Dating Kate Bishop came with its challenges.

She’s stubborn, impulsive, other descriptive synonyms that you wouldn’t put on a résumé. Loyal to a fault, a new dog mom, and as of late, an Avenger. Sort of. Kind of. Maybe?

You call her an Avenger. It makes her feel important. Ever since she had joined the team, she’d been training day in and day out, working her ass off to prove herself.

It made her more tired than usual. And more clingy. Not that you were complaining.

You love it. The cozy movie nights, the way she would hover around you as you made dinner. It was sweet, and made you feel valued and cared for.

But it had led to a few issues. Like how early your work started.

Your alarm buzzing stirs you from your slumber. Lifting your head as you yawn, you stretch over to grab it and shut it off before it wakes up your sleeping girlfriend.

However, it’s your movement that wakes her instead.

“Mmmmhh… Don’ get up…” she groans, words muffled by her pillow. You chuckle and shake your head, beginning to slide out from under the covers.

You rub sleep from your eyes, stretching in the dim light of her apartment. The floor is icy cold under your feet, and a glance outside at the weather only makes you want to stay in, make tea, and watch bad rom-coms.

But the front desk of Bishop Security is calling your name (well, more like shouting about your student debt), so you kiss Kate on the forehead and dodge her tired grabby hands.

“Go back to sleep, babe. I’ll see you tonight, m’kay?”

“Hey!” she exclaims, suddenly a lot more awake. “Get back here!” Leaping forward and winding an arm around your waist, she tugs you back onto the bed.

Tumbling backwards, you laugh and lean in, lips melding into hers as the world momentarily disappears. You part with a heavy sigh, not quite pulling away.

You furrow into her arms for a moment, relaxing into the plush comforter as rain pours down outside. The soft pitter-patter on the roof is almost enough to lull you back to sleep as Kate hums in satisfaction.

And then your backup alarm goes off.

“Alright, I’ve really gotta get up,” you groan, attempting to detangle yourself from the very determined girl. “I can’t be late for work.”

“I don’t care if you have work, its 6:00 in the fucking AM,” she protests. “I’m your boss, and I say, ‘just come back to bed’.” Sticking out her bottom lip, she pouts at you. “Please? We can take Lucky on a walk to that café you wanted to stop by.”

“Bribery? Really?” You roll your eyes, smiling nonetheless, and give in. You shoot a quick text to work calling in “sick” and slide back under the covers.

Still, you have to give Kate a bit of shit. “Don’t you have work today? Like, Avengers work?”

She nods. “Yeah, but the Avengers are reasonable, and don’t start work at 7 in the morning. I don’t have to stop by the Tower until after lunch.”

“Hmm.” You lay your head on her chest, letting tiredness overtake your senses. She runs a hand through your hair, tracing down your shoulder and swirling on your back. You shiver, yanking the blankets further up.

Kate chuckles and stops her teasing. “Goodnight, (Y/N).”

“‘Night, Kate.”

what is this? a staring contest?

that’s the only thought in your mind as you stare at the person in front of you, you raised your eyebrows. you didn’t talk to each other for three days and now he’s acting weird and he’s blocking the door so you can’t really go inside your house.

you just had dinner with kakucho like you promised three days ago, so you went home a bit late today. you’re supposed to get take-out for sanzu but you remembered that you two aren’t talking.

so, what the hell is he doing right now?

“what the fuck are you doing, akashi?”

you’re not supposed to be the one to talk first but you’re standing too long outside. he smiled, and you’re wishing that he would stop because you would too. “i’m staring at you, akashi.”

oh fuck.

“okay, and?” you answered as you raise your eyebrow, mustering all your strength to stop yourself from smiling so widely like an idiot. you can’t explain how satisfied you are right now because you two are talking again. it feels as though you’re so high up the sky. “let me in.”

sanzu chuckled and patted your head, you clicked your tongue and frowned at him. “wow, you didn’t complain when i called you akashi.”

“because it’s my surname too-“ you stopped, “just let me in, haruchiyo.”

“okay, wife.” he said and stepped aside so you could come in. he should stop calling you ‘wife’ before your heart burst.

you’re feeling all giddy but then it suddenly hit you that he likes somebody else. why, just why does it have to cross your mind right now when you’re having a moment?

sanzu noticed the change in your expression. “why?”

“nothing.” you answered and made your way to the stairs but sanzu pulled your wrist. “what?”

“eat with me? i ordered food.”

you already ate and you need to be alone because your thoughts are killing you. you could just ask him— but no, you choose to keep your mouth shut.

“i already-“

“ah. i forgot, you already ate with kakucho.” he said and lets go of you. the downhearted look in his face unexpectedly hurts more.

“i— no, uhm... i could eat again. you know i didn’t eat much anyway.” you said, “i’ll just change my clothes.”

“are you sure?” he asked and you nodded, “really really sure?”

you rolled your eyes and flicked his forehead, “yes! oh my god, just let me change. okay?”

“okay. take your time, food’s not here yet.” he said while grinning so wide, you swear his mouth will tear.

it doesn’t matter now that you’re hurting earlier because sanzu looks so happy that you’re eating with him. you sighed as you enter your room, now looking at yourself at the vanity mirror. you don’t know what else to feel, he’s acting like this to you but he says shits like he like someone else.

so, what else would you feel?

you set your thoughts aside and changed your clothes. when you came down, the food were already laid out on the table. “i ordered your favorite.”

you don’t really know what else to feel. you know you can just blurt out right here that you love him.

but instead, you smiled widely as you look at him. “i hate you, you know?”

“i know.”
