Alright so - this fic is basically done but undergoing the process of Letting It Sit so I can refine the prose on it.

It deals heavily with the 2018 WJC scandal. More under the cut for that reason.

This fic was written partially as a way to help me process the events surrounding the watershed of the 2018 WJC arrests in a more tangible way - if that makes sense? Probably doesn't. But.

I've debated publishing it, throwing it away, posting it on ao3 under anonymity. I think I threw up polls about it at some point too. I think I'm eventually going to publish it as myself, but I think I'll do that in the offseason or some time where it's likely to "disappear" into the ao3 system. I just really don't want to deal with angry ao3 comments.

One of the main reasons I'm so hesitant to post it is because it doesn't exactly take an "orthodox" approach of Rape Is Bad And We Condemn It In All Its Forms. It's more trying to grapple with the idea that someone you knew for years and years turned out to be a rapist. That they were hiding that side of them from you for years. Someone you trusted with your life committed one of the most heinous crimes known to man. And you still trust them, you still care so much about them, and you're trying to reconcile that with the fact that they ruined someone's life like that. That they could do it again. That they might already have. That you might have been complicit in it too.

It's a bit of a fucked up fic mentality-wise and I'm the first to admit it. I'll post snippets if anyone actually wants them after reading this, but I'm going to assume that's unlikely...

The state of affairs in Palestine

Israel has ordered an evacuation of northern Gaza over 24 hours. This order affects 1.1 million people. The UN believes this is completely impossible.

Israel's president has said that civilians in Gaza are complicit in Hamas' attacks.

Reminder that around 40% of Gaza's population is 14 or younger.

Egypt has closed its border to Gaza refugees.

The US state department has asked diplomats to avoid talking about ceasefires, deescalation, or an end to violence.

The Israeli Air Force claims to have already dropped around 6000 bombs on Gaza in the past week.

For context on that last stat: when the US destroyed Mosul (in a rapid intensification of its air war) it dropped around 500 bombs a week.

More than three quarters of Israelis blame the Israeli government for the attack and ensuing war, and more than half believe Netanyahu must be removed from power.

So I never really questioned Kabru and Mithrun's dynamic given what's coming up, but that episode really emphasized some stuff to me. We know already that long-lived races, particularly elves, have a tendency to dismiss the other groups as being childlike. But the sheer infantilization that everyone, and specifically Kabru, have to deal with in that episode really hammers it home.

When Kabru mentions his adoption, pretty much all of the Canaries start immediately treating him like a toddler. And we know from flashbacks in the manga that he received pretty much the same treatment from his adopter - I wouldn't say he was quite treated like a favored pet, but it's much closer to that than any kind of healthy relationship dynamic.

So when Mithrun stands up, gets in his face, looks him eye-to-eye and says: "You're plotting something. I'm going to find out what.", that? That is the first time in this scene - maybe in his life - that an elf takes Kabru seriously. Mithrun has his own thing going on, but regardless of his reasoning, he addresses Kabru as a person and an adult. As someone with complex motivations who could potentially trip him up. I don't doubt Kabru has in the past used that infantilization to his advantage, but it's blatantly obvious that he doesn't enjoy it. Who would? So Mithrun starting their relationship by treating Kabru as a peer explains a lot about their dynamic down the line, in my opinion.

Kabru doesn't have to prove his humanity, his personhood, his adulthood to this man, one of a group infamous for how they treat younger species. It must feel like one hell of a paradigm shift.

EDIT: I've seen it pointed out on this post and others that Kabru also shows Mithrun understanding and decency and sees him in a way that others haven't been and I think that's a very important parallel and good point.

in this time where people will talk about not wishing ill will on an old woman let it be known the uk government have shown nothing but vicious apathy towards pensioners, during covid and during the cost of living crisis.

boris johnson was told how pensioners were riding the bus to avoid staying at home due to the horrendous cost of heating their homes and he waved it off by talking about his implementation of the scheme that allowed pensioners free transport.

the hypocrisy is clear.
