she shouldn't be here. even before leaving, there is part of cyriel who knew this. should anyone see beyond her mask or saw just how much of a state of disrepair her cane was, or worse, recognize her from the shop or worst, the streets where she often hid and took what the rich fucks of the town or visiting did not really need but she did. this place, this gathering, though would be a motherlode should she manage to slip some jewlery off of nobles. further, and she would not even admit this to herself, she wanted to see just what these kinds of things were like- her gown was something she had made herself, borrowing the finest fabric she could from the curtains hanging in her room and one of her own fine gowns and the thread from lathra to make it look finer than it was- and though is still looks slightly less than the others here, but it's the fine and vibrant scarlet color that sells it, she hopes-
that and the golden mask she had stolen off a vendor when she had talked herself into attending this morning.
even so, cyriel had been caught off guard when she had been approached, almost struck speechless truthfully. she had expected to be invisible, to be able to hug the sidelines as she took in the sight, but this half-elf had other plans and asked her to join him on the dance floor...
her feet tremble a bit without the support of her cane and from inexperience and she is letting him lead, trying to follow but she finds it oddly... fun. relaxing even, and her curiosity about this noble grows with every step.
" you know... i have never d-" she corrects herself with a hum. a force laugh, eyes closing as she tries to focus back in. she has her part to play. " it has been some time since i have danced, be it in lessons or at an event like this." she looks back up at the masked figure. " do you enjoy dancing? "
crown of midnight. cyriel dances with vax, @orphicflames at a masquerade.

Has SoS been updated recently?
It has not. I’m redoing the beginning currently for several reasons.
The passive voice. While Gabriel is a young angel in the first bit, the overall tone has always been a bit too passive for my liking. I ignored it initially as I anticipated that players would prefer to get onto the main plot. To counter this, I’ll be adding a section for what Gabriel was doing during Lucifer’s Fall. This includes more interactions with your nestmates and Cyriel.
Lack of knowledge of characters. While a staple of many choice games is giving you some preset relationships with characters, I think that given the overall pacing of my game it would benefit the players to experience the nestmates more prior to them falling apart. There was some confusion among several players as to who exactly Ramiel was, and the Trial scene is significantly less impactful if the players are apathetic about the entire event. Strong feelings, one way or another, are preferred.
Miscellaneous quality of life corrections. Again, for sake of getting content out there, I ignored some areas that I was less than pleased with my wording or descriptions. This includes a different interview with Sabriel and a revised interaction with Lucifer in the beginning.
Additional personality options. I would like to try and incorporate a few more dialogue options. This will be an ongoing change, and a key area of discussion for the future.
While I understand the desire to play further into the story, I think it’s more important to create a solid beginning before moving forward. Otherwise I fear weaknesses in the start will have negative ramifications to the experience of playing as the game goes on.
When looking for an update, the best place to check is the CoG forum thread--I update the title when there’s new content to play.

Even if they're not siblings, do Byron and Cyriel like, interact or associate with each other in a way? They look like they'd be pretty good friends
They do interact! Cyriel's very conventionally attractive, and Baron's a bit of a pervert, being a lonely 15 year-old boy and all. He wants to date Cyriel, but she won't go out with him because she thinks he's not good enough for her. So Baron sees her as a stuck up snob, and Cyriel sees Baron as a pathetic pervert. They're at each other's throats a lot.

would valynaya tabris and gideon cousland get along? what about cyriel mahariel and the other two? what are the differences and similarities in personality and choices between the three of them?
Valynaya and Gideon have already interacted in one fic! They get along, but in a…business like way. Gideon likes her fine, but she’s naturally hesitant around human men and he’s concious and considerate of that.
Cyriel has the magic power to endear everyone to him because he’s small and cute; he gives off a “need to protect” vibe.
Cyriel, Valynaya and Gideon are all very different people. Cyriel is a delicate, timid, and shy. Gideon is an easy going ex-play boy. Valynaya is a tough as nails but also very sensitive and needs delicate care. Valynaya and Gideon share the trait of both being very gay, while Cyriel is still figuring his sexuality out.
They would both take him under their wings in their own way. Gideon understands figuring out your place in the world and understanding your sexuality, whereas Valynaya understands the struggles of being an elf in the world of humans. Cyriel is also only around 18-9, where Gideon is around 27 and Valynaya is about 25 (iirc), so they have the wisdom of life experience to give him.
They are all morally very good, though Valynaya and Gideon are far better at making tough choices more than Cyriel. In battle, however, Cyriel is terrifying, and his tendency to lose himself in the carnage concerns the elder two.
All in all, they’d make an effective trio.

