! Pride Month Challenge 2024 !

Well hi there, everyone! With May winding down to a close and June just around the corner, it's about that time again...the time where @jadedsunshine, @unicornaffair, and I host our yearly create-a-thon! 🥳

What's the Pride Month Challenge, you might find yourself asking? Well, this year it's a little bingo game we've put together, featuring some classic tropes. The aim of this particular game? Make something!!! Anything! Just get those creative juices a-flowin' and see if you can snag a B-I-N-G-O along the way!

This challenge is open to everyone and anyone who wants to take part, whether you know the three of us or not! We're going to be using the tag #pridemonthchallenge2024 for the stuff we create, so if you decide to join in on the fun and games, feel free to stick that tag on whatever you make, too! I don't write fic - can I still participate?

Ab. So. Lutely!!! We've done this challenge for a few years now (we've missed a year or two for weddings and other life stuff, whoops!), but in the past we've had people doodle, sketch, draw, make edits, create props or other physical art, and even curate playlists! The three of us are writers, so you're very likely to see fic or ficlets from us...but you? Oh. Oh, you can do whatever your heart desires!!!

Are there word limits/expectations for a finished product?

NO!!! :D Zero. Literally zero expectations. We aren't putting together an exchange, we aren't holding a competition, we're just trying to get the spirit of creation in the air. That's it! So whether you're writing 50 words or 5,000, whether you've made a rough sketch on a notebook page or fully lined/colored a scene, you're good! You're so good. As long as you've made something, you've earned a stamp on that bingo card, baby!!!

What if I don't want to do something fandom-y? Can it be OCs/original work?

OF COURSE!!! 100%. You don't even have to ask!!! Show the world your OCs! Tell the world about your story's worldbuilding! It's all fair game :)

What if I don't want to post what I made?

Don't sweat it! Again, this is...the farthest thing from official. This is for fun, and this is for the sake of making something. Sharing your work can be nerve-wracking - don't feel like you have to! We'd love to see you playing along with us, of course, but as long as you've made something that you're proud of, you've earned that stamp! No ifs, ands, or buts!

Is it cool if my creations aren't necessarily pride-themed?

Totally! We host this challenge during pride month because (1) it traditionally works better for the three of us than NaNoWriMo because of our schedules, and (2) we're queer creators ourselves! But if you're feeling a prompt and can't find a way to make it relevant to pride, PLEASE don't sweat it! As I've been known to say (and then get laughed at for saying), this challenge is no rules, just right, Outback Steakhouse :P

:) Really <3 Hehehe, in all seriousness, this challenge has been a fun way for us to sit down, take our minds off of life and our bigger projects and just...make some fun stuff! In our humble opinion(s), being able to point at a finished piece and say "I did that! I made that!" is its own kind of reward. The bingo board itself is really more for bragging rights ;)c Which, of course, we encourage wholeheartedly. Nothing wrong with a little bragging!!!

i love the use of human names in hetalia, because they can have such different meanings for different nations!! for younger nations like alfred, it's easy. it's a sign of closeness or endearment. he's always been "alfred f jones" the way he's always been "america", after all. but what about the older nations? denmark and norway smirking at each other over public meetings, calling each other their silly human names they have to use now to "blend in" with the humans. england learning to switch to arthur and finding that he weirdly likes it, likes the pressure it takes off his shoulders. him and france using each other's names like dennor do, at first, teasingly, like "ooh look at us pretending to be mortal little humans who haven't been fighting each other for centuries", but then it grows fonder, softer, less about the joke of "francis" and "arthur" and more about real intimacy. nations who use their names as a symbol of resistance and national pride, liet's happiness at being tolys, distinctly lithuanian, distinctly him after centuries of his language being demeaned, and then decades of it being prohibited in russia's household. nations using human names to mock and hurt each other after a betrayal, a nod to the intimacy they used to share. human names!!

