L'aventure de Canmom à Annecy - Vendredi 2: The Tunnel to Summer, the Exit of Goodbyes

It's almost a week since the day now but here's more Annecy writeups! I will be republishing this whole series in a very fancy filterable way on canmom.art soon, so look out for that!

Friday's second act was the new anime film The Tunnel to Summer, The Exit of Goodbyes (夏へのトンネル、さよならの出口 Natsu he Tonneru, Sayonara no Deguchi), a title which conveniently only uses kanji from the first ~10 levels of Wanikani so it's nice and easy to read. That said, this showing had both English and French subtitles, so I didn't need to lean on my Japanese knowledge this time. Here's a trailer...

This film seems to have been out in Japan for long enough that it's already available on nyaa (GJM are working on a sub), but this was actually my first time hearing about it. It was originally a light novel by Mei Hachimoku, then a manga, and now an anime film by Tomohisa Taguchi.

Taguchi has a pretty good track record as a director, although mostly stuff I've not seen. In fact the only of his works I've seen before is the original series Akudama Drive (2020), which is a very stylish scifi heist anime. He also directed the recent Bleach film, and the 2017 Kino's Journey TV anime, as well as a number of adaptations of the Persona games.

As seems to be customary for screenings at the Bonlieu Grand Salle, he and one of the producers (I regret that I didn't make a note of which of the three) came on stage before the film to comment a little. [That guy on the left - I'm not sure his name but he seems to be one of the main people running Annecy, since he introduced most of the films and carried out interviews at most of the Grand Salle screenings I went to.]

Taguchi remarked that most of his previous work has been action, so this more grounded romance film was a big change of pace. He spoke about wanting to capture the loneliness of the two main characters. The animation was carried out at Studio CLAP, a young studio whose previous work is Pompo the Cinephile, which we watched on Animation Night 123.

This film actually ended up winning the 'Paul Grimault Award', one of the three awards bestowed to feature films, which is named after a French animator who I presently mostly know from the bus stop by Cinema Pathé; at some point I gotta dig in more lmao.

So, with all that introduction... what sort of film was it? I went in expecting a solidly made summer movie in the Makoto Shinkai idiom... and that is indeed precisely what I got.

The story concerns two highschoolers, Kaoru (our main viewpoint character) and Anzu. Kaoru is a boy whose sister died when he was young, leading to his parents breaking up and his father falling into alcoholism. Since she was attempting to retrieve a beetle for him, he blames himself for the death - a sentiment shared by his father. Anzu meanwhile is a new transfer student who arrives at the school and immediately makes waves by acting standoffish towards the other students. She has aspirations to become a mangaka, following in the footsteps of her grandfather, but this has estranged her from the rest of her family who disapproved of his lack of success. So she severely doubts her own talent.

The pair meet on a rainy day waiting for a train that is delayed by hitting a deer, at which Kaoru lends Anzu his umbrella. This train stop becomes a recurring motif throughout the film, symbolising the evolution of their relationship. The other major element is a local legend of the 'Urashima Tunnel', which can grant wishes, at the price that time is drastically slowed down inside the tunnel, so that seconds inside the tunnel pass as hours outside. Kaoru discovers the tunnel is in fact real, and might give him a way to save his sister; Anzu follows him and the pair start researching the properties of the tunnel (e.g. its effect on phone communications), and draw up a plan to enter it and get what they want, even if it sends them thousands of years into the future.

Naturally they grow closer together and start to form a romantic relationship. Kaoru learns about Anzu's manga, and comes to the conclusion that she doesn't lack talent at all - and he also knows (somehow) that the tunnel is not capable of bestowing talent, only restoring things that were lost. So in the end (spoilers!) Kaoru enters the tunnel in secret without Anzu knowing. Eight years pass on the outside during which Anzu becomes a successful mangaka, still eaten by her highschool relationship; inside over a matter of minutes Kaoru finds his sister, and spends a little time with her, before realising that actually what he really needs is to be with Anzu, so he texts her and starts running back. They reunite near the entrance of the tunnel, smooch, and live happily ever after (even though Kaoru is still a high schooler and there's an eight year age gap lmao, this just straight up isn't even mentioned as a potential issue).

Generally I enjoyed the buildup a lot more than the final act. That this kind of movie centres on a heterosexual relationship is inevitable, but Anzu and Kaoru's hesitant relationship is genuine and sweet - the scene where Kaoru is reading Anzu's manga as she anxiously waits for his opinion is especially well observed. The pair's efforts, led by Anzu, to analyse the properties of the tunnel through experimentation is fun, since that's precisely what I would do if confronted with a magical tunnel of time dilation. That said, the central fantastical conceit, the time dilation tunnel, doesn't feel like an especially interesting metaphor.

Compared to the films of Makoto Shinkai, which visually and narratively it hews very close to (complete with the coloured highlights), the notable divergence is that the couple don't end up separated and do get their happy ending. Kaoru's decision to break their compact and leave Anzu alone outside the tunnel for eight years ultimately... just doesn't matter too much. He realises he needs to move on, says goodbye to his sister, and reunites with Anzu. I think it might be more interesting if Anzu actually ended up moving on and starting a different relationship and Kaoru had to face up to the fact that he has thrown away his one connection, but then I'm a miserable bitch who loves suffering lmao. Alternatively, I think it would be really cool if they actually did send themselves thousands of years into the future, although it would put this film into a very different genre.

