I love the view that Dean figured out his deeper feelings for Cas in 6 & 7, and the majority of 8 was Dean arcing out of his hero-worship and people-should-never-let-me-down neuroses.
And then.
Post-perceived rejection… (Remember: Cas threw OFF Dean’s hand in Purgatory, and cut OFF cupid’s hand when it was aimed at him.)
So. Late Seasons 8 to mid-12 are Dean actively trying to get over Cas. In s9, he’s off-key paralleled with Josie Sands and Abaddon. (When it’s actually Hannah who’s “the Josie.”) Then he transitions into a reversal-power arc, towards being force-fit into the cartoonish, dare I say ham-fisted Cain role and its parallels. (They spell out the parallel in a distinctly odd way, esp for SPN. Too on the nose. Prescriptive. That’s because it’s actually mirroring Dean’s power fantasy according to Dean’s deepest, least charitable, nihilistic wishes.)
In s10, Dean still appears hung up on Cas, trusting him with the blade and begging him to help kill him if he becomes disinhibited/loses his free will again. Also, “I’m glad you’re here, man,” and Cas’s awkward reply, “Another time. There’s a female waiting in the car.” In a way, Dean’s feelings and fantasies serve to taunt him. The Cain parallel itself feels like a taunt.
Dean may realize Cas “admires” him but it’s definitely not the way Dean wants, that is: not like a secret admirer. Dean is mad for the unbalanced power dynamics re:Cas in the past. Now in Dean’s power reversal: Cas gets the wife treatment and Dean gets paralleled with the powerful Cain figure. He gets to beat Cas just as Cas beat him.
And it’s no accident the Dean’s power reversal arc culminates in a reverse-crypt. Because that’s what Dean’s bitter about. (“That’s not gonna be a problem = You can’t hurt me anymore, not like you did.”) It’s rooted in the bitterness of perceived rejection. That’s why Cas bears the brunt of Dean’s anger here.
Afterwards, Dean feels soooo guilty for being angry.
Later…
At various points, he tries to reassure Cas he’s okay with and appreciates how things are: a best friend, a comrade, a brother. Acceptance!
Dean spent season 10 dealing with his baggage and hoping hopelessly, then in season 11, I think he resolved to accept things. He may have toed the water with sexual tension and short shorts at times, but overall he was trying to live with Cas and let Cas off the hook.
He also encouraged Amara to deal with her own baggage the way he’d worked through his. Season 10 was his reversal arc: him in power for once, with Cas getting the wife treatment and Sam’s corruption being highlighted for once. And in season 11 he was spirited away, dealing with being powerless once more.
After that was done, he tried to swallow his feelings and let go of Cas, the way he encouraged Amara to let go of him.
He may perceive season 11 as his letting go of irrationally wanting Cas. The car scene may represent him giving Cas an out. Even releasing him from any perceived obligations.
So when Cas shows interest in season 12, I do think that threw him! Made him so nervous that he started hoping again, getting all tentative with his little mixtape.
Then Cas returns the damn mixtape. (Burned again!) But instead of getting bitter, Dean says to keep it, it’s a gift. Then he mumbles another “we’re all stronger together,” lil spill to cover his embarrassment.
Because now, he’s fully accepted that he loves Cas. Dean’s feelings haven’t faded so he has resolved to live with them as they are. No matter how many times he gets his hopes up and disappointed.
But now, Dean’s more scared. In season 8 he was ready to tell Cas “I love you.” He spent four years trying to navigate those unrequited feelings and convert them into familial camaraderie.
It’s much scarier in s12 with cosmic consequences on their heads, and Dean with everything he’s ever wanted just at his fingertips.
My fave thing about it all is that Dean and Cas are ready for each other at wildly different points and hardly ever sync up in between all the disasters.

We're finally, finally moving away from our abusive family!!!! 🎊🌞💗
We could never have gotten out of here without the help of others, everyone who supported us and donated to the gfm and encouraged us the whole way through. You all have saved my life.. I could never thank you guys enough, there are no words to express just how much it means to me. I can live, solely because of the kindness of others, I can live and not be hurt anymore!!!
Officially we move in on Feb 1st, but the person we're moving in with has very kindly offered to help us move our stuff so that we don't have to buy all new furniture once there!! I'm only taking what's essential that I couldn't fit into the 2 bags I could carry alone, but I am so so happy to be able to keep the most important things!! Especially the stuff we need to do work.. We'll be doing that in just 4 days!
Transportation costs of going to look at places ate into the initial funds for escape from the gfm, which has left us with just enough to pay the first month's rent & deposit - but not enough to get transportation again, replace our bed (with a way cheaper futon, yippie!!), or pay for the gas needed to move the stuff we're taking with.
In order to make it through this final stretch, we need $433.45. I was hoping we would not have to ask for help again, I know everyone has their own concerns, but I really truly want to make it.
If all goes well, if this goes how I need it to, after we're moved in I'm going to find a regular job, get my driver's license, I can't wait to do all the things that have been off-limits to me til now. I can really start to live, like a real person, and not as a thing.
If you want to help us get over this final hurdle, there are a few ways to do so!!:
🧸🎨 Consider commissioning us for a piece of artwork! 🃏 We offer various options for divinatory readings, as well! If you really really want to help and don't want either of what we could offer in return, there is the gfm which can still be donated to which I have yet to figure out how to update the goal to show further need!! :'D
40/433 as of 1/26!
We have until 1/29, 1/30 if fate is so super niceys!!!

