Update Effortlessly with a Wireless Digital Message Board
Tumblr media
Wireless electronic message board technology has currently gotten to a degree of refinement that enables it to offer meaningful and prompt communication to teams of people in a way not recognized heretofore. The cordless electronic message board incorporates clock display with somewhat minimal room for presenting message, though the constraint can be overcome via scrolling or real-time updates. Accomplishing seamless updates is in fact a crucial element of this article.
An electronic message board, cordless or hardwired, contains 1 or 2 lines of text display, formatted as 2D selections of LEDs, as well as a dedicated LED variety for presenting the current time. Operational control of the board (or boards as they might be distributed throughout the company) is handled with software program that is accessible through the firm's network. Some boards might come furnished with additional functionality such as an audio speaker for providing audio messaging or a strobe light for getting hold of the viewer's focus.
Both text (and also possibly graphics) get mapped into dot-matrix patterns that can be understood with the LEDs. The material is entered into, and managed by, the control software application. Normally there is a color combination to choose from (e.g., red, orange, or eco-friendly), and also a certain LED shade can be assigned to each line individually.
Messages can be cryptic (one word) or much longer. If a static notice is desired, displaying forever, the message has to suit the assigned room of 1 or 2 lines. Otherwise, the message must be dynamic, scrolling throughout the display at a speed marked in software application.
Specific temporal synchronization of all tools is a vital operational aspect of several institutions, from institutions to hospitals to production. Message boards are no exemption, and administrators count on distributors of these devices to equip a fail-safe technique for getting all instances of them in ideal synchrony. Wireless interaction makes such demand very easy to satisfy, as the boards come outfitted to receive transmitted synchronization programs from either a Global Placement Satellite system or a Network Time Procedure system.
With such systems in position the upgrading of time becomes smooth. There are also normally offered various options for displaying the time. Most of us are used to computer systems offering a host of date and time layouts, and the very same function holds right here, with possibly sixteen choices supplied in the control software application.
Modern electronic messaging has a tendency to find with a prolonged listing of features, including built-in ways to take care of emergencies. One of the most usual method is to pre-record in memory a sharp such as Lockdown! tinted red; a solitary switch then triggers the transmitter to transmit the alert to all boards (and to seem an alarm system if carried out). An unexpected emergency is dealt with utilizing a real-time message composed on the fly, with similar application.
Real-time messages gotten by each electronic board originated from the central broadcasting transmitter. The control software application that remains on the company network is set up to arrangement the transmitter as well as to program its procedure. This includes sending taped or real-time messages along with directions for just how to show them.
The control software program can appointing boards into teams and also running them in a different way from one another. Hence, one group or a bigger subset of teams can be targeted to get particular messages and/or message types, enabling boards in other teams to proceed untouched. If the different groups are spread out in as well large an area it might come to be necessary to apply repeaters so that the transmitter can get to all boards.
The reader must currently have the ability to recognize that such an installment supplies a great deal of adaptability in terms of positioning as well as grouping of boards, a broad collection of formatting choices, as well as independent procedure. All this allows one to upgrade flawlessly with a wireless electronic message board.

william afton x reader oneshot
summary: your father, who you love the most is also the person you been scared all of your life. meeting a not so humble man will solve it all?
warning: mentions of abuse, bullying, alcohol, and drugs. killing and nsfw-ish. minors, please kindly exit this oneshot.
Another day, another suffering. As you live, As you seek freedom, The door is always far for you too reach. That's your situation. You woke up with a bide of sweat forming in your forehead. Alarm clock ringing at its scheduled time. You get up.
You looked at your nightdesk, Reading the time as you try to adjust your eyesight.
"..Hmm..its 7." You muttered, Getting up and glancing at the window at your right, Sunrays peek into your bedroom. How beautiful must the sunrise be, Oh how you wish it was as peaceful as your life right now.
Giving yourself a bath, Tidying your bedroom as it should be, Putting a light makeup and heavy foundation between your neck and chin to try to hide those bruises your dear father gave you last Saturday. You sighed, Wondering when will it gonna end.
"God this sucks."
After setting yourself up, You grabbed a coat and went downstairs. You saw your dear father, Passed out from drinking. Three bottles can be seen in the table, One is shattered near to him. You looked at the watch, Checking the time.
"8..I still have time." Putting your workbag aside, You started cleaning up the mess your dear father did. Since your mom had filed a divorce with your father, You have been stuck with him since you we're 5.
After cleaning up the mess, You proceed to make a simple sandwich for him to eat. Oh how caring of you Y/N. Kindness.
You walked outside, Finishing those messes, Oh you wished you can clean your messed up life too. You walked into the pavement, Ignoring some few catcalls you've been reciving for almost all of your life.
You reached you workplace, Fredbear Family Diner. You looked at your handwatch again. "8:39." You walked inside, As you proceed to go at the counter, Your boss and also the Owner of the stablishment greeted you on your way.
"Oh hello there Ms. L/N. Still very earlier to come here don't you think?" The blond man smiled at you, You bowed. "Its better than to be early than late Sir. Emily." The man chuckled. "We need more workers like you Ms. L/N and please, Just call me Henry."
What a good boss he was. " I'm flattered Mr. Emily but I suppose my co-workers are working hard too."
"I suppose you are right. Anyway Ms. L/N, Ill be talking a break. My friend and also the Co-Owner of this establishment will handle this day." You nooded, Setting up the paper cups and plastic utensils to the tables.
"That is all, Take care !"
"Take care to Mr. Henry."
After leaving, You tidy up the place even though its already cleaned by the workers yesterday but you got nothing to do until 10. You swiped and clean the floor and removed the dust in the Prize Corner. Arranging the plushies at its order.
After cleaning, You heared the door bell. You turned around to see a tall brunette man, Almost 6'2 at height. Dark and Heavy eye bugs clouded around his eyes but his eye color stands out the most of it. Gray Eyes.
"Hello dear, Are you one of the workers here?" A strong british accent filled your ears, Almost capturing your heart atleast. "Y-Yes sir, May I know why are you here?" You kindly asked the man.
Deep chuckle produced from him. "My friend Emily wants me to take his work temporarily, Why so curious sweetheart?" His sultry voice finished his sentence. "Mr. Emily told me about your arrival, May I know your name sir..?" You asked once again, Trying to br polite as possible.
"William, William Afton.." You eased, Bowing at him. "Nice to meet you Sir. Afton." You moved your head up, Stretching your arms and hand for him to shake. "Its was lovely to meet you too darling."
You flushed a bit at his nickname, Wondering why is he calling you that. Erasing your thoughts you decide to offer him something. "Sir. Afton?" You asked, The man looked at your way. "Yes dearie?"