In any case, the ending to this film ultimately left me a little cold. Yay, breeding pair got together.

Even so, it was absolutely an entertaining film; the environments are suitably beautiful, the animation is solid. Whether you'd enjoy it will probably depend how much you enjoy the "summer movie magical romance" subgenre. If you like Makoto Shinkai's movies, you'll probably like this one. If you hate Makoto Shinkai's movies, I expect you'd feel much the same about this one.

Speaking of Makoto Shinkai, I was a little surprised not to see Suzume in competition. But in general it seems pretty random which anime studios decide to submit their work to Annecy. Some studios like Science Saru have a pretty close relationship with the festival, others seem to ignore it entirely. (Perhaps it is a case of like, for smaller studios it's a valuable chance for promotion, but Makoto Shinkai is basically guaranteed a massive worldwide audience so he doesn't need to bother to come out to France?)

THE SHIPS: i have to start with this, sorry. neither of the two main ships compelled me. gzy/yws was alright, i could see the appeal, and i mean i do like them enough. they're good for each other, i'm glad they're happy. as for gsj/sgq i will just say concisely: no. jf/gzs were very cute and i enjoyed them, yun que/yue-gongzi as well!

THE DYNAMICS: now here is where yzy NAILED IT!! i may not have liked gsj/sgq as a ship, but as a DYNAMIC? amazing. perfect. all the two of them are is a game of weiqi and a guilt-ridden tragedy. lovely stuff. juezhi? absolute gold. the family dynamics? so complex and tasty. the hanyas, dianzhu, zhuo mei in relation to yws and sgq? i could go on forever. and any dynamic with sgq makes me insane.

THE PLOT: started off strong and ended........ well. see above (my estimated to be 60k fix-it fic). some parts definitely could have been cut or made more concise. there are... a lot of holes to patch. some lore really should have been used better too.

THE DIALOGUE: good at some parts and too direct at others. a lot of telling and not enough showing.

OVERALL THOUGHTS: this is definitely an interesting drama to rewatch because for all the scenes you sped through before, you learn several pieces of information you missed 😂 i rated this drama 8/10, which was carried by its production, cast and characters. my biggest issues were the plot holes and main ships, but otherwise, it's a worthwhile watch. i don't regret watching it for sure- i can't imagine how empty my brain would be without shangguan qian (and yun weishan) haunting it daily 😂

yang chaowen is really a sensitive kid... man he brings out renyu's song's feels and then brings up ylq to relate to the lyrics bc he knows his friend isnt getting as much appreciation as himself. (this makes even more sense after ylq said he had been crying before ycw went onstage and ycw was comforting him... and then after ycw came off the stage, it was time for ylq to comfort him from crying TT) Their friendship is really something. But then ycw saying he just gets ripped for getting screentime for crying all the time ouch but i dont get the feeling that hes doing it for attention but maybe im becoming partly biased towards chaowen :)

Lol the fact that they focus so much on xzx and how hes favored by gjm but feels like it's unfair to be treated uncomfortably by other trainees as a result... all i can say is, what do u expect, of course the other kids will be salty, their lives are on the line and theyre getting nothing close to the attention you are, so unfortunately u cant win everything :(

Jackson is literally trying to say something meaningful and mentor-like to su er and gjm literally interrupts with his own opinion.... jackson is like unable to finish his thought. and then when Cheng xiao is actually trying to give ma haowen advice, gjm just goes WELL I DISAGREE, THIS IS RENYU'S FAULT and everyone's like wtffffff???? Aw cto friendship and xue en crying :’) actually one thing ive noticed i feel like yzx seems like a genuinely kind and cheerful friend, maybe people are bashing him bc he pushed off some leaderly responsibilities to lin mo in the last round but maybe hes just not someone to take on a strict leader role (looks at aj from afo...) and realized that since lin mo has such experience and is really good at it, it makes sense to respect his experience and skill and let him take on that role. of course its unfortunate that means lin mo worked extra for less recognition, but i think it seems like yzx really respected and admired him so im hopeful what happened wasnt due to mean intentions

watching chen junhao feeling lost oh man :/ maybe he hadnt fully prepared himself for the idol life when first coming on this show. its unfortunate reality that in this kind of idol survival show, the focus is more on stage presence and face and performance, rather than the music itself. Hopefully he really feels that hes found a path forward through this performance. This is a really real way to present him but I'm sad theres not as much focus on li chenxu when this is hissss song

Man both the self composed songs are really good!! Mann them making this song a dance song is really hard to watch for li chenxu bc its makes it hard for him to shine at his own song which is sad :( also lzx's rap is questionable lol but cjh's vocal part in the middle part is so emotional, I hope he felt like he was able to express himself fully there

ok so maybe im liking more new kids than i expected, but i think thats a good thing that the show is making them likable and some kids are able to stand out! honestly i realized I kinda can see why they eliminated so many to begin with. It's sad but also kinda nice tbh (ouch, i know) bc if they really got rid of the ones who have less skill, it makes it easier for the others who dont have to teach from zero (cough lin mo) And then those with skill get to have at least 3(?) stages, unlike qcyn where jin fan got eliminated after only doing 1 silly stage lol The skill level of the stages is also raised, like there's multiple groups of almost all people who are well qualified. im sure the kids are happy that they get to do more stages, im sure that means a lot to them.