@dcvrsthrn ,vex'ahlia scolds “did you really think you’d get a second chance?”
despite what she is certain that vex thinks about her and what she has told her twin, it is impossible for her to dislike her. how could she when for the time that she was together with the other twin was filled with nothing but joyous praise about her. she knew so much about vex it felt, and yet, vex knew nothing about her, and upon meeting vex properly years after the fact, that was just fine with her. at least that is what she is trying her best to display. what she does feel now is deep fear and ease, tension, both at the conversation and the way that her eyes lock to hers.
hands clutch tightly to her walking stick and she looks past vex with an unfaltering gaze and tense shoulders- she cannot meet her eyes. especially not as she answers-
" no. " the words are oddly numb and despite her desire to appear this strong thing, determined and eased, her eyes fall down and she huffs out a sigh. she is not lying to the half-elf, she does not think that another chance will come, especially not here. but... sometimes she dreams and wonders. doesn't everyone with their first love?
she continues, eyes locked the floor. " i just want to talk to him. i think it would do the both of us some good. is that so wrong, a conversation? " eyes fall back to vex, half defensive, half... desperate, almost trying to win her approval as she had wanted to the years before. they were all different people now. but she would like to think vax felt the same unease as she did. hers would not falter, but she wants to free him of his.
it was all she ever had wanted. that was the one thing that had not change.

@stealthildan squeaks says ❛ don’t laugh ! so what , my voice cracked , but at least i was trying to talk dirty ! ❜
the moment that the words leave his mouth, cyriel is quick to cover her mouth, her cheeks dusting in a light pink flush- an embarrassing thing that he oh so easily gets out of her, like her smiles, her ease, and, as is clear right now, her unconditional laughter. it works, at least enough, laughter muffling a little as she shakes her head, reaching to grab his hand and squeeze it. “ no no you were. you were doing great. you are great.” his hand is squeezed, lips still upturned, but as she raises her glance to look up at him, there’s something that softens slightly. it shows in her smile, dropping, but seemingly brighter, it shows in her eyes, in her deepening blush that dances on her cheekbones, it shows in the ways that her lips part, almost overflowing with though, and spilling.
i love you. she can’t muster the courage to say it, at least, not in the moment, but it echoes in her head. like a mantra. she cannot say it though, not now, afraid, so instead she raises their joint and kissing it before leaning forward to kiss his temple, giving his hand a tug, gentle, but firm. “ you can still if you really want to or you don’t have to, because i would also be content to cuddle.or whatever else. i don’t really know how the fuck to do this.” she said with a chuckle, shaking her head. “ i also promise it was encouraging laughter and nothing more. ”

( @stealthildan explains “i need to get out.” )
she doesn’t need to ask - she wants to ask what happened, she wants to know the specifics, but she does not want to force it out of him. given this. given the look on his face. given everything, the last thing that he needed to do is explain himself, or even say the four words that he says. cyriel’s eyes hold her worry, but her smiles, hoping the sight is reassuring. “ then we’ll get out. ” she says matter of factly, pausing to look behind her at the store for a moment, clocking who all had managed to come in before reaching for her phone, sending some sort of excuse as to why she would not be working but be home late to lathra before muting her and tucking her phone away, one hand holding her stick, the other reaching to hold vax’s, squeezing it, smiling a little before walking out, somewhat quickly, but not too much.
“ you thinking walk and talk? or do you want to go somewhere a little quieter? ” she offered, head tilting to the side. “ whatever you want to do, we’ll do it. ” she just had to cheer him up. she wanted to cheer him up.

