It’s 8 AM. You wouldn’t usually know this, because your eyes would be closed and you’d be in a deep slumber, but unfortunately, it’s 8 AM and you’re awake. Well, technically, it’s 8:09 but who’s counting? Other than the digital clock on the nightstand, of course.

It will be difficult for you to even try to go back to sleep, so you don’t. You’ll just raise hell to make up for your lost sleep on a Saturday of all days. “Turn the light off.” You groan. You’re lying almost face down on the bed, pillow to your right cheek, but it didn’t stop you from immediately noticing that your boyfriend, Wonwoo, wasn’t in bed with you. Though, something like that didn’t bother you much because he’s usually downstairs cooking breakfast during the weekend. He doesn’t have to, but he says he likes to, if only to make up for you working so hard during the week. He works too, but he says you do more than you need to at your job, often staying late to keep the order.

When he doesn’t respond to your request, you open one of your eyes. He’s standing in the corner of the room, looking out of the window. “Turn the light off.” You repeat. He chuckles slightly, shaking his head. “Darling, the light isn’t on. It’s the sun.” He tells you, almost matter-of-factly. If he wasn’t laughing at your plea, he’s definitely deriving humor from you slamming a pillow over your head to block the light.

The blinds aren’t even drawn, that’s how bright it is. “I made breakfast, but you gotta get up if you want it. I would’ve brought it up to you, but that tray you bought from Ikea…capsized or something. In other words, I struggled enough with it earlier to confirm it does not work anymore. Sorry,” You nonverbally whine and kick your legs, not wanting to get up from the warmth of the covers. It’s too early for your brain to process any of those words, but his little tangent was understood to you as “no breakfast in bed for you”. Wonwoo crosses the room and dives onto his side of the bed, pulls you towards him, and immediately cages you in his arms. “You’re quite cranky today, baby. What’s wrong, hm?” He gently lifts the pillow from your head and places it behind his. “Too early.” You respond, leaning into his touch. He kisses the top of your cheekbone and that’s when you decide to finally sit up.

You find a place between his legs and he wraps his arms around your torso. “Thank you.” You say, looking up at him from behind you. “Hm?”

“For cooking. I feel bad that you’re always the one doing it but I don’t wake up early enough.” He shakes his head, dismissing your gratitude. “You’re still thanking me?” He questions. You’re confused. Why wouldn’t you?

He explains, “I couldn’t even give you breakfast in bed,” Now it’s your turn to laugh. How ridiculous could he be to think you would ever be upset about not having breakfast in bed. Sure, you were acting a little irritable, but that is easily blamed on the early morning hour, not some little Ikea tray malfunction.

“You spoil me too much.” is all you say. With his head resting on your shoulder, he turns it slightly and whispers into your ear, “Yet somehow, not nearly as much as you deserve.”

When JK said that Jimin is prettier than the sky did Jimin really say he didn’t enjoy his comment? Or was it more like it was too cheesy/lame? Thank you in advance!

Hi!! so sorry it's taken me so long to answer this question, I've gotten a handful of asks about this moment but I was struggling so much with the translation.

"좀 별로예요 기분" is what Jimin says. Now, 별로 is kind of a difficult word here (at least for me lol) because it's technically an adverb to express something like 'not at all, barely.' For example, 'I don't like (x) at all" could be said as 별로 안 좋다. 좋다 means like, 안 is the negative form.

But sometimes, spoken Korean isn't grammatically perfect or makes the most sense from a technical point of view. 별로 is often used as an adjetive to express that something isn't good, just like Jimin used it in this case. So when he's saying 별로예요 he's conjugating 별로 like it were an adjective.

To break down the rest of the sentence, 좀 means 'a little' (it's used as a filler word sometimes, to soften the delivery of the sentence) and 기분 means 'mood, feelings.' The way I see it, he's saying 'Oh, that sounds a little off' 'I don't quite like that' in the sense of 'that was a very lame/cheesy response' but TRUST the tone he used? 100% joking. To me this is exactly how I react when I say something silly and my friends make a flirty joke or viceversa. Just today I was squinting my eyes outside because the sun was really bright and my friend said 'is it because I'm blinding?" and i jokiingly gagged. SAME VIBES

I think the directness or brevity of subtitles can sometimes make the boys sound really harsh or straightforward but 90% of the time context is needed to understand they're joking :( so please understand that Jimin here was a 100% joking around with JK for the silly comment he made!! We know he likes to play hard and that 'he's not an easy person' (whatever he meant by that LMAO <3)

The interaction between Han Joo Won and Lee Dong Sik when they first met.

In the scene where the two main characters meet for the first time, the stark difference between the ways they greet each other is almost astonishing. One is overly polite, and the other is the total opposite.

To start, what should be noted is that even though Joo Won is a higher-ranking officer than Dong Sik, the latter is much older than the former. In Korea, age almost always comes first over rank. And you should treat people older than you with certain manners not to be rude.

1) Body language

Dong Sik bows first (pretty deeply at that, in my opinion), and offers his hand first. He even puts his left hand on his belly, which makes him look much more polite. Usually it should be the other way around for the younger to show respect to the older. However, Joo Won does not do so, and on top of that, refuses the handshake. He tells Dong Sik why, but unfortunately, "I don't like people touching me" would be perceived as a very weak excuse, as acknowledging phobias and acting accordingly is not really a norm in the country.

2) Verbal language (tone)

There are four different tones in Korean, depending on how informal or formal you want to be. To be formal, you put "-요 (more formal)" or "-ㅂ니다 (most formal)" at the end of each sentence. Plus, there are the informal "I" and the formal "I", etc. Then how does Joo Won and Dong Sik's conversation go in the scene?

HJW: 제가 손 닿고 그러는 걸 별로 좋아하지 않아서. 한주원입니다.

Dong Sik is using a very polite tone, as if he is greeting someone much older or higher in rank than him (e.g. Nam Sang Bae or Han Ki Hwan). On the other hand, Joo Won does use the formal "I (제)," but omits "-요" after "않아서." It is a subtle but noticeable choice. Furthermore, he is not trying to be amiable at all by saying things like "I'm sorry"/"Excuse me" for not shaking hands, or "Nice to meet you," "Looking forward to working with you," etc., which could be nice pleasantries or "buffers." Rather, he just says what he needs to say, gives a little bow, and leaves. And Dong Sik did not even put his ignored hand down yet.

Long story short, the impression I got from the scene was that Joo Won was being deliberately difficult (with a bare minimum of politeness) to convey the message, "We're not gonna be friends." A gentle "fuck you," even. And I don't think Dong Sik was amused.