At least on snzm they attempt to give most trainees a positive light and give screentime to more than just the top 10 trainees. and they allow someee time for vocals, dancers and rappers to get appreciation (even tho dancers are still dominating lol)

but yea honestly I disliked the judging on pdc2019 too tho so at least the judges here can be supportive... at times. it is SUPER biased and gjm is very vocal despite his lack of knowledge tho lol

it's so bad bc I feel like my standards for shows are so low at this point. my standards get lowered with every show I watch. It's like I guess the snzm songs are okay bc I hated the ones on afo more so at least the stages aren't thattt bad lol At least the rules/general setup aren't as terrible as they were on afo..... at least the camera time isnt as biased as it was on qcyn.... sigh the show isnt doing great, and itd be best if the show would help the tygers get more popular, but I guess its prob better than just doing nothing at star master lol.

qcyn was just painful to watch from "spirit of the knight" onward bc momo literally was buried, mistreated, disrespected and taken advantage of. at least on snzm he gets some screentime and positive recognition.....

tbh i like snzm, maybe thats an unpopular opinion, but at least there have been some really great stages, where the kids really get to shine. at least i can confidently say that bc of snzm, i have met some new kids who i will be sure to follow for new music moving forward :)

Saving the last episode of 演员请就位 . I didn't watch the first season so I can't comment but out of Zhao Wei/Er Dong Sheng/Chen Kai Ge/Guo Jingming, I really like 尔导 the most. I came to watch for 流量s after watching 画皮 haha, but started stanning 尔冬升 instead 😂.

Zhao Wei - I think her only directorial work is So Young? Ok solid but there's no other works to judge her on. Solid actress, strong directorial debut. She's been picking handsome men for her team but her team truly has the best 团魂. Out of the directors, I think shes the most lenient and more buddy buddy with her actors. Maybe she'll change with more experience lol. You can tell she's being polite the entire show and doesn't give a crap about GJM hahaha, shes always shading him, side eyeing him and making neutral comments so she doesn't offend any one. She's very 新生代esque and I like how she decided to keep 辣目!!

Guo Jingming - I literally have not even watched 小时代 and both 爵迹's are not the best calibre of movies??? Can't believe he gave an S card to 何昶希 like 3 times wtf. He likes them pretty boys. "You don't have to like it but please allow it it exist." Wtf lol. "The reason I give an S card is because I want him to act for me." *2 seconds later* "I didn't mean I want him right now, I only said it because thats my standard." Smh. He gives comments as if he needs to prove something. "I only film movies-" SON WHO DO YOU THINK YOU'RE TALKING TO?? "I don't like scenes with alot of dialogue" i'm-

Chen Kaige - his most famous work is 霸王别姬?? Rumors say his dad sctually filmed it and he just stuck his name on it. Other than this, He really doesn't have any works that stand out. Also pretty sure he took the offer to be on the show because it was part of the deal that led 陈飞宇 to be the male lead in one of his shows. He says some pretty cool things to his actors , advice that actually make sense and will help them but his script writing his terrible?? Also half the time, he really is sitting there making no comments and actually "watching the show go on." 老狐狸一个 lol. Sad Myolie Wu chose to be on his team. Because of her age, she got stuck chasing a 小鲜肉 for her last two works with Kaige daoyan smh what a waste. Also didn't like the way he treated 张海宇 by making him put on a fake nose for NO REASON and not even looking at him in the final round and straight up giving Chen youwei 50 points. Speaking of Chen youwei - "我们顶峰相见" - how much money did whatever company UNINE is from pay 腾讯??? Lmao. He's very contrite and polite to his actor but I really don't understand what he is trying to convey through his scripts lol.

尔冬升 - knew him because of his two brothers. He's been around for awhile. I've watched 门徒 and 新宿事件 , both of which he was the director but none of his acting work. About to go down his filmography haha. Out of all 4 directors, he's the newbie, he's also primarily in HK so he's literally not in town. This is his first variety show so for a HK director to be in the mainland, its a big deal because he probably has no people and no connections. Personal life aside, I found him incredibly...kind and naive on this show. For the first half of the show, he was genuinely critiquing and giving comments on acting. He probably came on the show for $$$, and also because he thought it was a show to look at young talents and help 磨练 them. After 李诚儒老师 left, you can tell the atmosphere changed haha. At that point he probably realized the whole show is dumb and only the young popular 流量s will get the votes which is true. While all the other directors picked the handsome young men and most promising girls, he was the only director who picked the older actresses (CKG with Myolie doesn't count) like Ni Hongjie and Ma Su because they actually have acting talent. I don't even believe for a minute that actresses like them were in the B group. He was the only one who was there for the 演员. Everyone was picking 明星s. He knew the trophy wasn't important, what was important was the experience, the knowledge and the future opportunities. People like Huang Yi, WZR , Ma Su and NHJ are experienced veterans; they're not gonna go head to head with these rookies for a meaningless trophy. The other point I mentioned was kind. He was asking Li zhi nan and Cao Jun about how their lives were, if everything was okay and even extending an invite to connect through Wechat and job opportunities. And I've found his works on 演员请就位, he gives his actors the most even screen time as possible and even in the final round, he let his actors divy up the points. Also to 任敏 - realizing her voice might limit her acting work in the future and is willing to help her find teachers in the future. Ugh 真暖. And one scene early on. After CYW and WCR's version of 三生三世, he was so confused because fans didn't want their idol to hug. Obviously being an older man in his 60s he was like "Ummm if you want to be a serious actor, you need to differentiate between that an idol. Don't be controlled by your fans". Respect. Also when he gets agitated, he lapses back into Cantonese haha.

