Rainbow Baby

A/N: Hello to all of my lovely followers. Sorry, I haven’t written anything in awhile, but I just had no motivation to write, but I’m back now. I got inspired by 14x18, more specifically the ending of 14x18 which was quite vague and I’d like to expand upon it. So without any spoilers here it is. It’s quite long so maybe grab a snack before you start to read it. Also, I got a little inspiration from @cicinicole-14 and @amelliashepherds to write this one so thanks to both of you ☺️

Her day started out like any other day she’s had for the ten years or being a neurosurgeon, and yet today was different. She couldn’t pinpoint why but she felt like today was different. But she didn’t have time to dwell on it because she had a busy day attending to both of her current patients, both of which have complicated tumors which she wants to treat with the ultrasound. Though the procedure on Noah was successful, she still feels like something is wrong. She had been feeling quite exhausted the past few days and couldn’t understand why, it’s probably just from focusing in on her current patients, or could it be from something else? No way. It can’t possibly be happening to her again

Could she possibly be pregnant? Of course, it’s possible due to the multiple times that she’s slept with Owen without protection, but she certainly didn’t expect for it to happen and not this quickly. She wasn’t ready for it to happen to happen either. How was she supposed to raise a baby by herself? She didn’t want to involve Owen considering they weren’t even together anymore.

“Well the only way to know for sure is by taking a blood test,” She says to herself while leaving the attendings lounge and heading to the nearest supply closet to retrieve the supplies she needs. She keeps her head down to avoid eye contact with anyone shes passes by, but she doesn’t make it to the supply closet before running into someone. Crap. She wasn't in the mood to run into anyone. She looks up to see who she ran into and becomes less worried but still nervous.

“Everything okay Amelia? You don’t look too good,” The ever happy April Kepner says to her while making eye contact with her. “Yeah, I’m okay I was just heading to the cafeteria to get some food because I haven’t eaten in a while. Want to join me?” Amelia lies to her in the hope that she won’t ask any more questions. “Are you sure that you’re just hungry Amelia? Because you look very pale and you probably need more than food,” April replied looking at her sympathetically. “Yes, April! I’m completely fine. Do you want to have some lunch with me or not?” Amelia counters while starting to move away from April, but she quickly wraps her arm around hers and leads her back to the attendings lounge. “What are you doing? I said that I’m fine and that I just need some food. Let me go April,” Amelia pleads with her while trying to free herself from her grasp. “Alex told me to come check on you because he said that you looked tired and rundown, and honestly I’m glad I did because you clearly aren’t okay since you keep deflecting away from me and are refusing to talk about what’s wrong. So we’re going to sit here together until you start telling me what’s wrong.” April affirms while taking a seat on one of the couches and bringing Amelia with her to sit down next to her. Amelia shifts uncomfortably next to April and refuses to look at her. After a while of uncomfortable silence, Amelia starts talking.

“I think I’m pregnant, and I’m terrified, so I was headed to the supply closet to get supplies to draw my blood to confirm it until I ran into you,” Amelia states while looking at the floor. April takes a second to relay the information that she was just informed of before responding with: “I know exactly how you’re feeling right now and I understand your fear and anxiousness. When I found out that I was pregnant with Harriet, I felt like I was betraying Samuel for feeling happy, but I quickly realized that no matter what I did I wasn’t betraying him because I still love him and always will. Do you feel like you are betraying your baby by being happy about a potential new baby?” April asks Amelia while taking hold of her hands and making eye contact with her.

“Yes, I do feel like I’m betraying my unicorn baby by even thinking about having another baby. Why shouldn’t I feel like this? I don’t know what to do because Owen and I aren’t in the right place to be together let alone have a baby if I’m pregnant that is.” Amelia confesses to April. “Well, I found out that I was pregnant with Harriet after I had signed divorce papers with Jackson, on that same day. So you can’t be in a worse situation than I was in.” April responds with a hint of a laugh. Finally gaining some courage, Amelia replies to April’s statement: “Will you help me draw my blood and stay with me until the results come?” Amelia asks April while getting up from the couch that they were both seated on. “Of course that’s what friends are for. How about you wait here and I’ll go get the supplies. I’ll be back shortly.” April insists while getting up from the couch and leaving the attendings lounge in search of the necessary supplies.

