as much as i adore mizuki's english va, something about tomoyo kurosawa hits so well for both her as a child and grown up. the way she sounds in the hospital at twelve, not only insanely strong physically but so strong emotionally, finally breaking down like a child that she never got to be ( scene is right here )

to mizuki as a confident teenager, all grown up and ready to face the world, despite going through and continuing to go through more hell since well, she was born but ever facing it with a grin or steely resolution. ( example right here ) . it gives her a soft, pretty but fierce undertone voice, but at the same time a roughness to it, in between pleasant and sweet, but full of bite and unflinching fearlessness / determination all at once.

also sounds hilarious when she's teasing and taking no bs from someone. which, is quite often ! i highly recommend it because i've really fallen in love with kurosawa as mizuki too ! also hearing mizuki cry as kurosawa is heartbreaking because mizuki doesn't cry unless you actually do her route in aitsf and let me tell you it's enough for me, personally, to choke up in either language, it's just that good.

THE LIGHTNING ROD.

whether it’s your turbulent nature, or your flash quick mind, or the air of unknown about you, your undercurrent is the lightning rod. you are somewhat unpredictable, but if we unravelled we’d see you know exactly what you’re doing, but it’s makes you feel less vulnerable to pretend it wasn’t planned.

some people stay back from you, but others would follow you cross country, for the very same reason. they don’t know enough about you. the difference is in who wants to learn more.

What does your heart look like?

Basically, there are three due to the aspects / facets of Mizuki throughout the two games, mainly the first game, and seeing her a bit more unburdened in the second, although I feel she is most in character in the OG game of her own route imho, and the second game I personally feel is more a focal point for the plot's twists and turns and we see a lighter, more confident, more free side to her that we didn't get to in the Cyclops Serial Killings, which had her at the epicenter as two of the victim's daughter, however unloved, among several other victims.

However, I think in each one they apply to her, as I feel Mizuki still has not 'healed' and quite frankly, it's unlikely she ever will fully heal from the horrors and tragedies of her life, but that doesn't mean she can't have a hell of an adventurous one and find some peace, someday. Some parts I took out because I didn't feel they were applicable to her!

MOLTEN LAVA AND CHARRED FLESH. your heart burned so fiercely that it burned itself out, leaving horrible scars in its wake, scars on your chest and on the hands of those who touched you the hearts of any who got close enough to connect to yours. burnt up by your own anger, passion and love. the injuries will never fully be erased, but they can be soothed with time and trust.

A CAGE WITH IRON LOCKS you are an enigma. you take care to remain that way. what is it you truly want? you'll never know if you keep your heart locked away like that. you deserve to be known, truly and fully. stop being afraid of what you might find if you open your heart up to self reflection. stop thinking no one will love you the moment they understand you. you are more than the mask you put on.

AN OPEN DOOR, A BURNING HEARTH. your chest is wide open, and your heart is a home. others are welcomed in readily, and asked to stay. you are comfort and love, everything you were never given but so desperately want to provide to others. you have built this welcoming hearth with your own two hands and will not see anyone else left out in the cold. be careful not to burn yourself out trying to keep everyone else warm.

i always figured m.izuki even as a child while she enjoys things that aren't always healthy, since starting her training, really honed in on making herself powerful even at 12. so most of her bento boxes are packed with protein, fish, vegetables, rice and eggs. while she does enjoy sweet things, she focuses more on less self-indulgence and more on strengthening her core body with balanced meals.

and as her motif canonly is the 'rabbit' from adorabbit to being symbolized as a rabbit in a so.mnium, along with loving yellow-golden tones, i figured she'd probably have a cutesy design to go with her color palette. basically she'll devour the core foods needed to be healthy, and spoils herself with ota and gen's cooking and the food restaurants in golden yokocho and yurakucho when she wants to just give in to carbs and more greasy food. or pick up fast food on the go.

usually, you're able to bottle up your emotions and ignore the frustrations. but, after weeks of shoving everything down, your body needs a release, and i pity the poor person who managed to piss you off. it's screaming crying, shouting, kicking lockers, whatever you can do to get it out of your system. it's a whole jean grey moment, fire and fury blasting out of you.