And 尔导 making GJM cry HAHA.

The whole time, GJM has been making stank faces and annoying comments. "You can not like something but please allow it to exist" and then he goes off saying "I don't like this work, I don't like this production at all." Once you say something like that obviously you mean the directors and production team is at fault, obviously 尔导 was gonna get upset. So fire 🔥 when 尔导 was like "So you're blaming the directors and production then? I don't need you to criticize my actors , I'll do it myself."

The whole situation was going to end when GJM was trying to make himself seem like he was from a more "professional director standpoint " and said "well i film more movies and I didn't learn from this 体系." Like bruh at his age, 尔导 was already winning awards. Gjm really doesn't take a hint omg.

I think he almost shat his pants when 尔导 fired back with "那你学的是什么体系?" Lmao GJM really thought he picked someone easy to bully. And then directly exposing the latter by saying "before filming, you said to go easy so why did you not go easy?" I think being his first variety show, Er Dao was truly a little naive. He really took GJM's words to heart when the dude was just having friendly banter.

You can tell no one takes GJM seriously.

Indefinite strike across Darjeeling, PWD office torched

The Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) are on an indefinite strike from today demanding a separate state of 'Gorkhaland'.

Additional Director General of Police Siddhinath Gupta had said earlier that 3 people have been arrested but added that the situation was under control.

Meanwhile, GJM general secretary Roshan Giri said that an all-party meeting has been called on June 13 to discuss the matter.

"Offices of Gorkhaland Territorial Administration, Bengal government and Central Government will be closed from Monday. Court will be open. Banks will be open on Monday and Thursday. School and colleges have been exempted from bandh. We appealed to put all sign boards in Darjeeling, Kerseong, Kalimpong, Mirik and other places in Nepali and English," Giri told ANI.

"We have also written to home minister Rajnath Singh apprising him as to how West Bengal suppresses us," he added.

On Saturday, Gurung asked West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee not to do or promote 'divisive' politics in the state.

"I request Mamata Banerjee that she is a chief minister and she must not do divisive politics. Her dictatorial politics will find a place in the Guinness book soon," Gurung told ANI.

He assured that the GJM will talk to the Centre as the state government is trying to suppress Gorkhaland for her own political interest.

"We will talk to the Centre and will send a letter to prime minister and home minister as well regarding all the atrocities. The state government is doing to suppress Gorkhaland for her own political interest," he said.

On Friday, a PIL was filed in the Calcutta High Court against the bandh called by GJM in Darjeeling, declaring it to be 'unconstitutional and illegal'.

The matter will be brought up for hearing this week.

Chief minister Banerjee has branded the GJM protest as 'abhorrent' and appealed to the people of the region to maintain peace.

The GJM supporters are also protesting against the alleged imposition of Bengali in the schools of the hills.

The agitation arose from an announcement made by Mamata Banerjee earlier that Bengali would be taught compulsorily up to Class 10 in the state schools.

After the GJM cadres clashed with the police following their protests against Mamata's visit to Darjeeling and her decision to make Bengali compulsory in syllabus of schools across the state, the Army was called in to control the situation.

According to reports, the protest led by the GJM turned violent after protesters resorted to vandalism as they torched police vehicles and attacked policemen.

again another one of my favorites and the grassley duel is probably my favorite fight of the series tbh

worth noting that miorine doesnt seem bothered that shaddiq comes to check up on her. gotta wonder how often he'd swing by, though i think it's safe to say absolutely not often enough that he would show he actually gives a shit

lol it honestly kills me that under difference circumstances (aka if shaddiq didnt have his head so far up his ass), they really could have been good friends. instead his decision to stay relatively distant and put up his cunning business front results in miorine (rightly) not trusting him at all.

made it to image limit so no more pics but one thing that's respectable about shaddiq is him realizing at the end of this episode that there really is something special between miorine and suletta even if perhaps at this point the two of them haven't outright acknowledged it. we see him acknowledge in ep 7 that miorine is becoming a better version of herself from suletta's influence on her, but him bringing up dueling for her hand in marriage, to me at least, is him hanging up his towel when it comes to miorine because he realized suletta really won her heart over - he literally says "maybe you'd have let me in [to the greenhouse]"

haha that's a hell of a question

as far as TV anime goes, I think it still has to be Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken! (映像研には手を出すな！Eizōken ni wa Te o Dasu na!), a series about three schoolgirls who become a mini anime studio: an imaginative autistic girl who is constantly transforming her surroundings into drawings of elaborate, intricate science fiction worlds; the daughter of two actors who is a full on sakubuta who aspires to be a great character animator; and their tall ruthless but secretly very caring friend who assumes the producer role and battles the student council to secure their chance to continue making anime. they live in this chaotic unusual town that's full of odd architecture and abandoned buildings which become the fuel for creating really distinctive animation.

and, well, it's fucking great :D I don't think anything else goes quite so far to capture the joy of this medium; it's definitely a passion project for a lot of very young animators at Science Saru (as sakugablog discusses in a whole series of posts lol) and that really shines through.

so its characters are distinctive and charming, the setting is hinted to be this really interesting near-future, and the creators evidently have a lot of literacy with the most fun anime of the 80s and 90s and what makes them compelling... and then there's just really strong direction and animation throughout. by Masaaki Yuasa's standards it's less experimental than his earlier work, but it does achieve a lot more thematic and narrative cohesion as a result, and it's got a lot of really beautiful joyful watercolour sequences as the girls imagine the worlds they want to animate.

