Dark Road Impressions and theories

I’m actually really excited for the World Building lore. That and the characterization. So! Let’s start from the beginning. 

Opening Scene:

This is pretty straight forward but knowing Xehanort is a ‘Destinate’ is still the coolest thing. He’s lived his life on the same sleepy island going to the same school and playing on the same island as Sora. He ‘lays like a starfish’ and dreams of something greater. That simile is minor but it’s indicative of his islander nature. Another small thing I focus in on is the mention of other surrounding islands. We know the name is plural and we know there’s a ‘main island’ but the one-off line does suggest that there’s some kind of island ecosystem which is comforting for anyone trying to develop a Destiny Islands culture. I would be crazy not to mention the inciting drive of Xehanort’s curiosity. His dreams of the Player and the desire to see his ‘friends from another life’. Well by golly that sounds a lot like reincarnation to me. That’s a very new concept to Kingdom Hearts, but not entirely far off. 

We await the fate of our Player in KHux but we can easily assume it’s an unfortunate one. But what would make the heart linger and the thought of reincarnation really does open a can of worms in terms of heart mythos. Though, it would fit rather well. Consider the Final World and the lingering, persisting hearts that land there after death. I’ve theorize that they are bound to the Final World by the hearts left behind as a sort of heart-ghost phenomenon. And then we ask what happens when hearts actually do pass on past that limbo. Hearts are a powerful thing with a lot of meaning. The idea of death concurring the heart is almost laughable, so a form of heart reincarnation would make perfect sense. Perhaps they pass on to form the ‘spark’ that a newborn heart blooms from-- since we know hearts are grown. And memories are deeply inlaid in the construction of a heart so Xehanort being haunted by these memories is very fitting. 

Scala Scenes:

So I’m guessing Xehanort lied to everyone about knowing where he came from. They simply know he is from the outside world but the fact that Eraqus floats the idea that he’s from the surrounding city to a negative means that Xehanort never confirmed or denied the theories about him. We know he’s not amnesiac bc the opening scene is a flashback. So he’s playing dumb-- why?-- probably out of curiosity after initial befuddlement. It plays into this very interesting dichotomy he’s got going on.  Think, he’s lived his life on this small world, afraid that his dreams were nothing more than that. Xehanort was hungry for something more and suddenly his prayers are answered. When he arrives at Scala-- it turns out that all of his peers are essentially the same as him. All they know is Scala. He’s the mysterious one. He’s their waypoint to a greater reality. It must be a thrilling scenario. It’s got to be fascinating, leaving little room for his own sense of awe. I might be compelled to leave my peers mystified once I gained my bearings.  That being said, a couple world building points. The surrounding spires of Scala are abandoned cities. That... is a very strange and questionable thing. It’s clearly important to the history of the world so we have to ask... why?? I’ve thought in the past that maybe they were different parallel versions of Scala but that started to hurt my brain to think of this world as a singularity but perhaps... they are ‘failed cities’? Like erected and abandoned after not working out. Ohh... what if Scala is a singularity. What if, when Brain created Scala as a final escape from the Data Worlds (and Keyblade War), there was only one scenario where he actually succeeded in carrying the Dandelions with him. What if those other cities really are different timeline’s Scala’s left abandon by the failure of those timeline’s Brain. Ohhh it worksssssssssss

Classroom Scene:

Ok when I heard there was a ‘Baldr’ I immediately though ‘oh dear Nomura grace me with that sweet sweet character design. And then story goes There are seven upperclassmen! And then I’m like GIVE ME COOL CHARACTERSSSS Okay but in all serious, I am pleased to hear that there are some grade levels in this here school. I am curious as to why the upperclassmen went missing and even more curious about the mission that Baldr was sent on. The parallels with the stray apprentice are not lost to me, but the explanation of Baldr’s sister being missing is very heart tugging for me. Ever since Lauriam became the first sibling in the KH series, I’ve been fascinated by there being blood relatives in the KH verse, only because lineage and relation has never been relevant before. You all know that familial bonds is a well of untapped potential and I can sense it coming.  It’s a rescue plot, which is very interesting. Yes, I wonder why a master would send younger students to go after the older ones but I’m gonna guess that Master’s are strapped. I am also encouraged that they make a distinction that they are in teams vs. going solo. Ehhh we’ll see. I like that they address there being multiple ways of travel and it looks like they are using the Lanes Between. With Keyblade Armorrrrrr. God, this stuff is cool. Everyone’s designs are bitchin and it is interesting that the No Heart design still has the Nobody insignia. Now....Release the keyblade vehicle designs Nomura. 

