"Say it back, oh, say it ditto" – Examining one-sided relationships and escapism in kpop through NewJeans (뉴진스) 'Ditto'

NewJeans new single “Ditto” is a cute song about a one-sided love and the hope, that the other person will eventually return it. A closer look at the music videos, however, shows a more sinister social commentary on para-social relationship and escapism present in kpop.

The music videos continue the style already present in “Attention” and “Hype boy”: It combines nostalgic 2000s visuals, with melodic pop music shot through the female gaze, focussing on the relationship between the members and the sentiment of youth.

The music videos

The A side tells the story of 6 school friends. A girl, played by Kdrama actress Park Jihu, is mostly filming the other five having fun, dancing in public or taking care of her. Her face is always hidden, mostly showed from behind or concealed by the old camera she is holding. There is also a boy, played by Choi Hyunwook, who seem to be interested in the girl, and – in typical Kdrama manner – is always watching her from afar.

The last third of the video breaks with the joyful narrative of the video and reveals that the protagonist had only daydreamed about the five friends. A montage without music shows the reality of all the situations, previously seen as happy moments. The music video ends with the imaginary friends erasing a calk board drawing of the protagonist.

The B side follows the reveal, by focusing more on the relationship of the girl with the real people around her. It emphasizes her loneliness and the negative situation of the other students to her odd behavior. The five members of NewJeans mainly appear in old appearing camera footage – reminiscence of the portrayal of old memories in media. The last scene cuts to the now older looking protagonist rewatching these videos on a VHS player.

Another interpretation would be, that she didn't simply imagine the girls, but that they are based on her real friends, that have passed away. She is seen with a cast, so maybe the six friends got into an accident, and only she survived. We see her dealing with the pain and survivors guilt, by isolating herself and daydreaming the others are still at her side. We also see the concern of the other students, mainly the male character, that are looking out for her, trapping herself in her happy memories in order to escape the harsh new reality.

Para-social relationships and escapism in Kpop

Another possible interpretation is looking at “Ditto” as commentary on para-social relationships and general escapism present in Kpop. Most relationship between idol and fan are one-sided. The fans only watch the idol's happy moments through the camera, yearning to be close to them or be like them. It becomes a way to escape their lonely or hard lives, but it can be further isolating them from the real surroundings.

Especially during the pandemic, kpop became a popular escape for many people. In some cases this escapism and the para-social relationships they engaged in, becomes unhealthy ... obsessive, all consuming ... until the person looses themselves in it.

NewJeans (뉴진스) 'Ditto' is more than a sweet song about love, it tells a different story of love and loneliness, while being self-aware of the social practice within an industry build on selling a dream.
