in terms of active AUs i still poke at now and again, one day I really would like to do something with the noir mystery/crimes AU that's inspired almost exclusively by this fanart. It turns out writing mysteries is hard! ;v; But also the mystery would probably be secondary to all the character stuff. The general gist of it is that Leorio works for the city ME's office but also does some back alley doctoring on the side for extra cash, which puts him in contact with many underworld types; Kurapika is a private investigator who sometimes works alongside certain police detectives but mostly does his own thing; Mito runs a bar that's frequented by many criminals and unsavory types, but it's considered fully neutral territory and nobody (nobody) messes with her; Gon helps out in the bar when he isn't participating in underground fights for cash or sticking his nose where it doesn't belong; and Killua has the whole assassin/ex-assassin thing going on. Part of what I like about this AU is that it's peak Killua & Leorio Terrible Gremlin Siblings Hour – When Killua extricates himself from his family he's temporarily restricted to Mito's bar and specific parts of the city underworld (not even the Zoldycks want to incur the wrath of every criminal in the tristate area by messing with Mito, it's too much work) so at some point Leorio takes him in and they develop a fun brotherly dynamic. Alluka enters the scene later on as well! And there's leopika shenanigans throughout lol

my favorite thing about the mystery AU is that Mito holds so much sway in the community – it's nice that I gave myself an opening to do something that focuses on her, if the inspiration strikes me. I think everyone in the criminal underworld genuinely likes her as a person and will destroy anybody else who gives her a hard time, but she's also known to enforce her bar's neutrality with an iron fist. You're actually considered lucky if Gon's the one who throws you out, because Gon's the less scary one.

In terms of old AUs, I used to have a cyberpunk-esque sci-fi idea where Gon's an android specifically designed to appear as human as possible, to the point of tricking scans and stuff. I... truly don't remember much of it. ^^; I don't think I ever figured out a plot for it and so eventually it got scrapped. It was inspired directly by an Isaac Asimov reread and some specific episodes of Star Trek TNG, and there's a handful of elements that got adapted into my TNG AU later on (TNG!Gon isn't an android though).

i WANT to do something related to The Muderbot Diaries, but there's no real connection to be made there... alas... who knows maybe i'll keep chewing on it.

2. The A C T I O N was so awesome!!! I don’t remember if i’ve mentioned this before but I really love action-packed chapters - they’re usually my favorite ones. You wrote the fight scene so well! I also kinda sensed that maybe Shika was feeling a bit guilty for not listening to Sakura’s advice to stay together. Now she’s one arm less because of his /very rare/ lapse in judgment. Will we know more of Shika’s thoughts on this? He’s so very full of angst and distrust, I quite enjoy him twiddling his thumbs for being wrong this time.

3. Baby Kakashi and Sakura - this was a very cute image in my head. Thank you for painting such a lovely picture ❤️ I imagine toddler Kakashi imprinting on Sakura and following her around whenever she’s in their lands. But I’m also curious, what made you decide to swap their ages for this fic? I was actually waiting for Kakashi’s role here and was surprised to find him as a baby! Cue *canon-kakashi habits* but this time learned from/influenced by Sakura 😂

4. Saku x Boys and the inevitable jealousy that Shika feels from her interactions — MAAM I SO LOVE THIS DYNAMIC. It’s really great to see the other facets of Sakura that boggle Shika’s mind. I think it’s quite difficult for him to come to terms with the other sides of Sakura that’s friendly, loving, touchy, etc. that he’s recently seen, because he really really wants to hate her but he’s horny af so he’s basically dissociating (it’s real entertainment to us tho)

5. And last but not the least, W O W. How are u able to maintain the mystery of whatever it is you’re still hiding from us but give us golden bread crumb clues THAT KEEP US HUNGRY???? Hmmm??? So yeah my point #5 is basically my genuine appreciation for how you write the mystery and reveal bits of truth slowly without being messy? My first read was like “omg orochimaru” and my second read was like “wtf is he doing here?” And then Mito was also introduced and the Shadows mentioned King, Queen, Princess, Prince, etc. SO NOW I HAVE THESE BLIND ITEMS I NEED TO FIGURE OUT and we’re not even halfway thru the fic!!! (Not complaining tho im a masochist like that; thanks for keeping me on my toes)

OKAY YES! BABY KAKASHI!!! Sakura has 100% attached herself to baby Kakashi for more than one reason (...that i will address later in the fic) and he will definitely pick up on her terrible habits (aka: “mah” and being late bc i think that will be so fucking funny)

As for the ages! This fic went through so many different drafts before i settled on what i wanted to do. And actually this wasn’t even the first idea for the series. The goal for this entire world is three fics (Of Love And War, Of Gore And Magic, & Of Curses And Bones). The first idea sprouted from OG&M where its Team 7 going on a quest and a war looming overhead. And then I was like “but… shikasaku…” so here we are.