The real treasure
Geraskier, Geralt and family, rated M for implied references to chastity, implied/referenced sex but basically family feels
"Oh, come on, Geralt, it'll be fun," Jaskier pleads, all doe eyes as he waves a hand-drawn treasure map around in the air.
Geralt watches him from his seat on the sofa and purposefully ignores what his lover is saying.
Instead, he takes in the outfit Jaskier has chosen to wear. His white frilly shirt is left partially open, showing off his gorgeous chest hair. His open burgundy waistcoat drapes down just inches from where Geralt knows his sensitive nipples lie.
The gold chain Jaskier always wears glistens in the morning light shining through the curtains of their apartment as he stalks over to him. His prowling also shows off how tight his striped pants are, clinging in just the right way to his legs.
When Jaskier marches over and stands before him, Geralt can’t resist raising an eyebrow.
"That's not how you convince me,” he insists, even as Jaskier sits down on his lap. Sighing, Geralt presses pause on his game and sets down the controller in the empty space by his left.
He turns back to Jaskier, giving him his whole attention as the world zeroes in on the pleasant weight of his lover on his thighs.
"Look, you'll love it. You might even get an extra reward," Jaskier encourages, waggling his eyebrows.
"Hmm, and yet we could just skip straight to that part," Geralt suggests, gripping tight onto Jaskier's hips and pulling him flush against him.
Jaskier groans, responding by grinding down for a moment, but then seems to remember his goal. He tuts, putting a hand against Geralt’s chest and pushing himself back to create space between them.
"No sex unless you find all four keys,” he chastises.
He's pouting, and Geralt wants to curse himself with how easily Jaskier can wrap him around his fingers.
"Fine,” he sighs again, “but give me a kiss before you send me on my quest, my prince."
“I’m not a prince, I’m a pirate.”
Despite Geralt getting it wrong, Jaskier smiles, beaming like the sun. His cheeks glow and his eyes gleam. He's magnificent, breathtaking.
His lover leans down, forcing Geralt to lie his head against the back of the sofa. Jaskier’s arms bracket each side and Geralt lets out a soft gasp. He’s being teased and he loves it.
At an achingly slow pace, Jaskier moves towards him. Geralt feels like he can't breathe as inch by inch Jaskier's lips get closer.
The world around them disappears as Jaskier presses his lips against his. They move slowly, building in intensity, and Geralt tries to keep still, warring with his desire to lift Jaskier up and carry him to bed.
Patience. He needs to be patient.
Instead he focuses on the way Jaskier tastes sweet like an apple as he licks inside his mouth.
Geralt growls and Jaskier chuckles in that way he does. It’s so intoxicating and Geralt doesn’t want this to end. When Jaskier pulls back, his mouth tries to follow that delicious taste.
“Uh, uh,” his lover reprimands, picking up the map once again. “You take this, look over it, and then wait 10 minutes for me to get a head start. When you find me, you can have me.”
Geralt whines a little, and Jaskier laughs again.
“Just look at it. Get into the spirit. Oh, and you might want to get changed out of your sweats.”
“Fine,” Geralt grumbles. The quicker they get this over with, the quicker he gets what he wants.
Trust Jaskier to use the promise of sex to get him to behave. He must be so predictable.
Sighing, he looks down at the piece of paper. Jaskier had spent many hours last night drawing it. Geralt thought he’d looked so cute with his tongue sticking out as he worked that he’d tried to kiss Jaskier but his lover swatted at him till he left him alone.
It seems these squiggles are the result, and Geralt’s eyes dart up and down as he tries to figure it out.
A dotted line meanders through a town map. It connects various things: a round plump green hairy berry, a white goat, a black cat and a castle on a mountain. Scratching his head, Geralt stares at the map for longer than he would ever admit.
Then suddenly, his eyes widen and he realises. Scrambling up out of his seat, he rushes to change into black jeans and a tight-fitting top. Then he grabs his jacket and keys, letting the front door slam shut behind him.
Yennefer’s eyes crinkle as she opens the door, watching Geralt barge in without so much as a hello.
“What am I meant to pick up from here?” he demands, already marching towards the sofa and plucking up cushions, tossing them on the floor.
“Geralt, I won’t have you making a mess because you’re annoyed at Jaskier’s game.”
He whips around like a bullet, and sees how she’s standing, one clenched fist leaning against the doorframe and with a sharp look in her eye.
“Fine,” he grumbles, not for the first time today. “But please put me out of my misery.”
“I know for a fact I am your first stop. You’re just tetchy. Stop it.”
Sighing, he lets his shoulder drop. He’s not going to get the answer from Yennefer by demanding it.
He bends over and picks up the cushions, settling them down on the sofa randomly. He’ll never get them into the right order, so why bother.
Yennefer must know he’s at least making an effort because she nods and then jerks her head toward the kitchen.
He pads behind her, like a dog with its tail between his legs. Her purple dress trails across the floor.
She walks up to the teas and busies herself, scooping out several spoonfuls of chopped green leaves into a teapot, then fills it with water.
She sets it on the stove, then turns around and rummages in a cupboard till she finds two matching cups and saucers.
Yennefer always did like being fancy. Adding to the ambience, or whatever she claimed.
“So,” she begins, “how are things?”
He shrugs. “Fine. Same as always.”
“Does Jaskier always send you off on treasure hunts?”
Grunting, Geralt decides he’s not going to answer that. Silence really is the better option most of the time.
The water must reach the desired temperature, because Yennefer wraps a towel around its handle and lifts it off the stove and onto a wooden tray.
“I’ve missed our chats,” Yennefer remarks, rearranging the cups even though there is no need to do it.
Geralt really doesn’t have time for this nonsense, but what else can he do? Stand here and think about how he’s going to pin Jaskier down as soon as he catches him?
It seems mildly inappropriate in front of his ex.
“You know, I was surprised that I’m your first visit, but maybe Jaskier likes toying with you as much as I do. You’re hilarious when you’re angry.”
“Am not,” Geralt huffs, folding his arms for a second, then realising just how it makes him look.
Jaskier is always teasing him for being stubborn. Damn him, he knows him too well.
“Well, maybe not,” Yennefer concedes. “Doesn’t matter why you’re here, I’m just glad to see you.”
She pours tea into both cups, then hands him one.
It smells bitter, acrid, but he’s drunk worse. He takes a few sips to be polite, then sets it down.
He really just wants to get the key and leave.
Just what is Jaskier playing at?
His skin is itching and he needs to move, so he begins pacing.
“I really thought we’d at least stay in touch more,” Yennefer admits.
“What?”
“It wasn’t all that bad, you know. And Jaskier still talks to me.”
He does? Geralt scrunches up his face, trying to figure out why.
“Oh, don’t be an idiot, Geralt. We’re not here bitching about you.”
He grunts, then sits down at the kitchen island. On it is a fruit bowl filled with apples and pears and he picks one up.
“What was the symbol drawn over my house again, Geralt?”
Huh? Geralt looks up at Yennefer and is about to shrug, then a thought hits him.
Gooseberries. They’re a fruit. This is a fruit bowl.
He drags the bowl towards him and immediately begins rummaging through the apples and pears.
He empties the full thing and, sure enough, there’s a small silver key lying at the bottom.
“Yen, what’s this?” he asks.
She turns, cup in hand, and smiles.
“Never could keep things hidden from you.”
He picks it up, turning it around between his finger and thumb.
Is it really that easy?
He looks at her for all of two seconds, then rushes out the room and towards the front door.
“Come visit again,” Yennefer yells after him.
Eskel is in his garage, rustling through his toolbox while Lil’ Bleater gripes at him. The tiny goat is wearing a small woollen pink sweater and jumps menacingly at the floor.
“Just let me find my hammer, Bleater, and we’ll get out and fix that fence together, alright.”
He’s wearing his red sweater and denim overalls, undone at the top so the straps hang around his waist. A screwdriver hangs out his pocket.
“And just where do I find the key Jaskier has hidden here?” Geralt asks, announcing his presence.
Eskel jumps at his voice, hitting his knuckles against the metal box with a clang.
“Fuck,” he swears, hissing as he pulls his hand out and sticks it under his other arm, putting pressure on it. “That really hurt, dickhead.”
Geralt coughs to cover a laugh, looking down at the floor as the tiny goat scrambles over to him on shaky legs, screaming loudly.
“She thinks you’re a dickhead, too.”
“Oh, I definitely am most of the time,” Geralt admits, looking up to see Eskel grinning at him.
He walks over to his brother and pulls him into a large hug. It had been a while since he’s visited, and he’d forgotten how nice it is just to be here with him.
“You should visit more,” Eskel chastises, as if reading his mind.
“I know,” Geralt agrees.
They’re about to pull back from each other when something small but strong bashes against their legs.
“Hey,” Eskel greets, reaching down and petting the little goat. “Let’s get you outside.”
It’s then that Geralt sees it. A small silver key hanging off of Lil’ Bleater’s collar.
“Jaskier, you cruel genius,” he states as he bends over and attempts to grab the key.
Lil’ Bleater has other ideas though, as she runs off, scampering towards the grass outside.
Laughing, Eskel claps Geralt on the shoulder.
“It was my idea. Bleater here needs exercise and you’ll do a fine job chasing her.”
Geralt glares at him, but can’t help the small smirk at the side of his lips.
“You’re welcome,” Eskel says, following his excitable pet out into the sun.
It takes almost an hour for Geralt to finally catch the damned goat, but she seems much happier with him now that she’s exhausted.
Eskel had fixed the fence ages ago and had watched his brother look like an idiot as he chased the small creature across the field.
“I think that’s the best idea I’ve had yet,” Eskel says, walking over to help Geralt get up. “Fancy a drink before you go?”
“Okay, yeah,” Geralt agrees, wiping the sweat from his brow.
Another hour later, Geralt is knocking on the door to Lambert and Aiden’s apartment.
He’s feeling much less keyed up now that he’s had a couple of beers. Perhaps that’s for the best.
Lambert could always antagonise him like no one else could.
Did Jaskier really plan out who to visit when, or is this just a coincidence?
He didn’t get to ponder it further because then the door opens and sees the blonde haired lover of his younger brother.
Aiden smiles, standing in the doorway in his blue shirt and pants, and waits for Geralt to say something.
“Hi, Aiden, can I come in?” Geralt asks.
He doesn’t know why Aiden makes him feel like a meek lamb. Is it the way he stands, arms gripping onto the doorframe? Maybe it’s his eyes that dart back and forth like he’s about to pounce?
Aiden smiles wider and Geralt sees those sharp fangs gleaming in the afternoon light.
“Sure,” he agrees, moving enough out of the way for Geralt to pass.
That’s when he notices a silver key hanging around Aiden’s neck, sitting on top of the golden one he’s always got there.
Geralt has never asked about that other key. He’d rather not get the answer he suspects it is.
Aiden smirks, and, fuck, Jaskier is going to pay for this later.
Probably in ways that he’d enjoy.
Anyway, it doesn’t matter because suddenly he’s walking into the main room and he sees Lambert on his hands and knees cleaning out the fireplace.
“Who was at the door?” his brother asks, still sweeping up burnt ash with a brush.
Geralt clears his throat, and Lambert flinches, turning around.
The pink apron he wears on top of his black t-shirt and slacks makes Geralt splutter, and Lambert scowls at him.
“Hey, asshole. Pretty boy going to help or just mock?”
“Now, darling,” Aiden intercedes before Geralt gets a chance to reply, “we don’t talk to guests in that way.”
For a second, Lambert looks like he isn’t going to back down, but then he sags and stands up, taking off his apron.
“Just going to wash my hands,” he explains as he walks out the room.
“Make sure to bring some scones back, darling,” Aiden calls out into the hall. Geralt doesn’t hear a reply, and Aiden doesn’t seem to care. He turns to Geralt and gestures towards one of two sofas.
Sitting down tentatively, Geralt drums his fingers against his leg while they wait.
Aiden lounges across the other sofa, with a smug look on his face, and folds one leg over the other.
It’s a tense five minutes until Lambert comes back into the room carrying a large tray packed full of scones, cream and jam.
“You didn’t need to,” Geralt begins to say, but Aiden interrupts him.
“Nonsense. This is our afternoon treat. We just assumed you’d be a bit later, is all.”
“What can I say, I always aim to disappoint.”
Lambert laughs at that. “Pretty boy’s got brains, it seems.”
“Tenacity,” Geralt corrects. He’s managed to get himself out of many a scrape in his time, but he wouldn’t call that anything other than street smarts.
“Modest, too,” Aiden chuckles as Lambert hands him a china plate. The scone on it is cut in two, piled high with jam and cream.
His brother hands him a similar plate, then settles down by Aiden’s feet and balances the last plate on his thigh.
The two of them start eating, and Geralt follows suit. All is quiet for a while, until Aiden breaks the silence, standing up.
“You can have the key, you know, after you and Lambert have a nice chat. That’s the deal. Keep your claws retracted.
Aiden gives Geralt a wink before he walks out the door, and then it’s just the two of them.
“Funny it takes our partners working in secret to get us together,” Lambert moans.
Geralt hums, then remembers Jaskier lecturing him about using his words.
Fuck, okay.
“How are you doing?” he asks his brother.
“Fine,” Lambert retorts. “You?”
“Alright, overall. Though this isn’t how I envisioned spending my day.”
“Because you hate visiting family?”
“Because I thought this hunt would involve a lot more running around than chatting.”
“Hmmm. You’ve given me a welcome reprieve from cleaning that, anyway,” Lambert says, pointing at the fireplace.
“Is the pink apron mandatory?” Geralt asks before he can stop himself.
“Hey, I like the colour,” Lambert exclaims, his face flaming.
Geralt shifts in his seat.
“Look, I’m sorry. I’m not a great conversationalist.”
“Well, how about this? You finish clearing out the fireplace and I’ll consider our chat completed.”
Lambert throws the pink apron at Geralt, who catches it and frowns.
“You’d really rather I clean instead of talking?”
Lambert growls, showing his teeth.
“Okay, okay, fine.”
An hour later, Aiden comes back into the room and the fireplace is sparkling.
“Well, that wasn’t too hard,” Aiden comments, holding out the small silver key towards him.
Geralt nods, taking the key and pocketing it.
“I’ll come back another time,” he says, nodding at Lambert before turning to walk out the room.
“I look forward to it, pretty boy,” Lambert teases, and Geralt laughs.
Some things would never change.
It’s been ages since he’d visited his foster dad’s place.
The castle, as Vesemir calls it, is an isolated shack at the base of a large hill. He likes to joke that his home is only for the hardy.
Even if Geralt can understand the desire to carve out his own space like this, it must be lonely sometimes.
His dad is at the door waiting on him, dressed in his usual brown sweater and blue jeans. He could never understand how Vesemir did it. Most people complained that Geralt always sneaked up on them, but his dad always knew when he’s nearby.
“Hello, son. It’s been a while,” Vesemir greets, opening his arms for a hug.
It feels nice, a comfort Geralt had forgotten about.
“I’m sorry,” he says into his dad’s shoulder.
“It’s fine. Not like I’ve been knocking down your door.”
Humming, Geralt lets his father release him of his guilt.
Vesemir pulls back and then nods towards the back yard.
“Come on,” he encourages, “We’ve got wood to chop.”
They both walk around the house, trailing a well worn path through the grass.
Out back, there’s a shed filled with branches and short logs, all ready to be chopped up into firewood.
Geralt heads towards it and grabs a few logs in his arms. He drops them beside the chopping block while Vesemir sits down and pulls out a hip flask.
“Want some?” he asks.
Geralt shakes his head. It’s been a long time since he’s chopped logs and he’s already had some alcohol, though the buzz has long since worn off.
It’s easy work and he gets into a steady rhythm, working through his pile quicker than he expects. He decides to collect a few handfuls so he can keep going for longer without stopping.
The sun is much lower in the sky by the time he finishes, and it leaves long shadows across the backyard.
He piles the last of the firewood into a basket, then rolls his shoulders to ease his aching muscles. He picks up the basket and takes it indoors, dropping it beside the fireplace.
“Thanks, son,” Vesemir says. He moves over to start working on a fire, but Geralt just chases him away.
“I’ll do that,” he states.
Vesemir raises his hands in defeat.
“Fine, fine. I’m going to get another drink. Will you have one with me?”
It’s getting late, but Geralt’s heart aches at the thought of leaving his dad all alone. How could he have put off visiting him for almost a year?
He gets the fire going quickly enough, and then he settles himself down in the chair beside his dad.
“How are things, son?”
“Good,” Geralt answers truthfully, twiddling the glass in his hands. “How’s you?”
“I’m doing alright. I love this place,” he states, gesturing around the room, “but it gets kinda too quiet after a while.”
“Yeah.”
“And life with Jaskier? Have you two made any plans for the future?”
“Marriage? No. No, we haven’t discussed it.”
“You don’t have to, you know. It’s enough to just be together.” Vesemir says quietly, looking down at his drink.
Just how lonely is he?
“Would you like a companion?” Geralt asks.
“Sometimes,” Vesemir admits. “But it’s okay when you boys come round.”
Geralt nods, feeling that pang of guilt in his stomach again. He finishes his drink in one last mouthful.
He’s about to get going when he remembers he’s supposed to find a key.
“Do you know where Jaskier…” Geralt starts asking, only for Vesemir to finish.
“Hid the key? Yes. It’s over on the table.”
“Thanks.” He gets up and clears away his glass, then pours his dad another large measure before he leaves.
“I promise to visit more often,” he vows.
“Next time bring Jaskier. He’s a breath of fresh air.”
Geralt nods, then puts his hand on his dad’s shoulder, squeezes once, then heads out the door.
It’s only when Geralt gets home that he realises he doesn’t know if this is where Jaskier wanted him to go.
He cracks open the door and sees there’s a single light on in their bedroom.
It’s late now, and Geralt has to stifle a yawn as he shuts the front door.
Sneaking across the creaky floorboards is easy. The door to their bedroom is ajar, and he peeks inside and sees the most adorable sight.
Jaskier is lying passed out across the bed covers, his breathing soft and even. He’s wearing bright yellow pyjama bottoms, nothing else, and his brown hair is all mussed up.
Geralt feels tired from his long day out, so he creeps in and undresses. He places the four keys down on the bedside table, then frowns at them.
What’s the point in all this if there is nothing to unlock?
It’s too late to think about it. Instead, he turns around and slowly rearranges Jaskier till he can get into bed with him.
He wraps his arm around him, snuggling his chin into Jaskier’s neck, and lets himself drift off to sleep.
In the morning, Geralt wakes to Jaskier placing kisses across his face.
“Hello, beautiful,” his lover greets, a sly smile on his lips. “Did you enjoy your treasure hunt?”
Geralt looks up at him, trying to get his brain to work. “I got the keys, but there was nothing to open.”
“Wasn’t there? Oh, well. I’ll just need to take back these restraints I bought.”
His eyes widen instantly, and then he grabs onto Jaskier and flips them.
“Hmmm, I’m going to enjoy this. But before you ravish me, did you have a good time yesterday?”
Geralt nods. It was nice seeing his family again. Even Yennefer had been pleasant enough to him.
“Good. That was the plan.”
Groaning, Geralt grabs Jaskier’s hands and holds them above his head. He leans down and kisses him hard.
His little minx is going to be thoroughly taken apart.

