DeGrazia said the "Superstition Mountains have quite a personality. She is alive. Her mood is ever changing. You can be close to her and yet feel so very far away. She bathes in rainbow colors. Her desert shadows are long and purple; they look like long eyelashes...Once you see her you can’t help but wonder about her and admire her beauty. You too will fall in love with her.”

DeGrazia loved when critics referred to his artistic style as rebellious. He said he would get “scolded. To hell with that. If I want to stretch the neck of a horse, I’ll stretch it. If I want to paint a pink horse, I’ll paint it. That is what it’s all about––not doing it the way they want you to do it, but doing it your way.”

“There is no formula for success in an art career. I want to be notorious rather than famous. Fame has too much responsibility. People forget you are human.” - Arizona Artist Ettore “Ted” DeGrazia

After DeGrazia made the realization that galleries were not interested in exhibiting his artwork, he decided to build his own. In 1944 he bought an acre of land with $25 down at the corner of Prince Road and Campbell Avenue to build his first adobe studio. Happy Throwback Thursday!

After the mass reproduction of DeGrazia’s oil painting “Los Ninos” in 1960, he became known as the one of the most reproduced artists in the world. As Marion DeGrazia recalled, “When we went to New York, when they were doing the UNICEF card “Los Ninos”, we went in the gate and these great, tall Swiss guards said, ‘Oh, you can’t come in here’. He was wearing his boots and his cowboy hat. And just in time, somebody from the party came down and said, ‘No, he’s the guest of honor. Bring him in’…It was for children, of course. They sold, they say, a million boxes.” Happy Throwback Thursday!

Tucson artists Ted DeGrazia and Marion Sheret DeGrazia were married in a jungle wedding chapel in Oaxaca, Mexico in 1947. The newlyweds spent about a month in and around Tehuantepec, on the Pacific side of the isthmus of Mexico. Ted came prepared to paint on their honeymoon, and the lush tropical jungles of the region provided him with exciting new subject matter. He brought back more than three-dozen jungle paintings from Oaxaca. Happy Throwback Thursday! 🌱

“I’m not impressed with the fact that I’m suppose to be famous,” DeGrazia said. “All that really means–once you start to believe it–is that people have some kind of unnatural ‘hold’ on your life. I don’t want anybody, or any situation, to dictate how I live my life.”