"May I ask if you would like a coffee or a tea?"
"How thoughtful of you sweetheart, Tea sounds nice but I prefer coffee right now. One sugar." The man smiled, Showing his crooked teeth. "Very well sir..." and you proceed to do what you offered.
William also proceed to the near phone and dialed a number. "Hello, This is Emiliy residence. Henry speaking!" A cheerful tone could be heared at the end of the line.
"Hello, Its me William. I wouldn't mind taking your week if you don't mind."
" Why so sudden Wil?"
"I think, I found someone who can complete and understand my needs."
Henry was beyond confusion right now but decided to play it cool. "Needs? You got an assistant Wil?" The golden man asked once again. The end of the line the man just chuckled.
"Lets just say I took a liking on one of our working Henry. I want to meet and know them more." The monotune at William's voice is quite captivating, Not to Henry atleast.
"Hmm..Its Ms. Y/N L/-"
But before Henry can finish his sentence, William dropped the call.

Filling Empty Spaces (Amy/Mitch), part 161
Mitch and Amy find an unexpected connection due to absent lovers. Set around season 11.
A/N: I didn’t have a beta for this story, so hopefully there won’t be too many grammar errors.
* * * *
Amy could feel the mattress underneath her move when someone crawled into her bed the next morning. She was half-asleep and didn’t feel like opening her eyes, but Amy still knew who it was. Her daughter adjusted her little body next to hers and pressed her nose against Amy’s cheek while cradling her mother’s face with her tiny arm.
“Mommy”, Lyndy whispered.
Amy forced herself to say something, despite being tired. “Hm-n.”
“Mommy, I’m hungry”, the little girl continued, whispering.
Amy’s body felt heavy as it still insisted on resting, but her mind was slowly starting to wake up as her brain registered what Lyndy was saying.
“It’s in the middle of the night, honey...”
“It’s morning”, Lyndy insisted.
Amy sighed and opened her eyes to prove her daughter wrong, but as the sun had lit the whole loft from the East facing windows, she realized Lyndy was right. Turning her face toward her digital clock, Amy realized it was already 9 am.
Upon taking it in, it was like Amy had been shocked as her whole body jolted suddenly. Typically she got up around 6 o’clock, but now she had slept in.
“Oh, no... Mommy must’ve forgotten to set the alarm”, Amy cursed, slowly getting up. “Let’s get you something to eat.”
Lyndy got excited and crawled down from the bed, heading toward the kitchen.
“No - teeth first”, Amy insisted even though she already felt herself rushing everything, trying to catch up with the lost time. “I’ll get the breakfast ready”, she said, gently steering Lyndy toward the bathroom while she would get her her morning cereal and some fruit.
After Lyndy disappeared to the bathroom, and Amy placed the food on the table, she went to check her phone. The screen had few notifications on display, but the one that made her stressed the most was the reminder that she would have a new client today.
“Oh, shoot...” Amy mumbled under her breath.
She had promised herself on Friday that she would do some research before the client would come to Heartland today, and optimistically that would have been on Sunday night after getting home from the Dude Ranch trip, but realistically, she had expected that to happen this morning, after she had fed the horses.
But the reality was, she was pass both of those deadlines by now.
As she was trying to rearrange her schedule, hoping someone else had gotten up to feed the horses, she heard steps coming upstairs from the barn.
“Knock knock”, said Lily’s voice. “Are you up?”
“Barely”, Amy responded, coming back to the kitchen to peel the banana for Lyndy. “I slept in”, she explained when Lily got to the upper parts of the stairs.
Lily walked pass the safety gate and smiled. “You must’ve needed that rest then.”
“I mean, I did, but I’m falling behind with everything I was supposed to do today”, Amy said, the chaotic energy just pouring out of her.
“Well, I could take Lyndy out of your hands, if that helps”, Lily offered.
Amy turned toward Lily, sighing. “Really...?”
“I mean, isn’t that’s why I’m here?” Lily reminded. “To do this do-over.”
Amy tore the banana in bits with her hands and put them on Lyndy’s plate. “Well, yeah, that’s true, but I just--”
“Don’t worry about it, Amy. You just focus on what you need to focus on”, Lily assured, walking toward her ex-daughter-in-law. “Us mothers need to support one another.”
“I know, but I feel bad for not spending enough time with Lyndy all weekend”, Amy admitted.
“How could you have? She was with me.”
“Yes, but--”
“No buts”, Lily said, shaking her head sharply as if to silence her. “I got this. -- Where’s that little munchkin, anyway?” her voice went from stern to soft as she was trying to locate Lyndy.
“She’s in the bathroom, brushing her teeth. Or probably just eating the toothpaste, if I know her at all”, Amy admitted since Lyndy was expected to brush her teeth on her own as she had to be in the other room, doing other things.
This was not the ideal way to do things, Amy knew, but sometimes you just had to compromise and hope for the best.
“I got this”, Lily said once again and walked to the bathroom.
Amy could hear them talk in the other room. While Lily had Lyndy covered, Amy used the time to make sure her appearance wouldn’t scare off the client. She quickly changed her clothes and used her fingers as a comb to brush her hair before she put on a loose braid. Filling her hands with something to eat, Amy visited the bathroom door before going downstairs.
“I’ll be in the barn office if you guys need anything”, Amy let them know.
“Okay. I think we’ll go pick some flowers after the breakfast”, Lily shared their plans. “Or how does that sound?” she then asked the girl’s opinion.
“Yes!” Lyndy triumphed.
Seeing Lily with Lyndy calmed Amy down, as if no breach of trust had ever even happened. Still, it was good that they were close by, just so she could put any doubt to rest upon seeing how well things were going with them.
“Okay. I’ll see you later, honey”, Amy said and came to kiss her hair. “Be good.”
“She always is”, Lily commented proudly. “My little angel.”
Amy then hurried downstairs and saw Georgie brushing Phoenix in the stall. “Oh, hey, you’re back!”
It seemed like maybe Georgie had been up early to feed the horses. Thankfully.
Georgie’s focus went from Phoenix to her and a smile lit her face when she saw her aunt. “Oh yeah. We got home late last night with Jade. I tried not to wake anyone up.”
“So, how was the road trip?” Amy asked, taking a bite out of a barely buttered toast. “Did you have fun?”
“Are you kidding - we had a blast!” Georgie sighed, putting the brushes away and walking Phoenix out to be saddled. “I have like millions pictures and videos on my phone that I need to show you.”
“Sounds good. Maybe later?” Amy suggested. “I need to do some work.”
Georgie nodded. “Yeah, of course.”
“Oh, and hey”, Amy remembered just as she was about to go to the barn office. She turned around and came back into Georgie’s view. “Today’s client noticed me on Instagram, so... good work, Social Media Manager.”
