#☩ HEADCANON / It doesn’t matter how history remembers me.

While I usually headcanon that Shay kept visiting the Finnegans from time to time ( because it makes absolutely no sense that he would just disappear from their lives after what they did for him) he started limiting his visits when he realized that his presence in their lives was just going to put them in danger. The Assassins and their gangs might be losing control over New York, but Shay has got enemies everywhere, and he just doesn’t want to risk their safety.
I also hc that it was Shay to confirm the news of Monro’s death ( because there were speculations about the Colonel’s death but nothing was certain and since he literally died in Shay’s arms he would know if he’s alive or not rip) and after he delivered them the tragic news, he bid them farewell.
He still kept an eye on them though, but much more subtly.

and since I’m on a Shay-in Versailles mode, you would think that he bought the outfit he wears when he infiltrates the palace, but the truth is that he stole it from a nobleman (I will soon explain how ) because he didn’t have enough money and time to buy one and he just couldn’t go inside the palace looking like a tramp.

Not every newly recruited sailor came as a stranger to Shay when Gist went looking for a new crew for the Morrigan. There is one he knew long before Gist introduced each other, and this sailor ( whose name is Gavin ), used to be Shay's father's first-mate.
Gavin has always been a very good friend of Shay’s father. They met long before they moved to New York with their respective wives, and tbh it’s also safe to say that their relationship was close to similiar to Shay and Liam’s one. Besides, being a family friend, Gavin also took an important role in Shay’s childhood as well. He always considered Shay like some sort of nephew, and he was the one to teach him a few tricks about sailing.
When tragedy struck and Shay’s father lost his life, Gavin was one of the few survivors that managed to return by their families in New York. He offered to become Shay’s legal guardian, knowing that the lad was an orphan now, but Shay refused and the two never saw each other again. That until, years later, a certain explorer came to him and asked if he was interested in joining a certain Captain Cormac’s crew. ;) Of course he couldn’t refuse the chance to sail with a Cormac again.

When things are going wrong around them, who do they turn to for help?
Shay has never been one to ask for help. He always prefers to sort things on his own. It's not even a matter of pride, tbh, he just got used to it after his father’s death. He got orphaned so quickly ( and technically abandoned by his aunt ) that he had to rely on his own. Else he would not have survived.
Yes, he had Liam, and he did save his arse more times than he could count, but Shay never liked asking him for help. He was his best friend and he trusted him dearly, but he always saw him so busy and accomplished with the Assassins cause, that he didn’t want to bother him with his problems. He saw him happy, so he pretended to be happy as well, even though the Assassin life wasn’t made for him at all.
So yeah, Shay hoards his feelings till he comes to a breaking point where he will explode and do things he might regret later (that's kinda what happened after the whole ordeal of Lisbon, although he'd been contemplating leaving the Assassins for a while. Lisbon was just the last straw. But he never once regretted choosing to leave the Assassins that night )
He also tends to isolate himself when things around him are a bit too much to handle, so he can clear his mind and /hopefully/ find a solution. However, there have been times where negative thoughts took its toll on him, and that is where alcohol comes in. He thinks that drinking himself senseless will help him feel better, but (spoiler alert) he doesnt!!!
That usually happened more in his younger years because he was more ‘wild’ with his emotions, though he might slip into the same bad habit even now as a Templar (since, y’know, he has a lot of regrets and all brfk), BUT I think he would handle it better because there are some people in the Order who genuinely care about him :’)
He might even try to open up and ask for help from someone, but it has to be someone he trusts dearly and that he's not afraid to show his vulnerable side.

The Morrigan had a ship’s cat for a while. It was a black kitty whom Shay and the crew named Keira. The first time Shay saw her was in NY and she just wouldn’t stop following him everywhere, she even climbed on the Morrigan when he was about to leave so he eventually decided to offically welcome her as a new crewmember.
However, Shay was soon forced to give her away because the kitty wasn’t going to survive in the extremely cold temperatures of the North Atlantic ( since he spends long periods of time there. ) One day he was docked at Albany when he heard a little girl weep because she had just lost her cat, so Shay went back to the Morrigan and decided to give Keira to the child.
Sometimes when he visits Albany the cat would regonize him and immediately come purr at him.