First World Visit:

Okay, this is where things get interesting. They address the conundrum of the Heartless. THANK YOU. But they address it as a mystery. Clearly the Emblem Heartless are like the projections from the BoP which is common knowledge, so we might be learning about that copy floating around. That’s our key to the mystery.  But let’s talk about world maturity!!!!!!! That’s what I’m gonna call it, cause it makes a ton of sense. Like really. I’m cackling. Because isn’t it contrived??? Worlds have this sort of newborn state where the set is there but the people aren’t? We know time moves differently but sometimes the clock doesn’t even start until a predetermined moment??? Time isn’t even flowing for the Disney Worlds until... you guessed it! Until Sora and co-visit or brush with it. Which means only ONE thing. They aren’t worlds at all. If they were Worlds, they’d be living out their backstory in some fashion relative to Xehanort, maybe not at the same pace but still to some degree. No, they exist and are frozen until it’s time for the Disney movie to start. The World isn’t a World. It’s a Story. A set narrative.  You know I talk about this is my Heart of Stories theory. Cause now we have to ask about the original worlds and what story they are playing. How equal they are to their Disney World Peers. Because they too are stories, which means the entire universe is just a story and Kingdom Hearts is literally the heart of that story. Enter the metaverse.---I’m breathing heavy. Keep the Dark Road content coming.

One of the Master's disciples who receives a copy of the Book of Prophecies. He is a reliable Keyblade Master and leader of the Union Unicornis. The Master often makes fun of his serious nature. His role is to become the new leader of the foretellers after the Master vanishes.

Good question. I honestly have no idea. It’s certainly possible. And Ira’s name is derived from the Latin word for “wrath,” which fits the theme of Saïx’s berserk state. But I still feel like we don’t even know that much about the Foretellers. Did they even have descendants? The only connection I can clearly see is between Terra and Aced, due to their Keyblades looking very similar. And Aced was upset that The MoM chose Ira over him, which was kinda similar to Eraqus choosing Aqua to be his successor over Terra. So, I always felt like there might have been a connection between Ira and Aqua. But not necessarily a bloodline connection. Maybe they’re like spiritual successors. Though maybe the connections are not even supposed to be that direct.

Datascapes

Artificial simulations based on real-world data. Inside a datascape, time can be made to loop infinitely, and the impossible becomes possible. The alternate Twilight Town that Roxas shared with Hayner, Pence, and Olette is one such world.

The other connection I strongly see with Ira is the Haunted Mansion in Twilight Town. It’s pretty likely that the mansion will be retconned to be associated with the Unicornis Union, since it has unicorns all over the place. It’s a pretty mysterious place. That mansion is the portal to the data Twilight Town. 

While beings born of darkness and those lacking hearts may find them convenient, it is dangerous for others to make much use of the corridors of darkness. Darkness erodes the heart. In search of a place to proceed with my research and planning away from prying eyes, I found myself in "Twilight Town." It is a quiet village, forgotten in the chasm between light and darkness. I situated myself in the basement of an abandoned mansion standing beyond the woods. My underground research resulted in one new discovery after another.

It is also where DiZ located his research after escaping the Realm of Darkness. Subject X is associated with this mansion as well. But I have no idea what extent Isa would have been if he had stayed Subject X. But ASoD acted like he already knew all about this mansion in KH3, so it would not surprise me at all if the apprentices or Isa had some connection to it as well. Twilight Town seems like an important place to Axel for more reasons than just the ones we know of. I kinda got the impression that it was important to him because of his past.

As a start, I have built a device that artificially creates Heartless. By recreating the conditions that spawn the Heartless naturally, I should be able to produce them artificially. This device is the culmination of all my research thus far. The machine's test run successfully created a Heartless. This may be a step toward creating a heart from nothing.

Then there’s Datascapes. Xehanort was trying to create a heart from nothing. And in KH3D, the apprentices were using the computer that was the gateway to Tron’s world, which is also a Datascape. 

Can you please tell us a little more about the series-first KH game for PC browser? Nomura: This is not a title with an emphasis on story, but we are working premises in. That said, for the first time in the series you can enjoy the content completely separately from the main series, so even beginners to the series might be able to be at ease playing it. The battling is different again from KH Re:CoM, and we are aiming for something with simple controls and flashy movements. I think customizing is important to this type of game, so we are filling it with new elements in that area.

