framing the critique of Sabrina's album as "policing a woman's choice [of clothing/of art production]" is so disingenuous.

When you do that you pretend that this isn't a product and act on willful and malicious ignorance when you act like women(or their marketing teams) can't uphold/act on sexist ideals.

There’s already been so much noise around this album but Tumblr’s still out here calling any kind of critique “Puritan” like that shuts the conversation but this isn’t ironic, it’s just 1950s misogyny ads repackaged. Sabrina’s been playing with Lolita-coded references for a while but now it’s full on degradation, having a man pulling her hair while she’s on all fours like a pet? And the vinyl is literally a Lolita reference. But we’re calling that feminist and empowering? If it were really meant to make men uncomfortable, they wouldn’t be reposting it with saying “I wish more women were like this.”

This is softcore conservatism and normalization of degradation of women. It’s not challenging the male gaze it’s feeding it exactly what it wants which is submissive, pretty and quiet girls who stay in their place. Do not rebrand playing into patriarchy as feminism when none of it remotely empowers women or even critiques misogynistic patriarchal standards in Hollywood but actually panders to men. Choice feminism is repackaged patriarchy that aims to water down feminism as a movement that’s mean to liberate us.