Originally this fic was going to be entirely about Sakura taking out the internal chaos within the Fae guild…. But i also wanted to exercise my angst and corruption arc skills so,,, hate to love! HAHAHA

So, to answer your question: i just wanted Sakura to be the eldest and badass bitch of the group. Plus, i just really love the idea of Sakura being friends with Sakumo, Shikaku, Yoshino, and all of the older generation. I can’t really tell you why besides “fuck canon lets do it” HAHAHA! Plus, its like a different dynamic having the woman be the oldest of the group and most combative, so i like to play with those roles and utterly wreck em

We’ll definitely be seeing more Kakashi in the next chapter because i love him and he’s such a cute baby :))))))

I think that’s a big part of the last chapter is Shikamaru opening his eyes a little more to Sakura as a whole, and that completely fucking wrecks him internally.

He’s a genius, very book smart, and battle prowess enough to take down Orochimaru, but emotionally, the PTSD and trauma (along with his own bullheadedness) has really stunted him LMAO

As for a prequel with sakura and then all her friendships…. I would honestly love to write that. Like that would be so interesting?? Being able to go back into even more lore and the development of the Guilds and shit… i might actually have to plan something for that,, even if its a short thing tbh. YOUR MIND>>>>>>>>>>>

I’m using manga ages so gon’s only been back on whale island for a bit (maybe a few months).

Gon frowns, unsure of how to respond, and dangles his feet in the air and his head off the roof of Aunt Mito’s house instead. It’s a nice day, rare in the middle of winter, where the rains have stopped and the power is stable long enough to get everything charged and the internet working at home. Aunt Mito wants him to finish with the laundry, but it’s too nice to worry about that, with the smell of sun seeping into his skin and the sounds of life echoing out of the forest. It would be nicer if Killua were here, maybe.

There are so many maybes on Whale Island. Maybe he was too focused to notice them, before. Maybe he’s fourteen and fourteen year olds are supposed to be full of maybes. Maybe he’s changed.

Half the world away, Killua sighs. “We don’t have to talk about this,” he says. The words are careful, tip-toeing around a roof made of paper, like he’s worried this will break the weak barrier they’ve put up against everything that happened.  

Gon shakes his head, wriggling his toes in the warm breeze. “No, Killua! It’s important, and I couldn’t tell you before. I want to tell you.”

“If you say so.”

“I do! Although I guess there’s not much to tell.”

A breath of a laugh echoes through the phone. He doesn’t sound convinced at all, but in a tone that Gon knows means he wants to be convinced. It would be easier to tell if they could talk face to face, but it’s Killua. Gon knows him by sound, by smell, just as well by sight.

“I can feel energy, from the forest and the trees and Aunt Mito and Kon. But it’s more like before I learned about nen, although maybe it’s a little different. I’m not sure.” He looks at his toes splayed out against the blue sky. No aura, no once-familiar ripples of power, just…brown skin and freckles. It’s just him, on his own.

He expects Killua to ask how, or why, or even when, all questions he’s prepared for but doesn’t want to face right now. Killua’s always interested in the details of things, to plan for contingencies based on previous data and his own intuition. It’s fascinating to watch, and Gon can’t help but admire how good Killua is at that. But none of the questions come, not even a sound.

“Killua?”

“Do you want it back?”

The question is so unexpected Gon nearly drops his phone off the roof. His heels thunk against the roof, shingles spitting up splinters against his skin. But Gon barely registers it. “Do I want…?”

“Your nen. I can ask… Maybe Nanika can help?”

Gon sits upright, shaking his head fiercely. “No! No, Killua, don’t ask her.”

“Why not?” 

The question is sharp, almost harsh. How can Gon explain that it feels like it’s his fault? That he has to fix it himself? That he doesn’t mind not having it, most of the time? That he’s not ready yet? “Don’t. Please, Killua.”

The silence he gets back weighs about a thousand kilos on the phone, heavy enough to break. Maybe Gon should have done as Killua said, waited to talk about this until they meet each other again, or until they’re ready. But ready is too uncertain, with too many things unsaid to make it understandable. Maybe Gon will never be ready, will never be like he had worked so hard to become.

Maybe that will be okay. He just has to find out what he wants.

“And if you don’t get it back?” Killua finally asks, voice quiet and small in a way Killua never is. “What do you want to do then?”

“I’ll figure out something. I know I want to travel with you again.”

“Idiot. What if I don’t want to travel with you, Alluka’s a way better travel partner. She doesn’t leave her dirty socks on my face.”

Gon smiles. “Because I miss you, and you miss me.”

“Idiot,” Killua says again, although now his voice twinges and pops, like he has to force the word out through the blush on his face Gon knows is there even if he can’t see it. It would be easier to see the words Killua doesn’t say if they were together. But it would be easier to do a lot of things. And Gon wants to do this alone, if only for a little while.

There’s a soft rustle, maybe fabric or a blanket. How late is it wherever Killua is? He can’t say what adventures he’s having now, to keep his sisters safe, but Gon can imagine. It’s probably in the middle of the night. Gon should maybe feel a little bad about keeping him up late.

He doesn’t. Killua doesn’t, when he calls instead, so why would it be a bad thing?

“Are you really sure, Gon?”

“Yeah. I’m sure.”

“Then when you catch up, you’d better be ready. I won’t go easy on you even if you don’t have nen.” And it’s when, not if, and Gon feels his heart pound in his chest, knowing Killua believes in him. Somehow, it makes all of the maybes feel less important.
