okay english speaking guys now listen real close cause I'm gonna explain you something

in the english version dankovsky thinks that artemy's hands are gentle. gentle means soft, caring, kinda associated with tenderness and in some cases maybe even love. and it's kinda right, I mean, it's not a mistake to think about artemy that way.

but in russian daniil uses the adjective «чуткий» (pronounced like chutkiy) and it's not the same thing as gentle.

sometimes this word can be used as a synonym to empathetic. like «чуткий человек» - «an empathetic person», a person who's good at understanding other people's emotions. but at this case it's not about emotions.

another good option of translation is sensitive, but it's still not the same. it's about physical sensations, mostly (but not only) about touching. but usually sensitive person is someone who is touched, who feels the impact, not someone who touches, who provides the impact.

however, it's not «haruspex is чуткий», it's «his hands are чуткие» and it's more about his ability to work with patients and his knowledge of the lines. using this word daniil emphasises that artemy is a surgeon, and, most importantly, menkhu. in fact, artemy is not as educated as daniil and he does not know much about the lines, but he feels it. the whole haruspex's route is about his intuition, his feeling of relation to the kin. and talking about his hands dankovsky accidentally emphasises his role of a menkhu, a person, who knows how to cut, how to work with a body.

it's not like english version of patho sucks but it's just a fun example of struggles with translation.