KHUX is the game I am least knowledgeable about, since I just couldn’t get into the gameplay. I watched the cutscenes online, but I still feel like I am not that well-versed in its story/lore. Maybe the novel will help when it’s released. When KHUX was first announced (back when it was known as KHX) Nomura suggested that the game was not supposed to have an emphasis on story, and it was also supposed to be completely separate from the main series. So, I kinda ignored it, thinking the Back Cover movie would suffice. The way KHUX got so much emphasis in KH3 really caught me off-guard. It still feels like it was decided upon at the last minute.

KHX’s story was going to be connected to KH3 of course, but it sounds like playing it was not supposed to be crucial or anything. Skuld wasn’t even in the Back Cover movie, even though Ephemer was. You’d think she would be if she was supposed to be the mysterious girl everyone was looking for. From what I’ve seen its story is also very confusing. The Book of Prophecies is capable of transcribing and conjuring future events, as well as creating entire worlds filled with beings and powers that have yet to exist. Which...sounds like the Datascape. Maleficent was searching for a connection between the Book of Prophecies and the Datascape, and she wondered if the Book of Prophecies was also connected to Jiminy's Journal.

Maleficent: Yes, he shared everything with me--how to go about winning a heart over to the darkness, and, most gloriously, about the seven hearts of pure light--the ones that would grant me the power I need to conquer all worlds. However, the worlds were too complex, too much for even me to contain. It seemed I had miscalculated. Then it came to me--of course! I could go about conquering other worlds in my own manner. You do have the "data" for all the worlds, do you not? And now you will hand it over to me.

The whole concept of Datascapes feels like it was supposed to be massively important in KH3 (and probably KH0.5). Re:Coded revolves around this idea.

“There’s a road for the taking if you end our world’s aching.”

The message in Jiminy’s Journal implied that the world inside the Datascape was the world that was aching (I think?). And the glossary in KH3 mentions that in Datascapes, time can be made to loop infinitely. But none of this ever went anywhere. All of this might have been deemed way too complex by the higher-ups and it was changed at the last minute.

Maleficent: I now know that what I seek lies within these walls. Trust that I will eliminate you in good time.

In KH3, Maleficent just started randomly looking for a black box that she had no idea the location of. But in KH3D she was supposed to be looking for the data for all the worlds, and she said she knew what she wanted was specifically inside of Disney Castle. So...is the Book of Prophecies in Disney Castle? Sounds kinda like it might be. Is that why Disney Castle has the Cornerstone of Light? To protect a copy of the Book of Prophecies? And Jiminy did start off at Disney Castle when he became the royal chronicler. Disney Castle was where the portal to the Lingering Will is located. And it also had that door that led to the Timeless River. The whole plot in the Timeless River seems similar to a Datascape. Pete conjured the door to Timeless River when he wished to go back in time. Maybe Disney Castle, Radiant Garden, and Twilight Town were where a copy of the Book of Prophecies was kept. They all have Datascapes located next to a library.

;MASTERS OF LIGHT (↠kh v.)

alright so it’s pretty basic tbh.

i’ve only played the main title games (I, I, III) and have a decent understanding of the lore but I am far from solid on my knowledge so. kh verse here we go.

vera and afton are the only true keyblade masters of the group. they took their test along with renji - but there was a darkness in renji’s heart that took control and the five almost lost him to it. the darkness comes from the desperate need of revenge - he wants to avenge his parents who were lost in a first wave of heartless attacks.

naoko is soon to take her test - and she is very much expected to pass. her demeanor when battling and mastery of magic especially is something to be feared.

primula is a god damn prodigy. her and lao are training together, and thank goodness for lao for having a partner to look up to.

renji... he’s training with the rest.

they’re really just a rag tag group that jumps world to world where they’re needed - or, wherever is paying. if the munny is good, or a world is in desperate need of help, these six will be there.

in terms of weapons...

STRENGTH-FOCUSED.

afton’s keyblade is named Shadow Casul. It’s a play on his preferred ammo type, but it’s a dark, somewhat bulky weapon. dark and shadow magic is his specialty - the charm is an obsidian diamond.

renji’s keyblade is named Inazuma. His is more balanced than his cousin’s, with an emphasis on thunder magic. the charm is a bolt of lightning.

naoko’s keyblade is a little more... edgy. its name is Famine, as it’s special ability is energy siphoning. it’s dark and jagged, looking a lot like the chakrams she prefers in normal verses. at any rate, her preferred magic is also dark, and the charm looks like a sort of old-school scale. play on her original motif of blind justice and... well. long story lmao.