No triggers that i can think of
Searching or an opinion/advice about therapy in general?
What do you do when you're struggling to show your vulnerable self with your therapist ?
I am comfortable with her but i struggle to show my emotions even though I can share my thoughts with her and i feel like i struggle to move on in general. (With and without therapy)
I guess after finally realising that I've been through a lot (traumatic events) part of me wants to accept and acknowledge what I've been through ... and maybe that's what makes it so hard to move on?
I don't think changing therapist would change anything... since i can't imagine being more open to another person
its more of a me-problem - i guess?
- i am glad of the base of trust that I've reached with her but its been 2 years and i still try to keep my walls up and I'm not sure if my therapist should get more offensive to wreck my walls down and reach my most vulnerable parts or if we are going the right way going on with care and patients?
I'm known to have trust issues and struggle with letting people truly in, i am used to being the "strong one" for friends and family. And therfore struggls with "my weak self"
Is this normal?
Or can others do the complete deep dive of vulnerability with their therapist and thats how it should be?
Hey anon,
I think it's important to understand that your resistance to be vulnerable is a survival mechanism and therefore serving to protect you in some respects, so I think it's worth recognizing and honoring that first. There have been times in your life where concealing your emotions, thoughts, and problems, were perhaps necessary, and have led you to develop habits in which you do that instinctively. Considering the fact that trauma survivors are a majority of therapists' clients, please know that what you're experiencing is extremely common.
Personally, I think that you shouldn't necessarily force yourself to be vulnerable if you don't feel ready to do so. There should be a balance of going out on a whim and trusting your therapist with tender things and being patient with yourself as you learn to trust your therapist. I know this is going to sound meta, but I encourage you to talk to your therapist about this, because they can frame the sessions to build a better sense of trust and comfort. I think establishing that will be the necessary foundation to everything else your therapy is intended for.
Every client has various degrees of resistance to therapy, and that's okay. Part of therapy is identifying and working through that. Some people are extremely open with their therapist (I admit, that's me) but it doesn't mean they're better than you or that it necessarily should be that way. Therapy looks different for everyone. We all come from different backgrounds that influence how open we are, and therapy respects that.
You deserve the professional care that therapy can provide for you, as long as you let it. Just take it one step at a time.
I hope I could help. Please let us know if you need anything.

harajo marathon 2024

Last year I posted about the Harajo Marathon in Minami Shimabara and how I went to cheer on my friends who lived in the area while they ran. This year I was lucky enough to get to participate in it myself! It was really fun but of course very tiring as well.
There were a few different courses available to do, including a 2km for children, 2.5 km for families, 3km, 5km, and 8.6km. Of course since I'm way out of shape, I entered the 3km with several of my friends, but some people in our group that are regular runners joined the 5km or 8.6km.
Tumblr media
If you remember last year's post, you'll know that Harajo Marathon also hosts a fun costume contest. Many runners show up in various costumes and it's really fun. Last year the other ALTs did a group costume of Mariokart characters, making the costumes themselves from cardboard.
This year we decided on a sushi theme! Many of the ALTs gathered together to create the costumes using cardboard and string, and they turned out really cool! Most of us wore white shirts and black pants, so that our upper torsos would be the "rice" and each person had a type of sushi on their back, like egg, shrimp, tuna, salmon, eggplant, and more. We also had one person as a bottle of soy sauce. Some people even put chopsticks and little plastic grass dividers that come in sushi containers in their hair. It was altogether so cute and fun!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Everyone started together at Minami Shimabara Elementary School and took a specified route depending on the distance. Each route took the runners past the historic Harajo castle, which was very beautiful. I wish I had some pictures to share, but I was too busy trying to desperately suck more air into my lungs and not die. If you want to see the beauty of the castle area, you can see it near the end of this post here!
Tumblr media
I honestly underestimated how long 3km was and did not prepare in any capacity for the run. I figured I could run for a good bit of it and take walking breaks in between, but it was actually pretty hard. But the scenery was beautiful and it was fun to participate with my friends, so I did my best and made it through.
All of the races ended back at the elementary school. I got a time of about 30 minutes, which was written on a certificate. They also gave us cold drinks and commemorative towels.
The race start times were staggered, so we waited for our friends doing longer races to finish and then watched the award ceremony. They gave rewards of local goods and services to the fastest men and women in each race, as well as to the winners of the costume contest. Unfortunately the ALTs didn't win the costume contest, but the ones that did were a parent in a giant dinosaur costume and their child in a tiny dinosaur onesie. They were so cute and I was happy to concede the victory to them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They had food stalls at the venue as well, so everyone could enjoy eating and being together after the race. It was really nice to see how the event tied the community together and allowed many people to come together. While running, many people on the sidelines cheered for me to keep going and not give up, and it made me really happy and motivated me to keep going.
Although I'm out of shape and didn't quite prepare as much as I should have, I had a lot of fun with my friends and loved getting to take part in a community event. It was a really nice memory and has encouraged me to work harder to exercise and try to join more running events in my community in the future.
Thanks for reading!

James Donaldson on Mental Health - Depression
Tumblr media
Understanding symptoms and tips for finding support Depression may feel like something you may want to hide or even pretend is not there. It may be the last thing you want friends and family asking about. But giving your mental health proper care and attention may be a healthy path toward helping you get better.  Being honest with yourself about how you’re feeling may help you navigate true depression or even certain days when you may feel down. Having open conversations may be one way to help decrease the stigma around depression, encouraging more people to speak up when depression happens to themselves or loved ones.  Learn about mental health programs for UnitedHealthcare members #James Donaldson notes:Welcome to the “next chapter” of my life… being a voice and an advocate for #mentalhealthawarenessandsuicideprevention, especially pertaining to our younger generation of students and student-athletes.Getting men to speak up and reach out for help and assistance is one of my passions. Us men need to not suffer in silence or drown our sorrows in alcohol, hang out at bars and strip joints, or get involved with drug use.Having gone through a recent bout of #depression and #suicidalthoughts myself, I realize now, that I can make a huge difference in the lives of so many by sharing my story, and by sharing various resources I come across as I work in this space.  #http://bit.ly/JamesMentalHealthArticleFind out more about the work I do on my 501c3 non-profit foundationwebsite www.yourgiftoflife.org Order your copy of James Donaldson's latest book,#CelebratingYourGiftofLife: From The Verge of Suicide to a Life of Purpose and Joy Link for 40 Habits Signupbit.ly/40HabitsofMentalHealth www.celebratingyourgiftoflife.com Are there different kinds of depression? According to the National Institute of Mental Health, the two most common forms of depression are:1 - Major depression: This is having symptoms of depression most of the day, every day, for at least 2 weeks. Symptoms may keep you from daily activities, like sleeping, eating, working and enjoying life. An episode of major depression may happen once in a lifetime or several times. - Persistent depressive disorder (dysthymia): This is having symptoms of depression that lasts much longer, typically for at least two years. With this type, you might have episodes of major depression along with less severe symptoms. Things like loss of interest in activities, low energy or poor concentration. Life events may also determine how, when or if other forms of depression develop. These types of depression happen under specific circumstances.1 - Perinatal depression: This happens when a woman has major depression during pregnancy or after the baby is born (postpartum depression). - Seasonal affective disorder: Appropriately referred to as “SAD”, this type of depression happens when the seasons change. Ever feel blue when the sky is grey? Or maybe you get a little down when the sun sets at 6:00 PM? It’s a real thing, especially when daylight hours are short. - Depression with symptoms of psychosis: This is a severe form of depression where a person experiences psychosis symptoms, like delusions or hallucinations.1 What are signs and symptoms of depression? Depression may show itself differently for different people. However, there are some common signs that may point to feelings of depression. They include:1 - Feeling sad, anxious, or "empty" - Loss of interest in your favorite activities - Overeating or not wanting to eat at all - Difficulty sleeping or sleeping too much - Feeling really tired - Aches, pains, headaches, cramps, or digestive problems that may not get better with treatment - Thoughts of death or suicide You may read this list and think, "Some of these sound like me. Do I have depression?” Keep in mind the symptoms of depression may need to be present for most of the day, every day, for at least 2 weeks.1  If that sounds like you, schedule a visit and tell your doctor how you’re feeling. Or, call the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s National Helpline at 1-800-662-4357. How can I recognize the signs and what can I do? If you’re anticipating a big life change that may be stressful, you feel yourself getting more anxious, or you know you experience SAD during the fall and winter, consider taking extra care of your mental health. Consider these ideas that may help you with feeling more content, less anxious and more in tune with recognizing possible signs of depression.  - Be around people you love (even seeing friends virtually may help) Spending time with family and friends – or even new acquaintances may help improve your mood.2 - Stay active. Exercising reduces stress, anxiety and feelings of depression. When you exercise, your body releases endorphins, which gives your brain feelings of happiness.3 Consider finding a physical activity you enjoy doing and make it part of your regular routine.3 - Eat for a better mood. Diet impacts how we feel physically, mentally and emotionally. There are certain foods we can eat to help support a happy body and mind.4 - Meditate. Meditation is gaining traction as a common practice to help manage stress and improve our mental clarity.5 - Find a furry friend. Animals may be more than just cute to look at. Studies show that having a pet can actually help lift our mood.6  If you're not ready for a pet of your own, consider other ways to benefit from time with animals, like volunteering at a local animal shelter, fostering a pet or even visiting with a neighbor who has a friendly pet.  - Talk to a therapist. People often think of therapy as a way to fix something that’s broken. The truth is, many people may see a therapist as a way to proactively manage stress and help to stay on top of their mental well-being. Prefer a virtual visit? Apps like Talkspace offer 24/7 access to therapists whenever and wherever you need. You can also look into what mental health resources may be available through your UnitedHealthcare health benefit plan. A note about finding help for your depression Natural remedies for depression, like the ones listed here, may work well for some people. However, others may also need medical treatment for depression and anxiety. That’s why it’s important to talk to a health care provider who specializes in mental health and depression. They may be able to determine the best way to help. Learn more about how to choose a mental health provider. You might also find helpful mental health resources that may be offered through your UnitedHealthcare benefit plan. What kind of doctor should I see for help? The first step in seeking professional help is to visit your primary care provider (the doctor or provider you might see for your yearly exam). Your doctor may do some basic screening and ask questions to learn more about your symptoms. You may also want to bring a list of your own questions. From there, you might be referred to a mental health specialist, like a psychiatrist or psychologist.7  There are also resources available to help you learn more about choosing a mental health provider. Remember, this is your health journey. You can feel empowered to ask questions that help shape a care plan that's comfortable for you.  Read the full article

ABOUT TATE | It never let me go, just pulled me by my hair and back on with the show.
CHARACTER BASICS
NAME: Sinclair Tate James aka Tate James
AGE: Twenty-Seven
GENDER & PRONOUNS: Cis man, He/Him
FACE CLAIM: Tom Holland
EYE COLOR: Brown
HAIR COLOR: Dark Brown
HEIGHT: 5′8″
DATE OF BIRTH: July 28th
ZODIAC SIGN: Cancer
LEVEL OF EDUCATION: High School Diploma
RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION: N/A
OCCUPATION: Actor, Former Child Star, Parker Wilson on the reboot of William's River
HOMETOWN: Lexington, Kentucky
CHARACTER HISTORY [TRIGGER WARNING FOR DRUG ABUSE]
Sinclair, known to the media as simply Tate Thames, gained his fame playing the primary supporting character on William's River as Parker Wilson. He was the best friend of the protagonist who quickly became a fan favorite, promoting him to more than just a supporting character but a protagonist in many episodes on his own. William's River went on for thirteen seasons, finally getting the axe when the strife between Tate and his co-workers became too much to be covered under the veil of scripted relationships. More than once the cast of the show tried to get it to end, but the network continued on. It cased a lot of tension as some members tried to get released from their contracts and those who were successful were viewed with betrayal and even jealousy. There was also the matter of those who played the role of snake who would encourage others to leave in order to pressure the network to raise their pay if they wanted them to stay.
The only way Tate could handle the demand of the network who had also placed him as a lead in another show that only lasted three seasons, yet remained successful, was through drug use. Child labor laws limited his time to work so he had to be precise, quick, and full of energy. When he turned eighteen, he felt some relief but still found his way back to his vices.
Following the end of the show, Tate maintained stardom but none of the work he did went anywhere despite how much he did. In his mid twenties, he fell into drug abuse as a result of tension between him and his parents as he could no longer provide for them while still surviving on his William's River payout. It took him some time to get clean and improve his name, but he still carries the reputation of a failed and drug addicted child star despite being clean for over ten years.
PRESENT DAY
Upon the invitation of working on a reboot of William's River, Tate has had the entire cast and crew sign an NDA involving any discussion of his child. His child's mother wants nothing to do with fame or tabloids but they came to an agreement to allow visitation through strict means, including a gag order. He believes that William's River will allow him not to get a larger following once again, but give him a small platform to climb his way back up— and get his parents off his back once and for all.
HEADCANONS
Sinclair was born and raised in Kentucky as the oldest of six children. His interest in acting stemmed from a need to escape from his home life, and he served as the entertainer for his family during their hardships. His mother was scammed by a talent agent various times trying to help her son pursue his dream as a child, and hoping to make something out of it against her husband's wishes. Tate and his mother moved to Los Angeles on their own for the sake of an audition, though they promised they would come home and abandon a pipe dream if it failed. Little did they know Sinclair would get the role, and that a small show would be the family's lifeline.
William's River became the sole form of income for the James family. Tate's paycheck took care of all his siblings and secured a white picket fence dream like the one on the screen. All of this, however, came crashing down when at eighteen, Tate started taking more of his money for himself to finance his growing addiction to keep his motivation for the Hollywood dream alive.

