Hanukkah song written in the Ladino language, Featuring Pink Martini's lead vocalist China Forbes, co-lead vocalist Storm Large, regular guest vocalist NPR's Ari Shapiro, and Cantor Ida Rae Cahana, "Ocho kandelikas" is an upbeat gem from the band's seminal holiday album "Joy to the World." The song was written by Flory Jagoda in the rarely heard language of Ladino, a Judeo-Spanish language mixing elements of Old Spanish, Hebrew, Turkish, and other languages common to the Iberian Peninsula in the 16th century.

"I am sorry if I am too late," the young man spoke softly, a box in his arms.
Inside, poking over the edge of the box, was an old Menorah cast in bronze, an old copy of the Torah and Talmud, a small box of candles. Not a lot of things, mind, but it was small. There was even a chocolate babke, wrapped in butcher's paper.
"I cannot stand by and let my brothers suffer. So, a Mitzvah. However small."
Tumblr media
"Oh, thank you, kind stranger. I am eternally grateful for whenever brethren can help each other help," Guy says as he takes the box and glances at its contents. "A nice reminder that G-d doesn't entirely hate us. On a daily basis at least. Heh."
Tumblr media
Of the items provided, Guy is the least familiar with the babka, being born and raised within a strictly Sephardic community in France. With that said, treats are still a Hannakuh tradition--he's just used to keftes and bimuelos instead. "Ohh, what's this?? This looks delicious! חַג חֲנוּכָּה שַׂמֵחַ! My name is Guy! What's yours?"