so there's a reason my current project of becoming an animator began not long after starting this show! (and I like anime about making anime a lot now... Shirobako is a much more realistic portrayal of what it's like to work in the anime industry, and also very good, but it doesn't quite spark that same joy as Eizouken.)

so yeah, Eizouken! if you wanna watch it, I highly recommend the extremely high-effort fansub by GJM.

what about film? well i’ve watched so many films in the last year and a bit of running animation night, how the hell do i even pick? but one I still love, which we haven’t covered (because I have had a rule to not do the most well known Disney and Ghibli films lol) is Princess Mononoke (もののけ姫 Mononoke-Hime). nowadays I can place it in context a lot more: it’s a fantasy jidaigeki movie, focused on ecological and colonial conflict, but what makes it stand out (apart from, of course, incredible direction and animation and an amazingly powerful score but that’s kind of a given for Ghibli :p) is the level of nuance it uses to treat its conflict.

Miyazaki has had an interesting arc; in his youth he was a full on Marxist and involved in the organising at Toei, but with the fall of the USSR and growing up some more, he had something of a crisis in the 90s, which he works through in the pages of the Nausicaa manga (a much more complex and bleak work than the film adaptation) and Princess Mononoke. So I think his best works are from this period; the animation got even more elaborate in his later movies, but he seems to have given up on some level, unable to resolve the problems he raised.

Anyway, what makes Princess Mononoke for me is Lady Eboshi. She’s at once the leader of a colonial extractivist project, and a figure of enormous and understandable devotion and loyalty for the outcasts of feudal Japan who she took under her wing. She’s actively resisting the samurai and carving out a space for the lepers and former sex workers to live on their own terms. Of course, you could read this in a very negative light: a cunning boss who picked some easily exploitable populations to staff her mining project, much like sex worker ‘rescue’ organisations in the real world. But the movie presents life in Irontown as generally very positive: Ashitaka’s visit to the women working the forge is an especially interesting moment. The only problem is that it’s predicated on the dispossession and slaughter of the existing inhabitants of the region (the wolves, apes and boars), and it’s totally ecologically unsustainable (there won’t be iron forever).

By comparison, a lot of ecological fiction from this period tends to have a very oversimplified black and white view of it: evil men are destroying the environment, our heroes ally with the forest creatures or whatever and stop them. Princess Mononoke at least manages to show why people are motivated to live in this way: by forging guns from this bloody iron, the people of Irontown are able to secure a much better lot than they could under the samurai. And Ashitaka, who is tasked with ‘seeing with eyes unclouded by hate’, is able to recognise this; ‘who’s side are you on’ asks one of the villagers later on as Ashitaka runs between all sides trying unsuccessfully to intervene to end the conflict with his supernatural strength.

I think the way the film portrays violence is really strong: it’s always so abrupt and its consequences so graphic. I do certainly enjoy a sustained well-choreographed fight, but this more ‘realistic’ portrayal (obviously there’s nothing realistic about a magic arm that lets you takes someone’s arms off with one arrow, but in terms of how quick and nasty it is) works really well for the narrative it’s telling.

Unfortunately the film cannot resolve the puzzle it sets. Thanks to Ashitaka and San’s intervention to return the head of the Deer God, the people of Irontown are saved from the supernatural catastrophe, and the tone of the ending suggests they’ve learned a lesson from it; however, we don’t get to see what that resolution is, beyond Ashitaka moving into Irontown and the forest spirits deciding on some level to make peace with them. The samurai aren’t going to stop coveting that land; the forest population have been decimated and in any case can’t stand up to firearms as we’ve seen, so the pressure to extract iron remains. Miyazaki does a great job of apprehending what’s at stake with these kinds of ecological questions, but finds himself unable to answer it - but I think that very difficulty is what makes the film so compelling for me.

If it has another flaw, it is perhaps - and I don’t really know where this could fit in an already long movie - doesn’t really show us what the forest spirits live like when they’re not at war. It does a convincing job of showing the material forces that produce Irontown, and the animals’ anger at having their forest attacked; but it would have been interesting to put a similar effort into showing the colonised population as having an equally complex society with its own pressures and driving forces. But that’s like... that’s asking too much lol. And the spirits are spirits, not humans, which adds an extra level of interpretation.

So Princess Mononoke would have been my answer before I began Animation Night, for sure. Is it still? It’s definitely up there. If I wanted to name other movies that affected me on a similar level... can we count Birdboy: The Forgotten Children since Studio 4C did some work on it? :p ...yeah I didn’t think so. But we can definitely count Tekkonkinkreet, which I wrote about at some length on Animation Night 52. I would also name Made in Abyss: Dawn of the Deep Soul as leaving a huge impact - an undeniably extremely compelling and imaginative horror movie and broader series, which I have complicated feelings about enjoying which I might try and explicate another time.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Rebellion is another one that stands out in my mind; the story is immensely compelling but mostly I love it because it has just about the most beautiful fight/dance choreography in this entire medium imo, taking full advantage of the abstract Inu Curry-designed setting and Kalafina’s music. and Redline is one you absolutely must watch if you haven’t, Takeshi Koike’s seven year labour of love at Madhouse: Koike’s style is so distinctive and while his later Lupin III films tend to miss the mark on the narrative, Redline’s story is really just a vehicle for some of the most incredible animated sequences and inventive exaggerated designs you could put to screen so it all works.