i really want to work on mizuki's full bio on her actual blog page. there are a lot of canon divergences i put, and i base her on the mizuki route's emotional relationship notes / character growth carrying into resolution route, so mizuki isn't back to just being a 'roommate' which is major emotional whiplash for me after i finish her route; and then go straight back into resolution route.

i'll also be keeping some parts of horadori institute, although mizuki has no memory of her three years of experimentation all the while living with her blood family, she is not a clone of bibi, and in my canon bibi / the masked woman doesn't even exist. she has all the components of a loveable character, and i really enjoy her whenever she's herself, but so much was broken apart for her to exist just like the twist. so that's a big divergence from aini right there. so yes, mizuki was experimented on as shoko has repeatedly in the flashbacks of the first game stated how 'abnormal' her daughter was; probably looking for any kind of 'fix' to make her 'normal', at this point just desperate and hating her own child, so if there's a fix no matter how immoral she'll take it. she's proven she's much like that, and both her biological parents were extremely neglectful. mizuki herself even claims 'she couldn't be ordinary' when visiting bloom park with date near the climax of her route.

she likely paid chikara with her investment fraud money to a degree, to 'fix' her child, note this is the same woman who thought a baby crying was 'abnormal, a freak, etc' so i can only imagine once mizuki's genetics kicked in at a young age, probably still freakishly strong, but not at the heights she's reached at 18, which might have shoko be even more repulsed by a daughter who only deserved love from her, not emotional and physical abuse.

since my mizuki is so intertwined with abis still, she has motive with date getting hurt in the explosion route, and while i write her cringefail dad not missing, that she couldn't protect him when she always tries so hard to protect her little family, is the icing on the cake. she has motive in having a serious grudge with ryuki for that, that takes her time to forgive - but she does, will and i want to at least mention him as a mentor to her, as i was discussing with vernal that date would likely not encourage her to follow in his footsteps / feel comfortable having such a high risk job. so she's very much the 'rookie detective' who has incredible intelligence and cleverness, but can be highly reckless.

she's basically shadowing ryuki and they're both dividing the case together, and my mizuki is more forthright about him getting actual help, because ryuki deserved that, and mizuki deserved to react to further heaps of trauma.

one note is that while it's stated those who were undergoing genome editing by chikara horadori have regnerative, even possibly 'immortal' genes, mizuki does not have immortality. she ages like any other human, and while she does heal faster than the average human being, she still will carry scars and physical wounds like anyone else. the stadium final fight of her getting shot straight through still shows that for her godlike combat ability, no one is immune to getting hurt no matter how powerful / what you're gifted with, not even mizuki.

so yes she has abnormal regenerative abilities, but not the extent that she will have a cut on her finger and it vanishes in two minutes, you know?

i'll also be making a wishlist (thank you livi for the idea!) for mizuki, and also going into how mizuki handles the inheritance of both companies of her biological father, lemniscate and sunfish pocket. she's definitely absurdly rich now, and it's highly unlikely her family and friends will accept blatant heaps of yen, so she'll be covertly helping if the situation is dire for them under anonymous aliases. she does want herself and date, to have a better living situation, more space etc, and does consider it quite often.

also, an important thing is my mizuki like her canon self, truly loves date as her father figure. it's canonly heavily implied before even bonding with him that she still wanted him to need and want her . so while he is vastly imperfect, as all the ai cast members are in their own ways, mizuki wouldn't pick anyone else. but she will pick on him. i did NOT like how they handled them both treating each other in AI2, as they were a huge core of the original game. basically i'll be working on exploring mizuki and fleshing out her bio after i clear bday asks, a few threads, and also working on her wishlist.

the way mizuki just immediately thinks of home being date. it isn't just that, it's iris, it's hitomi, hell, it's even ota . it's aiba, at any age, be it as a partner shared or just a part of the family .

