Owning & running a small coffee shop was hard enough… what @giannibirdland was able to pull off and reopen is commendable to say the least. Producer @thisiswatt has produced one of @eddievedder best albums to date, #Earthling. There are very few people who have a tone that makes me breathe easier… one is @MilesDavis, and the other is #HoustonPerson. @heyemmet with his trio featuring @poole.kyle & @russellhall_ has been a powerhouse rythm section that knows no bounds. Recently, for his return to #Dizzys @jazzdotorg on one of nights of his residency, he invited very special guest Houston Person. I went alone for the first set with no cameras and just enjoyed it. A rare occasion. I was trying to figure out why I felt so relaxed at one point, I then realized every time Houston played I had this overwhelming sense of relief. Can’t explain, won’t try, just know that Houston and Miles do the same for me. • Mr. Person is a living legend at 87 years old with more energy than most a quarter his age. I had the absolute pleasure of popping by for two set at @thedjangonyc in the @theroxyhotelnyc for the #PatMartino (@martinopat) tribute concert. If you don’t know Pat’s story, it’s one of amazement. The cliff notes … he had a seizure and the emergency brain surgery left him with amnesia and he forgot how to pay guitar. He then taught himself to play again by transcribing his old solos so he could learn to play like himself again. Just WOW! • The blistering set put out by some of the best guitarist in Jazz is one for the record books, wish these pictures had sound. #PeterBernsteinGuitar, @markwhitfieldtheguitarist @paul_bollenback @dave.stryker @carmenintorrejr @patbianchiofficial running into the wee hours of the night in Tribeca. Had the immense pleasure of photographing the return of the @chrisbottimusic residency at @bluenotenyc. • Chris is a phenomenal Musician, who curates a spectacular experience with the musicians he invites to play with him. But not only is he an outstanding musicians, he’s an outstanding human being never forgetting where he comes from. Generous to a fault with his time, knowledge, connections and experience, offering help and advice to up and coming musicians whenever he can. Every now and then… someone enters the hemisphere of music that will change the direction of the genre. I have had the immense honor and pleasure of being on stage, at soundcheck and in the rehearsal rooms of some of the greatest that have stopped on this little spinning blue dot of ours. • @veronicaswiftjazz is up there with them. A young woman with limitless potential to do for Jazz, in her lifetime, that has yet to been accomplished by her predecessors. Bridge the divide. When I started going to see Jazz shows at the age of 14/15 at PAC concerts. I was the youngest person by three or four decades. When I moved to NYC, I was the youngest by a decade or two and the clubs were filled mainly by regulars, other musicians just hanging, old timers and the occasional passerby or person who thought it was a “cool” thing to do. In my time in NYC, I have had the pleasure to witness a resurgence in Jazz, not only from fans in their early 20’s, but young musicians learning the great American song book and adding to it. • With her pedigree, her upbringing, her encyclopedic knowledge of the genre, her immense talent on stage and off stage and her personality to command a room. Another astounding musician I’ve been able to befriend, #JeffTainWatts is someone that growing up as a kid, in the drum space, I looked at everything he did. @wattsky when we were doing some special jazz shows at @terremotocoffee, was kind enough to come out and play shows for the love of it. One of the best to do it. The bastion of sonic culture in NYC is a little basement in the Wedt Village called #SMALLS. • @smallslive One of the most important institutions to make it to the other side of this mess welcomes one and all. I’ve had a rule for a long time… I have to be walking distance from the place. In PPT (pre pandemic times) the place would be open until 4am, some times sneak a bit of an after hours hang. Now, they’re inching closer and closer to those old hours. • As usual… as the jam gets on the way… suporises abound. Standing Tall! The #KenFowser #Quintet live from the @thedjangonyc at @theroxyhotelnyc in #Tribeca. • #TheDjango is one of the best #Jazz bars in the City. Great location, great food, great vibe. Hang for dinner and a show, then chill at the Roxy bar for drinks and a hang. We just have to convince @tonyfant to keep the place open until 5am with a small fare snack menu and the place would be complete. Maybe add a pool to the roof, then it’ll really be complete. 😂😉.