“Thanks”, Georgie replied, obviously flattered.
It helped Amy get into a better mood despite the rushed feeling that was occupying her head.
After the brief moment of catching up, Amy walked into the barn office, placing her phone and breakfast on the table as she sat down and opened her laptop. She went through the notes she had made about the client when booking the appointment and then did some research into the horse and the problem the owner had shared with her.
In the middle of her research, Amy realized she had not cleaned up the isolated stall for the new client horse, and so she got up and walked back to Georgie.
“Hey, could you maybe help me out with something?” Amy said, pressing her palms together, as if she would get her way better like that.
“What is it?” Georgie said, getting Phoenix’s tack on him.
“I have a new client coming in and I need to clean up the hut for the isolated stall, but I just don’t have the time. Could you... maybe do it...?” she asked hopefully.
Georgie sighed and looked at Phoenix. “I’m kind of in the middle of something.”
“I know, and I hate to ask, but I just...”
Georgie continued getting her horse ready. “I know, and I wish I could, but... its Wyatt’s birthday, and we were planning to have a picnic, and...”
Amy felt bad for making Georgie change her plans, so she nodded along as she realized this was something her niece wasn’t really willing to cancel for her.
“I get it. Don’t worry about it, I’ll... figure something out”, Amy said.
“What about Lily?” Georgie offered.
“She doesn’t know the hut or--” Amy replied, shaking her head. “Basically I would have to be there to show her everything anyway, so it wouldn’t really help me. Besides, she’s already helping me with Lyndy, so...”
Georgie nodded, feeling a little guilty about just brushing Amy off, but at the same time she had made a promise and Amy’s request had come after.
“Maybe Lisa...” Amy mumbled to herself.
“Oh, she’s at the Dude Ranch, doing some big clean-up operation. And Jack’s with her”, Georgie shared.
“So, looks like I’m on my own”, Amy finally stated.
Georgie sighed. “Maybe I could cancel--”
“No, no”, Amy shook her head. “I’ll... figure something out. You just go and enjoy your day with Wyatt. I’ll be fine.”
“Are you sure?” Georgie checked.
“Yeah, I’m sure”, Amy assured. “If I had not slept in, I wouldn’t be in this mess. So it’s my fault, my problem and I need to figure it out. -- I’ll see you later.”
“Okay. -- Come on, boy. Let’s go for a ride”, she said as she walked out of the barn with Phoenix.
Amy returned to the barn office, taking her phone from the table, wondering if Jade would be interested in doing something like that if she bribed her with few bucks. She was probably tired from the road trip and all the driving, but at the same time Amy knew her to be money oriented, so maybe it wouldn’t hurt to ask.
Before she could make any decisions, the screen lit up as a sign of someone messaging her. When Amy noticed it was a picture from Mitch, her chest warmed up.
Swiping the message open, she could see a row of poles and Mitch’s working gloves on top of one of them. “Ain’t no way Maverick’s getting out now”, he had written with the picture.
Amy smiled, not only because she was glad Maverick wasn’t in the risk of hurting himself, but also because Mitch had thought about sending her this picture with the text attached in the first place.
The guilt of knowing she had somewhat made a promise to text him today, but already realizing her whole schedule had been thrown into a garbage, she just couldn’t really see dedicating any time for that further than this moment.
Unless...
“Great news! Are you in a bigger working mode, by any chance...?” she texted back. “I might need your help. And I will make it up to you if you say yes.”
Amy’s heart raced as she saw the three little dots appear on the screen as a sign of Mitch writing something back.
“I’m listening”, he said.

Slowly blinking away the sleep from your eyes, you instantly recognize the absence of sunlight that’d normally leave you huffing and groaning by now. Your room was gloomy and dark, you realize, but it had to be daytime, as confirmed by the bland mechanical clock across from where you lay on your bed; you’ve grown accustomed to looking at it as soon as you woke up.
7:30 am, it read.
Normally, you’d be up by seven sharp in courtesy of that psychotic nurse of a friend of yours, the room would be bright and sunny too unlike now.
Plain white curtains were still over the window to your left, a few steps from your bed—it wasn’t wide, in fact, it was stupidly small considering that it was the only window in the room—but you’ve long ascertained that two people could stand together close enough and see through it comfortably.
Your days were uniformed. Your nurse would wake you up too damn early in the morning, try to radiate some happiness into you—not that you’re depressed—and then she’ll proceed with giving you your medication even though you could do it yourself, then she injects that stinging, numbing liquid in the tube that always made you feel sleepy, and lastly, she checks your vitals—your current state, your response to the treatment.
You always loathe that part the most, although you appreciate her trying to ease it away with chitter chatter. She wouldn’t pass as an actress though even if her life depended on it, she couldn’t contain what she truly felt. It was painfully easy to tell you’re getting worse by the look on her face and her frightened, disappointed eyes—and it made you feel bitter, what else did you expect, Yui?
But of course you loved her too much to actually voice that out, she’s the only one who stuck around; and even if she denies it every single time, you know she gave up her dreams to live abroad to keep you company until your last breath.
It’s neither a pro nor a con, but considering the lack of life in the room, you succumb to the emptiness, idly laying on your bed and getting stuck in a daze of nonentity as you stare up at the ceiling. It’s neither peaceful nor lonely either, it’s just reality.
Hearing fast approaching footsteps getting closer, you know it could only be Yui, and for a split second you consider locking your door, her personality would only brighten up your room which was dark and gloomy for a change, and you wanted to leave it as it is.
Maybe she’ll let you keep the curtains closed if you begged enough. Maybe.
The door, which was to your right, slides open and you sigh—here we go.
“Good morning y/n-chan!”
“Morning Yui,” you try to sound cheerful without looking at her.
“Sorry I’m late! Had to take care of some things and I have sad news for you!”
You jokingly glare at her, “what do you mean you’re late? You don’t need to be here at all every 7 in the morning like a living alarm clock. I’m still a patient y’know, need sleep and all that.”
She only chuckles at you, heading for the windows to tie your curtains.
“Can you leave them like that? I actually like it this way,” you mutter.
“Nope, let’s live in a vibrant environment shall we,” she muses, proceeding to open the curtains much to your distaste. Fortunately, even when she had them opened, the sky was covered with thick dark clouds—it would rain later on, but more importantly, your room remains bleak and lifeless.
“Why do you look so pleased?” She scowls at you and you grin. “My room reflects my withering life for a change.” It’s far too late the moment you realize you’ve said those words out loud.
You don’t even need to sit up or turn your head to look at her to know she’s crying right now. Keeping your eyes closed, you listen to her mutter curses at you and how you should cherish the time you have left.