As soon as April leaves and closes the door behind her, Amelia began to feel anxious almost to the point where she has to throw up, wait it’s not a feeling, she really is going to throw up. She rushes over to the garbage can just in time to empty her stomach contents in it as April re-enters the room with the supplies. “Oh my god! Amelia, you are definitely are not okay. Let me help you.” April says while helping Amelia sit back down on the couch. “It’s been happening 2-3 times a day for the past two weeks, so I’m pretty sure that I’m pregnant, but I haven’t confirmed it yet partly because I’ve been so busy with my cases but also because I’m afraid to be happy for another baby. At first, I thought it was food poisoning but I know it’s not because I’m a couple of weeks late and I’m never late,” Amelia emphasizes as she takes a seat on the couch. “Okay well it sure sounds like you’re pregnant, but let’s draw your blood and have it tested just to be sure, okay?” April replies while starting to set up the supplies. “You know how this goes, I need you to give me one of your arms with your palm facing up so I can draw your blood,” April continues to say as she begins to look for a good vein to stick the needle in. “Ouch! I hate getting my blood drawn so much,” Amelia protests as April sticks her with the needle. “Sorry! I always try to be as gentle as possible when I draw blood. I’ll try to make this quick,” April assures her as she begins drawing her blood, after a few minutes she finishes and pulls out the needle and makes sure to put a cotton ball on top of the place where she inserted the needle in case of some residual bleeding.

“Now I’ll go drop these off at the lab and wait for them there and come back when I have them. Do you want me to page anyone else to come sit with you while I’m gone? How about I page Alex to come sit with you?” April proceeds to ask while cleaning up the supplies and labelling Amelia’s blood to take it to the lab. “Yeah that’s fine,” Amelia replies with a small smile while looking up at April. “Okay I’ll page him for you, and then I’ll go drop your blood off at the lab. I shouldn’t be gone for more than 15 minutes,” April promises as she makes her way towards the door.

Moments later Alex opens the door and makes his way over to sit next to Amelia on the couch. “So was I right in thinking that Hunt knocked you up?” Alex asks her while looking at her with a smirk trying to get a smile out of her and he succeeds. “Yes, it seems like you were right about your suspicion. April took a blood sample from me and is now bringing it to the lab to be tested.” Amelia replies with a growing smile. “I’m so anxious waiting even though that I’m pretty sure that I’m pregnant, I just don’t really know how to feel right now. I feel numb,” Amelia states while looking toward Alex for a response. “You have every right to be nervous and feel numb but I have a good feeling that you’ll be fine and so will your baby,” Alex promises as he takes her hands in his. “Thank you for being here for me Alex. I really don’t know what I’d do without you,” Amelia states as she brings Alex in a for a hug letting a few stubborn tears fall down her cheeks. “Of course I’m here for you. That’s what friends are for,” Alex says as he reciprocates her hug and holds on to her tight. Alex chooses this moment to bring up a tough subject for Amelia. “So when you do find out are you going to tell Owen or are you going to wait until you know that the baby is okay? I’ll support you either way, but I just want to know what your plans are,” Alex asks gently while maintaining eye contact with her. “Honestly I don’t know what to do when I find out. Part of me wants to tell him, but the other part of me wants to keep it a secret for as long as I can,” Amelia explains to Alex hoping that he can understand her feelings. “I think that you should tell Owen as soon as you find out so he can help you through your pregnancy, after all, he is the one that got you pregnant,” Alex adds with a laugh hoping Amelia will join him, and after a moment she begins to laugh a little.

After a few more minutes of talking April comes back into the lounge holding Amelia’s results in her hands. “So the results are in. Do you want us to stay or leave?” April asks while looking at Amelia. “You can both stay. I’m probably going to freak out after I read the results, so I need both of you to be here for me,” Amelia proceeds to say while grabbing the results from April and very carefully reading them. It takes her a little longer than normal to locate the spot that the hCG was located and when she finally found it she took a deep breath and closed her eyes before reading it. The levels were quite high meaning that she was indeed pregnant. It took Amelia a moment to take in the information, and when it hit her, she began to sob holding her arms around herself in need of comfort. Alex and April took that as the sign that they should hug her and they did for the next few minutes Amelia continued to sob into both of them until they heard the door to the lounge open behind them. Alex was the first to look and see who had entered the lounge and when he realized who it was, he looked at April and nodded his head slightly toward the door signalling that they should leave Amelia alone to talk to the new occupant of the room. Amelia was confused as to why they were leaving until she turned around to lock eyes with Owen.

