I recently finished reading The Moe Manifesto: An Insider's Look at the Worlds of Manga, Anime, and Gaming by Patrick W. Galbraith. I was particularly interested in this book because it contains interviews with two creators involved with Showa magical girls -- Sato Toshihiko (佐藤 俊彦) and Nunokawa Yuji (布川ゆうじ). Nunokawa was involved with several shows in the Studio Pierrot Magical Girl Series, including Magic Angel Creamy Mami (魔法の天使クリィミーマミ), Magic Star Magical Emi (魔法のスターマジカルエミ), Magic Idol Pastel Yumi (魔法のアイドルパステルユーミ), Magic Stage Fancy Lala (魔法のステージ・ファンシーララ). Sato was among the creators of Magical Princess Minky Momo (魔法のプリンセス ミンキー モモ).

Both of them basically say that they never anticipated adult of male fans of their series, and were quite surprised. Nunokawa goes so far as to say that they didn't know how to make money off of the adult fans at first. Nunokawa also says that he believes the enduring power of the magical girl trope lies in its association with opportunities for peaceful change. I tend to agree with that, although I wouldn't want to limit the potential power of the archetype just to that.

Sato mentions Idol Angel Welcome Yoko (アイドル天使ようこそようこ), an early Heisei magical girl I don't hear about very often.

Overall, I enjoyed the bok, and I do finally feel like I understand what moe means which is nice. I do feel like Galbraith shrinks from the most intense question in that field, which is why there's so much focus on youth, but I do understand why.

Top 10 magical girl characters (heroes/villians/others)?

Thank you for the ask! I love magical girls as much as I love giant robots.

It’s probably not a coincidence that I prefer stories about transforming robots and transforming characters. Freud and Jung would love me.

10. Madoka Mano from Devil Hunter Yōko [魔物ハンター妖子]Madoka is one of my favorite “badass grannies who don’t take shit,” probably because she reminds me of both of my grandmothers (except for the devil hunting…probably)

9. Yōko Mano from Devil Hunter Yōko [魔物ハンター妖子]Yōko is probably one of my favorites b/c DHY was one of the first magical girl anime that I ever saw, it predates Sailor Moon. Given the adult content I never connected the two as part of the same genre until later in life. I have no idea why Yōko is relatable, but some how she is. It probably has to do with her dynamic with her grandmother Madoka.

8. Clef from Magic Knight Rayearth [魔法���士レイアース]His character design and smart-ass mouth hit all the right notes with me. Rayearth 2 Clef is even better.

7a. Pastel Yumi from Pastel Yumi, the Magic Idol [魔法のアイドルパステルユーミ] Pastel Yumi is neat concept: she’s an artist whose kind-hearted rescue of a dandelion during the Flower Festival earns her the respect of two flower elves. They bestow upon her the magic ability to bring her drawings to life. There is also a crossover OVA where she appears with the other Studio Pierrot magical girls.

7b. Wedding Peach from Legend of the Angel of Love: Wedding Peach [愛天使伝説ウェディングピーチ]Momoko is a “love angel” protecting the world from demons…in a magical wedding dress. I’m gender-fluid and usually come across as a futch, and yet I still love these ridiculously girly concepts.

6. Zagāto from Magic Knight Rayearth [魔法騎士レイアース]He’s a wonderful antagonist that embodies many of CLAMP’s iconic concepts.

5. Juri Arisugawa from Revolutionary Girl Utena [少女革命ウテナ]Tall, elegant, fencing babe with a tragic crush. She’s a good antagonist.

4. Sailor Moon from Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon  [美少女戦士セーラームーン]I could fill up this list with characters from Sailor Moon. I love them all. I appreciate that Usagi is complex with a deep history but also relatable and goofy.

3. Umi Ryūzaki from Magic Knight Rayearth [魔法騎士レイアース]Another tall, elegant, fencing babe. I might have type.

2. Sailor Saturn from Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon [美少女戦士セーラームーン]I usually don’t like apocalypse waifs, but Hotaru eclipses that trope in so many unique ways that she is one of the most compelling characters of the magical girl genre. Keeping it vague because any discussion of her is a spoiler mine-field.

1b. Utena from Revolutionary Girl Utena [少女革命ウテナ]I identified with Utena during my late teens/early 20s b/c Reasons.
