주연의 춤에 대해서 나에게 중요한 키워드는 주체성이다. 그 주체성은 흔히들 말하는 자족적이며 자율적인 개인으로서의 주체성이 아니라 행위 주체성, 즉 역동적인 개념, "주체와 동일시되지 않는 존재 방식을 생산하는 주체화 과정"을 생산하는 행위 주체성을 뜻한다. 이게 무슨 말이냐고? 주체적이라는 말은 자주 "스스로 우뚝 선 강함"을 뜻하게 된다. 그러나 여기서 다룰 주체성은 스스로 우뚝 설 필요 없는 ���동성을 뜻한다. 자아의 기술인 것이다.

아직도 모르겠다면 계속 설명할 기회를 주시라. 사람들이 주연의 춤을 표현할 때 자주 쓰는 표현은 담백하다인데, 이 담백함의 원인이 어디인가, 가 이 포스트의 주제다. 이 담백함은 절제에서 오는 것일까? 혹은 심취되지 않음, 계산됨에서 오는 것일까? 그렇게 설명할 수도 있겠지만 왠지 속에 차지 않는 설명이다. 주연의 춤을 잘 보고 있으면 박자감이 늘 정박되어 있지 않다는 걸 발견하는데 이를 통해 절제된 계산보다는 감각적인 육체에 많은 걸 맡긴다는 걸 알 수 있다. 숨 쉴 틈 없이 안무를 수행하는 것보다 그루브한 감각과 춤에서의 호흡을 즐긴다는 말을 미루어보아서도 그렇다. 주연의 인터뷰에는 계산과 즉흥이 모두 엿보인다. 그런데도 주연이 즉흥이란 장르에 강한 편인가 하면 딱히 그렇지도 않다. 그런 주연의 특성을 설명할 수 있는 언어가 뭐가 있을까.

나는 이것을 주연의 한정된 자아의 기술과 연결 짓는다. 가설이기도 하지만, 재밌는 가설이고 맞아 떨어지는 설명이라고 생각한다. 한정된 자아의 기술은 자기를 대할 때 있어 거리를 유지하며 애초에 격노하지 않고 상황에 유연한 상태를 말한다. 무대 위 행위 주체성의 흐름을 춤이라고 명명해보자. 그렇다면 주연의 이러한 특성은 자연히 춤에 배어들지 않겠는가? 춤에서 반향을 허용할 수 있는 것, 호흡에 몸을 맡기는 것, 그러면서도 규율(안무)를 잊지 않는 것, 어떤 과정을 생략하지 않는 것, 자신을 나르씨즘적으로 표출하지 않는 것 등등의 아이러니를 모두 설명하기 위해선 주연이 가진 하나의 기술이자 주체성에 대한 설명이 필요하다.

가령 스튜디오 춤에서의 주연을 유심히 살펴 보자. 여기서 주연은 장악을 위한 과잉을 표현하지 않는다. 주연은 "화려하고 임팩트 있는 동작을 하기보다는 아무것도 안 했으면 좋겠다, 그러나 아무것도 안 하기에는 뭣했다."라는 식으로 곡을 이해하는데, 이렇게 단조로운 리듬에 단조로운 멜로디가 흐르는 카리스마를 표현하기 위해서 주연이 "과잉"을 택하지 않았다는 것은 꽤나 흥미로운 지점이다. 보통 자신을 분출하는 괴물성을 드러내기 쉬운 음악 아닌가. 그런데 그런 형태의 춤을 추지 않는다. 주연의 괴물성은 주체의 과잉을 통해 나타나지 않는다. 오히려 주체의 한정됨을 통해-육체성에 집중되며-나타난다. 그것은 고로 자신을 과잉하며 "연극하는" 방식이 아니라 오히려 "자신을 녹여내는" 방식에 가깝다. 그 점이 (자신을 연극하며 이상향에 의한 괴리에 자괴감을 느끼는)나르시시즘과 주연을 구분한다. 여기서 주연의 주체성은 자족적인 형태로 나타나지 않는 것이다. 오히려 기술적인 영역으로 넘어간다.

즉 한정된 자아의 기술이 느껴지는 것이다. 자아를 주체하지 못한 채로 이리저리 휘두르는 것이 아니라 본인에게 자연스러운 상태로 두되, 수행성을 통한 행위 주체성을 잃지 않는 것. 그것이 주연 춤의 전반적인 특징이다.

초기 근대에서 <안무>는 몸을 재기계화하며 엄격한 음악적 프레임에 맞춰 사지를 조화롭게 만드는 작업이었다. 그런데 최근으로 들어서자 이 엄격하고 촘촘하게 이루어진 몸의 운동성에 대한 반발이 시작되는데, 안무에서 "멈춤" 상태를 표현하는 것이다. 그것을 안드레 레페키는 [움직임의 순수한 진열이라는 춤의 개념이 소진되고 있는 현상]이라고 일컬었다. 즉 안무와 즉흥은 당연하게도 반대 급부의 이야기가 된다. 안무에서 멀어질수록, 즉흥에 가까워진다.