( ...veiled one ~ cyriel... she made me think that that place wasn't going to be bad forever. that maybe i could carve out a place for myself even if most people didn't want me there. but i was wrong, and she showed me that. not that it matters anymore, the only thing i have left that she ever touched is my heart. )
her eyes are locked on the ground, her shoulders tense. she swallows. “ that would be my mistake then. i was not trying to share that syngorn might be okay. i was trying to distract from everything else. ” one of may mistakes she has made. there is so much more she wants to say but she keeps it down, settling instead for a soft. “ i am so sorry for the confusion. ”

( she had only met the elf once, so many years ago, but vex'ahlia knew the damage she had done so well. and that was enough for her, enough to make sure she would never like her. not that she had expected to see cyriel anywhere outside of syngorn though, so this was worrying. hopefully her brother was too distracted by the rest of their group. hell, even mooning over keyleth would be better — and damn if vex hadn't expected to think that. " now darling, " the endearment sharpened into a threat as vex traced a single arrowhead. " i do hope you know to stay away from my brother. he's moved on, and is much better off without you. " ~~ @ignistelum ! )
oh gods, she should not have approached them. if she was being honest, her feel moved almost against her will, her heart saying that she had so much to say, she wanted to explain, she wanted to see how he was, how he had changed, who these people that he was traveling with were - of course it had to be his sister who spotted her before he did, though, cyriel feeling herself sinking into herself ever so slightly, though she tried her best to keep her head held high and like the words did not sting---
she had thought that he would move on. vax was charming, clever and kind, good, but that did not make the blow any harder. she stomached it, clutching tighter to her walking sitck and making her way towards the other half-elf.
“ i would simply like a conversation. ” she stated plainly, face relaxed, or she was trying to keep her face relaxed ( deception check ... 18! ). “ it will be brief. i imagine he does not wish to entertain a figure from his past for too long. i feel there is an apology to be made on my part, do you not agree? ”

messing around like this in the backrooms in-between going over loot was not uncommon, but this sudden gesure, hand extended was. “ i-” cheeks burned for a moment before she looked down. her usual confidence was faltering for a single moment as she reached out to grab his hand , looking back up at him somewhat shyly though she did not try to hide it- no point. she hopes her voice can make up for the fluster. “ is that something you learned from your fancy tutors? ” she smirked, letting her eyes meet his as she took a step closer. “ i am afraid you’ll have to teach me. i don’t know how. ” the words leave her mouth softly, almost unsure as her smirk fades to a small smile, watching his eyes for any indication of what to do but wanting to try.

( [ HAIR ]: vax slowly reaches out to catch a loose strand of the cyriel’s hair and tuck it gently and securely back behind their ear, letting their touch linger afterwards. (if the receiver has short hair, then the sender reaches out and gently runs their fingers through their hair to smooth it back. - @lovcalivc )
it was not her fault that lathra left the pair of them alone in the shop, nor was it too common for her to get her visitor in the day, due to classes ( cyriel did not go to school, she did not have interest in it either. she could read, she could do math, she knew all that she needed to know about the history of this place- what more could she learn from those places? ). she was meant to watch over till the old elf came back and, further, she was sure that if they went out right now they would more than certainly be caught trying to grab things and would not get a chance to go later... or maybe that was all just an excuse meant to clarify this in her head.
they had been messing around with the finger fabrics, the story slow as it was, was even slower on the weekdays, so she was making hats or veils, messing around and playing characters with each fabric she draped over her, clearly having messed up her hair in the process but she did not notice... until vax reaches out, that is.
the faintest of red color stains her cheeks as she leaned her head slightly towards the hand, whatever they were playing or talking about before lost for a moment eyes staring into his before they looked away, raising her eyebrow a little bit. “ if that is your way of telling me to stop thank you for being so kind about it. but i would argue that this is just as fun as thievery. if not more. ” it wasn’t, but she wanted to see his reaction, smirk spreading proud on her lips as she looks upwards.