Cheaper by the Dozen; Belles on Their Toes, by Ernestine Gilbreth Carey & Frank B Gilbreth
Happy New Year!
And so starts year four of me rambling about books!
I don't have a theme or a count goal this year. I just get a kick out of doing this, so, onward!
I recently rewatched Cheaper by the Dozen, the one staring Steve Martin.
I knew that the movie was very loosely based on a real family but only in that the real family had 12 children. I found out that there was a book, and I did what I always do, I found it and read it, which lead me to the sequel.
The Gilbreths, Parents Frank and Lillie had 12 kids:
Anne, Mary, Ernestine, Martha, Frank,  Bill, Lillian, Fred, Dan, Jack, Bob, and Jane, between 1905 and 1922.
That's the hook of the story, but there is so much more to it than: Look at all those kids!
Other than the number of kids (which if you want to get technical after 1912 there were 11 children as Mary passed away at age 6. However,  she was always included in the count. This makes complete sense to me as she was still a presence, after all, for her parents and siblings).
Anyway, the Gilbreths were nothing like the Steve Martin family portrait in the 2003 movie.
Frank and Lillie both pioneered motion study, to increase efficiency in the workplace. Frank was a smart man, no doubt, and devised several ways of using motion study in his home with his large brood, making learning interactive and fun teaching his kids various things with games, and involving them in the day-to-day activities that made the family run. Lillie was brilliant. She earned many college degrees, including a Ph.D and eventually developed what we now call ergonomics. And was committed to her and Frank's motion study businesses. She was a loving mother, quietly keeping everyone in harmony, all of this while giving birth over a dozen times.
The kids were all treated as individuals, and their own interests and personalities were encouraged to blossom.
I don't think I have ever read a book where "charming " is the most apt descriptor, before Cheaper by the Dozen. A collection of stories that detail the various happenings,  from Frank being outmaneuvered by his own efficiency ideas, into getting a dog, to eldest daughter Anne rebelliously chopping her hair into a bob. The love of the family shines through and I was charmed from the first page.
Belles on Their Toes, is just as good, but has a different tone. It takes place just days after Frank Sr.'s death from a heart attack
Lillie had to figure out a way to make and save money, while keeping the family together.
Lillie's family wanted her and the children to move from New Jersey to her childhood estate in California. Neither she nor the children wanted that.
Various neighbors had offered to adopt some of the children to ease the financial strain. It wasn't explicitly said in the book, but considering how Lillie and the kids buckled down, my guess is that the response to that was a determined, if silent, "Hell, no!"
Lillie managed to put together an action plan by working with the children and continuing with her and Frank's consulting business.
She also got creative, opening a school to teach interested companies about motion study, efficiency, workplace psychology, and engineering.
Another way she got people to listen to her was to focus on "woman's work" like the layout of a kitchen. Saving time, by saving motion, by making the kitchen smaller. She's the one to thank, I gather for the way apartment kitchens function today.
Cheaper by the Dozen is really about Frank and the kids, Belles on Their Toes is about Lillie and the kids. Mother and brood worked together to tighten the budget, she showed just how much trust he had in the kids in general and the older ones especially,  by leaving them occasionally, when she had to, (the 18 year old in charge, of course with their loyal if excentric cook/handyman/whatever they needed, Tom to support) to make talks and generally convince the business's clientele that she could manage, alone, what she and Frank built. The 1920's and such being what they were she had to work so much harder to get people to take their heads out of their asses, than she should have.
The kids were committed to the plan. I'm sure that in actual reality there were bumps and tantrums along the way, but from what was in the book, all but the very youngest knew what was on the line, and worked together to make everything function while also making sure that the kids could still be kids.
It was actually the efforts to ensure that the family stay together and that Frank's wish that all of the kids go to college, that made for some of the best stories.
Like, how immediately after Lillie left for her first lecture tour, all of the kids came down with chicken pox and they managed to get better and keep it from her with only a little bickering and light sibling death threats.
Or, how to help with costs, it was decided that all suits which were going tobe handed down from brother to brother, had to be agreed upon by all who would eventually have to wear it. This led to a harrowing day for a department store salesman, who was probably left with a healthy respect for Lillie's serene demeanor.
I adored these books.

“because we are joined by faith as family, and your faith is spreading across the world.”
A conservation work
Today’s reading of the Scriptures from the New Testament is the 1st chapter of the letter of Romans:
Paul, a servant of Jesus the Anointed called by God to be His emissary and appointed to tell the good news of the things promised long ago by God, spoken by prophets, and recorded in the Holy Scriptures. All of this good news is about His Son: who was (from a human perspective) born of David’s royal line and ultimately designated to be the true Son of God with power upon His resurrection from the dead by the Spirit of holiness. I am speaking of Jesus, the Anointed One, our Lord.
And here’s what He’s done: He has graced us and sanctioned us as His emissaries whose mission is to spread the one true and obedient faith to all people in the name of Jesus. This includes you: you have been called by Jesus, God’s Anointed.
To all those who are God’s beloved saints in Rome:
May grace and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus, the Anointed One, surround you.
First, I thank my God through Jesus the Anointed for all of you because we are joined by faith as family, and your faith is spreading across the world. For I call God as my witness—whom I worship in my spirit and serve in making known the gospel—He alone knows how often I mention you in my prayers. I find myself constantly praying for you and hoping it’s in God’s will for me to be with you soon. I desperately want to see you so that I can share some gift of the Spirit to strengthen you. Plus I know that when we come together something beautiful will happen as we are encouraged by each other’s faith.
If, my brothers and sisters, you did not already know, my plans were set to meet you in Rome, but time and circumstances have forced every trip to be canceled until now. I have deeply desired to see some good fruit among you just as I have seen with so many non-Jewish believers. You see, I am in tremendous debt to those of various nationalities, from non-Jews to barbarians, from the wisest of the wise to the idle wanderer. So you can imagine how eager I am to join you and to teach the good news in the mighty and diverse city of Rome.
For I am not the least bit embarrassed about the gospel. I won’t shy away from it, because it is God’s power to save every person who believes: first the Jew, and then the non-Jew. You see, in the good news, God’s restorative justice is revealed. And as we will see, it begins with and ends in faith. As the Scripture declares, “By faith the just will obtain life.”
For the wrath of God is breaking through from heaven, opposing all manifestations of ungodliness and wickedness by the people who do wrong to keep God’s truth in check. These people are not ignorant about what can be known of God, because He has shown it to them with great clarity. From the beginning, creation in its magnificence enlightens us to His nature. Creation itself makes His undying power and divine identity clear, even though they are invisible; and it voids the excuses and ignorant claims of these people because, despite the fact that they knew the one true God, they have failed to show the love, honor, and appreciation due to the One who created them! Instead, their lives are consumed by vain thoughts that poison their foolish hearts. They claim to be wise; but they have been exposed as fools, frauds, and con artists— only a fool would trade the splendor and beauty of the immortal God to worship images of the common man or woman, bird or reptile, or the next beast that tromps along.
So God gave them just what their lustful hearts desired. As a result, they violated their bodies and invited shame into their lives. How? By choosing a foolish lie over God’s truth. They gave their lives and devotion to the creature rather than to the Creator Himself, who is blessed forever and ever. Amen. This is why God released them to their own vile pursuits, and this is what happened: they chose sexual counterfeits—women had sexual relations with other women and men committed unnatural, shameful acts because they burned with lust for other men. This sin was rife, and they suffered painful consequences.
Since they had no mind to recognize God, He turned them loose to follow the unseemly designs of their depraved minds and to do things that should not be done. Their days are filled with all sorts of godless living, wicked schemes, greed, hatred, endless desire for more, murder, violence, deceit, and spitefulness. And, as if that were not enough, they are gossiping, slanderous, God-hating, rude, egotistical, smug people who are always coming up with even more dreadful ways to treat one another. They don’t listen to their parents; they lack understanding and character. They are simple-minded, covenant-breaking, heartless, and unmerciful; they are not to be trusted. Despite the fact that they are fully aware that God’s law says this way of life deserves death, they fail to stop. And worse—they applaud others on this destructive path.
The Letter of Romans, Chapter 1 (The Voice)
regardless of what people think about gender and sexuality, every person on earth is conceived either male or female by their earthly parents (a mother & father’s combined “egg and seed”) and it is impossible to choose or to change anyone’s given gender, no matter what is done to the physical body. and it is sinful behavior to have sex with anyone outside the sacred marital bond (covenant) of husband & wife, which is the definition of marriage by our Creator’s design. becoming as “One” body with another is only possible between a man and a woman who are free to share themselves sexually. virginity is pure just as the “marriage bed” is pure. this is the way of the children of Light as True daughters & sons of our heavenly Father, reborn through grace (by faith) in the Son.
the spiritual truth of this doesn’t change with the world.
A note from the Voice:
According to Paul, in and by itself, the gospel is power—God’s power. The simple message of Jesus brings healing and rescue to all people. It starts with God’s people, the Jews, but does not end until all people hear and respond to its call.
The gospel reveals how right and faithful God has been all along. It begins with God’s faithfulness to His creation and His covenant people. Then God acts, finally and decisively, in the cross of Jesus. For Paul the cross, more than any other event, displays Jesus’ faithfulness to God the Father. As the Gospels tell us, in the garden of Gethsemane, Jesus entrusts Himself completely to God’s will. As a result, this good news brings faith and hope to those who hear and respond to its elegant message. Because God is faithful, He acts in a most extraordinary way. Somehow in the scandal of the cross, He offers His own Son in order to redeem the fallen world.
The prophets express God’s mind and will in the world. Sometimes their messages are a word-on-target to the people and powers of their day; at other times, they see and speak about the future. Their words not only predict the future—they speak the word of the Lord, which creates reality and shapes the future.
Paul describes the gospel of Jesus by bringing in the good news on two levels: On a human level, the good news is about God’s Son, David’s descendant, entering the world to begin the task of restoring it from the damage sin and death have left behind. But the resurrection of Jesus from the dead takes Jesus’ sonship to a new level. Now He is the Son-of-God-in-Power, the One called Lord and Master.
Today’s paired chapter of the Testaments is the 23rd chapter of the book of 2nd Samuel where David reflects upon the covenant God made with him:
Here are the last words of David, son of Jesse: the words of the one raised up, the anointed one of Jacob’s True God, the sweet songwriter of Israel.
David: The Spirit of the Eternal speaks through me;
His voice emerges from my mouth.
The God of Israel has talked to me;
and the Rock of Israel said,
“One who rules people with justice
and who leads them in the fear of God
Is like the morning light,
the sun rising on a cloudless morning,
and the shining grasslands brought up from rain.”
Isn’t this how God has raised up my house?
Because He has made a perpetual covenant with me,
well-ordered and secure,
Won’t He make all things to grow and prosper,
save me, and give me all I desire?
But the wicked are like thorns cut off and tossed away
that can’t be picked up with your hands;
No, to touch them, use the iron tip
on the shaft of a spear.
They are burned up on the spot.
Here is a list of the warriors who fought for David:
Josheb-basshebeth the Tahchemonite was the most powerful of David’s three most-honored warriors; he took up his spear and killed 800 in one battle.
The next of David’s three mighty men was Eleazar, son of Dodo of Ahohi. Eleazar stood with David when they defied the Philistines who had gathered there to fight. The Israelites retreated, but Eleazar stood his ground. He killed Philistine soldiers that day until his arm grew tired, but he never dropped his sword. The Eternal One gave them a decisive victory that day; and then the people came back, only to pillage the fallen.
Last of these top three was Shammah, son of Agee of Harar. The Philistines gathered at Lehi where there was a field full of lentils, and the Israelites fled from them. But Shammah stood in the center of the field and fought, killing many Philistines; and the Eternal gave His people a great victory.
At the beginning of harvest, these top three of David’s thirty chief warriors joined David at the cave of Adullam. A group of Philistines was camped in the valley of Rephaim, David was hiding in his safe place, and the main force of the Philistines was quartered in Bethlehem.
David (with longing): I wish someone would bring me some water to drink from the well of Bethlehem by the gate!
So these three mighty men broke through the nearby camp of the Philistines, drew water from the Bethlehem well that was by the gate, and brought it back for David. But he would not drink it; instead he poured it out, although he was parched with thirst, as a drink offering to the Eternal One.
David: O Eternal God, I have no right to drink this water. It would be like drinking the blood of the men who risked their lives for it!
So he did not drink it. This is the kind of thing the three mighty men did for David.
Besides the three highest ranking soldiers, there was Abishai (Zeruiah’s son and the brother of Joab), who was commander of the elite force of 30. With his spear he killed 300 men in battle and won honor as the three did. Abishai was the most honored of the 30 and became their commander, but he did not become one of the three.
And there was Benaiah (Jehoiada’s son), son of a great man from Kabzeel, who also did great deeds. He struck down two lionhearted heroes of Moab. Benaiah also killed a lion in a pit one snowy day, and he killed an Egyptian who was a powerful-looking man. The Egyptian was armed with a spear while Benaiah had only his staff, but he took the spear away from him and killed the Egyptian with his own weapon. These were the kinds of feats Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada, performed that won him a name equal to the three mighty men for bravery. He was famous among the 30, but never became one of the three. David made him the captain of his personal guard.
These are the warriors who were counted among the 30: Asahel, Joab’s brother; Elhanan, son of Dodo of Bethlehem; Shammah of Harod; Elika of Harod; Helez the Paltite; Ira, son of Ikkesh of Tekoa; Abiezer of Anathoth; Mebunnai the Hushathite; Zalmon the Ahohite; Maharai of Netophah; Heleb, son of Baanah of Netophah; Ittai, son of Ribai of Gibeah in Benjamin; Benaiah of Pirathon; Hiddai of the waters of Gaash; Abi-albon the Arbathite; Azmaveth of Barhum; Eliahba of Shaalbon; Jashen the Gimzonite; Jonathan, son of Shammah of Harar; Ahiam, son of Sharar of Harar; Eliphelet, son of Ahasbai of Maacah; Eliam, son of Ahithophel the Gilonite; Hezro of Carmel; Paarai the Arbite; Igal, son of Nathan of Zobah; Bani the Gadite; Zelek the Ammonite; Naharai of Beeroth; the armor-bearer of Joab, Zeruiah’s son; Ira the Ithrite; Gareb the Ithrite; Uriah the Hittite—37 men in all who were counted among the 30.
The Book of 2nd Samuel, Chapter 23 (The Voice)
A note from The Voice:
David has been brought up from his position as a lowly shepherd, the youngest son in the household, to the pinnacle of success by his faith in God and his own willingness to follow God. It has been an adventure fraught with danger and intrigue, and marked with loss and heartbreak along the way. David’s own failings find themselves reflected—and magnified—in his children. But here is one of the high points of the story of the people of God, united at last under a powerful and beloved king, and victorious against their enemies.
A link to my personal reading of the Scriptures for Wednesday, november 30 of 2022 with a paired chapter from each Testament of the Bible along with Today’s Proverbs and Psalms
A post by John Parsons about seeking and finding:
“Without faith it is *impossible to please God, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him” (Heb. 11:6). Note that the word translated “impossible” in this verse (ἀδύνατος) means powerless, incapable, and so on, which implies that faith is the key that opens the door to God’s presence. It is not possible to relate to God, after all, if you do not trust in his Reality and concern for your life. Indeed confidence in God’s promises is the foundation of everything; it is the source of your inner life connection and the answer to your prayer for healing. As our LORD Yeshua said: “Take heart; your faith has made you whole” (Matt. 9:22).
God *rewards those who earnestly seek him. This hearkens to the promise made to our father Abraham: אל־תִּירָא אַבְרָם - "Fear not, Abram,” אָנכִי מָגֵן לָךְ – “I am your Shield,” שְׂכָרְךָ הַרְבֵּה מְאד - your reward shall be very great" (Gen. 15:1). “For the LORD God is a sun and shield; the LORD bestows favor and honor. No good thing does he withhold from those who walk in trust” (Psalm 84:11). God imparts favor to those who honestly seek Him, as it is written: “and you will seek me, and find me, when you shall search for me bekhol levavkha - with all your heart” (Jer. 29:13). "With all your heart" -- with both your "good" heart and with your "evil" heart -- that is, with all that is within you shall you seek... You don't wait until you are "cleaned up" to reach out to God, but come “just as you are” -- in the midst of the messiness and sin of your life. That is the teshuvah (answer) to God’s haunting question regarding your life; you find “all your heart” as you seek God’s presence in all your ways (Prov. 3:6). Faith is its own reward since it imparts the blessing of Reality. The Greek word used to translate “those who seek” is a present active participle (ἐκζητοῦσιν) that refers to those who continue to search for God’s Presence and truth - even in the midst of the struggle of life. Like the prophet Enoch, this is the way to “walk with God.” So do not lose heart or throw away your confidence, dear friend, because it has great reward (Heb. 10:35). [Hebrew for Christians]