I also have a great deal of love for short film compilations: Robot Carnival, Neo Tokyo, Memories, Short Peace, the Japan Animator Expo and various early 4C projects like Genius Party, Ani*Kuri 15, and Digital Juice. The smaller scope of projects like this gives a lot more room for stylistic experiments and individual lavish sequences.

I could keep going... Yuasa again with Night Is Short Walk On Girl which is just joyful and unexpected at every turn, I’m not even sure which Satoshi Kon to pick but maybe Tokyo Godfathers or Millenium Actress... the Eva rebuilds really came together in movie 4 and they’re a hell of a statement... etc. etc.

So I guess you asked for one favourite and I gave you a whole list but how do you even compare these things? They’re all attempting such different projects! It seems pointless to say one is ‘better’; I wouldn’t want to go without seeing any of them! I love this medium because the range of possibilities for expression is just so wide, each studio burrowing into new unseen corners of visual semiotic space or whatever... ok that sounds wanky but you know. It’s true!!

But yeah. I guess there’s a curriculum for you, have at ;p

interesting that they focused on junhao for everybody. can understand he probably has the most different and struggle experience so probably more interesting for dramas sake lol im surprised they dont spend more time on shengen, considering his popularity.

HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAA JUNHAO FREAKING OUT over the fact that they only learned the dance for 40 mins. LOL thats the level of tyger + kou cong + shengen, i can imagine the struggle of the yang guang nan hai group in comparison AHAHA i just imagine him running down the hall freaking out like HOW DID THEY LEARN THE DANCE IN JUST ONE CLASS WHAT ARE THESE PEOPLE

lollll “theyre all dachang boys” “theyre all zhang yixing’s students” HAHAHAH you know even though he is slightly struggling compared to the rest, he aint bad and theyre all taking it light hearted with laughter so seems like a good learning environment! and he’s confident he’ll get it LOL thats good! i think thats what makes him so amusing

wow the lyrics are so fitting for lin mo to scream LOL but also ay his vocals?! aw im glad they put in a little rap for shengen and akey! honestly was kinda hoping for more bc they havent had a proper stage together before and i feel like itd be awesome but also junhao and zhan yu vocalization at the end was on point!!

lol all the kids being like zhang pd’s words are so detailed and professional... sigh theyve been missing out until now

im glad they really pointed out how each member of this team did well! they really all did a great job with each of their parts, and they each got a little part to shine, and when put together, it was a complete performance. im proud of them and happy for them!

aw.... i feel like we’ve been waiting so long to hear lin mo get complimented.... i feel like it’s been since qcyn namanana that we’ve been waiting for him to redeem himself and climb back up to the peak. ugh its been nearly a year and a half. im just so terrified of whats gonna happen next bc im way too skeptical at this point to expect this high to continue, esp with what happened after namanana last time......... but for now, im happy. relieved hes finally getting the recognition he deserves and im happy that hes happy. lol i was also half scared we were gonna get spirit of the knight-ed again with his pink hair (nightmare flashbacks to lin mo and changxi’s deletion from that perf) i dont think ill ever get over that :( i feel like as a lin mo stan, ive been trained to not keep my hopes up and to prepare for the worst bc hes the type of person who just always gets the short end of the stick, it feels like.

aw the part when they go back to the waiting room and jin fan is waiting for them with an encouraging smile and the whole exchange of "帥的真的帥的" "哇~可以吧" "我沒想到" "那必須的" our leader did them proud :’)

ugh the part where luo jie calls them and tells them he can’t come back........ heart breaking. i can see why lin ran and xikan would be really affected. lin ran has been luo jie’s go-to since he left and knowing how their usual friendship involves making fun of one another and jokingly complaining about each other, it hits hard when lin ran says he cried his eyes out. it hurts that they didnt get to share the stage again before he left. xikan may not have shared the stage with luo jie during ip, but hes known him since then and has been with him through both rounds here. it interesting bc i feel like the namanana perf was very light hearted on qcyn but i cant see that happening here, esp with their outfits?

aw shiwei and chaowen taking charge to raise their spirits :’)

lin ran’s voice fits so well with this song wow! i really like his lines! also lol i didnt know xikan would have abs but okay and tbh im always hesitant about dances with props bc it always is so easy to look messy..... like every slight difference in angle in the way you hold your arms is immediately magnified

and like sxl’s fan is obviously broken and having performed fan dances myself i know that that’s like the most annoying thing to happen on stage, and can be really difficult to deal with, even tho it happens ALL THE TIME with those types of fans ugh :(

i mean its super kind of them to leave luo jie’s space empty for him, but its kinda weird to have parts of the audio missing sadly :( and also chaowen’s voice did something weird in the middle there, like its sounds weirdly weak

xikan’s facial expressions are perfecttt, good for him! wish they gave more screen time to shiwei during shiwei’s lines lol... but also i cant help but hear lin mo’s voice during that part LOL ugh speaking of which i miss that team dynamic namanana team a on qcyn HAHAHAH hwx being a brat and fjj running around wild and lin mo giving up on them all just laughing like idiots for hours on end while bo yuan just judges them from a corner LOL i love the beginning of the wenxuan and lin mo friendship good times :’)

a lin ran feature :’) i respect hes self-aware about his need to be more than cute to succeed. lin ran has always given me a vibe that hes very serious and tough on himself. he looks soft but has high demands and seems very determined to get what he wants.

im not worried about li hao bc hes surrounded by a bunch of kids who can teach him how to dance LOL not just lin ran but like jin fan and tianci too

AY I RESPECT OSCAR. hes a good kid and someone whos willing to speak his mind to address problems, thats awesome. they need someone to do that. he’s direct with the problems but also directly follows by complimenting them and saying how great they could be if they pulled through LOL hes still a kid so hes trying not to offend them but i respect his courage, warmth and dependability.