이런 안무와 즉흥의 관계에서 어떤 것이 "더 좋다"고 얘기하기는 어렵다. 그러나 즉흥만을 추구하게 되면 오히려 자유를 흉내내기 위해 또 다른 틀을 만들어내기 쉽다. 진정한 자유는 안무 속의 반향에 존재하는 게 아닐까. 이 반향은 "안무를 불이행하는 것, 안무를 거부하는 것"이 될 수도 있지만 동시에 "안무를 수행하는 것, 안무를 받아들이는 것"이 될 수도 있다. 그 속의 댄서만의 행위 주체성을 발견하는 일, 그것이 우리가 해야 되는 일 아닐까.

주연의 행위 주체성은 고로 그런 반향과 닮아있다. 규율을 벗어나지도, 규율에 충성하지도 않는다. 자유를 원하고 갈망한다. 그것은 주연에게 모순되는 일이 아니다. 그 모순되지 않음 속에서 주연은 꾸준히 자신의 행위 주체성을 호흡하고 흐름에 내놓는다. 즉흥과 안무 사이에서 틈을 만들어 내는 것, 규율과 자유 속에서 모순되지 않는 자유를 만들어 내는 것은 많이 닮아있다. 그 점을 사랑하고, 또 사랑한다.

you couldn’t sleep that night, tossing and turning for what felt like forever. you lay awake while your best friend jooyeon is sound asleep underneath you. it wasn’t uncommon for you guys to sleep together, as you guys were just always that close. you have your hand on his chest, tapping away at an imaginary beat.

“y/n,” jooyeon calls your name, now just as awake as you.

“oh… joo,” you didn’t even realize he woke up.

“what are you doing awake?” he stirs, squirming a little from underneath you.

“ah… just woke up,” your head is turned upward, facing your best friend.

“can’t sleep?” bingo.

“yeah,” you don’t provide an explanation for him, because even you don’t know what’s keeping you up.

“well, you can come closer to me. maybe that’ll be better,” jooyeon shifts more, pulling you even closer to his embrace. you’re hardly any distance away from him, personal space practically nonexistent.

“ah,” you feel a little flustered at his sudden action, looking away. you try brushing it off. “haha, any closer and we’ll-“ you meet jooyeon’s eyes. they have a glimmer to them, and for some reason you can’t look away.

it’s like you’re both in a trance, jooyeon never breaking eye contact with you and you somehow not able to break it either. that’s when jooyeon starts to move. he reaches his arm off of where it’s rested on your waist and moves it up, gently setting his hand on your cheek. you can tell, he’s getting closer if possible. his face now not even an inch from yours… but you can’t.

“ah… jooyeon,” you pull back, putting the most distance between the two of you you’ve had all night.

“is that… not what I was supposed to do?” he blinks at you, a tinge of confusion on his face.

“we can’t,” you say to him, voice gone quiet.

“what do you mean?” he asks before he pauses, hesitant. “you… like me back?”

“jooyeon…” your cheeks light ablaze. you can’t bring yourself to look at him again.

“I like you, y/n,” but soon enough, your eyes dart to his once more. your whole body in a shock, because it’s different hearing the words straightforward. “and to be honest, I’ve probably liked you since we met. I just only knew for sure when we got even closer a couple months ago.”

“I…” you don’t know how to respond. you hold back, before deciding to be honest. “I liked you the moment we met.”

“you do like me…” jooyeon realizes it. “so why don’t you want to?”

“just…” you find it hard to explain, because deep down you do want to. no matter what you say, you know it’s really an excuse. “we’re friends, you know? and I don’t want to complicate anything with the group.”

“who cares about the group? I want you,” jooyeon says it so bluntly, no hesitation either.

“jooyeon,” you know he means it. and you’re glad he does, but you also know that other part of you wishes he didn’t.

“y/n, it wouldn’t be any different. it would still be the way we are now just… a little more.” you know he’s right… you know it.

“I know,” your voice is as quiet as can be.

“then what’s wrong?” along with confusion, you can hear the hurt heard deep within his voice now.

but you don’t want to say it. deep down you know the problem, you know what it is. and even though lee jooyeon has been your best friend for years, you can’t bring yourself to share the words with him.

“y/n… are you scared?” leave it to your best friend to be able to read you like a book.

“…yeah,” of course he knew.

“you don’t have to be, I promise. not with me.” you’re worried he feels bad, maybe at fault. but it’s not him, of course it isn’t.

“I know,” you want him to know you trust him the most. “I know you, jooyeon. it’s just… scary for me.”

“I understand.”you sigh one that’s full of relief. “and I don’t want to pressure you to make a decision. but… can I persuade you?”

you stare at him intently, and now it’s his turn to be full of thought. however, you can tell he has his mind set on his next words. maybe now he’s the one who’s scared.