and another about facing fear:
“O GOD the Lord, the strength of my salvation, you have covered my head in the day of battle” (Psalm 140:7). We are in the midst of a great war for the sanctity of our souls, and the enemy is always fear. Fear amplifies our anxieties and magnifies our problems, since it heeds messages of unbelief and justifies despair. We must understand that fear is a false witness - an emissary that gainsays the truth and denies the power of God. In your struggle with fearful thoughts, take every thought captive and resolutely put your trust in the Lord. He will “cover your head” in the midst of the battle. Amen. "Confidence is the present tense of hope." [Hebrew for Christians]

He Is Able
“Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us.” (Ephesians 3:20)
Despite man’s arrogant pride, he is utterly unable to save himself or to make himself acceptable to God. Neither is he able to keep himself saved nor, above all, is he able to defeat sin and conquer death.
But God is able! The word “able” (Greek dunamai) is closely related to the word for “power” (Greek dunamis), both speaking of God’s spiritual dynamics. He is all-powerful, His ability is without limit, and His power “works in us”!
Therefore, “he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him” (Hebrews 7:25). Because the gospel of Christ is the “power of God unto salvation” (Romans 1:16), God “is of power to stablish you according to my gospel” (Romans 16:25).
Even when great troubles and sorrows and temptations come, He is able. “For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted” (Hebrews 2:18). He “is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy” (Jude 1:24).
In fact, He is able to meet every need of our lives and even to use us in His service. “God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work” (2 Corinthians 9:8).
Finally, “he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day” (2 Timothy 1:12). That day will surely come, but then He will give us bodies of glory, for “he is able even to subdue all things unto himself” (Philippians 3:21). HMM

5 Ways To Teach Kids About Personal Responsibility | Parenting
Why is it important to encourage responsibility in your children? It is often challenging to cultivate responsibility in our children. As my children grew older, I became more aware that raising responsible children isn't something that just happens. Additionally, it isn't something they merely "pick up." Accountability and responsibility must be taught.
Apart from school education kids need to learn a lot more from home itself in some schools they itself teach kids about personal responsibility like various  schools near Whitefield as well as Bangalore also even though for more of the parents it will be useful if they understand this below 5 ways to teach kids about personal responsibility
5 Ways to show Kids About Personal Responsibility
Teach children to try to do their cleaning.
Your child's education in responsibility may tackle a different appearance. While preparing a snack, you'll teach him to wash any dishes he has used. After he has finished the day's worth of schoolwork, you'll ask him to tidy up and store his belongings for school.
The first step in instilling personal responsibility in children is teaching them to clean up after themselves. It conveys the thought that the child is accountable for his or her actions. And when mistakes are made, cleaning them up is additionally part of that obligation.
Teach your children about family obligations.
Children must understand that they have roles within the family as they mature. If you've got more than one child, occasionally assign an older child to help a younger one.
Making each child liable for a job in the family is another way to teach family responsibilities, especially as children grow old. Choose one or two kids to handle the laundry. And hold them genuinely in charge of it. They'll start realizing that their failure to satisfy their obligation will negatively affect the entire family.
They'll comprehend the worth of their responsibilities and roles within the family. they're going to also actually realize that how they handle responsibility has an impact on others, whether permanently or badly.
Give them the required care
Because we attempt it when children are too young, this attempt at teaching responsibility frequently fails. regardless of how hard he tries, a five-year-old is perhaps not going to be able to consistently keep up with feeding the dog. However, it's reasonable to get a dog for your middle schooler and anticipate that with just a few reminders, he will be able to walk, feed, and water it. like other chores, we assign responsibilities to the pets in our family.
Kids can learn that, occasionally, they have to take responsibility for something outside themselves by being allowed to have a pet and being expected to care for it. Pet owners are often a great practical way for kids to learn to take responsibility, provided you wait until they're truly old enough.
Teach a toddler to accept responsibility for their actions
It's also very simple for me to ignore a child who I know should be working on her schoolwork but is instead watching a television program. Or once I pass the living room and see a particular child's game still spread out on the floor even though she was supposed to have picked it up. It's simple to continue walking at that time because I'm too exhausted to stop and deal with her. But promoting personal accountability is crucial! it's essential to teach children responsibility by holding them accountable for their deeds.
Some of the schools near Whitefield like Harvest International School have specialized not only in teaching academics and sports activities they also teach personality growth and responsibility
Allow children to experience natural consequences
This can be challenging! As parents, we do not like to see our kids go through bad things. And it's simple to intervene and make things right in order that kids never have to deal with unpleasant consequences. However, removing those inevitable outcomes prevents children from learning responsibility.
Letting children experience consequences can change as they develop and age. A three-year-old should not be expected to load her belongings into the car, in my opinion. However, as children grow more mature and capable, they will be held accountable for more and allowed to suffer the consequences of their actions.
As the saying goes, "responsibility must be taught, not caught." Use some of these useful suggestions to teach your kids to be accountable right away! Or else you can make your child or kids join in best schools that also focus on teaching kids about personal responsibility like that one of the best schools is Harvest International School it is one of the schools near Whitefield and there is nearly 3 to 4 branch across various places in Bangalore.

