes up saying he needs help because it did not work and he hears Banzai going "works for me" and sees the hyenas approaching. Instead of remaining in that hole and hiding underground, he crawls backwards despite knowing there would be no way out.

He also likely expected the worst the moment she pointed that Timon isn't there. This was not just about the tunnel trap and the heroic stunt Timon pulled. With the force of that hug he is in deep relief that they did not lose him to the hyenas.