“you can say no but…” he can’t keep in his thoughts much longer. “can I kiss you?”

your eyes go wide. if you from a couple years ago would’ve known that your best friend in the entire world would ask you that… you swallow hard before you answer. “yes.”

jooyeon wastes no time once you give him the okay, because his hand is back on your face faster than the first time. he leans in close, hesitating a little before he finally allows his lips to make contact with yours. you kiss him slowly, your grip on his side tightening. it isn’t long before he’s the one who pulls away.

“y/n… was that okay?” he asks you quietly, face still only an inch away from yours.

“jooyeon,” you feel fuzzy, maybe a little too in the moment because you go to kiss him again. he feels a small shock, but of course he kisses you back. this time is faster, more sure. you only break away once you’re not able to breathe.

“I take it you liked it,” he lets out with a chuckle. you laugh back, face on fire.

“I did,” you tell him shyly. never have you ever felt this flustered in front of jooyeon.

“I know it’s late so I’m probably in my head, but there’s something I wanna tell you,” his words catch your attention, and now you’re fully alert.

“tell me,” you tell him surely. as if he can just say that and not tell you.

“but, I don’t want it to scare you,” him dragging it out is what makes you more anxious. although, maybe he’s just scared again.

“you can just tell me,” you tell him gently, you want him to know he can trust you as much as you trust him.

“I love you,”you swear it, your breathing stops. “y/n… I love you.”

“oh…” it’s all the noise you can manage to make, and you actually hate it. lee jooyeon, your best friend…

“you don’t have to say it back, I don’t want to force you to,” it hurts to hear him say that but… it’s relief. although you know deep down, he’d love nothing more than to hear it back.

“I’m sorry, jooyeon,” it’s unfortunate you can’t give him what he wants.

“you don’t have to be,” if you didn’t force them away so hard, you’re certain tears would’ve fallen. you want to love him so bad… but that fear can’t go away in an instant. “besides, with more time I know you’ll love me. you’ll be completely obsessed with me.”

you laugh, and he laughs with you. you love moments like these with jooyeon. the vibe can become serious to lighthearted in an instant.

“guess we’ll see,” you say, a sharp smile present. he looks at you for a moment, and just for a second, you swear you can see another glimmer in his eyes.

“now! we should get rest,” he says suddenly, breaking eye contact. you decide not to press him about it, making at least this wish of his come true.

- Juyeon is open-minded and gladly welcomes differences. He would not trust someone who judges and forms an opinion too quickly at first glance

- This is very random but he might be interested in geography and/or history

- This man truly lives in his own world —we’re just part of it—, he runs at his own pace

- He wants to leave a significant impact on this world and to be remembered. His ambitious nature leads him to think big, the sky is the limit to him

- He knows where to focus his energy and does not waste time on things he deems as useless or unfruitful

- He seems to be a gullible person, he looks on the bright side of things even if the situation isn’t benefiting him, which makes him a bit delusional at times

- I think he is a lot more talkative than we give him credit for.

- Overprotective, Juyeon tends to prevent his loved ones from flying on their own wings and growing on their own even though he thinks he knows what’s best for everyone

- Feels the need to be needed (hope it makes sense) and wants to be admired, he is a bit greedy for fame

- I think he lowkey has a messiah complex

- As I already mentioned previously, this boy lives in his own world which leads him to neglect everything that doesn’t match it

- I literally heard “archaic” so I can interpret this as him being a bit old-fashioned at times. I can picture him telling a joke and people around him saying that it was lame or just him suggesting something that seems boring to most people

- Related to the point above, I feel like he’s often wide of the mark, in the sense that it takes time for him to react or get a joke —I picture him as a cute sloth somehow haha.— Overall, he seems to be slower than others

- Albeit open-minded, once he forms an opinion about something, he swears only by it

- He is a proud person and thinks that he is indispensable and special (I mean yes, The Boyz wouldn’t be the same without one of its members)

- He can be a bit authoritative at times and he tends to scold like a mom would

- He doesn’t always offer a helping hand to the right people, certainly due to his gullible nature.

To catch Juyeon’s attention, you have to be confident and decisive. He appreciates worry-free people who follow their desires and stay away from expectations. Independent, adventurous, and curious individuals inspire him. However, they should be aware of their limits and keep working on bettering themselves since Juyeon probably believes that there’s always something to improve —whether it’s physically, mentally, or spiritually, etc.— Since he seems to strive to become a guide to others, he looks up to people who embody this energy. To him, a perfect guide is hard-working, knows what he/she wants, and is ready to get out of his/her comfort zone while remaining chill and cool-headed. There’s an emphasis on working hard yet letting go of expected results, which leads me to think that it is primordial for him to keep a carefree and mischievous mindset no matter the circumstances. The point is yes, you obviously have to work hard to get what you want, yet you cannot control external factors, so there’s no point in worrying about something you cannot act upon.
