Let’s talk about Hero Names!

And linguistics

And maybe a few headcanons

Let’s start with how most of the class handles their hero names, with everyone’s favorite edgelord, Tokoyami, as an example.

What’s of interest here is his actual hero name, Tsukuyomi, written as ツクヨミ.

Here, “Tsukuyomi” is written in Katakana, which is a written language mostly used for foreign words. Uravity, deku, creati, and most other hero names fall under Katakana. And even though tsukuyomi is a Japanese word, Tokoyami writes it in Karakana, probably to imply that he doesn’t consider himself to be an actual moon deity, but still wanted a catchy and recognizable name.

Next is Kirishima, man among men:

His name, Red Riot, is written in two ways here, both as Katakana and Kanji. Kanji uses Chinese characters to convey thoughts. Each character has a semantic meaning. In other words, each character has inherent meaning behind it. For example, 烈怒頼雄斗 contains a character from Kiri’s idol, Crimson Riot as well as “rage” and “man” among others. Katakana (レッドライオット) is only used to show you how to pronounce the Kanji as they can be read in different ways.

I could go on and on about Kirishima, and I might in another post, but let’s move on... to Iida and Todoroki

They both use their first names as their hero names, Tenya and Shouto. Notice the difference, though?

Tenya (天哉) is written in Kanji, and Shouto (ショート) is written in Katakana.

According to the MHA wiki, “[Tenya’s] first name contains "heaven" (天 ten) and the character the interjections "how," "what" and "alas" are written in Japanese (哉 ya)”

Anyway, my point is that his hero name is his name.

Todoroki is the same case, but not quite. Shouto (焦凍) has the characters for burn and freeze in it, but that semantic meaning is discarded in his hero name. Considering the meaning behind his name and the contrast to his siblings, who have more “normal” names, his dad probably named him, and he’s not a big fan of Endeavor, like, at all. He embraced both of his quirks as his own, but maybe even the idea of having both quirks referenced in his name is too reminiscent of his dad, seeing as he was “created” with those quirks to surpass All Might.

Choosing to write his hero name in Katakana turns a name with all that extra baggage into a sound with no meaning other than “it’s my name”. The kids picked their hero names to represent what they want to be in the future, and at this point, Todoroki knows for sure what he doesn’t want to be. And maybe he doesn’t quite know what he actually wants to be other than a hero, and himself.