Birthday Wishes
Summary: Bucky wants to plan the best party ever for his young daughter
 Word Count: 2430
 Square Filled: Free Space
 Pairings: Singledad!Bucky x Female Reader/ Steve x Peggy
 Warnings: None really
 Written for @star-spangled-bingo
Ever since the mother to Bucky’s daughter passed away when she was a baby, he had been totally devoted to her and every year on her birthday, he went all out trying to make it the best one ever.
About a month ago, Tony’s daughter Morgan had a mermaid themed party; complete with a woman dressed as a mermaid. Bucky’s daughter Rebecca had totally raved about it and with her own birthday coming up, he made a note to take one of the business cards with him.
...
The moment Bucky walked into the building, he was in awe. The front of the store was full of costumes, dolls, plushies, pirate treasure chests, fairy wings and wands... every kind of fantasy item a child could possibly want and a lot of it looked handmade. Out the back, he could hear squealing and laughter. A party in progress, perhaps?
“Good afternoon, welcome to Childhood Dreams. How may I help you?” the receptionist asked.
“Hi. I’m looking to book a party? It’s for my daughter...”
“I see. Well, before booking a party, you’ll need to make an appointment with Y/N. She likes to customise her parties to the client. She’s currently doing a performance but if you’re happy to wait, she’ll be done soon...”
 “I can wait...”
 “Great. Follow me please...”
Bucky followed the receptionist into the back. There was a pirate party taking place with all the children dressed up as pirates. There were props and decorations keeping in tone with the theme and an incredible cake. On the stage up the front was the same woman who had played the part of the mermaid at Morgan’s party, this time she was a pirate, enacting a mighty swordfight with another actor. She really put her all into the performance.
Bucky watched her for a moment before the receptionist pulled him along and guided him to an office along the side. The inside of the office was just as cheerful and childlike as the rest of the place. The desk was lined with small trinkets. Along the walls were various photographs of the woman in different costumes. A princess, a fairy, a friendly witch... there was a costume for every occasion. Bucky was in the middle of admiring them when the door opened and the subject from the photos stepped in.
“You must be the gentleman wanting a party,” she smiled, taking off her hat and eye patch before sitting at her desk and encouraging him to take a seat. “I’m Y/N.”
“Yes, that’s right. My name is Bucky and I’m looking to do a birthday party for my daughter Rebecca,” he said, getting his phone out to show her a picture.
Y/N smiled at the photo of the little girl who was dressed as a princess.
“Tell me about Rebecca. I take it she’s a princess fan?”
Bucky’s face lit up as he spoke about his little girl. Everything that she loved about princesses and fairytales, down to her favourite colours, animals and mythical creatures.
 “I’m probably rambling now...”
“No, no, I think it’s sweet to see a father so dedicated to his daughter. Let me show you a few of our packages,” she smiled.
Y/N logged into her tablet to show him a few of the princess themed parties they offered. Bucky looked through the options before deciding on a fantasy type one with princesses, wizards and all things in that vein.
“Will you be having the party here or elsewhere?”
“I think home would be best... unless... here would be better? I don’t know...”
“Some children feel more comfortable on home base and some like going out. It’s really up to you. My job is to give your child the best possible experience...”
 Bucky nodded slowly and thought.
“She might like a party in her own backyard...”
“That’s totally fine. I’ll need to visit ahead of time just so I can work on a setup. Now, will you be providing your own cake? If not, I can recommend an excellent bakery.”
“A family friend agreed to make the cake,” Bucky replied.
Y/N nodded and jotted down a few notes.
 “What about food?”
“Yes, we’ll be making our own food too.”
Y/N nodded again and wrote down a few more notes. After agreeing on a price, a date and time to meet, his address and the date of the party, Bucky started heading out the door.
 “One more thing...”
Bucky turned to look at her.
“I like to ask our clients how they found out about our business...”
“A while ago, you threw a mermaid party for a friend of mine’s daughter. Rebecca couldn’t stop talking about it for days after that...”
 Y/N smiled fondly.
“I see... well, I guess I’ll see you when I come to do my inspection. Goodbye, Bucky.”
 “Bye.”
As Bucky left the office, he could feel his heart fluttering like it hadn’t done in a long time. Ever since his wife’s passing, Bucky hadn’t even looked at another woman. Well, he had looked but he had always been so busy taking care of Rebecca, he didn’t really have time to be pursuing women. Sure on occasion, he would go on a blind date now and then and Steve would babysit but that would be the extent of it. Bucky thought for sure his dating life was over but talking to Y/N just now... it gave him a lot of hope.
...
Time went by and eventually the day arrived when you went to meet Bucky at his place. Bucky greeted you at the door with a smile and ushered you inside. Smiling, you looked around the place. Pictures of Bucky’s life lined the walls and shelves. Photos of him with friends but most of them were of his little girl. One thing you noticed was the lack of pictures of the girl’s mother. There were a few of her before having the child but not many after.
“So, um... what do you need to see?”
“You mentioned a backyard?” you said, referring back to the interview you had a few days ago.
Bucky nodded and showed you the way. First, you scoped out the best place to conduct your performance then took out your measuring tape to size up the props you might need. As you worked, Bucky could see the gears turning in your head.
“Do you go out to different locations a lot?” Bucky asked, trying to strike up a conversation.
“Not a lot but it’s always fun when we do.”
“How long have you been in business?”
“It’s taken me about ten years to get it off the ground. It’s only been gaining popularity in the last year or so...”
“Wait, so you own Childhood Dreams?”
“Sure do. You see, I always believed childhood should be about fun and games before going onto the drudgery of adulthood. And I help out local business in the process. Most of the items available for purchase were made by local artists. I’m always willing to lend a hand when they need it. That’s why I ask about food. There’s a small bakery a few blocks from the building we’re located who does the most beautiful cakes...”
You suddenly were interrupted by something brushing up against your leg. Looking down, you saw the most adorable white cat.
“Why, hello there. Aren’t you a cutie?” you cooed, bending down to pat the snowy feline.
“This is Alpine. Rebecca is just crazy about her. She’s been a really big help ever since...” Bucky paused, feeling a lump in his throat and tears well up in his eyes.
Alpine trotted over to him and purred as he picked her up.
“Sorry. It’s just... ever since my wife passed when Rebecca was a baby; I’ve wanted to give her the best life possible. I try to give equal amounts of time between her so she can look up to me and work so she has the best things in life...”
You went over and gave him a hug.
“You’re a good man, Bucky. I’ve been in this business long enough to tell the devoted parents from the off-standers. Just by spending a few minutes with you, I already know that you love your daughter and think the world of her. Just make sure you spend a few moments taking care of yourself, okay? It doesn’t have to be much, just enough so you feel good too.”
Bucky gave you a soft smile, knowing that you were right. Everyone had told him as such but sometimes, it’s harder to take advice from the people closest to you.
“Can I get you anything to drink?” he offered.
“Actually, I should get going. I’ve got a children’s charity event I need to get ready for. It’s been really nice seeing you again, Bucky. I guess the next time I see you will be for your daughter’s party.”
 “See you then,” Bucky smiled.
He couldn’t wait for the party.
...
Finally, the day of Rebecca’s birthday arrived. Bucky had spent the night before busily transforming his humble home into a castle fit for a princess. He wanted everything to be perfect for his little girl’s special day, buying the most glittery, ruffled princess dress for her to wear, complete with a sparkly tiara. Bucky himself hired a prince costume and even managed to obtain a kitty sized dragon costume for Alpine.
Bucky spent the morning cooking, starting with a plate of pancakes for breakfast before moving onto the finishing touches on the food for the party. He had most of it prepared already but some of it needed heating.
The first to arrive was Wanda with her twin boys who were both in costume. The boys instantly ran over to play with Rebecca while Wanda was left holding the cake she had made along with her purse and the present she had bought. Bucky rushed over to help her with the items and after exchanging greetings and pleasantries, she showed his the cake.
It was everything Bucky could have ever hoped for and more. The cake was purple with ice cream cones decorated like castle turrets, topped with little princess and unicorn figurines and the words ‘Happy Birthday, Rebecca’ written in icing along with the age she was turning. Little pink flowers were piped along the sides.
“Thank you so much, Wanda. Becca’s just going to love it.”
“You’re welcome,” she smiled, giving him a hug.
Soon after Wanda’s arrival was Steve and Peggy with their child followed by Tony, Pepper and Morgan, Sam with his kid and it wasn’t long before all the party guests had arrived. The adults all mingled while the children played together happily. Right on time, Y/N arrived with her scene partner in full costume. She was wearing a knight costume while her partner (whom she introduced as Phil) was dressed as an ‘evil’ wizard. Bucky settled the kids in front of the makeshift stage and let the performance begin.
Y/N started by introducing herself as a knight dedicated to Princess Rebecca.
“That’s me!” Rebecca squealed in delight, jumping to her feet and clapping.
Y/N knelt down to be level with her, crossing her right arm over her chest in a salute.
“I vow to protect you from the evils of the kingdom.”
Suddenly, Phil jumped out of his hiding place.
“Mwa-ha-ha! I am an evil wizard and I am here to change all the cakes into broccoli!”
Bucky thought he was laying it on a little thick but there was a wave of horrified gasps from the kids.
“Not so fast, evil wizard! We will defeat you! Kids, if I’m going to beat him, I’m going to need your help...”
Y/N and Phil made an amazing pair. While Y/N encouraged the children and even a few of the parents to join in, Phil played off their reactions until he was ‘defeated’.
“You win! I will change my evil ways and use my powers for good!” he dramatically cried.
The children all cheered and clapped. The two actors took a bow and started to pack up as Bucky announced it was time for cake. The kids all raced over to where the cake was being brought out.
“Would you two like to stay for cake?” Bucky offered.
Phil looked at Y/N for permission, a hopeful glint in his eye.
“Sure. We have some time before our next appointment,” she smiled. Phil gave a big, childlike grin.
Once everyone had sung Happy Birthday to Rebecca and she had blown out the candles, the cake was served out. Steve approached Bucky.
“Hey, man. How are you doing?”
“A bit tired but seeing the smile on that little girl’s face makes it all worth it,” he softly sighed.
Steve followed Bucky’s gaze to where Rebecca was talking animatedly to Y/N. He could tell the smile on her face was genuine and not just for show. This was a person who loved their job and loved children.
“Is that the same Y/N you’ve been going on about all week?”
“I haven’t been talking about her that much...”
Steve gave him an incredulous look.
“You know, it’s okay to like her. Why don’t you ask her out?”
 “What about Rebecca?”
“Peggy and I can look after her while you go out on date. You deserve to be happy too...”
Bucky thought about it for a while and headed over to Y/N and Rebecca.
“Daddy, daddy! Y/N was the mermaid at Morgan’s party! She’s magical...” Rebecca was absolutely smitten with the woman.
“I see... Can I talk Y/N alone for a minute? Then you can open presents,” he smiled.
Rebecca giggled and hugged his leg before running off to play with her friends.
 “She’s a darling,” Y/N warmly smiled.
“She is... Listen, Y/N... I was wondering... if you’re not busy tomorrow night... if maybe you’d like to have dinner with me...”
 “Like a date?”
 Bucky’s face flushed.
“I mean, if you want it to be...”
 Y/N kissed his cheek.
“I’d like that. How about 7:00 at the restaurant around the from the Childhood Dreams building. They do an amazing meal...”
 “Sounds perfect,” he smiled.
This was one the best days of Bucky’s life. Not only did he pull off the perfect party for his daughter but he took a step back into the dating world with an incredible woman who somehow stole his heart.

After that Jake-Mac-Rosa fic, you dropped this queen: 👑 Next time, a Jake-Mac-Holt piece?
Oh dang, THAT's where I left it. Thank you for that. 🤪
Grandpa Holt is always a pleasure to write, but let's try for some Dad Holt too...
Tumblr media
"Is everything alright, Peralta?"
Jake has been sitting off to the side of the group for a while now, so Holt finds it necessary to inquire. He's not used to the eager detective being so closed off and quiet unless something is wrong, and nothing he can think of right now strikes him as 'wrong': they have been celebrating the end of a rather arduous case for Diaz and Boyle, and Peralta had been as helpful as he could be as a tertiary, which was not his preferred position at all. The first round at Shaw's had been paid by himself as Captain, obviously, and the next by Diaz, so Boyle has promised to shoulder the third, were it to happen. Ergo Peralta could not be thinking about his usual money problems, which have lessened anyway ever since Santiago took over his budgeting.
That means something else entirely must be 'wrong' in order for Jake to keep out of the conversation, only reply when he is mentioned by name, and drift off to a corner of the bar while the other congregate around the various game options of the room.
"I'm good, Captain, thanks." Jake answers with a smile and an obvious lie, so Holt doesn't even bother replying, just raises one of his eyebrows a quarter of an inch, which he knows usually gets him results with Peralta. The ensuing sigh shows that it is still working.
"It's just..." Jake shrugs and rubs the back of his neck, another tell of his discomfort. "This is my first night out alone since the baby."
"Indeed." Holt replies. "I remember your phone call to Amy to inform her you would be back late today."
"Yeah." His hand is still on his neck, the other one clutched around his half empty beer bottle. "She told me to have fun. But..uh... I still kinda feel like I shouldn't be here."
"Do you think having a child robs you of autonomity? I know I am not speaking from experience, here, but it does seem to me like you are allowed to enjoy time away from your family, especially if your spouse insists you do."
"Getting drunk at a bar while my kid might be crying at home doesn't feel like the responsible thing to do, is all."
"Ah, I see." Holt nods, and he does see - he actually sees a lot more than what Jake might be trying to imply in his statement. He remembers how he used to self-medicate with alcohol in the past, after ending his relationship with that defense attorney, or even before, while feeling heartbroken over Santiago. He also remembers anecdotes about his father's drinking, not from Peralta himself, obviously, but from the rest of the squad, whenever Jake would cancel on a promised night out after Roger Peralta's visits. As much as Holt hates idioms, one of his most despised is probably 'the apple doesn't fall far from the tree', and Jake seems to fear it as well.
"Here is my solution, then, if you are willing to listen." Jake looks up at Holt as he's standing in front of him, and his hand drops from his neck. "You make the beer you are currently drinking your last for the night, and spend some quality time with your colleagues instead, enjoying a few parlour games, and then you head home at an agreeable time and still see your child before he falls asleep."
Jake grins and takes a sip of his beer.
"Sounds like a plan, Cap." He nods, and Holt doesn't ignore the fact that Jake has been using this shortened nickname for him a lot lately, and how eerily similar it sounds to 'Dad' in his voice.
(An hour later, he receives a picture on his cellphone from Peralta: The man himself, asleep on his couch, with his infant son equally asleep on his chest. Santiago must have commandeered his phone, and Holt is glad for it.)
-*-
"Grampa!"
The sound of that little voice echoes through the hallway as loudly as the ensuing footsteps, and Holt feels something warm and solid wrap around his legs.
"Hello, McClane." He smiles down at the little boy currently clutching his knees, and he smiles back before raising his arms in an obvious demand to be lifted up. Holt obeys it immediately.
He notices Mac looks surprisingly tired for an otherwise very energetic two year old, and Amy, who's now following him to Holt's side, looks equally exhausted.
"Good afternoon, Captain. I'm so sorry, I should've messaged you that I have to bring Mac in for an hour, the babysitter cancelled and the day care couldn't keep him longer than-"
"It is quite alright, Santiago. McClane knows how to behave himself at the precinct, right?" He gives the little boy in his arms a look, and receives a strong and eager nod in reply, the curls on his head bouncing back and forth. If anyone were ever to question Peralta's parentage, that alone would classify them as an imbecile. "I can watch him for the time being, if you have paperwork you need to get in order before leaving for the day."
"God, Captain Holt, would you- that would be so- I was going to ask Rosa, because I know she's at her desk-"
Amy seems far more frazzled than usual, and Holt realises that her regular schedule must be in quite a disarray, considering she has been a single parent for about a week now. Mac must not have been making it easy for her, either, nor must the baby currently growing in her stomach, which has started to show about a month ago, at which point they finally informed the squad about it (when everyone had already figured it out just like last time).
"RoRo!" Mac yells, happily, almost leaning out of Holt's arms, but he quickly hugs him tighter.
"Your aunt Rosa is working, McClane, and we should not interrupt her. We can spend the time in my office, and you can draw if you would like."
"Roro working." He echoes like a little parrot. "Like Daddy."
"That's right." Holt has learned from the parenting homepages he's visited that you are to encourage a child trying to talk and string together a coherent topic, no matter how long it might take.
"Daddy's working away." Mac continues, and out of the corner of his eye Holt sees Amy's forehead wrinkle in worry.
"Yes, your father is in New Jersey for the week to work on a special case." It's not a dangerous case at all, rather a boring standard task that happened to involve some out-of-state suspects, but Jake had still been trying to hand off that trip to anyone who might be willing to help him out. Seeing his son with bags under his eyes and his wife with stresslines around her mouth and her hand on her belly, Holt understands why.
"He comes back." Mac says next, and it is a statement, but the look in his eyes makes it a question, and Holt is quick to answer. He's glad that he has a definite answer to that, instead of the empty promises and assurances he sometimes has to make as the head of a police department.
"Yes, your father will be back soon. In two days, in fact."
Mac holds up two grubby little fingers, and Holt nods with so much fervor it surprises himself.
"Very good, that is two. Only two days and two nights until your father is back home." The worry in Mac's eyes seems to dimish a little at that as he stares at his own fingers. "If we go to my office, we can check on the calendar exactly how long that is." He barely waits for another nod before taking the diaper bag out of Santiago's hands, who whispers a quiet, but relieved "Thank you" to him. He understands again that it means far more than to thank him for taking care of the child for an hour so.
(If he uses that hour to assure Mac several times that no matter what, his father will always find a way back to him with far more emotion in his voice than he'd usually use, well, no one needs to know. Peralta certainly seems happy about the picture he sends him of Mac with his captain's hat behind his desk.)
-*-
"Congratulations." Holt's hand on his shoulder is heavy, but not uncomfortably so, and it gives a quick squeeze before dropping.
They've done the whole customary introduction to the newborn baby, the apparently necessary picture round, and now Kevin is having an amicable chat with Amy in her hospital bed. They've waited two days for their official visit, to give the new parents a chance to get at least a few of their bearings. (Holt was there merely an hour after the birth, of course, with the rest of the squad, but that was a moment of joyful chaos and many voices.) Now the room is filled with an almost serene quiet, Amy's and Kevin's voices low and comfortable in the background as Holt watches the man he truly considers a son hold up his new granddaughter.
"Do you want to hold her again? I know you already did for the photos but-"
Holt only nods and takes the infant out of his hands with perfect ease. He's more used to a wriggling toddler now, but he still clearly remembers the days when Mac was equally quiet and frail in his arms. The little one in them now is asleep amidst all that is happening, her tiny mouth open just a fraction, and he feels her arm bump against his chest while she seems to be having a dream.
"She is as perfect as her older brother, Jake."
"Yeah." Jake smiles, and there's nothing of that boisterous, loud, cocky detective grin left in it that he used to know. It is soft and kind and full of love, and it might be one of Holt's favourite expressions. "Amy did a superb job again."
"As did you."
"I'm sure I don't gotta explain this to you, Cap, but I didn't really do much." Jake jokes, and Holt can tell he's trying to divert the attention to a simpler topic, but sometimes things must be said.
"You do a lot, Jacob." He continues, then. "Far more than a lot of fathers do. Far more than many would expect of you. And you do it all perfectly right, with heart and determination."
Jake nods, swallowing down a lump in his throat, it seems, and it might be a step too far for his already emotional state, but Holt feels like it needs to accompany his accolades.
"I am very proud of you, son."
Jake is very obviously fighting back tears as he replies.
"Thanks, dad."
The little girl in Holt's arms stirs right at this moment, and Jake seems to want to interject immediately in fear that she'll start crying, but she simply stares up at Holt with impossibly big, brown eyes for the first time. And he realises, just as he did two years ago when Mac's little hand tightened around his finger for the first time, that there is a child in this world that he would literally do anything for. There are four of them now, even if two of them have not fallen under the category of a child for several decades.
"Hello, Maya." He says to the little face that seems to be inspecting him. "I'm Captain Raymond Holt. Your grandfather."
He looks up at Kevin and Amy, who've stopped their conversation while Amy is lifting her phone in their direction, and then at Jake, who's looking at Maya as well with shining eyes. Then he looks back down at Maya, stretching her arms out of her swaddle as if she's reaching for him.
"You are a very lucky little girl."

