korena has a vowel harmony system based on "bright" and "dark" vowels, but bizarrely (to me, maybe this is common?) these vowels have *semantic content*! you can change the meaning of (some) words by changing the vowel!

반짝반짝 [banjjak banjjak], which uses the positive vowel sound ‘ㅏ’, expresses an image of small stars shining. On the other hand, 번쩍번쩍 [beonjjeok beonjjeok], which uses the negative vowel sound ‘ㅓ’, creates an image of big stars twinkling.

 To express small things such a stone falling into the water, 퐁당 [pongdang] is used. When big things fall, such as people jumping, into the water, 풍덩 [pungdeong] is used.

파랗다 [pa-lata], 노랗다 [no-lata]’ is used to express light blue and light yellow. ‘퍼렇다 [peo-leota], 누렇다 [nu-leota]’ is used to indicate dark blue and dark yellow.

올 여름은 바다 구경을 하지 못했다. 대신에 산은 몇 군데 다녀왔는데 낮에도 선선한 바람이 부는, 여름이 다 지나간 지금에서야 그 뜨거웠던 등산을 다시 기억한다.

결혼식으로 2주간의 긴 휴가를 내고도 우리는 해외로 신혼여행을 가지 않았다. 물론 국내여행도 가지 않았는데 왜 여행을 가지 않냐라는 주변 사람들의 물음에 해외 생활을 함께 오래해서 여행은 이제 질린다 라고 변명하곤 했다. 사실은 한국에 들어와서 지금까지 남들보다 늦은 달리기를 빨리 따라잡느라 앞만보고 달려온 탓에 심리적이고도 물리적인 휴식이 필요했기 때문이었다. 그래도 그 긴 휴가를 서울에서만 보내기가 아깝기도 했고 며칠 쉬었더니 다시 몸이 근질근질해서 다녀온 강원도 정선의 민둥산. 인스타그램에서 봤던 정상의 돌리네가 내 마음을 훔치기엔 충분했고 마침 수해로 멈췄던 동해선도 다시 복구되었다는 소식에 당장 그 다음날에 출발했지만 가는 날이 장날이라고 폭염특보가 처음 뜬 여름날이었다. 실제로 정상까지 올라가는 등산객은 우리 밖에 없었다.

제대로된 등산을 한 기억이 어렸을 적밖에 없던 나로써는 어찌나 힘든 산행이었는지 정상에 올라서도 그리고 그토록 보고싶던 정상의 돌리네를 보고서도 큰 감흥이 없었다. 오히려 하산할때 만난 계곡에 몸을 풍덩 담그던 그 순간이 어찌나 기억에 남는지.