It’s not that you’re depressed or bitter about how your life’s apparently fading away. But you’re much too realistic and you’ve long accepted that your life is fading away. There’s nothing you could do about it. You couldn’t bring yourself to be someone who appreciates every single second left or one who starts crashing out things from their bucket list either (you’re not even sure if you have one).
To you, your life is as good as gone. If it ends, it ends—it’s no big deal. And the fact that your mindset is so dull, your life painfully as monotonous, it’s not too much for you to ask for that your room should be the same. This sunless, dreary environment is greatly to your taste. Having it lit up so brightly, to add to that, Yui’s cheerful attitude, leaves you feeling like there should be more to your life than what it actually is: short and numbered.
“Said I was sorry,” you mutter, still lying on your back with closed eyes. She only sniffles, “try to lighten up the mood, will you? As I said I even have sad news.”
“Which is?”
“I’m not assigned to check on you anymore. There’s been a change in rotations with the increasing med students around.”
While it isn’t exactly sad news to you, it’s not pleasant either. It means that someone completely unknown to you would check your condition twice every single day.
“Who gets lucky enough to take care of me in your place then?”
She huffs and you could already tell she despises the person.
“A fifth-year med student. He’s such a stuck-up, smart-mouth imbecile just because he gets stupidly good grades.”
“What? Don’t tell me you fought with him already or something,” you joke.
“Duh! Why else do you think I wasn’t here early? Like he’s apparently really smart, he undermined even his previous seniors that’s why they hated him and doctors here favor him too.”
“Thank you, though I don’t really think my wits and brains are as extraordinary as you make it out to be,” eloquently says a smooth, soothing yet distant voice to your right.
Your heads turn to the tall guy who stood by your doorframe. His disinterested eyes were on Yui and you could assume she was glaring back at him because that’s just the way she is—you’re simply too preoccupied with taking in the sight of him to confirm what Yui’s facial expression is right now.
His eyes are an even shade of brown, and brown was too warm a color for them to look so cold. The absence of any apparent emotion on his facial features made him appear so unapproachable and intimidating—not that you’re intimidated—and there was something in the way he carried himself and stood so upright that makes him seem so authoritative and composed.
“You!” Yui hisses, you slowly sit up, reminded of the awkward situation you’ve been put in all because she had to talk bad about someone without closing the door first. “Nurse Sato, was it? It’s a pleasure to be of your acquaintance again. Do you mind leaving so I could tend to the patient?”
Similar to his eyes, his hair was a coper brown, and you could tell he took good care of his hair from the way it seemed so well-combed and soft. How could one even look so good and smart in a white coat? And here you thought you’ve seen enough doctors in this lifetime to be at awe from the sight of someone with the same attire, holding a similar clipboard.
“You’re an annoying little br-
“I’m older than you, Nurse Sato. And professionally, you shouldn’t be losing composure in front of a patient, let alone be raising your voice.” He is simply so blunt and cold; you’re torn between snickering at Yui for getting dissed or remaining silent because he might have something to scold you for too.
Before Yui could say anything else, you intervene. “Hey, you still have your rounds to do, okay? I’ll be fine, go do your job or something,” you chuckle a bit as she grits her teeth, glaring at Mr. Icy Med Student by the door then at you.
“Are you taking his side?”
“If that means you’ll leave, then yes, I’m taking his side,” you grin at her. She leaves with a huff, attempting to bump his shoulder but he dodges with an unamused look pointed at her.
Now that you’re alone with him, you suddenly want Yui back. Why are you feeling so awkward anyway? You’ve met tons of doctors and hospital personnel.
He closes the door behind him the moment Yui disappears, your eyes remaining focused on your hands at your lap as you hear the slow clicking of his shoes making its way to your bedside. The footsteps come to a halt, and you couldn’t tell if you were nervous because you haven’t seen much new faces for so long or because he himself just made you nervous like a natural law.
“Good Morning, I’m Shirabu Kenjirou, a fifth-year medical student and I’ll be the one to monitor and tend to you on weekdays,” he says, and as you’ve observed, he had such a soothing voice, it could only be because he was training to be a doctor and patients had to be comfortable around him.
Right, why would you not look at him? He’s just another one of many whose job is to look after you until your last day. He isn’t special. Like it was some easy feat, you finally look up at him, a part of you wishing you hadn’t as you feel your breath getting caught up in your throat upon meeting such far-off yet captivating brown eyes.
He looks at you expectantly, and you get that it was because he’s waiting for you to introduce yourself. “You already know my name,” you mutter, looking away from him. He slightly raises his brows in surprise, in fact, he does know your name already, but that was an unusual response said with an undoubtedly lifeless accent—not that he cares—he’s just observant and sharp-witted.
“Y/n L/n, is that correct?” He momentarily looks down on his clipboard although he memorized your name the first time he heard it; he’s gifted with ridiculously sharp memory too. You nod, looking outside the window, surprised that it was raining.
“Then if you don’t mind,” he says under his breath, putting down his clipboard on the table beside you before grabbing an injection and some bottled stuff you still don’t know the name of from the metallic cart by the foot of your bed. Your eyes are locked on him, injecting that stuff from the bottle seemed like a small thing to do but he still looked so focused.
The same goes for when he injects it to the tube connected to the needle in your left hand and the liquid-containing bag that serves as your daily needed life savers so that you could still walk and move around. You wince a bit, feeling the all-too familiar sting of the process.
Normally, doctors or nurses would ask you if you were okay and if it hurt when you winced like that. Not him though, and you narrow your eyes at him in curiosity. “You’re not gonna ask it?”
“Ask what?” It’s crazy how his voice does things to you you can’t quite explain, and you reason that it’s maybe because he doesn’t speak much.
“If it hurts,” you shrug. “Don’t move,” he snaps, sharp eyes finding yours before they look down on his busy hands again. Even his hands were pretty, and for a moment you wonder if they feel as nice as they look.
There’s a moment of silence before he walks away from you, checking your vitals and scribbling who knows what on his clipboard. You eye the two extra pens in his pocket, and you reckon he really is uptight with himself as he looks and acts so disciplined. Why would he need that many extra pens?
and why should you care? an inner voice asks.
He may be fixated on what he’s doing, but he could tell how intently you stared at him. Perhaps you were waiting for him to answer your question? He doesn’t want to. He’s not one to engage on conversations that are trivial—he knows better than to actually know more than what’s necessary of someone dying.
Shirabu certainly gets the vibe off you that you cared about nothing anymore, and he’s not exactly empathetic enough to actually feel sorry about your limited time alive.