That headcanon post about the EnNatsu kids made me think of my other OTPs and ships as parents, so I decided to write briefly about what I think they would be like as parents. I'll try to keep this one shorter than the headcanon post.
FubuHaru
Shirou has a bittersweet feeling when his kids end up being twins, and identical ones at that. After the delivery, he's crying both from happiness and also sorrow as every memory that he's shared with Atsuya flashes in his mind. Haruna and Kidou are really understanding about it.
They're both boys, one of whom Shirou names "Atsuya" as homage to his brother. They name the other twin Akira, after Haruna and Kidou's biological father.
Haruna captures every single moment on camera. They have a file on computer solely dedicated to the twin's pictures and videos. Aside from her enthusiasm, she's a pretty chill parent, unlike Shirou which frets about literally everything. Seeing the twins reminds him so much of him and his brother that he can't help but worry that the same fate might befall them. The thought of his kids going through that keeps him up some nights.
Haruna tries her best to reassure him that nothing would happen if he let then play in the garden outside on their own or minor stuff like that, but she also understands the trauma that makes him so vigilant. It hurts to see her worried about it, the same way it hurts whenever she thinks about all that Shirou went through at such a young age, but she does her best to help.
Both make a point to always assure the twins that they can take to either of them if they ever have any problems. The kids do know that and talk to both of them about their problems. It's a very communicative household and Shirou and Haruna tey their best to keep it that way. Shirou knows what it's like to feel like you're all alone with your problems even when surrounded by so many people and Haruna knows what can happen by the lack of communication (she had ended up resenting Kidou for not contacting her from their childhood to junior high, after all)
Still, when it comes to relationship advice, both twins go exclusively to Shirou because Haruna makes such a big deal out of it that it's embarrassing.
Hiroto
I don't really have a ship for Hiroto. HiroMido is probably the most popular ship for him, but it's a huge NOTP for me. Still, I like them thought of Hiroto being a single parent to Kariya.
We all know that Kariya has trust issues, so I imagine that it took a while for him to warm up to Hiroto. Hiroto is very familiar with how this all works, so he's extremely patient and kind, so much so that Kariya is suspicious initially before he's eventually convinced that Hiroto's attitude is genuine.
I headcanon that Hiroto adoptes Kariya before his appearance in GO, which is why Kariya has to transfer to Raimon since it's closer.
I imagine Hiroto to be a very patient parent. He takes extreme care to not end up hurting Kariya somehow like his father did with him. He encourages Kariya to be his own person and to not change himself for anyone's sake, because he knows what it's like to be someone you're not (the whole thing with Kira Hiroto)
Hiroto is extremely patient and kind with Kariya's trauma and slow healing. He loves to show his affection in various ways, like ruffling his hair, treating him to ice cream when Kariya deserves it for doing well in either school or soccer or his general behavior, giving him tiny gifts every now and then etc. He also makes sure to attend as many of Kariya's matches as he can.
Hiroto's open affection leaves Kariya flustered and he peetends to gurmble, but Hiroto can see the small smile he has every time.
Hiroto tries to be involved in Kariya's life as much as he can, sometimes becoming a bit too nosy, which can irritate Kariya.
It's a slow progression, but they eventually end up truly considering each other family.
Domon And Aki
Is there a name for this ship?
Anyway, I imagine Aki to be a supportive parent who, despite her worries and fears, allows her children to have the freedom to explore their own interests and hobbies. Still, she can sometimes worry a bit too much which sometimes leads her time be unreasonably strict at times.
When Aki got her first child, Tenma was happy for her but also rather worried. He's lived with Aki since he was a kid and he's afraid that things will change after this. Aki is quick to reassure him that while things will change a lot, she will always be around for him. She tells him that the new child is technically her first but they feel like the second because to her, Tenma is her first kid.
Domon is the easygoing parent. He's the type to sneak the children snacks and allow them to stay past there bed time if Aki's not home. Still, while he's hard to anger, he is scary when he's mad.
----
And that's about it. I ship IchiRika as well, but my interpretation is so far from canon that I decided not to include it. I hope you enjoyed these.

candy bear, sweetie pie (i wanna be adored)
Tumblr media
cw: feederism, belly kink, weight gain, burping, brief mention of body image regarding jimin’s family, streamer!jimin.
“hello there... it’s manggae.”
jimin’s voice was low, almost a whisper, as he laid back on one of his hands and appraised the rapidly growing influx of messages on his live’s chat. they weren’t quick enough that jimin would lose track, but nowadays he would have to scroll back up to catch something he missed a few times. his audience had been growing.
“you missed me? cute. it’s only been a week.” his full lips stretched in a smile his viewers would be able to see and fawn over. jimin always positioned himself carefully, camera catching him perfectly from the lips down — not because he didn’t want the audience to see his face, they had seen him a handful of times now, but because he wanted his body to be the main focus.
and his body explained why his nickname on the streaming website was manggaetteok.
jimin had always liked to eat. growing up in an extremely rich family, food had never been an issue — until it started being taken away from him by parents and nutritionists who believed his chubby cheeks were something to be ashamed of. jimin spent his teenage years on diets, pills and stinky gym bathrooms. he almost started hating his body as much as his parents did.
until he moved out. was moved out, to be more precise — an apartment bought for him in the heart of gangnam, too big for just one person, way under-decorated to look like a homel. jimin was twenty and out of his parents' claws for the first time in his life.
it didn’t take him more than a year to figure out the most crucial things about himself: he prefered boys over girls, silk robes and lace over black pressed suits, and he very much prefered to stay home and order food to going out to a new bar every friday night.
jimin turned into the perfect definition of a homebody; and, soon enough, of a foodie.
he didn’t hold back when it came to food, and the results of his indulgence after years of restriction showed on his body rather quickly. at least his parents were right about one thing — he really was prone to gaining weight, and a lot of it.
sitting now on the floor of one of the three bedroom’s in his apartment, the one he had slowly decorated to be his streaming studio, jimin weight gain is nothing if not noticeable. nicely placed down on his fluffy baby pink carpet with thighs spread as wide as they would go, his belly hanged almost touching the floor. it looks so soft and pudgy now, bulging forward in an almost perfect round dome even when it’s empty. he has pink stretch marks from the top of his jiggly thighs to right under his belly button, which has gotten deep enough for jimin to fit and poke his entire pinky finger inside. his flabby tits rest nicely on top of his swollen gut, round puffy nipples a pretty light brown on display.
“remember when i’d dress up all cute and pretty for these lives?” jimin practically purred at the camera, both hands heading to his breasts so he could squeeze and jiggle them while chuckling. “my bras don’t fit me anymore… i need to buy new ones.”
as if on cue, the silent notification bar that signaled new donations started popping up repeatedly, each time with a different amount of the website’s currency he’d get to convert to real money later. jimin chuckled again, he knew how to play this game too well. he had indeed grown out of most of his fancy silk and lace lingerie, but he also didn’t want to repeat the same ones he’d still fit into. that being said, he had decided on his fit for today as being a pair of baby blue silk shorts that barely covered his ass when he stood up, and a matching silk choker with a small emerald pendant.
“well, well, look at that! seems like i’ll have some new lingerie to show you guys soon.” His hands moved away from his body before he could get too excited, and moved towards the tray he had off camera.
with a little bit of maneuvering, he pulled the traw towards himself until it was in between his massive thighs and the camera, positioned just so that his body wouldn’t be too covered up and his belly would still be on display.
“as you can see” jimin praticaly purred, “i followed your requests and got a full american breakfast. there are pancakes,” he pointed at each and every item as he spoke, mouth watering just thinking about how he was finally going to eat “eggs, sausages, muffins, bagels and a berry smoothie.”
that was probably enough food to feed a family of four — the chat flooded with excited messages of how they couldn’t wait to see jimin eating it all. at first his viewers’ excitement would startle jimin a bit, but now? now he lived for it.
after all, he’d always get as excited as them.
“should i start with the pancakes? they’re still warm.” he asked, reading all the messages he could, all of which were encouraging him to start eating.
jimin reached for the pancakes. there were six of them in total, fluffy and golden brown with melted butter running down on all sides. jimin’s fork was quick to make work through the first three layers as he balanced the plate on top of his belly, and once the big bite was inside his lips he moaned unashamedly.
“fuck… so good.” he barely finished chewing before he pushed more inside his mouth, closing his eyes in bliss. “i could eat this everyday. imagine how much bigger i’d get.”
his viewers got off on that, as he came to learn very quickly after starting to stream himself eating. jimin’s primary goal certainly wasn’t to gain weight, but it did keep the cash coming and he didn’t mind the plushness one bit. just a small price to pay for all the food he shoved inside himself, and he did look hot with all the extra pounds. jimin continued to shove the pancakes inside his mouth, barely chewing before swallowing, moaning almost obscenely throughout the whole process. it didn’t take more than five minutes for him to polish the whole stack.
“kinda wish i had ordered more” he pouted, putting the plate away and lightly slapping his still very empty gut. the donations started popping up again, messages telling him to order more right at that instant, to order ten times more next week. “don’t worry everyone, i still have a lot more to eat!”
jimin reached for the bagels next — there were 9 of them in a box alongside 4 muffins of various flavours, and jimin had started alternating between them while answering some of his viewers questions.
“last time i went on a date? that was a couple months ago, actually” he answered between bites of a blueberry muffin. “made him take me to an all you can eat buffet, ate like a pig. had to unzip my pants for dessert and all...” jimin licked his fingers clean, making a little show out of it before reaching for the last bagel and all but eating half of it in one big bite before continuing in a lighthearted tone, cheeks full. “probably freaked him out, he never called again.”
the story was only partially true — taehyung had taken him to an all you can eat buffet for their first date, but he also had called again. they were dating, in fact, but had made an arrangement to keep it from jimin’s subscribers. as much as jimin didn’t mind showing his body and face online for thousands to see, his private life remained private, and he was a firm believer that nobody needed to know his real name, the city he lived in or his relationship status.
“i need something savory, now. those muffins were really sweet.” jimin sighed, taking a big sip from his berry smoothie. one of his chubby hands played with his belly, caressing around the belly button before lifting the fat mass and letting it fall, sighing at the way it jiggled back into place. the movement dislodged a gas bubble, and he could hear the gurgling noise coming up his throat and feel the pressure on his chest right before letting out a loud belch.
“oh, yeah… that felt good.” another burp made its way out right then, shorter and deeper than the first one. jimin bit his lip and smiled, playing coy. “excuse me!”
he reached for the eggs, three full plates with enough spicy sauce on top that it dripped down Jimin’s chin at his first bite. he didn’t clean it at first, too preoccupied with stuffing his face until he could barely chew with his mouth closed. jimin still had a few steps to take before he felt actually full, but his stomach definitely felt a little bit harder at the top, now. he ate the first two plates mostly in silence aside from the casual moans and loud slurps from the berry smoothie, lips feeling tingly and swollen from the spice.
“you guys remember last time i ate this spicy sauce, right?” jimin smiled, going for the third and last plate. “that day with the ten hamburguers. i downed almost the entire bottle with them, got so gassy afterwards. couldn’t stop burping.” the memory makes his comment session go crazy, talking about how hot it was, how he should do it again. jimin chuckles, happy his viewers don’t mind how much of a pig he can be sometimes.
he continues eating, barely stopping to breathe — there’s still two dishes to get done with, and his stomach is starting to protest about the eggs he just ate.
“hmm… tummy is talking, you guys hear that?” jimin all but shoves a finger inside his belly button, moving the digit around in a movement that could almost be considered obscene. he feels so good, exposed like this, stomach gurgling away the fullness.
the donations keep coming at a fast rate as jimin keeps eating, pace much slower than when he first started with the pancakes, lips greasy and adorned with crumbles. his hands find his belly a plethora of times, caressing the stretched out skin, pressing against the swelled up gut as he unashamedly lets out moans and sighs of pleasure. that’s how jimin, sooner rather than later, finds himself out of food to eat, only half of his smoothie left.
“so full…” he groans, leaning back to expose his full, rounded out fat belly. it gurgles audibly then, jumping out in an abrupt movement as jimin’s lips fall open and he belches again, a long and wavering deep noise that sounds both disgusting and relieving. only then he reaches off camera for a tissue box, cleaning his fingers and then his lips and double chin, laughing as he spots some muffin crumbles on his chest and wipes them away carelessly.
“that was so—” jimin is interrupted by a small burp, cheeks puffing up cutely. “so good. but i can’t help but feel like i could pack more in here.” he pats his belly kinda harshly, the slapping sound loud inside his room. “should i go for 10 pancakes next time? or maybe only have pancakes, a huge stack of them… ah, bet i could eat 20.”
the chat is, as always, extremely encouraging. the donations start coming at a surprising speed again, some messages attached about how the money is for his future grocery trip and for him to buy double of everything. jimin bathes on the attention for a little longer, answering some questions while trying to soothe his ful, oversized belly, chuckling every now and then and pointing out the gurgling noises it makes as it tries to process all the food he just ate.
he was not lying, though — it does feel like he could pack more if he tried. but that’s a thought for next time, and jimin stores it for next week’s stream as he bids goodbye and claims it’s time for him to get into his food coma and digest so he can come back even fatter.
“this has been manggae… until next time, guys!”