It took him a moment to take in the mellow atmosphere that was around them but when he did, he made his way over to Amelia and wrapped his arms around her in a tight bear hug, and she started to sob again feeling comfort in his arms. After a few minutes, he let her go and waited for her to start talking. “Okay, I just going to say it and you can leave or do whatever you want to after but I need you to hear this. I’m pregnant, and it’s yours, and I feel like this baby is going to destroy me,” Amelia informs him as she takes a step away from him. “You’re pregnant? Wow I mean I definitely didn’t expect to hear those words come out of your mouth. But I’m happy. Can I be happy about this? How are you feeling?” Owen replies to her statement and grabs her hands and holds them in his. “Honestly I’m terrified of being pregnant again. I mean why shouldn’t I be after what happened the first time. I’m so scared that something bad is going to happen with this baby and I just don’t know what to do or how to feel right now. Will you go with me to get an ultrasound done to make sure that this baby is okay?” She tearfully asks Owen as she takes out her phone to ask Arizona for a favor. “Of course I will. I will be with you every step of the way if you’ll have me. I know we aren’t together but I’m excited for this rainbow baby, and you should be too,” Owen replies as she leads him out of the lounge and up to the OB floor to get an ultrasound.

After a few moments, Amelia and Owen settled in one of the rooms on the OB floor waiting for Arizona to come. “What is taking her so long? She said she would be here in a few minutes not 35 minutes,” Amelia complains as she sits on the exam chair with Owen on her left holding her hand. “I’m sure that it’s nothing, Amelia. She’ll be here soon don’t worry,” Owen says while trying to comfort a very nervous and anxious Amelia. After a few more minutes Arizona Robbins finally appeared. “So sorry to keep the two of you waiting but another patient needed me, you know how that is,” Arizona says while trying to lighten the mood of the tense room. “Okay Amelia, if I could have you lift up your shirt so I can get a look that would be great,” Arizona suggests as she gets the ultrasound equipment set up. Amelia does as she was told and lifts her shirt enough to expose her belly. “So this will feel a little cold sorry,” Arizona announces as she squirts the gel onto Amelia’s stomach. Amelia shudders at the coolness of the gel. “Okay so it looks like you are about 8 weeks pregnant, does this sound right,” Arizona asks Amelia receiving a nod in approval she smiles. “Everything looks good, now do you want to hear the heartbeat?” Arizona asks the couple. “Of course,” They both reply simultaneously out of excitement. As soon as they heard their babies heartbeat, it was as if all was right in the world. Both Amelia and Owen began to tear up from the happiness of the moment. “Okay well if that’s all you need from me I’ll leave you two alone now. Congrats you two, I’m happy for you,” Arizona confesses as she leaves the exam room with a smile. Amelia takes a moment to wipe the gel off of her stomach.

“I know that things won’t be easy for us, but I mean it when I say that I want to be here for you Amelia. This is our rainbow baby, and I’m going to be here for you in any way that you need me to be,” Owen assures Amelia as he keeps his hold on her hands tight. “I don’t think I’ve ever heard that term before, a rainbow baby. What exactly does it mean?” Amelia queries Owen to further explain his word choice. “It’s a baby that follows the loss of a baby, like your unicorn baby. I can stop calling it that if you want me to. Just tell me what you want, and I’ll do it,” Owen professes to her while bringing one of his hands to gently caress her face, a gesture he knows that she loves. “I’m fine with you calling this baby a rainbow baby after all this baby is a miracle and should be treated as such, I’ve always loved how caring and thoughtful you are,” Amelia affirms to Owen while he brings her in for another hug. “I’m happy that we are in this together, I couldn’t do this without your support,” Amelia proceeds to say after releasing herself from Owen’s hug. “I’m starting to feel a lot less anxious now that you are here and that you are going to be here for me until this baby comes,” Amelia announces to Owen as she begins to get off of the chair and make her way to the door. “I’m glad that you are feeling less anxious. But let me be clear that I’m going to be here for you and the baby long after he or she arrives because I love you both and always will,” Owen admits to her while getting off of the stool he was previously sitting on and making his way over to her. “Well since we are being completely honest here, I love you and this rainbow baby,” Amelia replies turning around and lacing her arms around his neck and bringing him in for a short but sweet kiss. “Permission for me to take the two of you home to our house?” Owen asks her with a smile on his face. “Permission granted on one condition, when we get there I expect a backrub,” Amelia requests to Owen to which he replies: “Anything for the mother of my baby” Amelia proceeds to say “Now you may take me home, and give me a back rub which I rightfully deserve.” Owen doesn’t reply he just takes her hand in his and leads her back to their house.

Around a month ago already my passenger side car window got shattered. It's still intact, just completely spidered out. I had been on my thirty minute break from work and parked near the grass side of my apartments. My window was actually rolled down half way too. This is probably going to come off as a little dumb, but I can't think of another way to phrase it. I'm 25 y/o, a new homeowner, and I already have filed a homeowners claim for water damage. We rent an apartment at a big complex and each unit gets a carport. If you can picture it, it's just one large, covered structure with two 4'x4' wood poles separating each port.