MAGIC-FOCUSED.

vera’s keyblade is called Esperer. it’s elegant, really, and it’s incredibly fitting for her. the emphasis on aero magic is super strong, and she’s deadly quick with it. its charm is a twinkling star.

rimu’s keyblade is named Yukianesa - renji helped her pick the name. it has crazy-strong blizzard magic and is usually cold to the touch - not that it bothers her. the charm is a shining snowflake.

finally, lao’s keyblade. people are surprised, but her specialty is fire, since it’s the easiest, most accurate projectile. her keyblade is long, light and perfect for magic. it’s name is Longshot, and the charm looks like a crosshair.

Prompt- Dense.

A proper XIV-verse story will be forthcoming, but I had been toying with the idea of writing a bit of the original Duke- i.e the Crimson Duke who was a character I created for Kingdom Hearts. Dense is the perfect prompt for him because the original Duke very much pretended to be dense nearly a hundred percent of the time. I hope people enjoy this look into the original Duke. While they’re both similar- they are very different characters. Where XIV Duke is at his core, a bit pessimistic- KH!Duke is... well... let’s just say he’s annoyingly optimistic. And will outwardly appear stupid in order to hide his true demeanor. 

Also featuring a few other characters, one of which- Loan- belongs to @painted-foothills Takes place in, obviously- Kingdom Hearts universe.

The Fissure was nearly always a silent abyss, the seven Masters scattered throughout it, statues of solitude and quiet reflection. Watching, waiting for new bearers to come of age, to be selected to help keep the balance of light and darkness. 

However some could not bear the endless monotony and sought for nothing more than to make something out of their sealed eternity. 

“Rin. Rin- Rin-” 

“...Please-”

“Rin. Do you remember what we had for our last meal?”

“Duke-”

“No, Rin, listen to me. This is important. Truly. I’ve a point I’m trying to make. I swear it. On my life- well. Not my life I suppose. Not like we have much of a life to swear on, eh?”

“Oh for-” Rin dragged a hand down his face, before ruffling his brunette locks in frustration- turning to face his dangling friend behind him, “Fine, Fine! Go on! Get on with it, so I can go back to... peacefully resting.”

The silver-haired man flashed him a beaming smile- eyes hidden beneath a dark mask as he gently flipped himself over- his red cloak pooling around his feet.  “Right. Right- so. Our last meal- you remember the apple tart we had?”

“Duke, you spent the first century blabbering on about it- so yes. I remember it. What about it?”

The Duke paused, crossing his arms- “Well. It’s just- what do you think of Aurum and Loan?”

Rin stared at him, blankly at first, then slowly his expression turned from incredulous to downright annoyance, “Aurum and Loan?! What the seven bloody hells does that have to do with an apple tart!”

“Oh, it doesn’t. I just wanted you to remember the tart because it tasted good- you were looking a bit sad there old friend. Though... now that I think about it- they shared their tart, didn’t they?”

“Of course they did!”

“What do you mean ‘of course they did’? You refused to share with me! And we are best friends, our hearts beat as one!” 

“Why would I have shared my tart with y- Look, how dense can you possibly be? And how have you just now decided to take a closer look at their relationship? After how many centuries- I mean hells- even before we were sealed away,” he paused, looking at the Duke with a mixture of confusion and annoyance, “And- you were the one who sent Loan to recruit Aurum in the first place. We always assumed you knew what would happen.” 

The Duke blinked, furrowing his brows slightly, “What ever do you mean?”

Rin sighed heavily- looking up at the swirling mass of shadows and light that surrounded them as though it held some sort of answer to his desire to not throttle the other man, “Duke. They are together. Have been for a while, far before we were ever sealed into the Fissure. I mean, surely that’s why you sent Loan to her. You even said he’d be the one! The one to finally get her on our side, to forge and wield the final keyblade! We all thought you had some foresight, that you’d knew they’d be.. you know- a match. You were utterly confident. Though... now in hindsight I realize most of your confidence comes from... the sheer fact you simply do not fear any consequences.”

“Oh. Hmm...” The Duke took a moment, fingers holding his chin as he pondered over this, “Mmm... no, no, I actually sent Loan because he was the only one left of us that hadn’t already been ceremoniously denied by her. That, and back then Loan was the weakest of us all- and so goshdarn adorable I knew Aurum couldn’t possibly be rude or mean to him like she was to the rest of us. I was utterly depending on her taking pity on him.” 

