"What? What do you mean? Who are you talking about--" Ruby didn't even get to finish her sentence as her green eyes spotted something falling from the clouded area. It looked big and almost like...a bomb! Eyes widened in horror as she realized it was falling straight towards the school on the other side of town. That thing was going to crush and harm so many people! Ruby didn't even hesitate to jump forward and rush off, growing quickly in the process. In her concerned and panicked mind, Ruby didn't even consider that this might be...a trap.

The terrified screams of the townsfolk filled her ear holes as giant steps were taken. A hand stretched out and successfully grabbed the large metallic object right before it could make contact with the school. A sigh of relief parted from the giant's lips but that's all she had the time for before it opened and unleashed some sort of toxic mist that quickly swarmed the area.

She tried to place her hand over her mouth in time but it was already too late. Ruby had taken the mist into her lungs and started coughing, the effects almost immediately hitting her. She stumbled back, a foot accidentally stepping and crushing one of the stores nearby. Eyelids grew incredibly heavy and not even a few seconds later Ruby was completely out of it. The giant started to fall backwards, figuring looming over the unfortunate townscape. But right before she could fall onto the stores and fallen people, large mechanical limbs had shot down from up above and wrapped themselves fully around the unconscious Ruby. It took little effort to start lifting her up into the air. And that's when he came into view from up above.

"Oh, you make this far too EASY! Eha ha ha ha ha! Already in my clutches just like that! Bring it up! Quickly! Before the other two have time to reach her!" Dr. Nefarious barked. Metallic claws came together as he peered down below from his hovering spaceship, one that easily eclipsed the entire island of Oceanside. The panicked screams of the populace all but delighted the mad doctor. Though their annihilation wouldn't happen right now as fun as that would be. No, that would come later once his current project was complete.

"Not sure if cool is the right word to use for acid rain, but each their own I guess." It was hard imagining life being easy on those few unlucky planets, or even fun. The inhabitants had to be careful whenever they dared to take a step outside of their homes. Then again, they probably had ways to avoid getting hurt by the rain, so maybe it wasn't that bad. "Maybe some day someone will find a planet will purple rain on it out there in the universe. People are always traveling where I'm from, so it's probably on a matter of- wait what the hell?"

Neftin perked his pointy ears and tiny wings up surprise when he suddenly took notice of the same thing as the young kraken. The rain... it had stopped completely, but only in the area they were in. The giant could still see the rain going strong in the distance when he used his cybernetic eye to take a look around. It was.. not a good sign. Not one bit. Something above them was blocking the rain, and it was big. Worse of... he recognized the maniacal laughter that came after Ruby spoke. It set a cold chill down his spine and made his heart pump pick up in speed faster than ever before.

Their day just went from being plain on bad to downright awful withing minutes.

"That... doesn't sound good, especially if that is who I think it is. I've only ever heard one person make that laugh before and, well... they're not good news."

Either way, he wouldn't let his fears get the better of him. If it really was who he thought it was, then he had to make sure to keep Ruby safe as long as she remained small.

WIP Wednesday (4/10) | Arsonist Neil / Firefighter Andrew AU (Part 144)

A strange sound has Andrew jolting awake and gripping his blankets to his chest. He feels his heartbeat in his throat and looks towards his bedroom door expecting the knob to start turning. But it doesn’t. Andrew blinks, of course it wouldn’t. He’s safe in his apartment, in his locked bedroom. No one can—

Zrrrrrrrt.

Oh. It’s just his phone vibrating on the nightstand.

Being an incredibly light sleeper, he generally puts his phone on ‘do not disturb’ before going to bed. Apparently he forgot after his hour-and-a-half long call with Nicky, who kept him up past his regular bedtime talking about the show and spoiling a major plotline for him. The idiot. Andrew sighs through his nose and reaches for his phone, to correct his mistake before Nicky or Aaron or Kevin have time to start a one-sided conversation.

However, as he switches off the ringer, he finds that he’s got a new message from 10. The first in days. Andrew sits the rest of the way up and rubs at his eyes to make sure he’s not imagining it. But there it is, in black and white:

10 Need to talk. Are you awake?

Now he needs to talk, huh? At… Andrew squints at the tiny clock in the corner of his screen, 3:21am? He’s got half a mind to ignore 10 and give him a taste of his own medicine. It would serve him right, firstly for freezing Andrew out and secondly for waking him in the middle of the night—

10 Andrew?

Well, if he’s going to beg.

Andrew I’m awake now. What do you want? 10 Can I call you?

Andrew’s sure he’s read that wrong. He stares at the message for a good ten seconds to be sure. The hot, friendly arsonist that he’s pissed at wants to call him on the phone at 3:22am? Who the fuck does he think he is? Why couldn’t this have waited till morning? Andrew sends his answer and immediately his phone starts vibrating again.

10 is calling.

Andrew lets it ring for a couple of seconds, just to be an ass. Then he picks up. He’s not sure what he’s expecting at this hour— an explanation for being ditched, perhaps. Or maybe an apology. But he gets silence instead.

“Hello? 10? What did you do?” Andrew croaks out. He clears his throat to scrape out the gravel. “10?”

Is this a goddamn prank? Andrew is going to—

Wait. He can hear breathing. It sounds like 10 just ran a marathon. “10, answer me or I’ll hang up.”

“I’m… I’m here,” gasps out the voice Andrew’s been daydreaming about. “Don’t hang up.”

were she more tender-hearted, sharing a space with a former enemy would be awkward. calpernia can envision a world wherein she would be quickly departing the room once the inquisitor entered - averting her eyes or quickly entering conversation with one of the others in an effort to avoid having to speak to her. luckily she is not ; she will not be driven away simply because the woman who has entered the kitchen once held calpernia's life in her very hands, thank you very much.

"inquisitor," calpernia's voice is as clear and even as always as she speaks up from the spot she has taken residence in at the corner of the room, "there is still hot water if you have come seeking such." a cup of tea is cradled in her hands and a map sprawled on the low table before her, marked in scrawling handwriting and red ink. the words are not a friendly gesture - maker forbid she is friendly - but it is not hostile. calpernia should get points for that.