May I request some La Squadra childhood headcanons (upbringing/family/habits/demeanor) :)) Maybe Mista and Abbacchio too if it’s not too much trouble since we already saw a bit of baby Bruno and it made me so curious about the other two! I always imagined Abbacchio to be a bit of a teacher’s pet as a kid lol. Your writing brings me life tysm!!!!
warnings for abusive family, human experimentation, misogyny, illness, hospitals, death, etc!
Risotto’s family did not care much about him. He’s the middle child of five - they grew up in a rural part of Sicily, in a house that used to be a farmhouse but was merely a house by the time Risotto came along (aside from a flock of chickens constantly in the gardens). He had a traditional Italian family full of people - various aunts, uncles and cousins - but his cousin was his favourite, seeing in Risotto’s quiet nature something similar to his own. Risotto was uncomfortable with there being too many people around and found his home life cramped and uncomfortable and loud. At the local village school he was often hunted out for games of sport (his height and muscle growing in at an early age), but he shied away from making friends, not sure how to handle himself around people who shouted and laughed, envying his siblings for everything seeming so natural. He often stayed with the cousin, and it’s through them he discovered metal music and his now signature look. His parents didn’t have time for him, but his cousin always did, becoming a makeshift father figure where Risotto’s failed. He grew very attached, and as we know, his cousins death hit him hard.
Formaggio grew up with a single father; his mother simply disappeared in the middle of the night and he never heard from her again. He was always loud, brash and cocky - his father was much the same way. They moved around from place to place, his father taking odd jobs to sustain them and never really getting the hang of them. His father was fairly young and a perpetual teenager, and Formaggio was much the same way. Despite living in occasional poverty, he always had a smile and he and his father were close to one another. He did not really make friends - other children were aware of his unwashed clothes, the fact his lunch was not made as neatly as theirs, the fact that his address was a one-bedroom apartment on the bad side of town - so he turned to acting out and violence, gaining a reputation as a Badly Behaved Child. His father fell into Passione in the need to support his son, and like father like son, Formaggio followed in his footsteps at fourteen (finding a camaraderie and sense of responsibility he never had at school and subsequently just stopping going there).
Illuso got into Passione for the money and the power. He was an only child and he had a nice upbringing, honestly - he just found himself not special at anything, and he desperately wanted to be. He flitted from hobby to hobby and interest to interest; he was clever and he noticed things, and neither of his parents really knew how to deal with their sharp-tongued child. He was a bit of a bully at school, but not the kind that is ever found out - Illuso’s bullying was quieter than that, whispered words and rumours that never seemed to find their way back to him. He was well-acquainted with blackmail before he turned sixteen. He knew how to sniff out weaknesses in other people - he was always surrounded by people, but it was a lottery as to whether they liked Illuso or whether they just didn’t want to be on his wrong side. Always willing to volunteer for things, too confident for his own good - eventually, he stopped caring about being ‘special’ at something, and just worked on being the ‘best around him’.
Melone’s backstory can be found here. Both of his parents were academics and lecturers in genetic science, and he’s the eldest child by eight years. His family moved around rather a lot. He has two younger sets of twins as siblings; one set of boys, and one set of girls. Growing up, his parents considered him less interesting and a little slow - he turned to science and genetics as a way to get their attention and praise; despite the fact he showed a natural affinity for it, by this time, they were far more interested in experimenting on their younger children and Melone was ignored. His nature is curious and insistent - he learnt to insist or to be ignored. He had to look after his younger siblings a lot growing up; they were home-schooled where he was not, and the strange separation of them and him and all of the children at school (Melone not quite fitting into either group) meant that he always seemed just a little off.
Prosciutto is a mafia man through and through. His family are entrenched in old bloodlines and uninvestigated deaths - unfortunately, though, they are a family that had somewhat fallen from grace by Prosciutto’s birth. The definition of faded glamour and keeping up appearances; rooms in a big, drafty old house that have an old bed and a falling apart dressing table. His father always talked to him about how it was his and his brothers’ job to keep the bloodline going - a traditional chauvinist of a man. His mother was very quiet and pretty; she encouraged him to small interests like old music and fashion, but was always silent around her husband. He grew up knowing his life was expendable. Youngest son of two; his elder brother died within months of finally being given his assignment within Passione and honestly, Prosciutto knows his father would rather he have died. A quiet little boy who did not make friends (he had a tutor) and had too much of the weight of the world on his shoulders in the knowledge of how many of his mother’s jewels were pasteboard, where the guns were kept, and just how many people he saw regularly were murderers. At his assignment at sixteen, Prosciutto had to learn exactly how to blend in, because many of the mafiosos he was suddenly surrounded by did not appreciate what they saw as his superiority.
Pesci was an only child of a single mother; his father passed away when he was young. He was rather sickly growing up, and it made his mother indulgent - despite growing up fairly middle class, he never wanted for anything, and they lived well beyond their means. His mother fussed over him, always afraid that he was going to have a relapse into his childhood illness - very much a child wrapped in cotton wool. It gave him his own complex about taking risks; he didn’t want to get hurt. He didn’t want to be rejected by other children. He was slow at his schoolwork but devoted to his mother, and other children saw him as a prime target to bully. He was kicked around a lot at school and it eventually made him too easy to subdue when he suddenly filled out and shot up and became a threat; found himself, too often, a henchman to more articulate, meaner children. Grateful to be accepted, he went along with the flow, despite feeling in the very core of his gut that he was disgusted by them. He ended up in Passione because his mother needed medical treatment and in trying to sort it out realised just how much debt they were in.
Ghiaccio just had a normal run-of-the-mill described as ‘average’ by everyone upbringing - both of his parents, an only child, a mother with a professional job, middle-class. His father was partially deaf - in my experience, people with deaf parents either speak very loudly or very quietly, and Ghiaccio has gone for the former. He learnt LIS at a very early age, and it’s part of the reason he can be so anal about pronunciation and language as a whole - he’s utterly fascinated by it, and that fascination started in early childhood. His parents were also indulgent of him, but having a younger brother meant that he didn’t get the full brunt of that indulgence - his brother was a little more of a ‘rough and tumble’ boy. He liked football and weights, and when he took up a sport Ghiaccio’s parents decided Ghiaccio should learn to do something too and asked him what he thought - they were surprised when he said ice skating, but figured he would go into ice hockey or something. He didn’t. For a while, he was fairly well-known in the competitive figure skating under eighteens circuit. It gave him two things; one, a competitive need to win and be good at things (and a propensity to tantrum when he lost) and two, a taste for flashy, expensive things (have you seen this man’s car). His parents eventually didn’t know how to deal with his arrogance, and he fell into Passione based on a ‘sponsor’ he ended up embroiled with at nineteen when his parents didn’t want to fund his ‘hobby’ anymore (they kept pouring resources into his younger brother, of course - Ghiaccio always felt a bit like they didn’t take him seriously). He left ice skating competitively behind, but he couldn’t leave behind the nice things or the anger issues he accrued.
I’ve written about Sorbet and Gelato’s childhood/backstory here! But a brief, shorter version:
Gelato had a loving family and a privileged upbringing. Always enough money, always enough to eat - an only child, who perhaps was a little rowdy at school but whomst his parents were very proud of. Both of them were traditional types; thinks a man should be strong, should be the real driving force of all relationships - they were extremely proud of him going into the army. Cleverer than people tend to give him credit for, sharp-eyed, a constant humming need to be doing something with his hands.
Sorbet was orphaned at a young age in a house fire and taken in by a church orphanage. He’s quiet but equally clever; his cleverness tends to be a little less in your face. He was a comforting presence to other people and took care of the younger boys (even now, he feels a sense of duty to some of La Squadra) - being low-voiced, soothing and commanding. He spent a lot of time reading. The church orphanage was poor; Sorbet has learnt to appreciate luxury where Gelato takes it for granted and it’s part of the reason he’s so concerned with finances even in his forties.
Abbacchio grew up in a houseful of women. His father left when he was still young; he was . . . not a nice man, and Abbacchio has vague memories of his mother carefully applying concealer over black eyes. It’s part of the reason Abbacchio became a police officer - knowing that he was still out there, not paying for what he’d done . . . Abbacchio wanted to ensure other people did not go through it. He had a little sister (by six years) who adored him, and his grandmother (who had once been an opera singer and still had a touch of that old-time glamour). He was fairly well off; at least, after he and his mother went to live with her mother again. His grandmother was EXTREMELY indulgent of her serious pretty-eyed grandson (his affinity for opera comes from her) who wanted so hard to be a Good Man. He was made fun of as a child for being a teacher’s pet and a nerd, you’re right - he adopted being a goth and dressing like that fairly early in his life. Nobody was going to threaten to punch him in leather and black lipstick, he thought - and nobody, too, needed to know that his CD player was blasting Monteverdi and not heavy metal.
Mista was the only child of an unreliable mother and a father who left when he was four (he kept very vaguely in touch; Mista has three little sisters who he sees occasionally but keeps quiet about his employ to. After the events of VA, he’s established a fund for each of them, but he wasn’t really permitted to see them much growing up). Even after his parents leaving and his neighbour’s loss of an eye (and the subsequent setting in of his fear of the number four), he was an easy-going child who made friends easily and smiled at all and sundry; he was never particularly book-clever, but he was good-natured and had many friends. His mother’s lack of reliability meant that he became very fond of simple things other people took for granted - when she died, he was sad, but his life did not change much. He’d already learnt to fend for himself when it came to food and the like; often coming home to an empty house and simply making do. (The lack of food in the house is part of the reason he gained such an affinity for things he saw as luxuries like wines and cheeses). He learnt to use his dark eyes and charming smile and warm nature to win sleepovers with schoolfriends and evening meals with their parents. Always a little bit behind his peers in having cool gadgets or interesting stories, Mista was content just to have a simple life and good health.