“...You-”

“Together, though? You really mean that? Oh that is wonderful news. They are a good match, I am glad they have each other. Just like you and I have each other! Do you think we should match Vellant up with someone? Or do you think she’d be upset?”

“I think I’ll find a way to seal your mouth up if you try anything you Crimson buffoon.” An airy voice floated out.

“Right. Well, Vellant’s out of the question then.” The Duke leaned forward- clapping a hand onto Rin’s shoulder, “Just you and I, old friend! Now, about those apple tarts-”

Mickey dropped down onto the ground landing on both of his two feet before then glancing around to make sure the area was clear after fending off a few Shadow Heartless but he then notices somebody familiar along the path he had just landed on before checking to make sure the coast was clear.    It seems clear.    Mickey then de-summoned his Keyblade before walking over to greet his friend. “Hiya pal! How have things been going for you?”   Mickey looked up at the other Keyblade Wielder with the occasional friendly smile as always. Mickey then glances around briefly before looking back up at him, it was a delight to see that Sora was okay in these times but he also wondered how Donald and Goofy were doing even though they always seemed to be okay under the guidance of Sora It didn’t hurt to wonder.  But that’s nothing to be worried about now because what matters is his friends are alright so its alright.

“ Didn’t really think i’d find somebody along this path! “   Mickey said as he had noticed the other person walking along the path before he then walked over before getting a good look of this fella.   Before then reaching his hand up for a handshake from the man, seeing he wasn’t one of the Heartless that liked to feed on the Darkness on People’s souls.     But that’s not anything to worry about currently anyhow.      “I’m Mickey, Mickey Mouse! ..And you are?”

Mickey resisted the urge to summon his Keyblade as maybe this encounter didn’t have to end in a big fight like most times as he sighed with timid breath.   The reason he even had the urge to summon the keyblade as he had done many times before was mainly because most of his interactions with the organization had been sort of antagonistic before Master Xehanort was finally defeated in the great Keyblade War.   Supporting the reasoning for the urge was while in his multiple adventures along with Riku as they had been either confronted by a member directly or outright ambushed on multiple encounters and even though most of the previous members had willingly left the Organization after figuring out Master Xehanort’s true intentions and had probably went back to normal lives since the old fellas defeat.. He wasn’t really sure at all.   Mickey just looked down and shook his head before looking back up at the fella before opening his mouth to say something after a long train of thought about the sometimes Arrogant fella.    “Hiya there Marluxia, never thought i’d see ya here.”

  Mickey’s usual cheerful expression suddenly changes into that of a blank’ one, just expressionless and emotionless but he probably won’t be able to keep this on for long if something makes him laugh or something.

The King started to get funny thoughts but managed to keep a still expression even though he was trying his best not to bawl’ out in laughter because of the task of “Keeping a Poker Face” for as long as he could.

Mickey suddenly appears in a flash of magical nearly-blinding white light as he wasn’t really sure where the Star Shard brought him now before he then glanced around for any Shadow Heartless before demanifesting the Keyblade that was once firmly grasped in his right hand before having a sigh of relief but he still was not sure where he was now.    Was this world enveloped by darkness?    He’d have to find out for himself for now but maybe he could see if he was able to help around here before heading back off, but he’s not sure if he should even trust using the Star Shard as he hasn’t gotten the hang of it quite yet still.

  “D’aw gosh, wonder where i ended up now?”

He was supposed to be under a mission assigned to him by his master, Yen Sid but kind of went off course accidentally.    How is he gonna explain this screw-up now?   But what was most important in this unfortunate situation though.. where was he even?

“Michael, huh?”    He was already stumped by the other him? mes? he still hasn’t figured that portion yet but this fella didn’t seem like a Heartless and they didn’t know how to speak in proper sentences except for.. a few. but the King was still gonna be cautious a little.

    “Well nice to meet ya, me-- Michael, the names Mickey! Mickey Mouse.”    He’d gently reach his hand out before grabbing onto the other mouse’s hand for a casual handshake-- although he already wanted to facepalm ( but didn’t. ) because for obvious reasons as he didn’t really know what to do in this situation and he just introduced himself to well, himself but if-- ugh its kind of a little too much for his mind but mainly because the amount of questions he wanted to storm the poor fella with but he held back on that, for now as he still held that usual cheerful smile. 

 “Gosh-- i wonder if we both have been through the same things since we are both.. y’know. eachother?? Sorry pal if im sayin’ things and its annoying you- I’m still just a little confused by this whole encounter.”
