a starter for @patroklides ( anders ) !
SHE IS NO STRANGER TO A LIFE ON THE RUN. that is what the first twenty years of her life consisted of, after all — thanks to her father, herself & the cursed blight. the life of a warden is not exactly PEACEFUL either; it involves running toward as well as running from darkspawn. as such, bethany thinks, she has grown rather SKILLED at crafting optimal plans to escape on the spot. she knows what to do; how to act; how not to attract any UNWANTED attention. that has served her & anders well enough since their departure from kirkwall, has allowed them travel unnoticed.
THE LOUDLY MEOWING CAT IN HER BAG, HOWEVER, HAS OTHER PLANS.
❝ WE’RE ALMOST THERE, I PROMISE. ❞ she whispers, shooting a quick look at the meowing thing before returning her focus to the large crowd of individuals moving not too far from where stands. ❝ he is somewhere——— ❞ the end of her sentence vanishes into the air; a glimmer of desperation bleeds into her eyes as she mentally scans the lively group of people. maker’s breath, where is he? finally, after what feels like ETERNITY, a familiar figure wanders into her line of sight.
THERE.
❝ ANDERS ! ❞ a quick hiss slips out of her mouth. it is dangerous to use his name when others are present, but HOW ELSE is she expected to efficiently catch the mage’s attention? silently, she lifts her hand & gestures, urgently, for the other to join her. ❝ anders, quick, come her——— ❞ as if energized by the sound of an old friend’s name, ser pounce-a-lot meows once again — and elicits a sigh out of her.
HOPEFULLY, she thinks to herself, THE CAT WAS WORTH THE TROUBLE.

in an hour of need prompts // accepting !
AT HIS WORDS, HER HAND GOES STILL; the steady flow of healing arcane energy becomes a trickle & then ceases entirely. gaze lifts from the wound on his body that she has been METICULOUSLY trying to heal for a good moment now, and her eyes fill to the brim with confusion. what does he mean with ‘ not what you signed up for ’ ? nothing comes to her mind that he could refer to. he may have brought up the idea of her joining the grey wardens as a means to save her from premature death; he, surprisingly ( to her, at least ), may have played a significant role in the shocking events of the kirkwall rebellion.
YET, NEITHER EXAMPLE COUNTS AS SOMETHING HE WOULD HAVE FORCED HER TO SIGN UP FOR. furthermore, it had been her choice to accompany him after they had all left kirkwall behind & begun their new lives as ( likely very much wanted ) fugitives. no blindly signing up — the outcome and the consequences of her choice have always been crystal clear to her.
❝ THAT’S WHERE YOU’RE WRONG, ANDERS. ❞ there is a note of determination in her otherwise calm voice as she speaks. ❝ this is what i signed up for. ❞ gentle grace characterizes the movement of her left hand as she takes his hand on hers. her right hand is lifted above the wound again, HEALING MAGIC once more beginning to trickle from it.
THERE IS SILENCE THEN. heavy memories from the past long gone flash across bethany’s mind as she considers her next words. ❝ being on the run can be very lonely. ❞ especially now, especially in his case in the current state of the world. an ache swells within her heart at the thought; nobody deserves that, especially not a man as kind as anders is. ❝ and i don’t want you to go through it all alone. ❞