Still, it was slightly getting to him how your eyes never left his figure though he never pegged himself to be easily self-conscious. “Why didn’t I ask if it hurt,” he mutters and you look at him in surprise. “I know that it hurts, and if I were to ask and you were to say yes, I wouldn’t know what to say other than meaningless encouragements. I don’t like saying things I don’t mean and I assume you don’t want to hear them either.”
“You’re right.” He looks at you from the corner of his eye for a while, you’re just staring out the window. “Do you want me to close the curtains?” He asks, but you decline and he doesn’t talk anymore after that.
“That’s it for now, thank you for your cooperation, Ms. L/n. If you ever need anything else, tell me now.” When you don’t say anything, he doesn’t spare you a second glance before he turns on his heel, about to make a leave.
“Wait,” you call, and he stops, turning around to look at you. “I’d prefer if you don’t call me miss.”
“Shall I call you mister then?”
You blink. “Is that what you call a joke?”
You could make out the slight knitting of his brows. “I was being sarcastic. It’s only professional to address you formally as you are a patient,” he strictly says, a small frown on his lips.
So you do know how to make faces, that’s the only thing on your mind as you both look at each other in silence for a mere short seconds before you speak again.
“Then is it professional to be sarcastic, Kenjirou-san?” You don’t notice the small smile on your lips but he does. Are you having a kick out of prolonging his stay in your private hospital room? He somehow dislikes it here, it made him uneasy and deep down he knows it wasn’t because of the room itself and more so because of you.
“It isn’t. My apologies, Miss L/n.”
“I said not to call me that,” you unintentionally snap. There’s no reason behind not wanting to be called that really, it just doesn’t sound right. “If you say so, y/n-san. Anything else you need?”
A grin accidentally slips out, he sounded casual and that, plus his voice, was the most pleasant thing ever. You can’t explain why you’re feeling something other than emptiness, nor are you aware that you’re somewhat giddy—you’ve far long thrown away feelings in order to survive daily with your sanity intact.
“Could I borrow a pen?” You ask him.
He sighs, stepping close to your bed and grabbing a pen from the pocket of his coat before handing it to you. You look at it for a few seconds before taking it in your own hand, your skins barely untouching but somehow, at the back of Shirabu’s mind, he ponders if your fingertips were cold to touch considering how cold your room is.
“Thanks, I’ll return it to you later.”
He nods, putting his hands in his pockets, only realizing how cold they were when he looked at yours and wondered the same. Upon much deliberation, he looks sideways, much too prideful to look at you. “Are you feeling cold?”
You could only smile, unconsciously that is, but it surprised him still. “Now that you say it, yeah, it is quite cold.”
Before you know it, he’s walked out the door and you scoff loud enough for him to hear before he closes it. “What was the point of asking me then?” You mutter under your breath, already feeling drowsy from the injected thingy.
The moment he was out of your sight, he stands still, his back leaning to your door. You confused him somehow, because he did hear your conversation with Yui. You totally struck him as someone who’s come to terms with their fate however ill, you’re not exactly depressed but you’re not what he considers a living person either.
He shakes his head, what am I saying? He’s training to be a doctor yet he thinks someone breathing isn’t living—it just doesn’t make sense. But except for the fact that it does make sense. He’s heard of your name a couple times before, nurses and med students like him preferred to be the ones in charge of you because you were neither depressed or too friendly—you didn’t take a toll on their energy, they say.
That’s entirely untrue for his case. Sure, you weren’t a talker nor were you especially gloomy for someone ill, but there’s something completely and inexplicably unusual going on from the moment you evaded his mind more than necessary. He should think about what he does after he finishes with one thing, he should think about what you need—what a patient needs.
Instead, he secretly wondered why you smiled at him so genuinely when you seemed so disconnected and disinterested with everything. Deep down, he wanted to know what was on your mind when you were staring at the rain through that small window of yours.
What’s more to that is he doesn’t know why he wasn’t as focused on the task on hand as much as he liked, was it because of your conversation? If so, at which point did he feel so compelled to ask you more—to ask you why you needed his pen?
Looking at his watch, he grits his teeth, disappointed in himself. It took him way much more time than it should for him to be done with you, and to think he prided himself for being someone efficient.
Tumblr media
The moment you wake up, your eyes land immediately on the clock. It’s a quarter past noon, and it was still raining outside, the rain only getting heavier and louder. Your room still looked as dark and bland as when you first woke up this morning and you’re thankful that the icky bright sunlight didn’t creep in while you were dozed off.
Sitting up, you finally notice the thin blanket you slept in folded neatly at the foot of your bed yet you feel so warm—at peace and relaxed even. You clutch the thick blanket over your frame, looking at it in surprise and a long forgotten feeling—happiness.
It feels weird but unknowingly, you had the urge to go out of your way and thank him for it. It is his job to do so after all, still, if you’re grateful, you’re grateful.
In honor of the thick blanket, maybe you should eat on time. You’ve been far too rebellious and uncaring, at least for today, you should be good. As you were about to pick up your tray from your bedside table, something caught your eye. There were pieces of paper beside it, the pen you borrowed atop the papers.
You tilt your head in wonder. There was surely not a single paper in sight earlier, it’s the reason why you haven’t started writing yet. It’s not like the lady assigned to give you meals suddenly decided to give you papers as well as if she knew what you were up to.
Could it be Kenjirou? Just the thought of that possibility has your lips curled up in a smile all day—as you finish your meal, as you took a bath, changed clothes, and watched television on your bed.
“Geez, you seem so happy today of all days when the weather’s bad,” Yui gives you a look, sitting on the small couch beside your bed because she was apparently on break.
“Hmm?”
“Nothing. I’m saying you’ve been so dead lately—and I meant that figuratively—despite my best efforts to lighten the mood and let some sunlight in your room. Now that the weather’s bad, your room’s dark, and that annoying Shirabu replaced me I…”
“What?” You mindlessly glance back up at the clock at the mention of his name, the fuzzy feeling back at the pit of your stomach all over again. At 7 pm, that distant smart-mouth brown-eyed medical student would walk right in again.
“I’ve never seen you look so alive, y/n.”

@16.0300-0010 Life at the Hahnestery
br`16.0300-0010 #820  Life at the Hahnestery
Dear Marla,
In those days I was really careful to hide all of my rubbering activities. When you live in the same house with someone, the chance of being discovered becomes significant — there is an increased probability that some unexpected incident might let the cat out of the bag.  I seldom put latex on much before 10 or 11pm when I was quite sure that Javin was very much asleep in his bedroom upstairs. (I could sometimes hear him snoring.) I would set two alarm clocks to get me up early to remove it and take my shower long before Javin awoke at around 7am. Not only did I desperately need this job, the longer I stayed at the Hahnastery, the more I began to really like it. I did not want to jeopardize that by having my new employer discover that I was a pervert.