A FEATURE ON XIKAN’S FRIENDSHIP WITH LUO ZHENG omggggggggggggggg luo zheng the sweetest ge, leaving all the good things for xikan whatt ugh but luo zheng is like literally going actor route so sad that he still wants to be on stage but has no opportunities. im grateful theyre still so close that xikan starts crying just thinking about him

xikan being involved in the stage design and costuming and all makes me think of lin ran but also makes me think of cai xukun. cxk always gets so involved in every little detail to seek perfection

interesting that they focused it all on zry and lxk........ but at least highlighted xikan’s fun side

lol they purposefully cut in fan yu screaming zry’s name and ycw yelling cyc....

but also tbh xikan’s voice was not very strong during his high note and i know hes giving 110% into his dancing so im guessing he doesnt have much air left at that point but i was kinda disappointed it couldve been better. BUT he still did a good job. i thought the part where they ripped off his jacket couldve been more impactful? but it felt like it was just randomly in the middle of the rap break and he doesnt sing again until much later so it was like why did you change clothes there?

tbh this song isnt that exciting? so im surprised that they wanted it that badly?

i saw spoilers that renyu would win and someone did the math that it makes zero sense for their group’s score to be that low, but i didnt expect their score to be THAT low.... goodness wtf thats definitely rigged, i see why people were mad.

renyu winning is either entirely rigged bc youku wants him to debut or people are really just voting for him bc fan yu was there and that’s not fair either. i love renyu (and his friendship with fan yu) but there’s no way renyu actually won that many votes on a stage where he didnt really show his vocals that much and he messed up his dancing and he was surrounded by kids who danced much better and wouldve made him look not great. this makes zero sense. and the fact that ycw is the only winner that made sense is probably bc youku was like well we cant make it too obvious that its all a joke. but really, its all a joke.

yes i love that renyu worked hard and stayed up all night but can we talk about how xikan does that for every stage? and renyu’s just now started to do so. renyu just came into this competition less prepared, so his improvement is easier to see.

i still think if youku wants to debut renyu, theyll kick out lin ran from top 7, but can we talk about how lin ran put in all the effort to design and perfect his stage? how he teaches others to dance and pushes his group mates to shine as a leader and how he has truly one of the most memorable and formidable stage presences on this whole show? people say the debuting group will need renyu’s voice but how can you really say that renyu fits and is prepared and deserves to debut more than lin ran?

renyu is adorable and talented but let’s be real, as a vocalist, hes not like you zhangjing, hes not like zhao lei, hes not like zhao pinlin, hes not proven that he really fits to be a main vocal in a boy band. youku cannot force us into believing that he can fit that role without any evidence to prove his worth. its like theyre trying to jam someone into that role and its like renyu’s their closest bet, but even tho he still doesnt quite fit, theyre just gonna shove him in anyway. this is what happens when you only give attention to people who are dancers and dont give actual attention to people who are actually boy band main vocal material.... /COUGH ZHAN YU or even cui shaopeng??

how can you possibly believe that renyu got 173 but their average was 134? none of xikan’s groups numbers make sense:

how did shengen suddenly drop so much? youku has been touting him this whole time into the top 10. shouldnt more of xikan’s fans voted for xuyu? bc he literally begged during the last elim for xuyu to make it this far. xuyu wasnt even dead last in the elim ranking but here he gets last place by like 15 votes??? when everyone else’s vote difference is like half of that at max?

you expect me to believe lin ran only got 127 after he literally descended from the ceiling as an angel? that doesnt attract attention? how are both zuo ye and hu wenxuan so low? wenxuan was literally center and had bright pink hair, and in a song style that suited him, you cant tell me he didnt shine on this stage. xikan tied with xzx???? beneath a kou cong and su xunlun tie??? no way

theres one week left and youku’s getting desperate to make it look like whatever they’re going to make happen will be a natural result, that this competition is up in the air and no one is safe, but it just seems very questionable to me.

sooo does this mean there arent gonna be elims before the finals or what, we just dont see them announce who gets to perform? im assuming not all 32 kids will take part? and theres not gonna be a mentor collab stage? it wouldve been cool to see han yu and cheng xiao with the kids. there were 3 stages between the first and second elimination but no third elim and no mentor stage? its a mad rush to the end, honestly.

oh well, we still love these CHILDREN

ps: if youve been following my rants, i honestly feel like i have had a really positive impression of zheng renyu from the start and i really do like him. he makes really good songs and his voice is very nice and his friendships are pure and his attitude is commendable. 凄美地 and 當帷幕落下 and 後來的我們 are some of my favorite favorite songs to listen to from this entire show, like probably 3 of my top 5, and a good deal of that is because of renyu and his voice. but im just trying to be realistic and renyu is not in my ideal debuting boy band.