mizuki rationally has so many insecurities about date, she isn't sure if he adopted her a lot out of pity because no one really wanted her, her parents certainly didn't, the pity of the results of the horrible case in which she and date respectively were in different ways in the eye of the storm. the way despite all her doubt about date, there is a faith that's small, and natural to have, because her trust and trauma is so vast it's suffocating her, mizuki doesn't know anything else. her friends she considers family. aiba becomes even more like family from what little crumbs i take from a.ini. she loves her and partnering with her she has learned SO much about different sides. it doesn't diminish aiba and date, it's just there's a new, younger date who needs her too.

but despite all these doubts, these cemented thoughts that she's an afterthought, something pitied, not even in his top three important people . . . someone he just felt obligated to save . . . she loves date. it's why she struggles to even work on at either age, openly saying the word 'dad'. she still has nightmares of his somn.ium, waking up and being pushed away. being told he isn't what she needs, and shoved three times.

she wants to be needed by date. because she needs him. it doesn't have to be perfect, but she wants to know that if she wasn't in his life it would matter.

....she wants to know she matters. that's why post-game she is struggling so so much. i also really just cannot stress that if hit.omi and date are end game then - why did we not get a scene with mizuki also with iris and hitomi and date? to cement they are a family regardless of romantic or not between the adults ?

this is why mizuki route in terms of growth and relational bonds, is canon to me, plotwise it's unsolved, but the growth and relationships should be carried over to be a true resolution route to me.

two steps forward, two steps back / meta.

even grown up, mizuki still has her doubting days. her insecure days. with the immeasurable trauma she's endured, the things that have been done to her, in no small measure of emotional harm and even physical, it's so hard to grasp if love is possible for her not in the sense of romantic even, just love in general. that's why she can take two steps forward and two steps back in her relationships because the trauma, the abuse, and while unless my a.i. rp partners would like me to adapt to their own ideas and we make something we both agree on? the realization that her godlike combat abilities are also a part of horadori, albeit with my own spin minus cloning and bibi.

she can easily become defensive and retreat into her sharp, snarky shell, despite having so much love to give, and is at her core, such, such a kind girl. so long, she has had nowhere to go with that love, and she has offered her cracked heart in vain to her murdered parents, who she actively left behind and chose with her own agency for a parent that does love her.

so there are times when those around her she wonders because of the cyclops serial killings if they just are 'pitying her' when she relapses into her trauma, be it ptsd, or dissociating, or simply reading a smile wrong. be it wearing an eyepatch or aiba in her left eye, (honestly the dates for my default just share them but i'm so flexible!), she has a lot of issues, and wounds that just won't ever heal.

it's why mizuki is so angry at cruelty, and injustice, why she's the protector, and it doesn't allow her to keep the peace because she LOVES. despite everything, this girl loves so bad, and so hard, and she's scared, she's the most fearless girl around, the strongest in so many ways, but just . . . love. being loved after a lifetime of cruelty. parsing her memories in an unhealthy way because it's easier to assume it isn't positive. when date and the others actively do love her! iris loves her! hitomi loves her! boss and aiba and even ota and others! she just....there will always be times when she's taking a few steps back, and hopes with all her heart that the people she loves will still be waiting for her when she takes two steps back to them.

she's gotten a lot better as a teenager, and she in my canon at least, in private will call date her dad. usually with barbs and teasing that is sharp but hidden in affection. annoyance, all the family things you get. but love acutely terrifies her, because she never really got to understand why and how, even when she was born with innate love for others, so much that her drive to protect innocents and those around her is so strong it doesn't let her keep the peace.

she just needs patience, and gentleness, not all of it will ever go away, and so much is burned into her vision and heart.

she needs someone to hold onto her heart and she may need assurance many times even if she viciously hides it. but even mizuki gets afraid, and insecure, and unsure.

but she doesn't stop loving, as sharp as her mouth is. that's something her experiences and tragedies have never taken away from her, in any setting, any verse, any story we concoct, castmates or not. she needs patience, and she needs time, and probably always will, but the love you'll get in return...is tenfold.