In addition, Javin was turning out to be a decent person to work for.  He expected me to manage the house as if it was my own. When I asked him, for example, if I should clean the downstairs bathroom, his stock answer would always something like, “You’re the housekeeper. If this were your house, what would you do?” and leave it at that. He trusted my judgment and sense of responsibility to take care of whatever I thought needed doing. Mostly, he just wanted meals and laundry, and, even then, he was pretty laid back. (He always seemed to be very complimentary about the food I cooked for him, as well.) About the only specific things he might ask me to do now and then was to help him with some special project, such as making repairs to one of the sheds or clearing junk out of the basement. Once in a while he’d ask me take Woof with me in the truck to Beaverville to get some beer or something.  He’d often tell me that he was very satisfied with my work. He was not demanding at all.
Over the next few weeks I gradually learned how to manage Javin’s household as I became familiar with it’s requirements, rhythms and routines. I began to become increasingly adept at the fine art of shopping and menu planning a week in advance. The nearest super market was 40 miles away — if I didn’t have what I needed, I’d have to wait until the following Thursday when we made our trek into Thorpton. Adding things we needed to the weekly shopping list on the refrigerator became a matter of habit as well as necessity.
I discovered a small trove of cook books in the library. Some were quite old. Many had words like “really good’ or “too complex’ written in pencil next to various recipes by some past member of the Hahn family. I learned about his favorite foods. As I really like to explore new foods, I suggested that I try 2-3 new recipes he had never had before each week, which he gladly agreed to - he seemed to like just about everything. Occasionally, when I asked him about his preferences on how I should do some housekeeping task, he’d often just shrug his shoulders and reply that I should simply do however I would do in my own house. It became clear that he was fairly relaxed about housekeeping in general and was willing to trust my judgment.
After lunch I would put the saddle on Sarah and we would walk to the mailbox to fetch the mail. Then I would ride her to the generator grating in the stream above the waterfall to clean. (I’ll tell you more about that later in Cleaning the Grating  (190802-1157.04.br§)). Sarah and I became good friends. Sometimes in the afternoon I would take a book out to her stall or paddock and read for a while, sometimes out loud. I think she appreciated the company. Javin was right; she really was a gentle old soul.
Overall, the demands of the job were very light duty. As he had predicted when he hired me, I seldom worked much past mid-morning except for a brief flurry of activity to get dinner ready.  Javin did not want to be disturbed during the day because it interfered with his writing or the other things he worked on. Interruptions often made him lose his momentum. So, I tried not to bother him then. Our social time together began at dinner when I took my apron off.
Back when I was still with Frank, I had a similar housekeeping routine. Then too, I’d spend my mornings doing the housework and had the afternoons to “play”. I’d often go out and poked about in the shops or, maybe, went to a matinee movie by myself. Some times I would wear that bodysuit with the dildoes under my street clothes.  I have always been a ‘loner”.  I never seemed to have any close friends — most of the relationships I did have were rather superficial.
I had lots of time to myself.
During the day I pretty much had the first floor of the house to myself. Javin would be upstairs in his office most of the day working at his computer. At Noon, he came downstairs and we would have a  quick lunch together. Then he’d go back to work. I tried to avoid interrupting him at his work. Of course, if I encountered some ‘domestic’ problem or needed to know where something was, I’d have to interrupt Mr._Hahn but he never seemed annoyed. Often the problem could be resolved with a quick inquiry over the intercom.
Javin would generally quit work at around 5pm and come down to his library to smoke a joint and have a cocktail while I finished cooking dinner. I could often see that he was often exhausted by then — I think he worked pretty hard. Then, at six o’clock, I would take my apron off and we would sit down to dinner and drop our “professional” identities to become Javin and Carlee again.
I quickly settled into a routine.  I’d put on my apron as I walked out of my apartment into the main house in the morning. I was On Duty now. First on the list was to make breakfast for Javin.  Then he would head upstairs to his office to work and I’d wash the dishes and start in on the myriad other chores. At first there was a lot to do because Javin had not been very diligent in cleaning during the months before I arrived. But, over time, I eventually got all of the rooms picked up, dusted and vacuumed.
At first I thought the isolation of the place would get to me. However, as the days turned into months, I was finding that, more and more, I really liked being away from the rest of the world. There was such profound peace, quiet and beauty here. It grew into my soul. Perhaps you remember from our days in the dorm together that I had chosen Thoreau as the topic of several of the papers I had written for various classes. I never dreamed that his sentence in Walden, “my own mind is my primary source of entertainment, which never ceases to be novel” would ring so true to my new life at the Hahnastery. You might say that my deep introversion “blossomed” in ways and depth that I never expected. The deeper I went “within”, the more interesting stuff I found there which made me want to go even deeper. It “recharged my batteries”. I was becoming profoundly introverted.
It’s surprising how many people do not understand introversion.  Outgoing, extroverted folks often think of us as “anti-social” if we do not want to be with people all the time. They frequently feel that it is unhealthy to want to be alone. Some confuse it with shyness or even zenophobia. They think that there is something wrong with seeking solitude.  Extroverted people, almost by definition, look outward to other as the main source of their personal energy whereas the more introverted we are, the more we feel drained by social situations and, instead, look inward as a the main source of our vitality. Of course, everyone falls somewhere on a scale between the two. I have found that as I have grown older now, I have swung quite heavily toward  introverted side of that scale.  Neither side is right or wrong. It’s just how we are wired. They are personality traits, not
Javin often commented that the isolation of the Hahnastery continually transformed the people who lived there into “nunks”. That was his non-gender specific term for nun + monk. This also gave increased meaning to the reason why the seemingly ludicrous term “Hahnastery” had stuck and was now part of the everyday vocabulary of the people who lived there.

Idir brí is idir muir
(Between sense and between sea)
This skin is not your own. It is your mother’s, dark and silken. It is your father’s, light and rough. It is sewn together, ensnaring, drawn around blood and bones like a cloak against the chill of the constant ocean breeze.
You are born with big eyes. Round eyes. Sad eyes. You cry your whole first year, only quieting at night when your mother cradles you in her arms and croons soft songs till you fall asleep. You do not remember this. You remember the crashing of the sea against rocks, distant and yet so close it swallowed you whole. A different kind of lullaby.
You’re not sure sometimes if your mother even notices the tears that slip down her cheeks as she goes about her day. She’ll be smiling, laughing, playing and yet her cheeks will be tracked by those tears. You think there must be an ocean inside of her and she’s drowning from the inside out, slipping silently and with a smile beneath the salty waves. You hold her as close to you as you can in your heart and soul and try to keep her afloat but worry gnaws at you that you may be the one dragging her down.
