The Carter/Stark handshake

This is a bit based on the prompt: Fondue

(and yeah, I made myself sad...)

On the 2nd anniversary of the day Steve went into the ice, Howard shows up at Peggy's house, and says, "Get in the car, Peg." They drive through Manhattan traffic for 40 minutes, crossing through three boroughs. Eventually they pull up in front of a fancy restaurant, and as Howard hands the keys to the valet, Peggy says, "what on Earth is going on, Howard?"

Howard offers her his arm, and says, "I miss him today. And I thought for a minute, I bet Peg's missing him too. And then I remembered how dumb it was that he didn't know what fondue was, and that tonight maybe we could actually have some bread and cheese, and tell stories, and remember him."

When they were talking about Steve, they hardly ever used his name anymore. Because if you said "him" both of them always knew because there was no other "him" that didn't require a referent.

Peggy held her mouth tightly, blinked quickly a few times, and then found part of a smile in a corner of her mouth. She nodded once, and took Howard's arm.

Trailed by memories, they went into the restaurant.