aside from one scene where aiba loses her battery, we don't really see mizuki with her blind grey eye...well, she only has one eye and whether or not aiba is her partner for a while, temporarily, or i hope, she gets a gold-colored (a bit darker than aiba's coloring) left eye for herself if, and i dread this slightly, AI3? she always loses her left eye, and if aiba is turned off, she uses an eyepatch because the prosthetic to cover the gaping hole is a washed out shell of her blue-grey right eye. it's more a washed out, dull lighter gray - silver than the dark blue grey of her right before it was destroyed and i'll be coloring in icons with these dependent on canons of other ai muses. i mean it was blown clean out with not a trace of it left. i doubt they can fully replicate the same color plus..ps won't make it look matching whoops.

she still pursues the detective life / problem solving life and my mizuki is extremely proactive in the HB case, as i'm very bitter about how she was advertised but given so little, and want to balance out what i think ryuki would be doing in my mizuki's storyline when she's old enough to join abis. she's obviously more of a rookie than ryuki is, and my mizuki actively struggles MUCH more with forgiving him on the explosion route. saying she has no stakes to be on the case in a.ini is....her dad literally went missing because of that tragedy. it's a huge driving force to arrest the person who took ANOTHER family member away, tearer, naix, tokiko and also, her own private investigations on horadori institute, which she still was sent there, but she was not born there, just there until she was three as another result of inhumane experimentation.

all the while running two companies or frantically trying to figure out how to at least, with the inheritances that were left behind by her biological father renju. while i do really find that aiba and mizuki as a team grew on me, since they were already like a big sister and little sister different dynamics from iris and mizuki ? and i do think she should have her own AI-BALL that isn't the same yellow but golden-yellow, to match her color scheme because her 18 year old glow up is amazing? she'll always lose that eye. frankly to mizuki it's hardly as traumatic as all the hell she's gone through since she was born, she's kind of...numb and indifferent to it. which is disturbing, considering she canonly sneaks out of counseling or attempts at therapy.

in my canon she's generally borrowing aiba for an unknown period of time and swaps between her eyepatch, that has the insignia in the artbook that date inherited instead, as i'll always cherish aiba and date's bond, or aiba isn't her permanent partner. she is her partner too, but not lifelong. a lifelong familial presence in her life? absolutely. but mizuki should have an ai-ball of her own, someone to bounce her snarky and feisty attitude with in a chemistry unique to her.

i do genuinely hope they give her an ai-ball that does LOOK a lot like aiba's coloring, since that worked so well with her color scheme. maybe a darker gold / yellow, and also her 'seaweed' shape is more like a rabbit, as that is mizuki's animal motif, like date's by fandom standards tends to be the falcon / cat. i also could see a small lion, playing off 'a lionhearted girl.' and because mizuki is both lion and rabbit.

this is her look when date needs aiba back or she's waiting on her own ai-ball. or waiting on having her blown out left eye adjusted to fit aiba. or if it comes down to it, both dates share aiba when it counts, as tama remarked on the diverge ending about mizuki and date tossing aiba around. but date and aiba will ALWAYS be my favorite ai and partner dynamic. i really want to see that for mizuki too! while she won't admit it, she feels more at ease if aiba is with date, because the explosion route whether he's missing long or short in time, and aiba looks after date, in a more...tactical way than say, if mizuki did. she's just as protective but would rather eat rocks than admit it easily.

it just...traumatized her far more than losing an eye just like renju and shoko and date. i plan to write a balanced team of two traumatized detectives, mizuki and ryuki, as both were done so dirty. mizuki will imply ryuki in her canon, mine anyway, and he will also be given the treatment i felt he deserved like she did so, so very much.

honestly? ryuki being someone who has helpful advice for her and them being a big team? after she begins to forgive him slowly for ...involving so many people in the explosion route? she's more receptive to his talents and experience. i just feel knowing mizuki, if you hurt her family even if you had no choice, it's going to take a while to forgive you or not forgive you at all. ryuki is the former, and forgiving him takes mizuki /time/.