You do not know your mother tongue, so you speak your father’s instead and the neighbor’s and the postman’s, though you are never taught them. “Dia dhuit,” you say and “Tapadh leat,” and “Hwyl fawr!” rolling from your mouth with ease. “Oh what a bright boy!”  they say, and “You must be so proud of him,” with a pat of your head and occasionally a piece of candy. Your father frowns at you when they’re not looking. Your mother whisper laughs to the baker in a tongue neither of you know, but that you will soon adopt as one of your own.
You wake early, too early for alarms, too early for birds to sing or tea to be brewed. The house is quiet save for the ticking of the old, old grandfather clock in the hallway and the sound of your own feet, padding across the room from your bed and climbing into the chair by the window. You watch the sea from your window, in the dim light of the moon and stars: rough waters, crashing waves, darkness so deep it engulfs everything within it. It may be too early for your house, but the the fishing boats go out before the dawn has broken, before there is a distinction between the sea and the sky. You watch as their lights drift farther and farther out till they disappear. You picture them under the waves, lanterns lighting the way and drawing in the fish like a lure. You picture them in the sky, lanterns becoming the stars and catching birds in their big nets. You fall back asleep as the dawn slowly breaks.
Your father forbids you from taking swimming lessons, from ever getting into that cold, wonderful ocean spray. Your mother purses her lips and looks away but doesn’t argue. You’re allowed on the beach under strict supervision, and any attempts to sneak closer gets a firm yell back. But… when you accidentally fall into a pool at a neighborhood party, you find that you can swim just fine. From around the rushing of water in your ears, you can hear your mother laugh and laugh and laugh.
On your 7th birthday, your mother waits to give you a present till your father is at the pub. They’d already given you some earlier, a new picture book and a stuffed deer, and you can feel that this is more important, more special. You watch in the mirror enraptured as she kneels behind you and carefully clasps a string of pearls around your neck. They’re too long, you think, hanging down onto your chest, but she promises you’ll grow into them. She doesn’t tell you to, but you keep them hidden from your father, taking them out only at night to run your fingers over the pearls, counting one two three to the rhythm of the waves. You say a silent prayer to no one in particular and fall asleep to the constant sounds of the sea.
Sometimes when your mother speaks, her mouth forms around the words awkwardly, syllables dropping like thorns, slicing her lips and drawing only blood and anguish. Her accent, so perfect and indistinguishable, falls apart into something foreign and unknown. So: you learn another language together. One of finger movements and expressions. One that is secret, just for you. Not quite a mother tongue but a mother-son tongue.
Children whisper as children do. They say your mother is a witch or a fairy and that you are a changeling. Strange, weird, off putting. They say worse things too, evil words, the words of adults passed on with malice. You feel like a changeling sometimes, not quite sure where you belong in the only place you’ve ever known. You learn to speak less around them, to hold back your voice to just the one, to make your language match theirs. But even that is too much and you bite your tongue even more, redact your vocabulary, staying quieter and quieter till you hardly talk at all. They call you dumb instead, slow, stupid. You can’t find the right balance. Maybe there never was one.
Your father keeps your hair cut short and you hate it and you hate him, passionately, privately, in that hollowed out space inside your chest. Your mother always wraps her hair before she leaves the house, and you hate that too. You like when her hair falls around her shoulders, half intricate braids and half loose curls, tamed and wild at once.
You are excited to visit the city on an overnight trip with your class, the farthest and longest you’ve ever been from home. But when you’re all herded off the bus and led down the street to the museum, you can hardly breathe. The buildings are too tall around you like you’re just an ant and the air is too hot and tastes dirty and the people passing by on foot and in cars and on bikes and buses are so loud your ears ring and you can barely make out your teachers’ voices. You feel sick, like you might just fall down on the pavement and be devoured whole by the bustle. You manage to hold yourself together though, making your feet move in a straight line beside your classmates, making yourself at least pretend to pay attention to what the teachers and guides are saying, making your face smile when they look towards you expectantly. You are already the odd one out; you do not want to be the one who ruins the trip for everyone else, even though as you walk back down the street, bombarded by the senses of the city, you feel like your insides are tearing themselves apart. Later, you stand at the window of the hotel room--your classmates are talking and laughing and wrestling behind you, enjoying the freedom from parental supervision for the night--and all you see are buildings and concrete, even the sky is blocked out by the light so there’s no stars. You rest your forehead briefly against the cool glass, and you miss the sea like a hole in your heart.
You misstep and slide down the rocky cliff face like the adults have always warned you will happen but nobody’s ever believed. For a moment, you feel weightless and unafraid, and then you crash hard. There’s blood in your mouth but you can’t spit it out. You can’t make yourself move at all. Your face is half pressed against cold pebbles, and through one eye you can see the water lapping at the shore. When you breathe, your chest aches and you’d cry out if you didn’t think it’d hurt twenty times as much. Through your blurry vision, you think you see a seal on a rock, and faintly, as if at a great distance, you think you hear it crying. And then. Nothing. You wake up in your bed, warm and dry. It still hurts but it’s dull, not immediate and stinging. Your mother is sitting beside you, her hand gently, soothingly, brushing back and forth over your head as she hums under her breath. You are lulled back to sleep easily.
For a family tree project, you have to ask your parents where they’re from. Your father was born here, same as his parents and his grandparents. Same as you. When you ask your mother, she looks away, far into the distance where a storm is brewing over the sea. She should be inside, everyone is inside but her—and you out looking for her—standing on this cliff and waiting for a tempest. “Far away,” she says, her voice almost disappearing entirely in the strong wind, the first sign of the upcoming storm. “I cannot remember its name now.” She rests a heavy hand on your shoulder and you stand there together, looking out over the water till the first raindrops start to fall. She barks out a laugh and pulls her shawl over her head before racing you back to the house. You tie, bursting through the door at the same time, soaked to the bone and smiling so hard it hurts. Your father shakes his head disapprovingly in the living room, but your mother ignores him and brings you to the kitchen to warm up. She makes her spicy tea while humming a song you don’t know, and you watch the storm rage outside the window. You don’t ask again.
You know what your name means, though you don’t know when you first realized the significance. Maybe you’ve known forever, prickling in the back of your mind until one day you opened your eyes and saw it. You’ve never asked your mother or your father who chose it, who breathed the secret curse into your name. You introduce yourself, Rónán áta orm. Little seal, little seal, seal seal seal. And you wonder who else knows, who’s pieced together your name and existence to the old legends. You watch your mother watch the sea and wonder how you could ever have not known.
