Gonna preface this one with a note about how we’ve done a couple plot ideas where Jack and Gabe adopt a daughter and they have a cat named Bunny. The cat in particular comes into play here, and there’s a bit of angst throughout, getting stronger toward the end. File name for this one is ‘Jack clings to ghosts.’

Jack shoots up off the bed and out of the room so fast that Gabe nearly misses the look on his face. Nearly being the keyword. His own heart constricts, and he feels a bit sick over how badly Jack took his little joke.

jack finally looks up and takes a breath, then nods. he carefully places the cat in his inside pocket, stands, and he and gabe walk silently back.

gabe stands and offers jack his hand jack takes it but doesn't let go once he's vertical and they walk back holding hands qwq

SuspiciousPopsicle - 08/02/2017 <3<3<3 Gabe is, of course, awake. He lets the silence go on for just a few minutes before deciding that it's not going to help anything.

"Can't sleep?" is a stupid question with an obvious answer, but it's something to open with. He isn't expecting much, but Jack grunts and admits that he's been having bad dreams. Neither of them had ever been terribly heavy sleepers, and SEP had only made it easier to function with less sleep. Jack's term as SC didn't do him any favors in that regard, either.

Gabe offers a few vague details about some of his own--the ones full of fire and smoke, but not the ones where he wakes up, trapped in his own rotting corpse. To his surprise, Jack starts to share. What he has to say isn't what Gabe expected.

Jack dreams about him. About their daughter. He dreams about losing them.

His voice is flat and low, rough enough that it's hard to make out some of what he says. Gabe sits still and listens carefully. Jack doesn't give him much, but the fact that he said anything at all--and the nature of what he revealed--feels weighty.

It's an exchange that could easily shatter their unspoken truce.

SuspiciousPopsicle - 08/02/2017 It takes Gabe a little while to realize where Jack's honesty is coming from. He's been drinking. Must have started when he'd closed himself up in his room. Jack had always been a drinker, but never all that heavily until he had become Strike Commander, and not alone. He wonders how long that's been going on, then realizes how stupid the question is. Someone like him--like Soldier 76--couldn't exactly drink socially.

It's worrying. Jack's self-preservation instincts were never very good. Drinking alone, he's got fewer reasons to stop, to move on.

Jack is saying something again, too low for him to have heard until he quit talking. He's apologizing, miserably, over and over again. THe anger dies down, smothered by pity.

'You wouldn't want this. I wouldn't wish it on anyone.'

'It shouldn't be you. Was always afraid I'd ruin us, but I never wanted something like that to happen to you. Never imagined...' He sags, still curled up in on himself, but strains to look back over one shoulder. 'I'm sorry, Gabe. I'd take that burden from you if I could.'

'Nothing. I-- It...hit me all at once.' His voice is thick and he presses a hand to his face. Gabe can guess at exactly what he means, because his own eyes are stinging with unshed tears. He whispers Jack's name and gathers him in close, pressing soft kisses over his face and hair as Jack slowly, slowly relaxes.

'I know you're awake, Jack.' He's too pleased that Jack was reluctant to leave.