Mizuki route we’re in it now it gives so much subtext / context to Mizuki’s feelings you only truly get here, all of it. Mizuki fully knowing what a family can be, Mizuki grappling with loyalty to her abusive/ toxic family while realizing her family in Date, her truest sense is him, and finally breaking down? Not shying from how much pain no person should bear but she has? And she’s 12 but not diminishing her for it. All of it is laid on the table. It doesn’t shirk away. Personally, it shouldn’t. Mizuki is a fighter and capable of such vulnerability and so, so human.

How she doesn’t stop loving her biological family but recognizes they couldn’t be a healthy family when so much of her route she was in denial and a mixture of acceptance. And then finally that little step in Date’s Somnium Mizuki takes, not him, for herself, to choose him and run towards that ridiculous detective and not him convince her to grasp a healthier environment.. but Mizuki came to the conclusion of her own choice.

And she’ll never forget being an Okiura. A part of her always will be! It’s part of her, erasing that would be wrong. Good and bad things happen, even unspeakable things. It’s still possible in someone’s life. And in the beginning there are implications that things didn’t get to that horrifying point! Still not ideal, but a few precious memories .

Good, bad, traumatic feelings and indescribable feelings… she won’t stop loving them. But she is going to continue her life. She chose to, and that little step changed her life for the better by her own volition. She needs for her sake, to learn herself.

Just one little step but it created the Date family: “ It has to be you.” And Mizuki Date is born, without letting go of Mizuki Okiura. BOTH exist. One is her past to carry, the other her future to grow.

Mizuki chose how she wanted her family to be like, an ordinary family, and how to be treated, not Date, even if his love for her did so much, and I feel I’m going to be writing so many essay like analysis on them and their relationship because it's so crucial to both of them. So much I want to delve into beforehand also and handle it with care, as the topics deserve.

i really wish we had a mama from ai.tsf. or at least someone wrote her / them because she's just so iconic. every line is gold and she's so authentic and human and you love her and laugh at her silly puns and jokes and i shake my head at her innuendo and just. she brightens the entire cast. that's what i love about the a.i series is everyone has so many flaws but so much depth that isn't a 2D thing.

i love how mizuki takes a while to warm up to her then she adores her. she isn't 'another person who could hurt me even if i could break all their bones subconsciously' person. it's just...a person. also i like to think she gives her more cred to say she's the 'cooler date' because, 'i don't compare you to fridges mama. stupid date does. don't lump me in with him, mama.'

as she gets older, while she isn't really one for alcohol because 1:) not of age 2:) she's a detective / psyncer now aka busy, i like to think the first time she takes a sip most of her family and friends are at mama's , and it's a big deal . she doesn't want to go to any other bar. because mama has established themselves as a safe place and she openly comments on how 'cute' mizuki is, how much she feels for her grief in the cyclops serial killings, is so considerate about her needs and feelings when asking date information about renju, that i just like to think one day she tags along with date / cringefail dad, and they take a sip at the same time, and date's just laughing his butt off at his adoptive daughter just CHOKING on her first sip before he gets elbowed in the ribs.

it's so rare for mizuki to show any vulnerability, and once squandered it's basically almost impossible to get a second chance without her assessing you every minute. but marble is one of those safe places, and i like to think if date doesn't take her first, (though she'd secretly be happy he thought of her, even if he IS a loser), her sister figure iris would and the friends she'd made through her.

i love the ambience of marble because yes it's shady but it's honest in what it is, and the music, the way mama is the heart of the whole area you investigate, not the clickable flavor text, and i just like to think it's safe there for her.

mizuki can't count past five fingers how many 'safe places' she knows in her life. but mama is someone she trusts, and i think in the ex.plosion aftermath she definitely visited the poor girl at the hospital.

marble just feels like home, and that's because of mama going out of her way to make it safe for a shattered, seething, brave mess of a girl and anyone, so i think her first two visits heavily impacted her, and i do like to think she visits if only to catch up on how they're both doing.