Today has been raining A LOT which I find it oddly appropriate, since the moody sad weather fits perfectly. Tonight we're having a special dinner and watching Prince of Egypt, which I'm very excited for. It's kind of a long time family tradition of ours (although I am always down to watch it any time of the year). This whole weekend, in fact, we're celebrating Easter with the family 💙

i don't wanna like. complain too much especially now that the PJO show's first season is over but i do feel kind of lied to about it with how rick constantly claimed it would be super accurate and perfect unlike the movies and how he said stuff like this:

because this is literally exactly what i wanted. i wanted to see as much of the book's story as possible while also getting some fun additions or even changes when necessary (for example, one change that i really want if we ever get the final book is luke's death scene, when he asks annabeth if she loved him--this needs to either not happen, or annabeth's answer needs to be changed from "you were like a brother to me, but i didn't love you" to something that affirms that she did love him in a familial way, so that his question can't be taken as a romantic thing. maybe his wording of it should change as well.) and i also thought it's only natural that they'd have to cut less important scenes. but they changed sooo so much and the show is basically just more accurate than the movies in the sense that they go to all the right locations, fight the right monsters, and hit the right basic plot beats, but the how and why of it all is so different. the details are all off. and also imo they somehow managed to make it boring to watch, which is an even worse crime to me. honestly i don't want books i enjoy to get screen adaptations anymore. make them stage musicals on par with the lightning thief musical or just leave them alone.

i see a lot of meta about astarion being angry that no one else has come to save him earlier and that's why he was Like That in act 1, and i absolutely agree, but also i keep thinking about how his victims would be 10000x as resentful to see his relationship with tav.

imagine being one of the shy sweet ones that he lured in. imagine being fucking sebastian. you trusted him. you loved him. you thought, finally, someone really likes me for who i am. and then he brings you to a place worse than hell.

imagine being one of them, and hearing astarion tell someone else, "you're the only person i ever truly cared for". imagine suffering for so, so long for the sin of trusting a man who did everything to make you trust him, and learning that your love meant nothing to him.

he ruined your life and sent you to hell, but your love never meant anything to him and never will. because you met at the wrong time and place? or because you were too weak, not the heroic adventurer he needed to rescue him - you were never enough?

it's not astarion's fault that his victims were kept in a cage for centuries with nothing to their name but scars and never-ending hunger. but it's not the fault of the people he encountered in those 200 years either, for not saving him. how could they have known?

It's done! Have a sith!Obi-Wan, probably plotting nasty things, judging by that leer. I tidied up some thoughts on this lad's AU and figured I'd put them here under the cut, mostly to have a handy place to look them up later, and because I'm never gonna gather enough oomph to actually write a fic about it, so I might as well just headcanon-dump xD

I figured it's a bit like an Obi-Maul switch-up, with both taking the place of the other in the larger narrative: Maul's going around the galaxy with Qui-Gon grumbling mildly about picking up pathetic life forms, and Obi-Wan's been Sidious' apprentice since Palps went on vacation to Stewjon and thought "hmm, that baby over there smells like the Force and future murder".

Now, this version of Obi-Wan will grow into a being driven completely by his selfishness and hedonism. A vain and deeply greedy man, seeking the power of the dark side to own everything he finds pleasing, beautiful or satisfying in any way. And what he cannot own, he cannot bear to see in the hands of someone else.

He is terrified of his master's power, and that has kept him in line, but he's been also stewing in the rage of feeling entitled to so much, and not being free to pursue his hunger to its full extent (I'm assuming Sheev patiently cultivated this mental place for him, too, for what's more easy to manipulate than a person who Wants so much, so desperately).

The story goes mostly the same, with the switched up roles for Obi-Maul, right until the end of Phantom Menace. Obi-Wan's right about to stab Qui-Gon when he has a moment of "Huh, what a waste, though" so he just beats the shit out of them both without actually killing them, then calls Dooku going “mission, accomplished, the Jedi are neutralized, and also, I got me a souvenir :)" Dooku goes "Child, wtf, that's my old padawan“ and Obi goes “well, it's my your old Padawan now“