Spring turns into summer, as it always has, as it always will. The sun shines more--or maybe you just notice it more without the constant cold--and flowers dot the hillsides, dancing in the sea breeze. You lay in the new green grass, watching the clouds rolling across the sky and listening to the seabirds and the crash of waves that are out of sight but never out of mind. You’re still, just breathing. In and out, in and out, in and out. You imagine roots extending, growing from your back and arms and legs, cementing you here till you’re part of the land itself. The sun sets. The moon rises with the stars. You watch and breathe and listen to the ocean till you hear your father calling. Your roots retract, and you run home with the wind at your back.
Without shoes, you can feel the shore packed hard and cold underfoot. You run to see how fast you can go, how far you can get; you think you could run around the whole island in an instant if you really wanted to, so fast people couldn’t even see you do it. When you return home, you give your mother a seashell, washed on the shore and left stranded, too high to return with the tide. She cradles it gently in one palm and lifts it to her ear, listening for a message from the sea, before placing it on the kitchen window sill beside other tokens, a piece of driftwood, a painted stone, a flower in a bottle.
Your first kiss is under the full moon, shining down brightly on the small cove you’ve all claimed as your own, far enough for privacy but close enough for safety. You are included--you have been included for a while--because exclusion is a child’s game. There are still whispers and malicious words, but they’re better cloaked now, less direct. You still don’t feel quite like you belong, but you have a place here. A difficult, treacherous place, that is extant only at the whims of others, but a place. The bonfire is shielded from the breeze by the rocks, and it’s built so big that all of you are warm despite the weather changing. There’s alcohol but you’re not drinking; you’ve seen your mother crying into glasses and your father come home late and stumbling too many times to be interested. She has been drinking, only a little but enough that, when she presses her lips to yours for a brief moment, you can taste it, sickly sweet on her breath. You sit with your feet in the cold water and the flickering flame warming your face, and you wonder if this is all life is, all that it ever will be.
When you’re eighteen, you finally find it. In your father’s shed behind a loose board, in a locked chest that you break open with a hammer, your heart beating wildly and palms sweating, lies the sealskin. It’s mottled and dark and when you pick it up, it’s still damp as if it’d just come out of the water. You cradle it close to your chest and stumble on suddenly unsteady legs to the other side of the house where your mother is working in her herb garden. When she hears you coming, she looks up with a reflexive smile that drops in shock when she realizes what you’re holding. You drop to your knees in front of her, the skin suddenly weighing too much for you to bear and she reaches out one trembling hand… but stops just short of touching it. Instead, she cups your cheek, thumb wiping along your cheekbone, and you hadn’t realized you’d been crying till now. “Take me with you,” you beg, voice broken by little gasping sobs, grasping at all your not-mother tongues to plead, “le do thoil. Os gwelwch yn dda. Mas e do thoil e. Please, please don’t leave me. I don’t belong here.”
You know how the story ends. The child finds the skin; the mother can’t resist the call of the sea; and the child is left behind, to only occasionally glimpse a familiar seal watching over them from the waves. You hate this ending with every fiber of your being. But… you know how the story begins. The father sees a beautiful woman dancing with her sisters; he steals her sealskin and hides it away so she can’t leave; and she has no choice, alone and utterly powerless, but to accept the father’s proposals. You cannot ask her to stay.
Your mother leans forward, presses her forehead to yours. “I will never,” she promises through her own tears, “leave you behind. You are a child of two worlds, and it is time you learn of that.”
This skin is your own, and, if you’re careful, it will always be your own.

Back-to-School Tips for Parents
Tumblr media
Goodbye summer, hello again school! Time for parents to gear up their kids for another year of learning. Here are some tips to help prepare your child in going back to school:
1. Set positive expectations about going to school
Whether your child is attending school for the first time or entering a new grade level, there’s always going to be first-day jitters for them. Ease their worries by telling them positive things to look forward to for the new school year. Encourage them to make friends with their new classmates, to participate in extracurricular activities, and don’t forget to remind them that their teachers are there to help them learn and grow while they are in school (they are not their enemies!) Hearing this will help change the kids’ mindset about going to school, and it will make them feel excited about it than scared.
2. Go back-to-school shopping with your kids
Time to stock up on all the necessary stationery for school: pencils/ballpens, notebooks, paper, sharpener, erasers, plastic covering for textbooks, etc. Going shopping for school supplies is one of the most exciting parts for kids in going back to school, so let them pick their preferred notebook cover and color or design of their school bag every once in a while. This could work as an instant motivational charm to pump up your kid for school. Of course, don’t forget to label all your kid’s stuff to avoid losing them.
3. Set a school-night routine
Gone are the days of summer when kids can endlessly surf the internet and sleep late at night. Now that the days are filled again with learning and homework, it is important that children know how to manage their time at home knowing they have school the next day. Avoid the waking-up early problem with your kids by building with them a habit of sleeping early every school night (say 9:00 PM, for example) so that they get enough sleep, and ensuring that the alarm clock is set. Also, make sure that all their things (backpacks and uniforms) are already prepared the night before so that morning preparations will be smooth and hassle-free. Start doing this with your child as early as June and keep it consistent throughout the whole school year.
4. Plot a study schedule to form study habits
Part of a school-night routine is setting up a study schedule. Start getting involved with your child’s academics by establishing reasonable schedules for studying at home. This could be an hour for homework, another 30 minutes for advanced study or even just recalling the lessons he/she learned on that day. This practice would help encourage them to form good study habits of their own, which would not only help avoid cramming for when they have exams but more importantly, develop their sense of personal time management at an early age.
5. Establish house rules in using digital devices during school days
Kids will surely want to get back to using their mobile phones and laptops after a whole day of learning. Of course, this is completely fine, but certain rules in using their digital devices must be established and communicated properly with them. Rules like finishing their homework first before watching TV or YouTube and setting time limits in using social media is a good start.
It is also best that you let them know that you will be keeping a close eye on their activities online to ensure that they are using technology properly and safely. This may sound too restricting for the children, so make it clear to them why this has to be done. Make them understand that as their parent, you are only looking out for them, and not really taking away their privileges and invading their personal privacy in using their tech. Remember, clear communication with your kids is the key.
No matter how ready the kids may be for school, the real challenge for them begins once they start receiving assignments, taking quizzes and exams, and studying hard to maintain good grades. They will feel tired, unconfident, unmotivated, or even pressured at times in their academics, so it is up for parents to lend a listening ear and be their cheerleaders whenever they don’t feel good academically. Most of all, remind them that as students, their goal is not to be perfect but to learn and grow and just do their very best at school and that you are always there to care for and support them along the way.
Is your child enrolled in a Quipper-partnered school? You can keep track of their academic progress online using your own account on Quipper’s Parent Portal. Right now, our Parent Portal is currently under maintenance for improvements, but we will announce when it’s ready for use again, so stay tuned for updates. :)