UGH just seeing the vocal kids’ reaction to them getting announced as the front runner? HEARTBREAKING. they’re all SO surprised. and up until the last second, renyu is like SO sure that it’s not them. and then when it gets announced, theyre all so stunned with their eyes wide and mouths agape, except huang enyu who just covers his face with his hands. this reaction is just... its so sad that they have such low expectations of their ability to do well. I mean i cant blame them, it’s a realistic reaction, seeing how things have progressed on this show for them so far and the rankings of where theyre at now. but its still so sad.

AW kou cong being so supportive of huang enyu and huang junrong! saying “you can definitely win”, we love a boy who supports talent :’) and chen junhao aggressively hugging a dumbstruck li chenxu - awww friendshipppp

ive tried my best to avoid spoilers for the elims so my main thought for this next perf is just “oh gosh i really hope this isn’t sbh and syh’s last stage, but even if it is, at least they shone well in it” .... except for sbh’s last high note :(

so what youku is trying to tell me is... if you’re good, you should keep trying, and giving up is a sign of lack of perseverance !! if you’re bad, you should recognize it and give up while you’re ahead and go do something else rather than waste your time. so was zuo qibo not good enough? are lm and syh good enough? and so cxh and xzx have shown they’re good enough? but for kids like qzq and yzy who are relatively good too, should they keep going despite your lack of giving them a similar amount of attention?

i feel like this whole segment has been dedicated to convincing me that liu cong, ma haowen and he yijun should give up. and im ??? how is this okay? wont this make them sad when they eventually watch this?

LOL yes please give cui shaopeng a feature, its exactly what we need from this group. i love how he described everyone, hes so real LOL. but also the fact that xue en is just gentle :’)

aw zixin..... really trying his best to stay cheerful must be hard. im happy to see zlj really cares about him. im grateful yixing recognized zixin’s skill in singing and dancing. but also im kinda just hoping that if this group does place top 4, which is highly possible, that zixin actually needs saving. bc otherwise itll be sad if no one in their group needs saving and they just waste that opportunity :\

i mean the rest of them were really good too! honestly a high quality perf, but still. YES JUNHAO EXACTLY! xue en literally can get your attention in 0.5 seconds, and he may not be the most popular, and youku may not give him nearly as much attention as he deserves as the WINNER of the last round (with 190 votes!!!!), but no matter how much time he has on screen, he takes that window of opportunity and KILLS IT. and im !!!!!! so grateful !! he did so well!!!

AW shaopeng’s smile when hyb says hes changed after cutting his hair is so adorable!

aw zuo ye...... man its amazing when you think about how much of an impact cx has had on several of these trainees when she herself is still so young, but that tells you how respected she is, which is awesome. but also i do agree zuo ye has really really improved a ton!!

you know, i was gonna say i was surprised they flat out told everyone that the vocal group was ahead, but actually im pretty grateful at least this means these kids who normally would NOT get any screen time (cough zhaohao cough li chenxu cough junrong) are regularly getting at least some screen time, which is great! but also it is sad to see that this screen time just consists of them being nervous and unconfident and stressed out thinking theyre about to get knocked down from the top at any moment. but at least... we’re reminded that they’re here, that they exist, and that they’re a force to be reckoned with.

can we also talk about wlk sitting next to enyu instead of with his group? their friendship is so strong :’)

ok this is the rest of my ep 2 reactions lol

im just grateful it looks like a lot of the comments are understanding of lin mo’s comment about giving up. when i heard lin ran say he’s 27 i was like wait what. ok by international age he’s 26 but still its jarring to hear. the way he acts just makes me forget how old he is and how much he must be really struggling inside to face his family with each passing year.

im grateful akey got his rap solo aired and sad that zhan yu didn’t get more attention despite his somewhat popularity. and im devastated that the judges didnt see jin fan and lin mo’s worth. im grateful that cheng xiao saved him. why are initial auditions always so emotional for mr tyger oh gosh. im scared for jin fan but trying to calm myself with the knowledge that he doesnt get eliminated somehow, i just have to keep watching to find out. overall, not the entrance i was hoping for them. they didnt get an intro video or any background footage either :( but at least i dont have to hold my breath because we’ve seen that they dont get eliminated...

ahhh im so happy kou cong and shen bohuai are getting appreciation!!!!! oh mannn that just makes me think of how kou cong’s tarzan team got so slighted (UGH YE ZIMING) (UGH YIXING KNOWS IT TOO, PICKING KOU CONG TO SAVE -- and cui shaopeng ;_; he knows these kids were slighted on qcyn....) and also bohuai’s smile team (JIN FANNNNN) aka the best buddy team dynamic awww and ooo yan an did chinese dance / oh rip it says hes already gone

i appreciate the concept of “do whatever you want, don’t leave behind regrets” bc i feel like that happens so often with these survival shows, but we’ll see how it actually plays out....

ayyy interesting, i feel like seeing hwx, zy, zlj, gz as a group made me realize that being popular may give them confidence and help them feel more comfortable to stand up and volunteer, but then seeing ycw, cyc and ylq also stand up to challenge them, i respect that bc it feels like these kids are saying theyre confident too. Its nice to see that the three of them have such a close bond that they can give each other strength like that. I feel a lot of kids are conflict-avoidant so even in something silly as this (or maybe even especially so, since this can be seen as unimportant so why bother fighting) being willing to stand up is significant and also does help them ultimately remain relevant to viewers in the long run (a smart move)

LOL ylq and cyc have actual reasons to support but ycw’s only argument is dissing cyc’s hair LOL
